Nate talks trade aftermath on WCWP Sports radio

A special thanks to Jordan Lauterbach and Patrick Creighton of WCWP Sports radio out of New York for having me on to talk about: Carmelo Anthony in New York, the buzz around the new Nuggets players, how the trade was perceived from the Denver Media, Raymond Felton's happiness, Chauncey Billups adjusting to Mike D'Antonio's system in New York and the Denver Stiffs name! Worst!

I hope Chauncey likes it in the big Apples.

Come home soon, buddy.

I'm quitting quitting. I'm ready to start winning.

the New York guy had a good point

with Melo basically telling Dolan to give us whatever we want or he’s going to jersey. I can honestly wish him luck, he did us right. way better than bosh or lebron did their teams.

Maybe Melo felt bad he was leaving

And wanted to give us something.
He didn’t care about winning, all that mattered was that he played at home.
I appreciate Melo if that is what he really did.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

doubt it

melo wanted his cake and to eat it too. which means the extension and the knicks. he was probably insulted the knicks wouldn’t throw in an extra player just to get him so he played it like he might sign with the nets to get the knicks to cave.

if this is getting melo’d (getting pretty much the knicks’ roster before the trade) i say it beats getting bron’d and bosh’d

Well done Nate

Good to see hear on the radio representing Nuggets Nation and Denver Stiffs. I like what you you said about Nene. Who he is as a player doesn’t make him any less valuable to a winning team and I really hope Denver keeps him.

Sadly, I agree with all the stuff about the Nuggets draft history. Although Denver is a much, much better organization now. Having Dean Oliver behind the scenes, plus Masai’s scouting background, Josh Kroenke’s experience as a college player and even Breat Bearup’s connection – there is reason to have faith in this teams ability to draft. Kiki is gone now, out of the whole NBA thank God.

Fantastic interview Nate

Thanks Charlie!

I agree about the draft going forward with the new front office, but still … it’s like having a bad experience with food poisoning or something, you don’t look at that kind of food the same after you spend some time barfing it up. I don’t mind keeping our own draft picks (you need them to re-stock the team or to keep as assets in trades), but I hate depending on the draft to build in the NBA … better served in the NFL using lots of picks to rebuild.

was just reading posting and toasting

and they seem to think a 10-25 night from melo with forced shots is due to nerves, and they didn’t like the constant melo isolation’s. HAHAHA

by donwoe on Feb 24, 2011 12:45 AM MST reply actions

Lol

That’s too funny. I like how Amare said after the game they were playing “Carmelo basketball” which basically means, give the ball to him and watch him miss over 50 percent of his shots.

yeah

they think their getting a lebron/kobe like superstar, when he’s really more of an Iverson like superstar.

by donwoe on Feb 24, 2011 1:11 AM MST up reply actions

Melo can be efficient

But he likes to force it up a lot.
I am now thinking that 2014 pick will be really useful when this experiment fails and Amare busts his knee.

by semsemma on Feb 24, 2011 9:08 AM MST up reply actions

I dont recall seeing anyone talk about nerves.

He was off. That was the case, and most of his shots were just that, missed shots. I watched the entire game and didnt once think he was forcing anything. — And the fact that he was the go to guy in some isolation plays is b/c chauncey(and he said this before the game) was going to go to him most b/c he doesnt know the tendancies of other teammates yet, or where they like the ball placed. ITs going to take soem time to gel for this new knicks team. We know melo has times where the ball stops, but that lineup last night had 0 time to practice, it was like a pickup game.

they should get used to the isolation too

if anything it gives amare and chauncey and fields and whoever else they have the opportunity to score like mad when melo is double and triple teamed. i always thought one of his greatest assets was to draw the double team like a magnet.

i dont kare if my wurds are spelt wrong.

Yikes.

Good job, Nate. And I’m glad to hear that NY radio is an equal opportunity employer; what with not discriminating about learning disabilities and speech impediments as long as the host is suitably myopic. And I say this having lived in NYC, Jersey City, and in L.A. now. These clowns ain’t too be taken none too serious.

Karl and Pringles both play at the same pace

however, I feel that Antoni’s offensive playbook is far more creative than George Karl’s, So that will take some adjusting to get to for the new players.

Worried About Karl's Statements to the Media

After reading GK’s interview with Chris Thomasson, I am worried about the fragile chemistry that any team with 5 new players (and the loss of its captains) is going to have. In his interview, Karl rambled on about Gallo being the starter at SF, JR’s bad play, and publicly proclaimed Ty the “starter”. All of George’s comments may be honest, interesting, and revealing, but I think our coach needs take a step back from his usual free flow thought process with the media and give this team some time to gel. I am worried about Ray feeling slighted for not starting (the guy was a starter and had better stats than Ty). I am worried about WC’s attitude with all of the attention going to Gallo being the starter at SF because he “plays the right way”. I am worried about JR imploding without Billups and Melo around to mediate his relationship with Karl. After coming off perhaps his best and most important contribution of the season against Memphis, Karl should have praised JR for helping the Nuggets snag a big win with his effort, energy and production. Instead, Karl made public attention of a couple of bad JR shots.

Please George, get to know your new guys and your new team, before playing talking head with the media. Your honest ramblings to the press is a formula for losing your team mentally and assuring the Nuggs of missing the playoffs. I would prefer GK say he still evaluating his team and lineups and its not clear who will ultimately replace Melo and Billups in the starting lineup. And, if JR is not going to be traded, how about laying off him in the media, particularly with his big brothers CB and Melo gone.

I really think he can be such a moron.

as far as thing about Ty/Felton goes…basically GK said Ty would be the starter for a week or two while Felton learned the system and they’d go from there. That is a perfectly reasonable answer, and I’m sure Felton is fine with that. Masai even talked with his agent (and all of the new players agents) yesterday to clarify everyone’s situation. I still wouldn’t be entirely shocked if Felton is traded either today or at the end of the season, but that’s up to the FO.

2nd, these quotes are from before the Memphis game so they aren’t really relevent to that game. I think Karl is trying to push JR to his limit, especially mentally. It could cause an implosion or it could cause a surge in his play. I do agree that he’d be better off keeping that kind of thing out of the media though.

He didn't say anything that he hasn't said in the past

I hate to admit it but Smitty just became very expendable.Even after his outing the other night, one good game isn’t enough to save the last few seasons of iffy basketball he’s produced.

how about a good season

he has been consistently good this season. maybe it took him a little longer to come along but now that he has you want to get rid of him? let me quote what everyone here has been saying about chauncey all along “but he wants to stay here, dont trade him.”

The Clippers would give up a likely top-10 lottery pick to make the savings happen. “That just shows you how much we hate this draft,” one Clippers source told ESPN.com.

Great interview Nate...

Agreed with your points on our current players and our only missed player, Chauncey Billups. I really hope BIllups can return to Denver to play at some point – know he’ll eventually make his home here post BB. More importantly, thanks for the foresight to get to know the Knicks players thoughout the season. Now we can look forward to your commentary as they transition from Knicks style BB to the Denver Nuggets. It’s going to be a lot more fun watching these young guys come in and prove themselves than to watch Melo underachieve and try to dismantle Denver’s talented roster. Go Nuggets…

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
