Fitting End to JR's Time in Denver

Me Again,

Towards the end of the 3rd, JR hit a three. Played great, active defense throughout the end of the quarter.

In the 4th, he maintained his active defense, forcing a jump ball. He hit another 3. Stayed on the court a few more possessions.

During this time on the court, Felton missed two rushed and awful shots, and turned the ball over twice with inexplicably awful passes.

CUE THE SUBSTITUTION...for JR...at the 9:35 mark of the 4th...

blah blah blah. 4 guard lineup with a lead (lawson, felton, AAA, chandler)... nice lead... long Thunder players shooting over tiny Nuggets players... another awful shot from Felton... blah blah blah...Nuggets down by 3

CUE THE SUBSTITUTION...at 0:22... an ice cold JR is called upon to rescue the team...

Honestly, George Karl is such an asshole I feel awful for all of you that he was extended for the inspired play of a young, deep team after the trade. Enjoy the most detrimentally arrogant coach of all time.

I am SO excited to see JR flourish, that is if his agent doesn't blow it, and become the star or complimentary scorer that he has so long been. A bigger, stronger, more versatile Marcus Thornton.

Sorry for your loss - both this season's title hopes, and the loss of a disrespected, rare talent.

Later folks,

Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

Good points

Karl hates JR, until crunch time when he points down the bench and says…“now save my ass”.

I don’t really like JR but watching Karl screw with him is frustrating.

JR will be a Net and lite it up!

Frankly

That scares me. Deron Williams and JR Smith in the backcourt is amazing. I wonder what they’d do with Anthony Morrow, though. Maybe play him at the 3 and give Outlaw a bunch of DNP-CDs? He deserves it

In the 4 losses JR played

17 min in game 1, 6 min in game 2, 14 min in game 3, and 14 min in game 5. In the lone Nugget victory he played 23+ min. Coincidence? I dont think so. There is absolutely no excuse for not playing the guy at least 20+ min a game.
JR will go on to do great things somewhere else and I wouldnt blame him for leaving. Its a shame he wont be in Denver. Part of me would like to see him go to New York and flourish. Then we could see how far Melo JR and Chauncey could have gone without Karl.

by gonugs on Apr 29, 2011 8:00 AM MDT reply actions

He wouldn't flourish in NY

Too many good offensive players there that need the ball to be effective.

But I guarantee you that if you put him on the Wolves he’ll be able to post 20 a game, night in and night out

Totally disagree

Its Melo and Amare. Thats it. Jr just needs minutes and in Dantonis shoot fast system he would thrive. JR is a great talent. He just needs to be on the court. He could play for nearly anyone in this league. Just needs a coach to trust him. Karl aint it.

by gonugs on Apr 30, 2011 7:51 AM MDT up reply actions

D'Antoni would probably start Landry Fields at SG and have JR come off the bench

Fields is a decent playmaker, and he can hit catch-and-shoot threes and rebounds very well for his position/size. Billups isn’t a true point guard, and with Melo and Amar’’’e in the same lineup… you need three other guys around those two that are willing to give up the ball.

Depth

Amare is wearing down, Billips is old, Melo is going to see many more games like game 3 in the playoffs where he has to score 42 to even stay close. JR would definately help that team. JR is very capable of giving up the ball. What he lacks is playing time. Ill take JR Smith over Landry Fields any day of the week.

Toney Douglas is hogging the bench combo guard minutes

And he’s a D’Antoni type of player, so Douglas is still going to get his fair share of minutes.

Oh my god

Are you seruosly trying to continue this debate? First you say Jr couldnt play there because of Fields. Now its Douglas. Your arguing just to argue. Its like your grasping at straws. Which is what D’Antoni has to do because no one but the big three on that team can play. LACK…seriously…give it up. JR Smith would help the Knicks. Just admit it. The Knicks painfully demonstrated that they are a glorified D league team ever since they traded everyone away for Melo. JR Smith is a legitimate NBA scorer and underrated defender and could play for anyone. Especially the Knicks. Poor Melo. Amare is wearing down, and Chauncey is getting old. He needs help. I dont know what you are trying to say. Stop. Your embarrasing yourself.

In spite of his adoring fans' strongest desires

Until he starts channeling James NaiSMITH and stop channeling JR Ryder, he will always be more circus freak than a relevant NBA player

He’s not the first waste of pure talent, and he’s not the talented waste of pure talent; but that’s what he is and that’s why legit NBA contenders won’t bother with him. But he can always take solace in his Sportscenter moments… during the regular season in games that do not matter

He seems like a waste

Because Karl screws with him. You will see how he develops with a better coach. If JR doesn’t get his minutes yanked around he will look like a star and all you haters will see we will be in a bit of trouble unless we can find a really talented shooter to replace JR.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

Also did game 4 not matter?

We wouldn’t have won that game without him or Gallo.
The same players who Karl didn’t play in most of the 4th quarter of game 5. Again thank you Karl you are such a great coach, I don’t know where Denver Nuggets would be without you!!!

He is a joke of a playoff coach.

i like JR's raw athletic ability but

I don’t like how he seems to go for the flashy play instead of the simple one sometimes. But he was much better in that regard this past year. He needs to go to the fucking Bobcats where he’ll know he’s the most talented player on the team & can play without fear of lossing his minutes.

PG

Anyone remember how good JR played when he had to play point? he can be very unselfish if allowed… runs the pick an roll with Nene better than any of point gaurds… ok felton doesn’t run Pick and roll… he runs pick and i’ll shoot or… turn it over. JR will be missed… hope him and Nene go to the same team and i can adobt that team

This is depressing.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
