With all of the talk surrounding Melo, which has gone on forever by the way, one question has clearly been lost. What jersey number would Melo want, and is it important to him?
Everyone who has ever been involved in organized sports, know that it's clearly more than just a number. A lot of hours and thoughts are worked through before settling for a number. Sometimes your number is already taken and you have to come up with a new, but clearly it must have crossed Melo's mind, right?
We already know that NY is clearly Melo's choice, but does he realize the situation he would be in? I understand that there's more important issues at work, but we/he can't just nonchalant this either!
With the rich history of the Knicks franchise, it's only natural that a lot of jerseys have been retired. Melo's own number 15 is retired by the great Earl Monroe. The number from Melo's Oak Hill days, 22, is also unavailable (Dave DeBusschere). The Nets on the other hand has both numbers available.
Has Melo given this a thought? My guess is Melo would pick his old favorite players number - Bernard King 30 if he went to the Knicks. We all can't wait for this drama to end, but clearly there's more decisions for Melo to make after any trade gets completed.
