Offseason Idea..A bit more radical then most

This is a very large offseason for Denver, if they want to make a splash, perhaps it's better to cannonball then to just edge off the divingboard.

Call me crazy but here's my idea.

Star-divide

First off, long time reader, but first time poster. I've been a Nuggets fan since 93, I hold on to memories of seeing Isiah Rider playing in preseason games (was one of my favorite players) and Nick the quick beating the Lakers.  I've watched them through thick and thin, and I realize this might be the best off-season opportunity since 04.

I've been racking my brain with all the Dwight Howard trades, and have difficulty overcoming one thing.  If they trade with the Lakers, they'll have almost 90 million to a team that I think is a low playoff seed in the East.  If they trade with the Nets, they'll still have a borderline playoff team that is in the luxury tax.  To me the logical thing would be to collect some picks, talent, and keep your team atleast under the luxury tax.

This would assume the following

Nene resigns for the 10-11 range

Affalo resigns for 6-7 range

Chandler resigns for 7-8 range

JR Smith resigns for the 5-6 range

So without further addeu here is my idea for a trade, lambest away.

Denver Trades
Wilson Chandler (sign and trade)
Raymond Felton
Timofey Mozgov
Kosta Koufos
Trade Exception (Carmelo Anthony trade, 17.1 million)
Denver 1st 2012

Golden State 2nd Round pick 2012
NYK 1st 2014 (protection is 2 years after the claim from Houston getting their pick)
Rights to swap first round picks with NYK in 2016

Denver Receives
Dwight Howard
Chris Duhon
Hidayet Turkoglu
Trade Exception (Shane Battier Trade, 7 million)

Houston Trades
Jordan Hill
Courtney Lee
Trade Exception (Shane Battier Trade, 7 million)

Houston Receives
Raymond Felton

Orlando Trades
Dwight Howard
Chris Duhon
Hidayet Turkoglu
Daniel Orton

Orlando Receives
Wilson Chandler
Jordan Hill
Courney Lee
Timofey Mozgov
Kosta Koufos
Trade Exception (Carmelo Anthony trade, 17.1 million)
Denver 1st 2011 or 2012
Golden State 2nd Round pick 2012

NYK 1st 2014
Rights to swap first round picks with NYK in 2016

This would field Denver with the following team:

Ty Lawson/Chris Duhon

Aaron Affalo/JR Smith

Danilo Gallinari/Hidayet Turkoglu

Nene/Al Harrington

Dwight Howard/Chris Anderson/Daniel Orton

House is included as with Arenas and Nelson on Orlando another PG would be pointless.  Houston nearly ran Lowry to death and has an abundance of wing players.  This Denver team would be near 72 million a year (below what we were paying with Melo, and just right around the luxury tax).  Of course the new CBA could change everything.  Dwight Howard is exactly what we need (as well as everyone else) a strong rebounding center and great help defender.  Wish we could keep Kmart, but Al Harrington ate his money and roster spot...I'll let you guys decide if that's a literal statement or figurative. So thoughts other Denver fans.

Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

Felton is traded for the trade exception (treated as a individual deal).

Dwight Howard is traded for the trade exception for Carmelo. Completed the trade in trade machine but to do so I had to suplement Chandler with Gallanari and Bird to match salaries. Chandler technically could be done straight out with Orlando for the trade exception from Gorat. It gets complex but all the pieces work.

Good first post

Fun to consider, but I doubt that Howard would agree to come to Denver.

Appreciate it. It’s more of selling him that it’s a championship contender then selling him on the location. I think most the analysts are treating the last examples as the norm.

All things being equal player goes to the big city. Melo was the exception as he wanted the big city and didn’t care about all other things being equal. The reason the big three went to Miami is because they were the only team that could cordinate the three max free agents (though I do believe collusion from the players was the bigger thing there).

Most other NBA stars through the years have gone winning, money, and then location. Everyone will offer him max money, so it’s winning vs location. I think DH wants winning more (or else he would just stay in Orlando).

also

can’t re-sign wilson chandler and trade him in the first year of his new contract (as with all other restricted free agents)

I don't think Howard is as worried about a big city as much as winning...

That said, I think Gilbert will have to be moved to get Dwight.

I agree that the Nuggets are the only team that can offer Orlando a lot of rebuilding pieces, take on salary cap, AND put together a championship team immediately with Dwight. A lot of it would depend on Stan’s willingness to break the bank.

Agreed on all counts. Though I don’t think anyone bites on take the Arenas money unless Cuban decides to do it.

LA has notoriously been a bit more frugal with their money. You don’t hardball Lamar Odom if you’re not worried about the cost. You don’t downgrade Trevor Ariza to Ron Artest if you’re not worried about the cost. They could’ve had Hinrich on multiple occasions (the PG they truly needed). But were unwilling to swing taking the near 10 million he was owed. Look at the cap situation in 2 years if they swing the trade. Arenas, Kobe, Artest, Gasol, Howard….That’s almost 97 million a year dedicated to 5 players (which is by the way larger then any amount they’ve ever paid). If you sub in Gasol into the trade with Bynum you’re at 77 million for Arenas, Kobe, Artest, PF, and Howard. So I don’t buy the Arenas to go with Howard to LA.

Outside of that who can take on that contract and provide anything back? Then factor in the new team will require an extension. It might be that Howard hits free agency.

would love to see dwight in denver

unless ty and gallo break out as all stars next year, I doubt he’d want to come

Dwight will play for Siberia

before he plays for Denver and to Dwight, they would be one and the same.

Honestly, DH has made it clear that he is intent on playing in sunshiny, warm weather climes, and big markets. That really only leaves as possibilities Dallas, Fla. teams and California teams.

That’s fine. I’m OK with what Denver brings into next season. In fact, next season is one of the most highly anticipated seasons for me, how about you?

by sgiustra on May 13, 2011 10:01 AM MDT reply actions

You could be right. I’m unsure if he goes Odom and says he will only go to the beach or not. But if you look at those teams.

LA Lakers – See my previous post. It’s more of being unable to acquire him then not wanting him. LA can’t sign him except for the MLE under the current CBA rules (which could be expanded and salaries just cut0. Any type of cap will prohibit them from signing him. Trade route, I think might be harder then people think.

LA Clippers – Depends on what they do with Jordan this offseason. If they sign him and Gordon coming up, I don’t ever see this as a luxury tax team.

(Location) Kings – Until ownerships changes doubt they spend their cap space.

Golden State – Could be intresting there. But still have a hard time seeing this one.

NY Knicks – Could be an option if and only if you can gain on the current salary cap. Otherwise you’ve dedicated 40 of 59 million to 2 players. Cap holds would limit you to signing Howard under the max at the same cap.

Brooklyn Nets – Makes sense. But they’re locked into 43 million without signing Brooke Lopez to an extension and they would have to turn down his qualifying offer to have over 10 million a year available. As well assuming cap stays similiar to it’s current state. Could happen, but one heck of a gamble.

Miami – Cap hell and no tradeable assets. I could be wrong someone thinks Chris Bosh is a max player. No firsts or other pieces. So does Orlando take Bosh for Howard? If I’m Orlando I say heck no.

Boston Celtics – Another possible destination. You drop KG and Allen. Left with Rondo and Pierce. Rondo and Howard winning it all would be hard to see, unless someone else breaks out for them.

Dallas – Will actually not have th contracts to match out after this season for trade (except including Dirk). If they sign no one else they can be a player. But my guess is they resign Tyson Chandler and they’re at just above MLE money in 2012.

Orlando – Could just stay there and attempt to get the team over the hump. But cap hell for atleast 3 more years and no tradeable assets make this likely to leave.

If we go into this season with the core from last year, I’m excited to see it and see how far we can go. But honestly without another move we’re still a rebounder short (Kevin Love would be my next choice of someone to go after). As well unless we resign JR, I’m afraid we’ll be a complete system offense that can be undone in the playoffs. We have to many tradeable assets and pieces to sit on our hands and wait for next year. It would take hitting on a late first rounder or Gallo or Lawson turning a huge corner for us to be a championship team. Not sure about you but I’m tired of 2nd round of the playoffs being our goal.

You have Artest at 7 million a year until 2013-2014. Walton at 5.6 million and 6.1 million in 2012. Orlando would actually be taking on more salary in that salary dump in the early years…The savings would be 5 million in 2013-2014. I can’t see them ever taking that package.

The issue with LA and Orlando deals is that is provides no savings to them. If you were an Owner would you want to pay luxury tax for this team.

Nelson/Arenas/Duhon/
JJ Redick/Richardson
Artest/Walton
Bass/Anderson
Bynum/Orton

That’s a 90 million dollar team. With luxury tax, the owner is paying 110 million a year. I would be very suprised if they deal with LA directly. Three way trades could happen. As for the trade market the only teams I could see in OKC throwing a descent deal.

by remyrems on May 14, 2011 7:46 AM MDT up reply actions

You’d have to find a third team with large exceptions or cap space.

Denver is really the only team with a 7+ million trade exception.

Nets
Pacers
Clippers
Kings
Timberwolves
Thunder (though westbrook becomes due the year after and Ibaka the year after)
Suns (as long as they decline the option on VC. Which is likely)

I just don’t see workable deals. Indiana may take a gamble on Gasol if they can get a straight salary dump. Clippers may go back over with resigning Andre Jordan. Thunder possibly as well, but my guess is they stay a bit frugal and resign their own players. Nets if they go out of the DH contest could have an option there to take a chance. Salaries for them are difficult to match.

i agree man

the list of possible destinations for dwight is not really that long. i definitely think we have a chance at him, although at the end of the day he’ll probably be in LA. its going to be another interesting trade drama for sure.

by skithebert on May 13, 2011 9:34 PM MDT up reply actions

Nope, I'm not tired of anything yet

My feeling is, let this basic squad do what it can. If we could grab a useful player, great.

In time, this squad will have to blown up regardless of how far we go. But we have no idea where this squad stands given a year or two, preseasons, experience and development.

Look, if we went 8 – 20 after Melo trade, I’d have to wonder but we played well and then got beat by a championship contender. Not great but not the worst sign either.

My prediction: At worst we’ll be what Denver had been during Melo years. Decent team that goes out early in playoffs. At best, Moz, Gallo, Ty develop, AAA stays consistent and healthy and Nene stays effective and steadies foul shooting.

I’ll go to war with those possibilities.

by sgiustra on May 15, 2011 6:44 PM MDT up reply actions

I would agree with this premise. As currently constructed, I don’t see any coach that would see us as contender.

We’re still weak against pentration. We got vastly improved on our pick and roll defense from the start of last season. We’ev got better rotations. Teams that tightened the pick and roll and denied he pentration made us look inept offensively. Then you get down to the rebounding and turnover game. We do well in turnovers, but our rebounding leaves much to be desired.

If Mozgov can be a beast on the boards, I’ll change my tune. We can give that as a gamble, but honestly outside of having home court through the entire playoffs as depth allows us to wallop the bad teams. We still don’t have a dominant team, . If you can’t swing this deal, I’d position myself ot have cap space next year. So you swap Felton and Harrington for an expiring (if Fisher retires I could see this happening to LA). Odom would be the primary piece there. Or go after Bynum as long as you can hold onto Nene.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
