PrintAccording to Chris Dempsey and Benjamin Hochman, the Denver Nuggets have traded Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Renaldo Balkman, Shelden Williams and Anthony Carter to the New York Knicks for Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Timofey Mozgov and a first round pick in 2014, the Warriors 2012 second round pick, the Warriors 2013 second round pick and $3 million cash.

Melo’s a top ten player but all the players ahead of him were drafted with him or since him with the exception of Kobe. I’m talking Durant, Rose, Lebron, CP3, DWill, Brandon Roy (some of these are questionable, I know).

and I hope he goes to a title contender next season. But we needed to do this for the best of the franchise, it’s not about one player it’s about a team. Uriji deserves exec of year consideration, Melo was hell bent on one team and we managed to get a ton out of them. Thanks for the memories Melo. Time for a new beginning in Nuggets basketball.

Galo is going to be a VERY good player
He gets to the line more than Melo does and shoots about 4% higher from beyond the 3 and he is better from 2 point range as well.

Looking forward to a new, Melo-less era. The lone bit of good news amongst a lot of bad news: dragging it out over five months let us come to terms with Melo’s inevitable departure. Still feels weird, but the shock value isn’t really there anymore.

Its likely the Knicks don’t get a top 5 pick but they haven’t locked up a playoff spot yet so theres still a chance their in the lottery. Larry Coon old chat
So here’s the Knicks’ situation: They will have a 2011 first round pick (either their own or Houston’s). They have traded away their 2012 pick (again to Houston), but it’s top-5 protected all the way to 2015. If the 2012 pick is in the top-5 then Houston gets their 2013 pick instead. If the 2013 pick is top-5, then they get the 2014 pick. If the 2014 pick is in the top-5 then they get their 2015 pick. it was unfortunately for us Knicks fans wayy more than we wanted to give up….and i know you guys have stated over and over here that we aren’t giving up that much, they’re all role players and such, but we’re still losing 3/5 of our starting lineup(and a super sub) and that can gut a team out. i think that u guys will be pleasantly surprised by some of the guys you decide to keep here(if that NJ deal is still up) and will find out that it wasn’t necessarily our garbage we were giving you.

I think you may be forgetting about the other players involved in the trade.
You may have lost 3/5 starters, but you are getting 2 if not 3 or 4 guys who can play legitimate minutes in the NBA. They were stuck riding the pine here because of George Karl’s short bench rotation, but Shelden Williams and Renaldo Balkman can both play ball. Many of the people who post here constantly were calling for GK to give them minutes. Chauncey and Melo will both start for you(unless Billups gets bought out), and Williams and Balkman should be solid bench contributors.
Good luck with Anthony Carter though….

Great trade for you guys (as usual). Gallinari is pretty underrated, despite being one of the most efficient scorers at his position. Chandler is kind of overrated, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you guys flipped him.
Sad to see Billups get screwed like this, though. The guy really liked Denver (which I like to think is why Joe D traded him to you guys, and not his stupid man-crush on Iverson). Sucks that he had to get forced out on account of Melo.

Yahoo! Sports is indeed reporting that Corey Brewer will be sent to the Denver Nuggets as part of the Carmelo Anthony trade. The Denver Post is reporting the same.
Essentially, from a Timberwolves’ perspective, they’ve traded Corey Brewer for Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry. The rumors that had been circulated over the weekend had the Wolves also sending a first round pick away as part of the deal, but none of the outlets that have been reporting on the trade have mentioned anything along those lines yet.

After lookin at some of these guys stats, I kinda like Felton and Gallo a little more. I had no idea Felton averaged 17 and 9. I’m kind of excited to see this team play esp with Nene at the 4. He very well could average 20 a game with Gallo and AAA being consistent outside threats and Felton staying a steady distributor. Interesting indeed

we must try the Spurs route with no superstars. We have money room finally too. Next year’s draft is not good except for the team getting Sullinger. But again it comes down to losing Melo for nothing or losing him for this. A Nets trade was not happening.

Ya’ll will love Gallo. He game has been steadily getting better this season. Gets to the line at will, is a bit streaky from 3, but is always a threat from beyond the arc. And can knock down in the clutch. He takes it to the rim in a unorthodox but very successful way.
Chandler is the most chill guy in the NBA, whether he’s getting a game winning block against josh childress or is bangin on the celtics bigs. His face is always o_o

Saw the news, and have to comment.
While I am not a HUGE fan of basketball, my parents raised me right to support the home team, so I will continue to support the Nuggets. I was never a huge fan of Melo, but Chauncey being traded saddens me (like mentioned above, my mom isn’t gonna have a jersey to wear. Sad.)
Anyways, I wish the best to Chauncey and Melo too, I guess, in NY, and hope the Nuggets can start a new era well.

I really hope we don’t send Felton to the Nets. Apart from that, I’m pretty satisfied with everything, all things considered. That being said, I hate that Billups was dragged into this mess. Felton must be disgruntled that he’s getting shipped away too. He really contributed to the Knicks and helped them achieve much of their success this year.

I'm generally impressed
by how the FO ended up with the situation. I thought they were gonna have egg all over their face after the Nets pulled back a month ago thinking the package was going to be like Curry, Chandler and a future 1st rounder. I give them a lot of credit, or at least a lot of luck/foresight in seeing NJ coming back in the picture, for holding out for a decent deal.
I’m not personally crazy about who we got back but I think the value isn’t half bad which says a lot.

I am a Knick fan and am happy to get a player of Melo’s caliber but I will say that you Nugget fans are getting 4 great guys and good players in Felton, Gallo, Chandler and Mozgov. I think Gallo has the chance to be a legit all-star in this league and Felton is as tough as nails. Chandler is a silent assassin and Mozgov has some great size and potential. Good luck to them and the Nuggets.

rockets were lucky to have lowry, no one saw brooks struggling like he is, he is having a really bad year, lowry got the starting job because brooks is in a season long slump not vice versa.

Some info on Knicks pick being included per Larry Coon Twitter
I’m still trying to find out the skinny on the Knicks’ 2014 draft pick. They can’t just send that pick out — it’s already potentially going to Houston, as is 2013 & 2015 pick — so Stepien rule would prevent this. Could be NY is getting a pick in this deal somewhere, or the pick goes in the "first allowable draft" after Houston pick is conveyed. Third possibility is that they have a side deal with HOU to change pick protection. Fourth possibility is that its really another team’s first round pick in 2014.
BTW, the trade call is probably tomorrow morning. They can reconfigure deal ‘til then, and parameters aren’t set ’til then.

the protections on the pick start in 2012 so the first year NY finishes out of the top 5 starting in 2012 Houston gets their first rounder and you guys get NY’s from the next year. So if NY has 6th pick or lower in 2012 houston gets that pick and denver gets NYs the next year

2014 sounds right because they can’t trade 2013 because they don’t have pick in 2012.
So most likely Houston gets 2013 pick and Denver gets 2014. Unless NY’s pick in 2013 is top 5 then it rolls to 2014 and Denver gets 2015 1st.

OK, so I dont understand why we have to go completely into a rebuilding mode now.
Why are so many of you guys looking to trade all of the players we got for Carmelo? The way it sounds, half of you expect to gut the roster. When “rebuilding” or “retooling” why not try to keep Nene, who is one of the better, more well rounded big men in the league, and keep mozgov, a huge young player to allow Nene to play PF? Martins expiring means we will have cap room, and we could always resign him for cheap next year. Anderson can play backup C, but now have have Gallinari Harrington, Chandler to play SF. Myabe trade one of them for a pick. Is Ty ready to run the team? I dont know, you have a proven starter in Felton, who could be a borderline allstar, why not keep him and have the extra depth at PG? AAA and Smith at SG. This is a solid, hard working , fast, taller team that could be good. Maybe not great, but good. No reason to gut the roster for a ton of Draft picks, when they may not even pan out. Besides, unless you are getting high first rounders, all of the players we just got would be better than what we could get in 2nd round or lst. I’m not the only one thinking this am I???

bottom line is
good but not great is a recipe for a 1st round playoff exit or 9th/10th seed where you don’t get playoffs and no chance to draft a star in the draft. Would you not do the rumored 3 way trade where we send mozgov and felton to the nets for 2 1sts, one of which would be the lottery 2011 nets pick and something from dallas(beaubois prbly)

Unless its for high picks it's not worth it.
The guys we just got are better than we could get in the draft, and they are still young (most of them).
The nuggets have a history of flameouts int he first round, even with our “great” teams, why not go the SAN antonio way, get a bunch of good roleplayers, borderline stars, and have them actually play as a TEAM

but chandler was 23rd and mozgov went undrafted… Also, we’ve already commited the starting pg role to ty. And the clippers were offering the high twolves pick for gallo
Then do it but who plays backup PG?
Im for a trade if it is a HIGH pick with a plyer we dont need because of depth, but if we trade felton we dont have a quality PG backup.

Sandy Kough once pointed out that Nene's +/- numbers against Amare are actually in Nene's favor...
And even somewhat lopsided. That may have changed over the last year, but If I remember correctly , they both had big games in a match up earlier this year, somewhat canceling each other out!

as far as stats go, he’s slightly better than dampier which isn’t saying much but dampier has had years to develop and has a career avg of 7/7. fingers crossed.

Martin has been one of the biggest problems for the Nuggets. Between his contract and his injuries.
His contract is an albatross, and he only plays half the games. When he is in, hes a good defensive presence and maybe a team leader. But he can do that as a backup, for a much much smaller contract.

We need to trade Martin while we can.
We have waited years to get to this point of an expiring contract. He is more valueable now than ever. Lets trade him for a pick or better yet a guy from a team going nowhere that wants a salary dump. How about Gerald Wallace from Charlotte or Anderson Varejao from Cleveland
Ty, Tebow, and Tulo. Everything is better with a T.

So gotta insert my two cents:
I think the FO did a good job of trying to build a team centered around Melo the first 6 years of his time in Denver. They could have gone after a big last year, but were still one of the best teams in the league until KMart got hurt and Karl got cancer. Unfortunately, Melo took that to mean the team couldn’t get any further as constructed and decided he wanted out.
I honestly think the FO decided that Melo isn’t a player that’s going to lead you to a title. He’s a dam good #2, but not going to will his team to victory a la Jordan or Kobe, etc. I’m very grateful for the time Melo gave to the Nugs, brought them back to respectability (I remember the 90’s); but I think this move was needed for the organization.
I think the current team (barring any further trades) might actually play more efficiently and have more ball movement and movement without the ball . . . I’m actually excited to watch basketball for one of the first times all year rather than worrying/thinking about the pending Melo watch.
I don’t like giving Billups, but it was the only way the Nugs were going to get something of value in return with the corner Melo put them in. I trust that he understands this and hope he’ll come back to the organization to finish his career/retire and join the front office where he belongs. Amazingly, as much as I rooted for and defended Melo in his time here, I’ll miss CB more. I think this sets the Nugs up well if they can make some smart moves in the next few days/years. Well done to Masai and thank you to the Nets for pushing the Knicks offer.

I believe both teams did well.. The nuggets are looking to rebuild, dump some salary, and draft picks.. they did that. The Knicks were looking for another star while staying under the salary cap for 2012.. and they accomplished that. Win Win for both teams…
The lost of Melo will hurt, but JR is sooo talented! But that’s also he’s problem, he’s soooo talented. I think he’ll use this opportunity to step his “mental” game up.

Kincks might be in trouble trying to surround Amare and Melo with a good team next year though
Especially if they pick up Chanucy’s option (which has been rumored tonight) . . . and double especially if the CBA gets an overhaul and the salary cap drops as expected:
~$22M for Amare

~$14 M for CB
That’s ~$58 M for three players! And I love Chauncy, but he’s no spring chicken. That would be a ticking time bomb for the Knicks.

Ya, for some reason I dont see the team being that much worse without melo.
Better on defense, probably better on size and ball movement with this trade. If JR / Nene take a couple small steps we probably could be better.
More team ball and more fun to watch IMO.
Might struggle to score at will, but I think that will lead to better defense and a more concerted effort throughout games.
My biggest frustration with the Nugs the past few years is it seemed like they knew they were talented and played when they wanted.

Damn Nene is our best player.
I know people want Lawson to be the franchise player, but I think its pretty clear he is still young whereas Nene is one of the longest serving nuggets, a good near allstar player who can play D, runt he floor, pass well, score accurately, and play PF or C for us. All very valuable on a relatively cheap contract.
I've always felt Nene has been under-appreciated
That happens when players have injuries.
People miss his all-around game skills
Lots of stuff that doesn’t show in the stats.
I think the game against the Bucks the other night showed that Ty isn't quite ready to run the team.
He seems to be not quite ready to play against some of the more wiley veteran PGs yet. When faced with the challenge, he wants to rely on his speed, but a vet with speed(like Earl Boykins) really seemed to have him out of sorts. I think that means Nene is definitely our best all around player. Look at the way he handles guys like T. Chandler and E. Dampier in the playoffs 2 years ago. If he gets minutes at PF and is more comfortable there, look out!

Ya I hope these players we got are motivated.
People need to understand that if you try hard in Denver that the fans will appreciate and love you for it. I enjoy watching players who are working hard, even if t hey arent the best out there.
So what's the plan from this point?
4 knicks starters + 3 nuggets starters makes for interesting rotations.
I feel like we could retool and still be competive.
Maybe better than we were before. It is hard to replace Melo’s crunch time scoring, and the leadership that Billups brings, but denver should be better defensively, and have more size, than we used to have. Maybe better on the boards and ball movement too. They are also younger, and have more future picks. I think its a pretty decent position to be in.
Dont discount the second round picks those can be traded for late first round
picks that teams don’t want to use to pay salary on.

sorry it says that Knicks wont be better than 4th or 5th this year or next then
when it comes time to sign Paul or D will they will only have about 11 million to sign them which is not enough to get them. So enjoy mediocrity 45-50 wins and first round exits…sounds like a lot of what we had here with Melo.

This may be a dumb question, but...
I keep reading that this was a 3 team deal between the knicks, nuggets and t-wolves, but if the nuggets didn’t get anything from the t-wolves, doesn’t that qualify it as 2 sperate 2 team deals? Not that it makes a difference…
One other thought….
If the Nuggets squeeze in as the 8th seed in the wast, and have to face the spurs, would that seem to be a favorable match-up? If the older Spurs are fading at the end of the season, and the new look Nuggets have developed some chemistry, could there be an upset in the making?
To answer your first question
It’s basically two seperate two team deals, at least that’s what it looks like from the outside. But in order to get the salaries to work (the Knicks have to send out close to as much salary as they take in) the twolves part of the trade had to be included as part of the trade with the Nuggets.

I don’t have time to look over the 1300 or so posts, but I just want to say how sad I am that Billups got caught up in MElo’s diva act. I’m very sad to see him leave (again). I hope he returns to Denver someday and that he knows the fans stand behind him 100%. Melo on the other hand, that’s a completely different story. It actually makes me a little sick to my stomach.
