Golden Nuggets: Could Nene be a Nugget forever?...

Nene recently told HoopsWorld's Lang Greene that he wants to "be a Nugget now and forever." I second that.

Star-divide

Now nine seasons into his NBA career, Nuggets starting center Nene is having his finest as a pro. Once one of the Nuggets least reliable and least durable players has evolved into the team's rock over the past three seasons. Now he should be rewarded with a contract extension.

I know what many Nuggets are thinking: wait in line. Currently due for a contract extension are Nene (should he opt out of his current contract thanks to a player's option clause he's sure to exercise), Arron Afflalo (a restricted free agent), Wilson Chandler (also restricted), Kenyon Martin (unrestricted) and J.R. Smith (also unrestricted). And while I agree with my colleague Jeff Morton that re-signing K-Mart is extremely important, I don't agree that it's the most important of the Nuggets looming offseason signings. Re-signing Nene (again, should he opt out) has to be priority #1, with the re-signing of Afflalo and Chandler a close second apiece.

Like K-Mart, Nene comes with injury concerns...despite missing just a handful of games over the past few seasons. Prior to the 2008-09 campaign, during which Nene admirably stepped in at center for 77 games in the absence of Marcus Camby, Nene missed 192 games over the previous four seasons thanks to a combination of freak injuries, a frightening health scare and bad off-season conditioning. At the time, it seemed as though Nene would be just another Nugget befallen by the franchise's power forward curse that cost former greats like Calvin Natt, LaPhonso Ellis and Antonio McDyess would-be All-Star careers as Nuggets.

But thanks to a good Colorado woman (and I'm being serious here), a re-dedication to the game and the Nuggets medical/training staff, Nene got his act together in 2008 and hasn't looked back since. He may not be an All-Star as many fans believe, but he's damn close. More importantly, Nene - as described by head coach George Karl - is the Nuggets most "efficient" player. As we saw against Atlanta on Wednesday night, you can count on getting a little bit of everything from Nene in any given game: solid field goal shooting, good rebounding, a few assists, a few steals, a block and a number of defensive stops. Simply put, Nene is a possession-generator, something the up-tempo Nuggets need to kick off those fast breaks that bury their opposition.

Moreover, I'm still holding out the fantasy that Nene could return to power forward (as long as he doesn't succumb to the curse, of course) if Timofey Mozgov can contribute 25 solid minutes per game at center. I've long maintained that we as fans were robbed of the Camby/Nene/K-Mart/Carmelo Anthony front line that should have dominated the Western Conference between 2004 and 2008, but were never able to for an assortment of injury-plagued reasons.

Unlike the Nuggets' last high profile free-agent-to-be (you know who), Nene's - and his wife's - first choice is to stay in Denver. What a novel concept! And thus, the big Brazilian's recent on-court performance and desire to be in the Mile High City should be rewarded soon into the off-season.

100% agreed

We’re all loving the energy and soul K-Mart gives this team now, but Nene is actually more important for the Nuggets, especially going forward (as K-Mart probably has just a few seasons left anyway – at most). Afflalo is also a young, critical component to Denver’s success both now and going forward, which again, in my mind, makes him far more valuable than K-Mart. Same goes for Chandler. As long as K-Mart will take the much smaller contract offer he’s going to get, then awesome. Hope we keep him. JR? Well, we didn’t trade him for a reason. I think how he performs down the stretch, and into the playoffs, will figure very largely into whether the Nuggs put forth a greater effort to retain him.

I would not mind re-signing all 5 guys, if possible, and if they want to stay in Denver. I think our current success is showing that there are places in the game for all of these FA’s.

ESPN picks nba playoff cinderellas

two of them picked the nuggets

Henry Abbott, ESPN TrueHoop: The Nuggets.

Midseason trades are like a spin of the roulette wheel. The cool part is that I don’t even think the Nuggets made that deal to be great this season, and their salary structure would suggest they’ll be in flux for a while.

But the last few weeks suggest that the roulette ball is settling precisely where the Nuggets wanted it. There might be magic there.

Dave McMenamin, ESPN Los Angeles: Denver. The Nuggets are 9-2 since the Carmelo Anthony trade while the Knicks are just 6-6. George Karl has his guys primed for a No. 5 seed in the West and have become only more relevant in their conference while Melo and the Knicks are in sixth in the East and sinking. Even if Denver doesn’t get out of the first round of the playoffs, if they finish the regular season strong and give their playoff opponent a series, they’ll be eligible for trading their sneakers for glass slippers.

His smug, incredibly condescending assessment of the Nuggets yesterday on First Take made my blood boil

I seriously hope guys on our team were watching when he called us “cute”/“a nice story” and said we’d make a good college team. The longer the Nuggets feel disrespected/play angry, the better.

Afflalo and Chandler both are subject to qualifying offers... (Nene, obviously stays)

which could set up a sign and trade.

K-Mart may choose to go to Miami, or may want to stay. Nuggets could afford to keep him for the short term, which may be all he wants.

Who knows, maybe playing both PG’s continues to be Denver’s weapon.

J.R. … I vacillate from game to game. He could easily stay, or not.

I've thought about Kmart and Miami

and I’m not sure it makes sense for either party. Miami needs pg’s and C’s. In Miami, Kmart would be playing limited minutes behind bosh.

Which in my opinion should be top of the line priorities this off-season. Al just has no place on this team anymore with Chandler and Gallo and Felton obviously needs to start for whatever reason so both should be jettisoned.

Except by Felton's own statements

since the trade, that he is okay coming off the bench, this season, as long as they are winning. It’s going to take a very deep playoff run and a sales job by the FO to keep him happy as a backup after this season.

Right now, we’re in the honeymoon phase and a lot of these players are playing for their next contract. Next year, maybe not so much. Especially for Felton who won’t want to be coming of the bench in his contract year.

Felton has not once said he is angry about not starting

he said it was different and he had to adjust but has stated far more that he is happy than the opposite. Plus he is getting more minutes than Ty and playing when it matters more(the 4th, he’s a better leader right now). Starting is something fans obsess about.

Did you see the interview?

It was clear he wasn’t happy about not starting, and would tolerate it only until the end of this season, and only so long as they are winning. Nuggets go on a three game losing streak, and you’ll see Felton start complaining.

Formerly KS and CS

by ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown on Mar 18, 2011 1:40 PM MDT up reply actions

It's just logic man

Felton has been a starter his entire career, and is having the best season he’s ever had as a pro. He’s also entering his prime and there’s just no way he’s gonna continue to be happy playing second fiddle to Ty. He’s happy now, but the offseason will do some weird things to you. It makes you think. All that empty time allows you to reflect and coming into training camp next year he’s just not gonna be happy coming off the bench again. His comments haven’t been DEAD indicators of his feelings, but saying stuff like “as long as we’re winning” pretty much cancels out anything you could take as positive about his position.

He has seemed content with his role, you guys are conveniently leaving out his comments that seem positive.

If the Melodrama tought us anything it's that you can't give the benifit of the doubt to the players

Remember when people were all up in arms about those who criticized Melo for not being on the bench when he was injured? How bout those same people who freaked when Andy compared Lala to Yoko even when it came out she admitted she had influence? Bottom line is, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out Felton probably isn’t happy coming off the bench.

I don't think Melo liked the pick & roll

It’s a lot of guaranteed contact (both on the pick & the finish if you get it back on the roll), and it’s 50/50 whether you ultimately end up with the ball – Melo preferred to do his thing on wing iso plays for the most part.

by CraftyB on Mar 18, 2011 11:09 AM MDT up reply actions

Melo constantly slipped the pick when initiating the pick and roll.

One, probably because he didn’t want the constant contact from setting a solids pick (not recognizing that a solid pick with a good aggressive role actually gets you a lot of open lay-ins).

Two, because he loved the jump shot (which he’s very good at hitting).

That’s yet another example of how much/little control a coach can have over his team: Karl says “let’s run the pick and roll with Chauncy and Melo” . . . Melo slips the pick and calls for the ball 20 feet away from the basket . . . that also prevents player movement when they don’t know what to expect/know the play called isn’t going to be run.

Still kinda worried about the St. Party’s day hangover.
I hope the Magic players got wasted too. It is St. Party’s day, so they probably went out too.
I couldn’t imagine Dwight staying indoors and not wearing a green hat with his huge ass smile.

Watching Sportscenter yesterday A.M.

They had an interview with Wade and James. Normal questions, then one of the press corps askes them if they feel like they have to win all of their remaining games. It was hillarious. James nearly fell out of his chair. He couldn’t believe they were really asking him about winning all of their games. He was laughing, and put his head down, and covered his face. You could tell he was completely taken aback by the question. Hillarious.

I will admit I had soured on Nene at the start of the season

But without Melo sucking the ball away, Nene has shown he truly can be an elite player in the NBA, hopefully his injury issues are behind him, but I would be happy if he was a Nugget for life at this point.

I hope Nene stays a Nuggets for life as well. Glad to see Gallo back and that worst fnas thing was crazy! I never knew fans could be so brutal. They make us look like saints. Crazzzzzy.

I agree

The craziest I have seen Was when we beat CU in football the streets were crazy and I saw some crazy fights but other than that It has been mild. Way diferent than those crazy ass fans. Granted CSU hasn’t had much to celebrate about sooo I can’t really say.

worst fans

I’m from VA, so it was no surprise the Philly fans were the worst. There is an old man who wears an indian chief outfit to every redskins game. The fans in philly got him in the parking lot and beat him up. They broke his arm. Harmless old man.

I was surprised not to see CU on the list. Anytime your school has to implement a “riot fee” to pay for all the damages, you have to be considered on this list.

Gallinari vs Melo

Winshares for the season:

Gallo – .144 per 48minutes (44% better than league average)

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/gallida01.html

Melo- .123 per 48minutes (23% better than league average)

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/a/anthoca01.html

Winshares isn’t perfect, especially when switching teams, but I cannot believe (still) that New York let this guy go.

OT: Interesting article about the NFL lockout

The NFL owners have the same problem the NBA owners do…here’s a good quote from Matt Light (New England Patriots)

"Their problem economically is more about revenue sharing on their end," Light said. "Some smaller market teams are spending a far larger share of their income on salaries and expenses than larger market teams. They should be working that out among themselves, but they know it’s easier to try and take it away from the players than to take it from each other."

NFL Lockout Article Here

Sounds like the problem in the NBA too eh?

I don't get the Grant Hill rant

Rose and the others were talking about how the felt at that time, which was many years ago before their friendship and what not. I’m sure many felt the same about Duke at that time and they were 19 year olds.

by GoldenNugget on Mar 18, 2011 2:06 PM MDT up reply actions

I think part of the issue

is that Rose, the executive producer of the documentary, did not make that explicitly clear in said film. While he did clarify later through twitter and appearances on the four letter network, not everyone who watched the documentary necessarily heard that. Also, from what I understand, “uncle Tom” is just about the worst thing one black man can call another. I thought Hill’s response was well thought out and well written, and not at all snarky.

by Russscot on Mar 18, 2011 2:09 PM MDT up reply actions

Really? I though it was very clear he was talking about how that team felt during that season

Hill’s response was fine but is seemed unnecessary. A good documentary will release the full truth, I’m happy Rose did not hold back, it was quite informative of the feelings and prejudices at that time. I’m disappointed Webber couldn’t swallow his pride and appear though.

I agree that the documentary was well done

and I also was pleased with Rose’s candor. I am by no means coming down on Rose, but I would have to watch it again before I could definitively say whether or not he made it clear that he was speaking about his feelings at the time. I do know that a lot of the fallout revolving around his statements had him clarifying his position, inre: he was speaking to his feelings as an 18yr. old kid, and not his current beliefs. If he had made it crystal in the documentary, then he wouldn’t have had to repeatedly clarify his statements, imo.

by Russscot on Mar 18, 2011 2:22 PM MDT up reply actions

It should be a nonissue

Like that absurd story about Bill Spooner suing a guy from a twitter post even though the NBA said they didn’t see a problem with it and won’t penalize Spooner.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
