Zach's Stiff List 6/1/11

Just Noticed it had been awhile, so I though I would offer my opinion on those not making the cut around the sporting world ...

Star-divide

1.   Lakers Management:  Jerry Buss, Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak go out and hire an arguably decent head coach, but forget to tell their star player they have no plans to hire the guy he wanted.  While personnel decisions should never be made to appease one player you might want to try and put your new coach in a better position to succeed in what was already a daunting situation.

2.  Russell Westbrook-  Westbrook decides to be the one this year who is a star caliber player and at the same time doesn't even have enough class to shake the hands of the team that soundly whipped his butt.  Maybe next he'll take his talents to South Beach.

3.  Jim Tressel-  Note to any professional out there, if covering for guys so they can get inked up will cost you your multi-million dollar dream job...don't do it.

4. JR Smith-  While this time he was only driving a scooter without a license, once again JR Smith finds himself getting into trouble in the offseason.  Bad luck or bad habits?

5.  Bruce Levenson & the rest of the Atlanta Thrashers ownersNot bothering to try and foster a hockey culture at all,  former ownership saw their attendance records fall to the worst in the league and has been secretly trying to sell the Thrashers for a while now.  Some may argue a Canadian city regaining a hockey team is a good thing, but for the five hockey fans in Atlanta, this is a sad and dark day.

Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

Nice list, might have Tressel at number one though, guy writes two books on “integrity” and goes ahead and does this? His reputation is ruined, not to mention his job prospects for a while.

Nice list Zach, check the sidebar where I imported your list.

I agree with GHill33 that Tressel should be hire for sure. What kind of program was he running up there – he really must have had his head buried in the sand not to see all the corruption going on.

I’m pretty interested to see how Mike Brown does with the Lakers. There were quite a few folks who wanted him in Denver. Brown is trying to lure former Nuggets assistant and current Mavs assistant Tim Grgurich to L.A. and I’ll be watching to see if Brown comes after his former assistant who now works for the Nuggets in Melvin Hunt (who I really like).

Thank Nate

Tressel should be #1, I just didn’t really look at it as a ranking of 1-5 rather just five individuals who each were stiffing it up in one fashion or another.

The NBA will make my list if (it’s looking more like when, sadly) Miami wins the title. LeDecision by LeChump will have done more to LeRuin the game than anything in history, imo. And we’ll be looking at a very long LeOffseason.

The NBA is seeing popularity it hasn't seen in decades

This is the first time since the Jordan era, that ratings are this high. I just don’t see how that equates to Lebron ruining the game. He was free to choose whatever team he wanted to go to, and he decided to take less money to get better teammates around him to increase his chances of winning. I’m sorry, but how is that more criminal than Mark Cuban spending tens of millions more each season than every other team, or Melo demanding a trade and sabotaging an entire season for us? It’s the system that everyone should be upset with, not Lebron. If you didn’t like what he did then you should be upset with the concept of free agency. Like that old saying goes, don’t hate the player, hate the game. Put yourself in his shoes and think about it, right now you could be (A) on the brink of a championship alongside your best friends, or (B) already on vacation in scenic Akrn, Ohio. Hmmmm, what a tough call.

Yes, because everyone announces their decision to abandon their hometown franchise on an hour-long special on the 4-letter network. Right?

I think James's attitude and behavior have begun to change

I noticed it after the all-star break. He toned down his act quite a lot; he became more and more conciliatory; he started answering media questions more forthrightly. I still can’t stand the guy, yet I believe he has begun to see how his actions and persona have hurt him.

One could say he’s only worried about the impact on his “brand,” and one might be right. Still…

Surely no thinking sports fan is pissed at James for simply leaving in free agency

Nope, people loathe the guy 1) for repeatedly making a loud-and-firm commitment to bring a championship to Cleveland and then reneging, and 2) for the manner in which he announced his decision to leave. There are lots of details in support of both numbers 1 and 2, but they’ve been aired again and again, so why belabor the points?

I grant that you are correct that ratings are very high, probably in large part due to James and his game’s extremely high level, along with the Ghidrah-plus-supporting-cast monster that Miami has become. People love them a marauding juggernaut, eh?

No. More. Stickyball.

by LongWindedHank on Jun 1, 2011 2:20 PM MDT up reply actions

He did apologize

So at some moment you have to move on and accept that he was a young guy, caught up in the hype and the moment and made a dumb move, I’m sure he wasn’t the first and I’m sure many of those who came before him are posters on this site, I know I am one of them.

I don’t hate Lebron or even really care about him much more then for who he is as a basketball player. It’s not like the Heat are something new, we just haven’t seen this type of talent playing together before. Watching Game 1 when Lebron threw down the alley oop from Wade at the end of the game I just looked over to my friend and said “Michael and Scottie are back” personally, in the long run, I think its good for the NBA as a whole so I can’t be too upset about it

I actually do hate lebail like a motherfucker.

He regularly goes to a restaurant that my good friend’s wife works at, treats everyone like shit, talks down and basically expects that any woman that works there is not only obligated, but is nearly dying to sleep with him. He has said horrifically inappropriate things to my friend’s wife in particular. I can’t say I wouldn’t try to punch him in the face if I ever met him.

Most states consider

a scooter to be a motorized bicycle (Under 50cc). Colorado is one of those states, and doesn’t require a license to drive one around.

Haaaaaaaa

You’re right, its just…I love the Rockies, I love them more unconditionally than the Nuggets believe it or not. I think its because for the longest time the Rockies were terrible, or mediocre…in fact they pretty much always been terrible or mediocre but I loved them all the same because I remember what it was like with no baseball team (though, growing up in Colorado Springs I did catch a lot of Sky Sox games, who actually predate the Rockies) and thus I will always take a lousy or mediocre team over nothing at all.
I don’t know why I put more pressure on the Nuggets to perform, possibly because basketball is my favorite sport and the Nuggets are my team so I care more about winning a championship and thus hold them to a higher regard.

However, I have said this year, this year, there is no excuse to not win the NL West, I therefore am merely saving a spot on my personal stiff list for the Rockies, most notably Jim Tracy, if they fail to win their first division title.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
