Golden Nuggets: What we've learned since the Carmelo trade...

Prior to acquiring three-fifths of the Knicks' starting lineup in exchange for Carmelo Anthony, I questioned just how good these new Nuggets would actually be and wondered openly if the Nuggets could hold onto the fifth position in the playoffs. With 36 combined games played by the Nuggets and Knicks since the trade, consider many of those questions answered.

Star-divide

In hindsight, it's easy to deride my immediate post-trade skepticism regarding the new-look Nuggets chances of contending in the 2011 playoffs. With our Nuggets now standing proudly at 12-4 since Melo's departure - and with the Knicks embarrassingly winning just 8 out of 20 games with Melo - it's tempting to say that this trade was a slam dunk in Denver's favor all along.

Remember how things looked back on February 21st when the trade actually went down. Not only did the Nuggets have to incorporate five new "role" players while losing one superstar and one all-star caliber player in the trade, but they would have to do it against Boston, Atlanta and San Antonio at home and on the road at Portland, Phoenix, Utah, New Orleans, Atlanta, Orlando and Miami...all the places the Nuggets historically lose in.

Additionally, the Knicks weren't exactly Eastern Conference barnstormers with the now-Nuggets Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari, Raymond Felton and Timofey Mozgov playing nightly in Madison Square Garden. Before the big trade went down, the Knicks had lost 11 of 16 games and were barely limping along in the cellar of the Eastern Conference playoff picture. I, and many others, couldn't understand how the core cast of a mediocre Eastern Conference team could translate into instant success in the much, much more competitive Western Conference.

But with the post-Melo Nuggets now 12-4 and the with-Melo Knicks imploding to the tune of 8-12, we've learned the following...

...we underestimated how negatively the Melodrama affected the Knicks.
Before the trade was consummated, the Melodrama didn't just threaten to ruin the Nuggets entire 2010-11 season, but it threatened to ruin the Knicks season, too. Even though the Knicks lost 11 of 16 games prior to the trade's completion, they were actually pretty good before that at 22-15 (on pace to win 49 games). Why the sudden spate of losing from their 38th game onward? That was right around when the East-Coast-media-disseminated trade rumors were trickling out and most assuredly had a negative affect on the Knicks' morale. Remember, Felton had been successful as a starter, Gallo was Knicks' coach Mike D'Antoni's disciple (D'Antoni played pro ball in Italy alongside Gallo's father) and Chandler was rumored to be reticent about coming to Denver. The thought of being dealt from Madison Square Garden to the Pepsi Center couldn't have set well with these guys back in January and such thoughts likely led to Felton's drop off in production, Gallo's hesitant play and Chandler's erratic shooting before the deal went through.

...the with-Melo Knicks have become the Nuggets of 2004 through 2011.
In the post-Melo world, the Nuggets are 7-3 against plus-.500 teams with all three losses coming on the road. The new-look Nuggets are also 5-1 against sub-.500 teams with that lone loss coming on the road. Conversely, the Knicks are a woefully awful 2-8 against sub-.500 teams while somehow being 6-4 against plus-.500 teams. Meaning, the Knicks are doing today what the Melo-led Nuggets did for years in Denver: get up for the good teams while allowing bad teams to hang around. Remember all those blown fourth-quarter leads the Nuggets had this season with Melo on-board? Now, in Melo's absence the Nuggets have beaten sub-.500 teams by an average of 25 points per game in their five victories against the NBA's bottom feeders. Great players win the games they're supposed to win.

...George Karl can coach circles around Mike D'Antoni.
It must be nice to have two "superstars" and one former perennial All-Star on your roster while getting to play the Bucks three times, the Cavaliers twice, the Pacers twice, and the Pistons and Bobcats once apiece. And yet D'Antoni has nothing to show for being the beneficiary of such easy scheduling...in addition to having nothing to show for the first half of the season when he had the players now wearing Nuggets uniforms playing predominantly against Eastern Conference teams. Karl, meanwhile, has been able to win with players D'Antoni couldn't and was able to win with Melo even when #15 was disgruntled, distracted and distant with his coaches and teammates. In fact, Karl should arguably win the NBA's Coach of the Year Award for overcoming adversity in every possible way and putting together one of the Nuggets' finer seasons in franchise history.

...the Knicks offer was immeasurably better than the Nets offer.
Jeff Morton tackled this one in Monday's Golden Nuggets, but it can't be stated enough. To many (including the Nuggets front office reportedly), the Nets trade seemed more appealing because it put the Nuggets in a position to rebuild with Derrick Favors and a truckload of future first round picks. But to Karl and others, maintaining the Nuggets competitiveness was more important. We only need to look at the Utah Jazz who parted with Deron Williams for Favors, Devin Harris and two of those picks to see just how bad that Nets trade would have been for Denver. Not only have the Jazz disappeared from playoff contention, but they lost at home to the Wizards on Monday night.

...I have a well-intentioned but probably overly negative opinion of the Eastern Conference.
I fundamentally believe that the Eastern Conference is a @#$% joke and that the Rockets, Suns, Jazz, Warriors and Clippers (yes, and the Warriors and Clippers) would all be playoff teams if they played in that junior varsity conference. You know, the one that will have not one but two sub-.500 teams in the playoffs, including one that will probably be 10 games under the .500 mark. The point? The point is that I didn't see how the new Nugget players could be that good if they were barely able to compete in a vastly inferior conference. But again, I underestimated how much the Melodrama destroyed the ex-Knicks' collective psyche prior to the deal getting done.

...Carmelo Anthony is a high-maintenance superstar.
This won't be news to anyone who follows the Nuggets closely, but Denver fans and its sports media largely put up with and defended Melo's antics because we were just happy to have a team on the NBA map again when Melo arrived in 2003. And make no mistake about it, Melo deserves major props for the making the Nuggets relevant again for the first time in ten years. But he's a chore to coach and can be a pain in the ass to play with, and all of Melo's flaws have been on full display under the spotlight that is the New York media. Every antic, every word, every action, every innuendo is dissected and over-dissected. And Melo, you can't say we didn't warn you about all this

...what a difference a little confidence and a little coaching makes.
The new Nuggets are damn good players. And one of them - Mozgov - can't even get a lick of playing time and yet he might have the biggest upside of the foursome acquired from New York. Chandler, Gallo, Felton and Mozgov could have been just as special in New York as they've been in Denver had they been coached properly and been given a vote of confidence from their organization. Instead, they were forced into the pressure cooker that is New York City all they while being ensnared in the Melodrama without either the coaching or the confidence needed to navigate through it all.

Even though it's been thrilling to watch the new-look Nuggets rack up blowout wins while engaging in the guilty pleasure of watching the Knicks implode with Melo wearing a blue and orange #7 jersey, I maintain that the Knicks will be fine down the road. Recent comparisons of Melo to Stephon Marbury by members of the New York media is simply unfair and premature, just as its premature of us to declare an overwhelming one-sided victory in this deal.

That said, Nuggets general manager Masai Ujiri memorably proclaimed that the Nuggets "got killed" in the Melo deal, and for now it sure is tempting to think it's the other way around.

Andrew . . don't forgot the impact of K-Mart

I don’t think its coincidence that last season’s downfall happend when K-mart went out and this season fine play happens when he is achieving full stregnth. We all know K-Mart faults (particularly his contract), but when healthy, I always thought he was our second best player and probably our most valuable. The back-ups to ’Melo and Billups were servicable rather than the irreplacable loss of K-Mart defensive impact.

Not sure how much the ’Melo drama affected the Knicks, but clearly the rest of the non-traded Nuggets are a lot better than the non-traded Knicks . .K-Mart, AAA, Smith, Nene, Lawson are miles ahead of what Chandler, Gallo, Felton were playing with in NY.

Another thing we've learned

And I think this one is HUGE…all the old “rules” about who the nuggets can and cannot beat are OUT THE WINDOW.

As of now, that means that nobody can count on Denver getting trampled just because they’re Denver. Playing in Phoenix is a prime example. Mailing the 2nd game of b2b’s is another. The old nuggets could be counted on to lose in those situations, and I think the new team just doesn’t have any kind of hang-ups at all. Very exciting!

I think that in the future, we may see some negative sides of this—one thing I loved about the old nuggets was that they REALLY got up for big games at home against good teams. They were amazing against the Lakers, or against any team that threatened them in the playoff race. I don’t know if this continues, because the old rules seem to be irrelevant. We’ll see.

Bottom line, this is a whole new team. One that is not only very good NOW, but has plenty of potential to be better in the future.

Iverson actually did provide a good deal of assists

But many of them were Kobe-style assists, in which he would only pass when he realized that he was triple teamed in the corner and that all the rest of his teammates were wide open.

ESPN’s pre-season coverage had me thinking it was the Phillies or Yankees.

A fluke, an anomaly to be quickly dismissed & forgotten so we can all get back to focusing on the Lakers, Heat and Knicks.

As I recall they were the consensus pick to win the West. But yes, a Rockies World Series win would be similarly downplayed.

Good read

Personally, I think D’Antoni has been set up to fail. The Knicks simply aren’t very good and they NY media will be tough on MElo but the fans won’t all turn on him for another year or so. D’Antoni will be the first to go. It was a lose, lose trade for him. He isn’t a bad coach if he has the right players to work with. Remember, his Suns teams destroyed the Nuggets. The one common denominator in the _______ coach sucks campaign is MElo. MElo is a good player but he expects everyone to play around his game, including the coach. If the coach is not willing to do so it simply doesn’t work well…although his talent is enough to get some wins.

by Pusherman on Mar 29, 2011 9:55 AM MDT reply actions

D'Antoni not bad

As Andrew pointed out, the Knicks were on pace for 49 wins. Andrew stated Karl is a better coach (maybe so), but how many times was Karl bounced in the first round with MElo? I told my kid after the new Knicks first loss that D’Antoni would be the first head chopped for the Knicks front office mistake. As stated else where, this is the Herschel Walker trade all over again. Walker didn’t fit the Vikings scheme, nor does MElo fit D’Antoni’s.

All the hoopla around the knicks will be exaulted if we(the knicks) get past the 1st rd THIS year?

I don't understand why an entire team should have to adjust to one player

rather than one player adjusting to an entire team. Sure, Melo is a “special talent,” but apparently adaptability does not play a part in that.
Melo’s problem is that in his mind he is a god and everyone else (including other NBA players) are mere mortals. His comments that “the other team shouldn’t even be on the court with us” after their loss, at home, to the Bucks is exactly what I’m talking about. He doesn’t respect his opponents and doesn’t respect the game.
The Knicks won last night. The highlight that ran on all the sports shows? Melo tossing JRich to the ground and then being tripped himself (thereby negating what probably would have been the game winning 3 when the refs called JRich for the foul).
Stay classy Melo.

The thing to remember about guys like Reilly, Cowherd, Kiszla, etc

Is that that while their title might designate them “anyalyst,” “sportswriter,” “columnist,” whatever, their real job is “professional asshole” – a paid version of the dinner party guest who rips the food, the wine & fellow guests, but still hangs around long after every one else has gone home. Unlike the amateur who simply stumbles into it, it is truly a life’s work for the professional, with most honing their dickish craft from a very early age in the hopes of one day joining the asshole elite.

What happens is the media markets want the people who make the outrageous statements and stir up controversy because it generates ratings. Why else do you think Skip Bayless and Stephen A. At Posting and Toasting

They are using Mad-Libs for their game write-us:

Last (time of day), the Knicks blew another one. Though they played reasonably competent basketball for most of the game, a terrible (ordinal number from one to four, probably one or four. Maybe both.) quarter doomed their chances of beating (group of less talented individuals). New York’s guards struggled to contain (human being) off the dribble, while the bigs were helpless against the pick-and-roll. This led to the usual switching, mis-switching, and open shots inside and out. New York made a comeback, in part because of better ball movement and defense by the bench unit, and the deficit to as little as (single-digit number) before team play completely evaporated in the closing minutes. The Knicks stopped moving the ball, resorted to contested jumpers, and couldn’t get stops on the other end. Seth tearfully shoveled (snacks) into his face, then took a scalding hot shower once the game ended.

Yet when he does and everyone else watches..why is that a bad on Melo?

You want the ball in your best player's hands with the clock winding down

But that doesn’t necessarily mean you want him taking the shot every time. You want the ball in his hands because you trust him to make the best PLAY – sometimes that’s draining a game-winner, sometimes that’s finding the open man for an easy bucket.

When Melo gets the ball at the end of games, heroball tends to be the only thing on his mind, and opposing teams know it – hence the four defenders draped all over him during the final posession of regulation last night.

Nope

Dwight Howard secretly wants to play in Denver for a less-than-max contract.

Free Throws

No one should lose to the Magic because of Howard right now. You rotate your bigs and use your fouls. If he’s getting anything resembling a decent shot, you foul him. Most he will make is 1 out of 2. Nuggets did this some, but not enough, in the last game. I think it’ll burn them in the playoffs. Unlike Shaq, Howard isn’t so enormous that he takes the contact and still makes the basket.

It's All about the Assists

The Knicks got lucky last night and eeked out a win against a good team with only 16 assists in an overtime game. Chauncey led the knicks with 6 assists, Melo has 2. With 16 assists your offense is not dynamic. Your lucky to win.

Lawson and Felton have been getting 6 assists in a quarter regularly The new Nuggets have been getting 25-32 assists a game. Anytime you get 25+ a gane your likely to win. Our offense is moving the ball so well because we have two fast passing point guards. That’s why we should keep both Lawson and Felton. Assists equals Wins.

Face the facts. The Nuggets were a better team than the Knicks all along. Then we traded our so called superstar for all of your starters(except Amare). Now the Knicks play extremely selfish ball and play no defense. Yea I see a dynasty all right. A dynasty of 1st round meltdowns.

I still think y'all are way too hard on melo

i indulged a little schadenfreud at ny’s woes after the trade, but it became apparent that any team that trades four of its starters for one guy is bound to lose. i’m a sap, so i feel for knicks fans who think melo was a bust. i trust that in a few years, when they’ve assembled some better role players, they’ll be decent by eastern conference standards. not great, but not as godawful as this.

I agree with this...

I think a lot of us have forgotten what Melo did for the organization, how he made basketball in Denver relevant again, how many games and good times we had with him.

The guy is a winner at heart, he wants to win, he plays with a certain competitiveness. I’ll never forget him dropping the 3 against Dallas from the corner. While we’re better without him and it’s fun to temporarily have some laughs at his expense I wish him all the best – just not when they play us.

I think people just need to let this go

by asking for a trade he gave the Nuggets an opportunity to get what they got. Now we have a better team.

You don’t have to like Melo anymore…and you don’t even have to respect him. Just understand that we have a better team now and let what happens happens. It’s business. Melo got what he wanted and the Nuggets got something out of it.

You could just as easily say, the majority of Nuggets fans are understandably upset with Melo for forcing his way out of town, and the small minority of Melo defenders just need to give up on trying to change those feelings via argument.

i really hope

that all this adversity forces melo to work on his defense in the off-season. and it looks like the rest of the team is more than willing to help him lose his selfish habits.

one of the big unspoken differences between his play in ny and his play in denver was that karl came in after him, and seemed to coach like he was afraid to step on any toes. at least, karl was willing to step on the toes of people who joined the team after he became coach. but melo’s coming into someone else’s system and stat, d’antoni and the rest don’t seem to have any qualms about letting him know what he needs to do to help the team.

you might almost say it was a waiting game with karl, trying to outlast melo’s tenure here so that he could coach the nuggets the way he wanted. good coach or not, i always got the feeling karl never thought he was allowed to unleash himself on the nuggets.

Be careful what you ask for

In a perverse way, Melo’s ego … and also Chauncey’s ego kept GK’s own ego in check. Now that they are gone let’s see if Karl really did learn valuable lessons from the shameful way he treated Ray Allen.

He’s doing great so far.

Yes Melo gave his all but

Wins are what make a team relevant. Things got good here when GK and Andre Miller got us going. Melo was a big part of that. The reason why people hate on Melo is because in a 5 year contract, he demanded to leave in his 3rd year because his ego was too big for Denver. Only New York was big enough for his need for fame.

by Nuggburg on Mar 29, 2011 12:31 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

I always thought 'Melo was more Kobe than Marbury . .

and carried more about winning than anything else . .that he believed that to win he should have the ball in his hands . But the post trade results are making me wonder if I was wrong and it is about Meeelo.

But . . in fairness, he gave a lot to Nuggets and helped out by pushing the Knicks to offer a lot for him. We are miles and miles better off than when we drafted him 8 years ago, with talent, salary cap space and future.

by Frontrange on Mar 29, 2011 12:33 PM MDT reply actions

Melo cares about winning against good teams

Remember his comments after Knicks-Bobcats? He said something along the lines of “we shouldn’t even be on the same court as those teams” when refering to the sub-.500 teams. I think the Knicks are 1-8 against sub-.500 teams, which is just ridiculous.

I mean, I’m happy about how things have turned out at the moment, but I never thought the idea of the Nets trade was that it was going to produce immediate results. Now we can compare how the Nugs and Jazz are doing a few years down the road. That’s when to pass judgement.

my point was the Nets trade was not taking into account the talent we already had

and, as we can see, our remaining talent was abundant and able to blossom without Melo on the team.

You all know what I think of gambling on the draft. I’d rather take proven talent any day of the week. Plus Favors…ehhhhh

I don’t like gambling on the draft either. Lawson was a rarity. There are a lot more Johhny Flins than Ty Lawsons coming out of the draft every year. Free agency is the way to go to build championships for sure.

If we get immediate results, that counteracts their later success to some degree.

that's why i don't get why people are riding melo so hard

the knicks’ supporting cast is awful. when they traded for melo and a mediocre chauncey, they traded four players, which means two of their second stringers got moved up to the first string, while two of their third stringers got moved up to the second string. their second squad must be awful. if anything, melo’s probably one of the few bright spots on their team, and it shouldn’t surprise anyone that a team with that kind of personnel can only hang with other teams for three quarters.

also

Melo was making noise last season about wanting to be an MVP candidate, like he thinks he’s as good as LeBron or something. Look at the difference with the Cavs pre and post LeBron.

I think Melo has an exaggerated idea of how much of a difference he can make to a team all by himself.

More and more I’m coming to the conclusion that the bulk of Melo’s scoring consists of points that, one way or another, you’re going to get anyway.

Actually for me it is a case to give him grief

I had always looked at the Nugs roster and thought we were more talented than LA and SA so why couldn’t we get further? If Melo had been more like Kobe or Lebron and understand when it’s about him and when his teammates need to get involved then we could have won some titles. Lebron, as much as I hate him, would have won several ships here had we gotten the 1 in that draft. Now look at how well our supporting cast is playing post trade. While we only actually are one deeper now it feels like we are 4 or 5 deeper than before because of how well the supporting cast has played, To me it shows for as a great as an individual player Melo is he doesn’t make his teammates better and may even hinder their success.

A lot of why this team is good is because we can throw out 2 starting lineups at altitude. Another big reason is the pieces all play defense together. The third reason is we acquired some depth at our bigs, which allows us to rebound better.

It's because the stats aren't clouded by things like "they have no superstars"

That being said, I think Miami is really, really good both because their stats say so and they’re playing a completely different kind of basketball now. In the east, it’s a 3 way race between Chi, Mia, and Orl. Yes, I’m counting out the Celts. Last year the stats told us San Antonio was way better than Dallas – I think Dallas was a 2 and San Antonio was a 7.

Also, Hollinger is generally more accurate than the other power rankings out there.

One of the problems of his rankings is an over-emphasis on recent record

Although, with the case of the Nuggets, recent (post-trade) record is really the only thing that matters. However, this hurts the rankings of teams like the Spurs

yup, the stats don't defer to conventional wisdom

but the thing is, when you look at the last several decades there is really good reason for the conventional wisdom about superstars. As you’ve alluded to before, it’s the problem of induction, in that we just haven’t seen a team put together like the nuggets. That’s why I say zeitgest-overturning…IF the nugs pan out that is.

by Rainbow skyline on Mar 29, 2011 2:25 PM MDT up reply actions

This.

You said it, there has never been a team put together like this Nuggets team. In fact, it completely turns the table on how you build a team. GMs have never tried to build a team like this. But if you’re looking at how to do things in a way that creates a sustainable advantage, you can clearly see that if you acquire 10 guys at medium salaries with starting level talent, while your starters might be slightly losing to good teams, your backups are going to destroy their backups.

Our Nuggets have stumbled on a way to win that hasn’t been discovered before.

Basically LeBron decided that he should start setting picks in the PnR game

And their points per possession in that set has been just absolutely ridiculous since. Before they didn’t have a go-to play in the clutch, now they’re using that PnR all the time, and it’s devastating.

If you think about it, it makes sense. LeBron hasn’t ever had to set screens for teammates – it only took him 3/4 of the year to start…

You’ve got Ray Allen coming out saying something along the lines of, “We’re not ready for the playoffs yet.” Would he ever even think of saying that if Perkins was there? No way. Perk was their guy, he was friends with everyone and every one of those guys loved him. They were like a family going into battle every night and Perk was like the big brother who defended the fort next to big daddy KG. Also, I read Hollinger's article on the Bulls as favorites...

He says their advantage will decrease in the playoffs when teams like Miami shorten their lineups and their stars play more minutes, basically increasing the quality across the lineup.

It works because, traditionally, every other team does the same thing because NBA teams aren’t 10 deep. I’m curious what happens when a team is able to dictate the pace and force aging stars to play hard and get up and down the court. What happens when our starting lineup has tired out LeBron when he not only has to play 42 minutes, but he has to run up and down the court against our starters, and instead of getting a break when our backups come in, he has to run up and down the court with them too? Remember how he got cramps against Orlando?

I want to see Fisher guard Ty, then when Ty is out he has to guard Felton. I want to see Kobe, on his sore shoulder and hurt knees have to run up and down the court. I want to see LeBron with cramps like in the Orlando series because he’s forced to play with high intensity for 40+ minutes.

Great read as usual Andy

Always enjoy your perspective. Here’s a few of my responses though:

…we underestimated how negatively the Melodrama affected the Knicks

We also underestimated how negatively the Melodrama affected us. Even when we started the year out and all feared the worse, I don’t think anybody has us on pace to win 45 games. You could argue — and many did — that the Nuggets roster with Melo and Chauncey this year was the best we’d ever assembled. Without all the Drama, I think we could have won 55 games or more and broke the franchise record in the process. What else we underestimated was how talented Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari and Raymond Felton really were. I’m not trying to toot my own horn, but I knew those guys were talented players and that we wouldn’t be near as bad as people had pegged us to be following the trade… but some certainly didn’t.

…George Karl can coach circles around Mike D’Antoni.

You certainly love you some Boy George these days Andy. Oh, how the firegeorgekarl years are a distant memory. I admit, George is a good coach. He’s proven this to me several times in the face of doubt. But to say he could “coach circles around Mike D’Antoni” is a bit much in my estimation. What you don’t acknowledge is that George’s very strengths are the things he’s less hands-on about. His easy-going approach (some would say too easy at times) rubs off on his players, and allows them to operate at level of freedom that’s rare to see. Because George is who he is, and has the track record he does, I think this gets viewed often times as a sort of “genius,” when in fact, it’s more along the lines of apathy from experience.

D’Antoni’s offense, when executed correctly with the right players, makes George’s look like a pickup game at the YMCA. Sadly, D’Antoni’s incredible ignorance towards defense is a huge downfall, and I mean huge. If it weren’t for that — if for example he took George’s mentality on the subject — then we wouldn’t be having this discussion right now. Point being: D’Antoni’s had just as much success as George in recent memory, if not more, so let’s hold the “can coach circles around” argument for now.

Plus, at no time in your praise for Karl as Coach of the Year did you acknowledge that in both situations, the Nuggets always had the better roster (by far) even with Melo. So, that argument doesn’t hold that much water in my book either.

Otherwise…

— The Knicks trade was better for us now, but it’s still too hard to say until we’ve had a couple years. What if Chandler leaves in the off-season? What if Felton leaves in the off-season? What if Favors turns into a monster? What if Harris regains his All-Star form? What if the Jazz absolutely nail those first-round picks? Yes, the trade was better for us this year, but the jury is still out on the long run.

— Totally agree about Reilly. What is that dude’s deal? I know the media gets a terrible wrap for being negative, biased, obnoxious, and so on (most of it being warranted), but Reilly truly optimizes that in my eyes. Jimmer is a great kid who had one hell of a year, going against all odds, and couldn’t be more of a joy to watch play, yet Reilly’s gonna dawg on him. Man.

Nice rebuttal

But I think GK is definitely better than D’Antoni. And I like D’Antoni’s system. It is fun to watch. I love me some fast basketball with lots of passing.

D’Antoni isn’t bad. But Karl is better. Only Pop and Jackson are better coaches in my opinion.

I'd argue Karl is only better because of his defensive emphasis

Kind of weak, I know. I have to give credit where it’s due, and if you ignore defense than you’re just making a colossal mistake; but I think D’Antoni’s offense is brilliant. If he had a whole year to work with Chauncey and Amare, and could somehow get MElo to stop being so selfish (which I think is an impossible feat at this point in time), then I think you’d be seeing totally different results right now. Just look at D’Antoni and what he did in Phoenix with a good roster. He was the favorite year in, and year out but always fell short in the playoffs (remind you of someone?). Still, he made it to a few WFCs (I think), which is just as much as George can say in the past 15 years or so.

D'Antoni is a very good offensive innovator

Someday he’ll be an assistant coach again and he’ll bring the type of Thibodeau defensive innovation to a team’s offense and be looked at as an offensive genius.

I’ll have a blog post about this sometime in the next week or 2.

What makes me think GK is a better coach is the way Gallo is being used

to me it shows Karl understands and is capable of assessing player’s talents quite well. D’Antoni had him as a spot up shooter but the man is way too talented for that. I think D’Antoni is a good coach though, I already see the “fire D’Antoni” comments all over Knicks blogs and it reminds me all too well of the heat GK got this year pre-trade, coaches are just too easy of scapegoats and the Knicks management may overreact.

Excellent point re: Gallo

Far as I could tell during his time with the Knicks, guy just hung out by the 3 point line and chucked when he got the ball. He shows up here and all of a sudden he taking it to the rack like his hair’s on fire. I don’t know if that’s coaching or the light bulb going off in Gallo’s head or what, but it’s clear he’s a different player than he was in NY.

I remember that one game with the Nuggets at the Knicks in which Melo dropped 50 on Gallo

It wasn’t that Gallo struggled on D; Melo was just on fire (Al Harrington scored 42 points for the Knicks). It was the effort that Gallo was spending. He was all over Melo. Also, on the offensive end, he would drive right at Melo/Afflalo. Seriously. That guy had a “I’m going to penetrate the defense and nobody is going to stop me” look on his face. Of course, none of us remember because we were all fawning over Melo at that time.

Gallo this season was taking it to the rack much more then he was loafing around the 3pt line

and most definitely doing that in NY. ITs not a new Denver thing at all. I’d say he’s a higher usage player in Denver and he looks better since he’s so efficient.

But no way was he just this chucking 3pt gunner here in NY. At least this year.

I don’t think that’s the case with GK. If he’s hands-off, it’s because he thinks it works, not because he doesn’t care.

If you describe someone as "apathetic"

You are saying they don’t care. This isn’t a different dictionaries/interpretation thing, it is flat out what the word means.

"You cocky cock! You'll pay for your crimes against humanity!"

"He's like a man with a fork in a world of soup."

by CraftyB on Mar 29, 2011 3:24 PM MDT up reply actions

Read the comment above

But if you describe someone as apathetic it doesn’t strictly, STRICKTLY mean that. So many words have so many different definitions and meanings. In fact, nearly all words have two meanings. Apathy, in large part, has an emotional numbness attached to it. And it does carry indifference, but it’s not strictly held to that meaning. When you’re working with words you have get the overall sense of it, not just one single definition. We had this discussion in my class actually today about the word “looting” and when the proper usage should be applied. Like I said though, there are things Karl just doesn’t care about, in fact, there’s quite a lot in my opinion, but they bring him success just as I said originally.

"Emotional numbness" is a symptom of indifference/apathy, not a seperate meaning

And I’m not sure how a person can be emotionally numb and still care. They’re mutually exclusive conditions.

With the lockout coming

The 2011 draft will suck. Why get drafted when you can’t play? I would stay in college if I was a good player until they can get the CBA settled.
That’s why I think the Jazz got the royal screw because most of their good picks are in 2011, when the really good picks would be useful in 2012 (which is why I think that 2nd round GS pick will be clutch…2012 will be soo deep that a 2nd round pick in 2012 would be like a teen 1st round pick in 2011 draft.

The problem is that Faried is about 10% of the offensive player that Crash is

Which is why many people are projecting Faried as an undersized 4 when he gets to the NBA

Meh we'll see

He’s raw and could work on his shooting. All he needs to do is get a 3 point shot and then his beasting abilities in the paint paired with his good D sounds good to me.. again I’d prefer a PG… I don’t know who’s going by our pick.. Selby from KU?

It actually seems like the other way around

Given that some of the top players are choosing to stay in school. Alec Burks reminds me of Steve Smith, and I can see him easily averaging 16 pts, 5 reb, and 3-4 asts per game.

When they remember that they have a 25% at no.1 with their own pick and nearly 10% with the Clippers’ unprotected first round pick.

I can see them drafting Kyrie and Perry…

Also, Chris Bosh scored 10 points on 14 shot attempts with only 4 rebounds in 33 minutes. Hey Bosh, even Bargnani can do better than that…

I had a bad knee so I took a season off of rec league

2 seasons ago i tried to take a charge of the ref told me they dont call charges. In the second game of last season I was standing in the defensive end(on the free-throw line) while a teammate was shooting free-throws. The other team inbounded the ball and the guy drove straight at me and ran me over. The same ref from the previous season called a charge. The other team was pissed off. The ref explained that he had to called it because I had been standing there the whole time. Next possession same player did it again. Then it happened 3 more times by other players. The small crowd in the gym started cheering for me after the second time. After the game I found out that the team we were playing was a very disliked team. They would drive the lane nonstop because of rec league"rules". That’s how I got the train wreck nick name.

here it goes hold the laughs

I bought one of the 56" glass backboard hoops for the street in front of the house. Me and the neighbor measured out and SPRAY PAINTED the street for the lane, freethrow line and 3pt line. It is the best street half court. We did mark both 3 pt lines at 19 feet and 22 feet. When we play 3 on 3, I go to the right wing corner 3 and light it up. the neighbors know if i get there its going in 90% of the time. I practice taking shots from 3 places. Freethrow line, right elbow, and right corner. If i get by you to one of my spots your toast

Thing about OKC is that they are not good at handling the ball. They turn it over a lot. As potent as Westbrook and Durant are at scoring, they both cough up the ball.

Denver can handles these kids easy.

This is why I think David Stern only fixes the most important games. He probably doesn’t give a sh*t about regular season games that don’t involve the Lakers, the Heat, the Celtics, the Spurs, or the Bulls

Monta's usage rate is absolutely ridiculous

While it is pretty fun watching him plan, the Warriors aren’t going to be a playoff team until either

A. Keith Smart forces Monta to stop hogging the ball and to let Steph Curry run the offense
B. Monta’s usage rate (and efficiency) returns to 2007-08 levels
C. They trade him.

Those three were actually the options that the Warriors have

And A and B are pretty similar and both rather unlikely.

They shoulda had Monta inbounding and Steph shooting. Steph scored 35 points while making about half of his shots, which is pretty good for a guard

STIFF LIST (as of 2/21 by Jeff Morton)

1. OFFICIALS AT THE NUGGETS VS T-WOLVES GAME
In a short time frame the Nuggets went from up 9 points, to trailing by 3 points largely due to strange and downright erroneous calls from officials. Included in their greatest hits? Corey Brewer getting blocked out into the first row and somehow getting a foul called on him. Andre Millerbeing ejected for arguing a call where he was pummeled by Martell Webster and drew an offensive foul. Also, Luke Ridnour falling on his face and somehow drawing a foul. Nice going refs.

2. GEORGE KARL'S END OF GAME COACHING
In a very winnable game against the Thunder, your coach of the Nuggets decided to burn his two oldest players (Al Harringtonand Andre Miller) from the 8 minute mark of the third quarter, through the end of the game. Leaving them dead legged for overtime. Also, not subbing in defensive rebounders for Durant's last couple shots of regulation was a bit of a blunder. Gotta get better coach!

3. ROYCE YOUNG
Reading this article on CBSSports.com makes me wonder if good old Royce is secretly a Thunder fan ... oh wait. He also writes for Daily Thunder, the Oklahoma City Thunder's biggest blog. Go figure!! Listen Royce, dismissing that the Nuggets were down their two best players, and then using this game to prove a point about the Nuggets is a bit ... I dunno ... "salty". Don't you agree?

4. THE "INJURED ANKLE LEPRECHAUN"
What is the appropriate sacrifice we need to beseech this malevolent leprechaun who has cursed the Nuggets. Ty Lawson and Arron Afflalo both injured their ankles on Monday night. In addition to Danilo Gallinari being out with a severe ankle sprain and Timofey Mozgov just coming back from one himself. Listen, if you need me to get a goat I will.

5. FEBRUARY
Seriously? Can we be done with this month already? Time for March. Green beer and an incredibly easy Nuggets schedule. Can't get here soon enough.
