Golden Nuggets: Nene didn't get "snubbed"...

Nene is having his best season ever. But he's still not an All-Star.

Nene is having a great year, but not "an All-Star type year" like Nuggets head coach George Karl has said.

Star-divide

When seeing the names missing from the 2011 NBA All-Star Game roster - notably Kevin Love, Steve Nash, Monta Ellis, LaMarcus Aldridge and Tony Parker - it's hard in good conscience to argue that Nuggets center Nene and his 15.3 ppg and 7.3 rpg belongs on the squad. And frankly, the little "Nene belongs in the All-Star Game" chatter that surfaced came exclusively out of the Denver sports media. Nobody who covers the NBA nationally ever thought Nene belonged on the team.

I'm not in any way trying to diss the great season Nene is having because he is, indeed, having a great season. But he's having a great season by his own standards and maybe the Nuggets standards, not the NBA's standards. And the days of Chris Gatling, Tyronne Hill and Jamaal Magloire making All-Star teams are long gone. Despite having too many teams, the NBA's talent pool is so deep that the league's leading rebounder and third leading scorer can't even make the All-Star team.

I believe that Love deserved a spot on the squad over the well respected but aging Tim Duncan and that Duncan would have made the perfect Commissioner's pick for the spot to be vacated by the injured Yao Ming. But hopefully NBA Commissioner David Stern will right the wrongs of his coaches (who voted for the reserves) and get Love on the team where the NBA's best rebounder since Dennis Rodman certainly belongs.

Here's a rundown of today's notable links...

George Karl becomes calming leader as Carmelo saga continues - Ian Thomsen - SI.com
Carmelo Anthony is still in Denver and the 29-20 Nuggets remain a dangerous playoff team, which demonstrates the change in coach George Karl. In younger decades he might have reacted angrily to the season-long 'Melo-drama (as Karl refers to it) of whether or not his star will be dealt.

Hornets' David West an All-Star, Nuggets' Carmelo Anthony not - ESPN
Carmelo Anthony gets passed over for a 2009 All-Star spot in favor of New Orleans Hornets forward David West. Melo had missed many games due to injury that season which was what primarily cost him the All-Star appearance. Melo would get his revenge on West later on when the Nuggets bested the Hornets in the playoffs.

Great more moments when we let leads slip away

Without a timeout.
Pop seemed to outduel Jackson in the coaching dept. I also like how Pop is trying to diffuse pressure off of SA and onto LAL.
The man is a genius and I hope one day he comes to coach the Nuggets b/c of his AFA roots. I think he could make this team a contender even without the size. I mean look at what he has done with Blair and Duncan as his starting bigs.

I think it is good that Nene isn't in it

If his contract situation was more stable then I would be mad, but being an all-star when you don’t put up all-star numbers makes GMs overpay you.

Is there a link to George's comments about Nene?

Because I think I saw a video with George making comments to that effect, it seemed that George was being sarcastic.

i dont know why you posted that george karl said nene is not having an all star year.

i listened to the post game interview and this is what george said.

"Nene, he’s had a very good year – an All-Star type year," Karl said. "It will be interesting to see if he has a chance of making the team or has a chance of being nominated by the league. He’s had solid games to very good games all year long."

I guess my wording should have been more clear. I wrote that "Nene is having a great year, but not “an All-Star type year” like Nuggets head coach George Karl has said." – meaning Karl SAID Nene is having an All-Star type year but I just don’t agree with our coach’s assertion.

here is an example of the importance of comma placement:

“Nene is having a great year, but not “an All-Star type year” like Nuggets head coach George Karl has said." means GK thinks Nene is an all-star.

“Nene is having a great year but not “an All-Star type year”, like Nuggets head coach George Karl has said." means GK thinks Nene is not an all-star.

Comma placement?

A comma should always go before the word “but” due to the fact that “but” starts an entirely new thought, the same way that “and” as well as other conjunctions do.

If/when the Nuggets trade Carmelo Anthony and begin a rebuild, they will do so with a keen eye on spending their dollars in a much more economical fashion than they have in the past. Bank on that.

The decision on whether or not to extend Nene will be one of the biggest they make.

Well...you can't run hockey and basketball the same way

merely for the fact that in Hockey they have the luxury of developing talent in their minor league system. I’d feel more at ease if the NBA had a similar structure. Even in a new CBA era for the NBA it will still depend on an extreme amount of luck in the draft. I really wish Stern would get rid of that draft lottery

Also, the Avs have the lowest payroll of any major professional sports team by about $10million I believe.

Sure, that's what they all say

Until of course we’re perennial lottery contenders and cant’ get a soul to sign with us in Denver, thus, the Kenyon Martin scenario is replayed and we end up overpaying a fairly mediocre player.

This is why taking the Knicks deal is crucial. If we don’t, we’re going to be stuck overpaying crappy players anyways. Why not just take on three young guys who are still on their rookie deals? Doesn’t that fit the mold anyways of “going cheaper” or whatever?

With all the extra shots that Melo took that are gone being distributed, will Nene step up in a massive way (consistent 20-10 guy) or will he stagnate?

I think it has less to do with Nene's production

because he’s a known commodity, and can command hefty FA dollars (regardless of CBA). I think it’s more about how the Nuggets will be spending money in the future than Nene’s performance on the court.

That’s what the All-Star game is about: numbers. I don’t, and never have understood the argument that numbers are overate, or that there’s more to the equation. Numbers are tangible, and like the ball, they don’t lie. Numbers speak for themselves. Kevin Love can’t really do much more than he already is; it’s not his fault his team sucks. Basketball is a team sport and unless your name is Lebron James you need a fairly good team around you in order to compete.

Nene's good but not great!

I like Nene as much as the next Nuggets Fan, but to say he is an All-star is a stretch. I don’t have a problem with him getting the nod over Nash or Aldridge, but Love is having a superior year to almost everyone in the league, let alone Nene.

It is a stretch but you could argue he’s the best Center in the west but I mean K-love obviously deserves the spot to replace Yao, I think Monta Ellis does more and s having a better year with the Warriors. Certainly those two deserve to be in more than Nene. How about some love for Zach Randolph? Memphis is not only making a good push, they are a half game out of the playoffs and Z-bo is averaging 20 and 13!

But it's the *5* that's under discussion, right?

If a center is chosen to replace Yao, there is no one to even consider besides Nene. Yeah, that’s not how it’s done, which makes the process even more laughable.

And leaving Kevin Love off the team? See laughable. The all-star game is pure silliness.

Sure, the coaches’ choices are their recognition of stellar play during the current season (thought the fans’ choices are little more than a popularity contest). That’s all well and good. But since they didn’t choose Love, the West’s team is inexplicably flawed in the recognition department. Truly bizarre.

As you say though, thats just not how it is done. I don’t like the Tim Duncan selection at al either, here’s a guy whose in the middle of his worst personal season ever and he gets to go. That's my beef

If you are replacing the “center” for the west, it’s gotta be Nene. I know that’s not how it works but that doesn’t mean I have to agree with it…… And K-Love being left of is a TRAVESTY!!!!!!

by JBnuggs on Feb 4, 2011 1:52 PM MST up reply actions

Agreed

I can’t believe Zach Randolph has gotten such little consideration. He’s almost putting up the same numbers Love is, and his team is much better.

Someone needs to make sure Melo reads this

in big huge gigantic titanic letters:

According to an NBA source, the reason Dolan has not acted on Walsh’s contract is he still has the former disgraced president Thomas on his radar, still speaks to him regularly and still is considering bringing him back in the future….The NBA source told The Post what’s preventing Dolan from committing to Walsh is not health, but Thomas’ unyielding desire to return. The NBA source said Dolan talks to Thomas more than once a week regarding Knicks issues and does not care about the fan outrage that will occur if he eventually brings him back in some capacity.

could it be Dolan and Lebron's Mom?

Dolan was thinking he could win over Lebron’s heart by winning over his Mom’s….but it backfired.

by Bigdorph on Feb 4, 2011 4:06 PM MST up reply actions

Thomas is apparently Vinny Cerrato

In Washington, Dan Snyder hired Marty Schottenheimer to be head coach, and Cerrato got fired in the process. Snyder kept consulting with Cerrato during the year, with Cerrato whispering in his ear. Schottenheimer finishes on a 8-3 run, but still gets fired. Cerrato is re-hired. Sounds like what Thomas is doing in NY.

Be afraid, Melo. Be very afraid.

If Thomas is re-hired

the Knicks will have to be removed from the league by strategic nuclear strike. The hiring of D’Antoni should have already sealed the deal. Dolan, Thomas and Walsh should be taken to Bellevue asap on mandatory 72-hour holds for psych evaluations.

I take it all back: the nuclear option should have been implemented when Jerome James was awarded a $30,000,000 contract. That would have obviated the Bellevue evals and everything else inflicted on Knicks fans and the league since that time.

Moving right along to Eddy Curry…

Wow! Why Would Melo Want to Join That Zoo?

Zeke is one of the worst GM’s in pro basketball history. He brought two franchises (Toronto and Ny) and one League (CBA) to near collapse. Melo would be nuta to join that curcus. Good news— we may now be able to grade Balkman—- Zeke loves the guy.

Why would anyone willingly go there

if Thomas is involved in any way, or could become involved? There may be some uncertainty about the nuggets, but Thomas is guaranteed to destroy any team he’s involved with running.

At this point, I have to think Isiah Thomas is Denver’s best chance to retain Melo.

Oh come on

People are making WAY too much of Griffin being a rookie. Who gives a damn? If he’s putting up numbers, it doesn’t matter how old he is or how long he’s been in the league. The dude is already putting up better numbers than any other PF in the game and has made his teamates better in the process. He’s even a legit MVP candidate in some senses. He definitely deserved it.

if, and its the most gigantic if in the universe but if

Blake is one of the new faces of the league

He is nice, well spoken, dunks hard and plays in a huge market….NBA wants him there, so he is in.

by Pusherman on Feb 4, 2011 5:03 PM MST up reply actions

And he deserves it.

If we are going to debate Nene being there, we should never debate Blake Griffin’s inclusion.

I don’t watch many Clippers games but:
                  1. Griffin seems to be a human highlight reel
                  2. He is averaging just under 23 and 12

The first reason defines an NBA All Star (sadly), the second one justifies an the invite regardless of age.

by MileHighHawkeye on Feb 5, 2011 10:49 AM MST up reply actions

even though griffin is a competitor in the west against the nuggets

you can help but watch the guy and wish him the best. im not gonna go all clippers fan on you or anything but i like that pure balling mentality that he has. his flagrant foul at the end of that game against atl was kind of dumb but mostly a lack of experience foul. can you imagine this guy in 3 years!

Well Nene was pretty cold

in his first 2 months of playing, he was a non factor for the first 15 or so games really, but since then he has played his best basketball ever. I think we need to extend him this offseason, then get a solid center, put Nene at PF or keep Nene at center and put the bigger guy at the 4.. I don’t think a guy like Nene cares for being an All star or not.. his PER is one of the best in the league at around 21 though.

if you haven't noticed since he married Lala he is all about celebrity crap.

Lala is trying to starscrew her way to a career and this is one of the biggest reason Melo wants to play in NY. This doesn’t bode well for his marriage, if she is so bent on celebrity status and not what is best for the family then Melo will be hooking up with Rhianna pretty soon.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
