The next season new 'new look' Denver

Hi fellows, I made this detailed scheme, with salaries to pay for new arrivals I think we should sign in (R)FA and for those who GOT to resign with us; who should be traded (IMO), etc. The pick for the draft is based on an article that came out about a week ago, saying that Kyle Singler will be a Nugget next season. I think it's a good pick. He's already 23, very mature and competitive and has been a starter for four years at Duke. He has everything it takes to be a very good option in the rotation and succesfull in NBA. SO, this is how I think The Nuggets should look like to next season:

       2010/2011       -----        2011/2012
US$ 65,870,000     ---    US$ 63,700,000 (+ rookie salary)

Players to come :

(R)FA:
                                                                       PPG      RPG      APG

Marc Gasol              Grizzlies     C            12.6        7.8         2.2   ($10,200,000 plus +/- 10% each contract year)

Carl Landry              Hornets     PF          12.1        5.1         0.7   ($5,500,000)

Jamal Crawford      Hawks       PG         14.2        1.7         3.2   ($9,000,000)

Draft:

Kyle Singler              Duke         SF/PF     16.9       6.8         1.6    (it was said Denver will pick him)

Trade:

Wesley Matthews    Blazers     SG          15.9        3.1         2.0   ($6,800,000)

Leaving:

Kenyon Martin      free agent - leaves

J.R. Smith         free agent - leaves

Melvin Ely         free agent - leaves

Gary Forbes        free agent - leaves

Raymond Felton     trade

Al Harrington           trade       }  Wesley Matthews + draft pick.

Chris Andersen      trade

Staying:

Nene                         free agent - resign  ($12,500,000)

Wilson Chandler    free agent - resign  ($4,600,000)

Arron Afflalo             free agent - resign  ($4,500,000)

+

Timofey Mozgov    ($2,560,000)

Kosta Koufos      ($2,200,000)

Danilo Gallinari  ($4,190,000)

Ty Lawson         ($1,650,000)

Roster:

Centers:

Marc Gasol

Timofey Mozgov

Kosta Koufos

Forwards:

Nene

Danilo Gallinari

Carl Landry

Wilson Chandler

Kyle Singler

Guards:

Ty Lawson

Arron Afflalo

Jamal Crawford

Wesley Matthews

Line-up: Ty Lawson, Arron Afflalo, Danilo Gallinari, Nene, Marc Gasol.

This is something realistic, that can be achieved, and looks pretty good to me.

Whoa

I agree with Rys, I don’t really see how that lineup is better than the one we have right now.

Also, we’ll be paying over $80 million a year for them, which will be a double disaster.

We'll never get to pay $80 million for those players,

if we really overpay them it’s unlikely to pass the $70 million mark.

And I think this roster is better then last year’s, for sure, replacing the bench warmers JR, Felton and Birdman with Crawford (who can score off the bench as well as Swish), Matthews (excelent shooter) and Gasol – Moz and Koufos backing him up -, and KMart with Landry (actualy, with Nene starting at PF and Landry off the bench), and yet Singler who can be more usefull than Ely and Forbes toghether.

by danherb on May 6, 2011 5:22 PM MDT up reply actions

Dude

Never underestimate the ease in which NBA teams overpay average players in a weak free-agent pool.

You also don’t think anything about defense, it seems. That team may be able to put out a few more points on offense, but they’ll give up the same amount on defense, and you never know if Crawford will blend in (he’s the type of player whose inconsistent play will rightly warrant an extended benching from George Karl)

way too much

money for crawford,

Nugs wont go over cap siginifigantly anymore, The K’s pretty much said that.

you really think

we’ll draft a dukie when Karl is still our coach????

by JBnuggs on May 6, 2011 4:11 PM MDT reply actions

still doubt it will happen

but I agree with whoever said we should draft a young guy with sky high potential for the future, as opposed to drafting someone who can help us now… no one we could get at pick 22 is gonna be better than what we have now, we should be looking at developing someone for 2-3 years down the road

by JBnuggs on May 6, 2011 4:51 PM MDT up reply actions

We suck at developing players

It’s better to draft a Ty Lawson type player (or an Arron Afflalo-type, although we didn’t draft him) than to try a pick on somebody like Rodney White.

what about spurs style?

Draft an overseas player and let him develop over there for a couple years

by JBnuggs on May 6, 2011 7:47 PM MDT up reply actions

That only works...

because they have/had a core of Duncan-Ginobili-Parker to build around. Before they drafted Ginobili and Parker, they had David Robinson (one of the best centers in NBA history)

what do you have against suckin for a few seasons.

at this point it’s obvious that there has to be some moves to be made, and cIeanin house wouIdnt be a bad thing, because this thing that’s goin on now isnt workin.

by Rys on May 7, 2011 9:13 AM MDT up reply actions

The problem with the plan listed above

Is that it will keep us where we are except with HUGE salaries locked up to two players who are, at best, the 3rd or 4th options on a contending team.

Another problem is that if we sign Marc Gasol to a max (disaster waiting to happen) and Jamal Crawford to $9 mil a season (another disaster waiting to happen), we won’t have enough money to sign Lawson, Gallinari, and other young players who are much better than Gasol and Crawford.

Also, Carl Landry will command more than $5.5 million a season, and signing Jamal “30-year old JR Smith” Crawford to $9 million a season is just dumb.

Bird Rights

we could resign no problem. This team right here is a 52+ win team. Gasol+Nene with Moz and Landry off of bench is really good Frontline. + Galo @ 3 is amazing.

This also makes it so Karl cannot play the stooopid 2 PG lineup because Jamal is an amazing 2 guard who can handle like a 1.

I think this is a brilliant idea to be honest.

in fact i did this in NBA 2k11 in association and i LOVE IT.
Crawford is naStAy

haha

bird rights no prob?

is that your check book i see those paychecks being written from. No way the Kroekes go that far over the cap, especially without a marketable superstar.
The days of being a top 4 payroll team are over.

by nsink on May 9, 2011 7:15 AM MDT up reply actions

yeah why pay that much money for 1st round and out seasons.

the probIem is not the owner, it’s the roster not goin anywhere, and a Iarge part of that is because of the Iow expectations coachin and not utiIizing the teams taIent effectiveIy at aII.

if the team had a decent coach, we probabIy couId have made it farther than the 1st round on a few occasions, and the front office can then reaIIy see what they have with the pIayers on the rosters and make moves then, but because karI wont pIay any one, we have to get pIayers with no upside, and pretty much go into the season with Iow 1st round out expectations.

NBA 2k11 and many other NBA-related video games don't account enough for defense

I’ve played them before, and while some of you may think I’m too obsessed with defense, it’s pretty obvious that our team could definitely be better on the defensive end (which is what many of us have been saying ever since 2005, but w/e).

Crawford may be able to score a lot of points on offense, but he isn’t all that efficient and his shooting has become more and more inconsistent, especially in the past several months. Crawford also sucks at defense.

Not Gonna Happen

Memphis will match any offer to Gasol. No way they let him walk for nothing. I actually getting Crawford at a reasonable price. Nuggets need a couple of dead-eye shooters (Crawford and/or Dunleavy would be great).

by ACEIII on May 7, 2011 6:40 AM MDT reply actions

The problem is that Crawford isn't that great of a shooter

He’s a good scorer for sure, but I’m not really sure about his shooting.

Gallinari is a pretty damn good shooter IMO. Afflalo shoots nearly 45% from behind the arc. Lawson has a decent developing 25-foot shot, but he needs to shoot it more instead of deferring to brick-kings like Al Harrington.

To tell the truth...

Moz is still a year or two away from being a legit NBA starting center, and Koufos will be a career backup. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t experiment with giving those two more minutes.

We need a backup point guard. Kirk Hinrich, anybody?

Now you're just pulling straws

Forbes is a great energy guy, but if we were to put him at PG his assist:turnover ratio would be barely above one. For purposes of comparison, Lawson’s ast:TO ratio is around 2.4, and league average for point guards is around 2.

ive heard this a lot that Moz and Koufos suck

But based on what? Mozgov kinda looks good to me, and Moz hasn’t even seen enough time to tell. Koufos is BIG and athletic, so who’s to say he can’t put it together?? I never understand the hate these two guys get. At least wait until they’ve sucked for a season to start hatin’ on them.

Also No One is pulling Marc Gasol away from Griz. and Jamal Crawford would have been a nice pickup three years ago not now.

by ice357 on May 8, 2011 11:52 AM MDT reply actions

No, that wouldn't

That team looks like the Bizarro Warriors.

Granted, we’d have a good deal of cap room, but you just can’t have the best three players on your team be Gallo, Lawson, and Afflalo, as great as they are. You’d need a (2008-09 season) David Lee or Kevin Love type player to fill out the team, and we won’t be able to get either of them.

With that being said, a Lawson-Afflalo-Gallo-Love-Mozgod lineup would be pretty darn sick.

he doesnt handle

the ball well enough to be a full time SG. dont know if he has the ball skills to run a fast break, or to take his man off the dribble (from a sg perspecetive, from a SF perspective he is fast enough to do just that) consistently enough to be a starting full time SG. he is more of a SF, on the defensive end he is an amsazing SG tho.

by nsink on May 9, 2011 1:58 PM MDT up reply actions

my thoughts exactly

his lack of handling skills is what makes him more of a SF…. but he can defend both positions pretty well

by JBnuggs on May 9, 2011 4:59 PM MDT up reply actions

dreaming

I don’t think anybody’s going to want Harrington or Bird in any kind of trade, unless they can get packaged up with somebody else. Shame they couldn’t have been shipped out with Melo.

I worry that no FA’s are going to want to play for the Nuggets.

The Nuggets need to get drastically better at finding gems late in the draft, and developing talent. That’s the best shot for this franchise to turn into a contender. If they try tanking for a good draft pick, we’ll have to worry about that high draft pick turning out like Melo.

I would rather try to get OJ Mayo and/or Rudy Gay from the Grizzles. Also It sound like Philly is going to put Iggy on the trading block!

so.....

should we let AAA walk and go after Iggy? or start Iggy and bring AAA off the bench?
I’m just not sold on him being a SF full time but he wouldn’t be redundant playing next to AAA so I guess I really don’t know……..

wow I sound like a politician or something

Affllalo and Iggy would work pretty well together

Iggy’s main weakness is his long-range jump shot, and IMO Afflalo has one of the nicest 3-point shots in the league.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
