Golden Nuggets: NBA free agency officially opens today!

Welcome to the official opening of the NBA free agency period my fellow Stiffs! In less than four-hours, 12 p.m. MTN, players will be allowed to sign contracts with NBA teams. We shall find out soon the fates of Arron Afflalo, Nene, Gary Forbes, and many others. And how about that Lakers, Hornets, and Rockets trade that was cancelled late last night? Get ready for a wild ride!

Star-divide

Lots of people seem worried about the precedent set last night by the NBA when the league owners put pressure on David Stern to cancel the trade that would have sent Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers. Well, the only way the league was really able to do such a thing is because the 29 owners are in control of the New Orleans Hornets at the moment.

But is that the only way this happened? All trades must be reviewed by the league office, so could more trades in the future be blocked? Here is my problem with the league blocking this particular trade:

  1. The Hornets did a good job making the Lakers give up their second and third leading scorers; who also double as 2/3 of the team's seven footer squad. This trade made the Lakers a much different team and the Lakers gave up actual players to do the deal.
  2. The Hornets got some good value in return in Lamar Odom and then shipping Pau Gasol to the Rockets in exchange for Goran Dragic, Kevin Martin, Luis Scola and at least one first round pick (the Knicks 2012 pick). NOLA could have easily flipped Odom and Scola for more assets this season as both guys have tons of value for a team in contention of the title.
  3. Does the league just want to see Chris Paul sign with the Lakers, Knicks, or some other market in the off-season without the Hornets getting any value for him? If that is the case, they need to contract the team in NOLA ASAP as they will not survive losing CP3 for nothing.

Strange times.

Lost in the shuffle are two things.

  1. Dwight Howard has asked to be traded to the New Jersey Nets; in exchange the Nets will send their poo-poo platter offer to the Magic.
  2. FREE AGENCY OPENS IN LESS THAN FOUR HOURS!!!!

Other

Seemed like a very fair trade for NO to me. Very bad trade for the rest of the NBA if the Lakers were also able to set up a Dwight Howard trade, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The Chris Paul situation is different than the previous one’s because the NO franchise has major problems just staying in business. They are never going to be able to survive in that location.

I agree with this other

…it was a pretty fair trade. Certainly as “fair” as the Melo deal, especially with the picks.

by Pusherman on Dec 9, 2011 8:50 AM MST up reply actions

Much worse

Than the Melo trade because there was no young talent coming back. I am certain NOLA could do better. Getting good players like Gasol, Odom, Scola, etc. doesn’t help them much because they are not going to make them contendors. And while they could flip them, Demps had gone ahead and flipped the best piece, Gasol, for more older players and crappy draft picks.

Other than supposed interest...

There’s been precious little news about Nene’s intentions.
Tell me that’s a very good thing, please?

by TakeFive on Dec 9, 2011 8:47 AM MST reply actions

Well, with the Rockets not landing Pau Gasol, the Rockets pitch to Nene has drastically changed. So that may help the Nuggets cause. … that is if Nene actually was considering going there.

NBA Just stalling..

I think the NBA was just stalling Paul so the Lakers wouldn’t get both Howard and Paul. Once Howard goes to the Nets.. Paul to the Lakers. They world will stop screaming and the NBA super powers will be set..

And the Nugget underdog role will be reaffirmed. Just how big of an underdog is determined by Nene and AAA at this point.

Interesting theory

Meanwhile, Knicks killed any last chance of going after Paul by signing Chandler. I’m sure they figured Paul to LA was a done deal.

You lose a very good big AND a productive big for a great guard, why would lakers do that?

You can start a team with Gasol and Odom, put a star around them (like Kobe) and you got yourself a contender. What are the Lakers thinking and why would the NBA object.

The Hornets made out like bandits in this deal.

by sgiustra on Dec 9, 2011 10:26 AM MST up reply actions

NBA didn't own the Grizzlies

Each one of the NBA owners pitched in to buy the Hornets, so they all feel they have a say, even thought Demps is supposed to have power. Stern screwed Demps.

Agree or disagree, it brings the NBA into disrepute. It just looks bad from all angles.

I can’t say this enough, Stern has got to go.

Did you all read Simmon’s rant on Grantland this morning? I largely agree.

I also agree with Gilbert’s big issues with the trade. Something sure seemed fishy to me from the get go, and he and others smelled it.

Not quite that simple

The point is the lockout solved none of the problems is professed to be about: crazy player movement, collusion, out-of-control salaries, owners being stupid with money, small market teams being bamboozled by big ones.

The Paul trade and the tampering stuff just shows that the NBA has a ton of lingering problems. A ton. As a fan of basketball, it kills me that the pro league is such a shit show. And Stern is the man in charge and, ultimately, the responsible party. He best be done by the end of this season.

The league is run by Stern and consists of the 30 team owners

But in this case the league only has 29 owners, since team #30, New Orleans, is owned by the other 29 teams. So they do have VETO power.

The 29 owners all own a stake in the Hornets

And since they want to recoup their investment, they know they need to get good value for Paul if they are going to make the Hornets an appealing team for some buyer somewhere.

I don’t think this was motivated by Laker hate and fear of Howard ended up there — though that was likely part of it — but a legit concern that the trade really wasn’t that good, long term, for the Hornets.

by Fly Agaric on Dec 9, 2011 10:26 AM MST up reply actions

I agree

I know there is a bunch of so called experts on BSPN saying that this trade was good for the Hornets, but I disagree to a large extent. Even though CP3 is leaving, and they may get nothing in return, so the thought is get something for him, there is still time. Just as we learned with Melo last year, sometimes the offers get better with time.

NO was taking back an awful lot of salary in this deal.

Heck, I’d prefer CP3 to the Clippers for Kaman and Minnesota’s 1st Rounder. And if they can get the Clippers 1st rounder as well, hell, that’s a steal.

Denver needs a backup wingman. He’s more of a PF type than a scoring PG/SG, but I won’t quibble. There is a need for a tough as nails defender with K-Mart on Chinese vacation.

We could potentially get Mbah a Moute actually.

Forgot they just signed Dunleavy yesterday. Checked out an article on Brew Hoop from, got this quote:

While there have been strong indications that the Bucks would like to re-sign Luc Mbah a Moute and keep former second round picks Darington Hobson and Jon Leuer, Milwaukee also remains in need of a backup center and was short on wing shooters just a day before camp and free agency were set to open on Friday. Dunleavy fills the latter hole and figures to challenge Carlos Delfino for the starting small forward position, and all at a rather reasonable, low-risk price of $7.5 million over two years. He also provides cover in the event that Luc Mbah a Moute signs an offer sheet outside of the Bucks’ comfort zone. I won’t go so far as to say the Dunleavy move precludes Luc’s return, but it certainly doesn’t help.

We have to sign someone regardless to get to the cap floor, and even with the talent we have, we will be an OK team

by NugzJunkie on Dec 9, 2011 11:18 AM MST up reply actions

Ok, 15 games

Look at that line up again. It is either inexperienced or washed up,with the exception of AAA, Ty and Gallo. Nene and a very good 6th man make all the difference.

by Pusherman on Dec 9, 2011 11:22 AM MST up reply actions

15 wins this year equates to about 20 normally

so I guess it is possible they are that bad. I just don’t see it. Even with the team they currently have signed, our back court is still amazing with Ty, Miller, and AAA. Guard play goes a long way to success in this league. We have a good player in Gallo who could become even better this year, we have Harrington who can still score, we have two 7 footers plus Bird, and we have two rookies who could have an impact.

Plus, if Nene goes, we have to sign others just to get to the cap floor. So there will be other talent plus the talent I listed above. I still think the minimum this team wins this year is 30. .500 this year is 33 wins

What exactly does NJ have to offer for Dwight? Dwill’s not going anywhere, Lopez isn’t near enough, and all other assets were used to get Dwill. I don’t see Dwight going there-Orlando can do much better. Depending on how this Paul thing shakes out, I still think he goes to LA.

The biggest things they offer are

1. Brook Lopez
2. The ability to take back Hedo’s terrible contract

I am sure NJ will throw in some other assets, future picks (whatever they can come up with), but taking on Hedo’s contract is huge for giving Orlando future flexibility.

Offical statement on the Paul fiasco

This just released from the NBA league office.

In response to inquiries, NBA Commissioner David Stern released the following statement:

Since the NBA purchased the New Orleans Hornets, final responsibility for significant management decisions lies with the Commissioner’s Office in consultation with team chairman Jac Sperling. All decisions are made on the basis of what is in the best interests of the Hornets. In the case of the trade proposal that was made to the Hornets for Chris Paul, we decided, free from the influence of other NBA owners, that the team was better served with Chris in a Hornets uniform than by the outcome of the terms of that trade."

The New Jersey Nets are preparing to offer a four-year, $60 million-$65 million contract to free-agent center Nene, aggressively pushing to steal him away from the Denver Nuggets, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

One thing that we underestimate is the pride factor. I don’t think Josh and Co. want to trade Melo, and less then a year later get stuck in the lottery. They want a good product and, as long as there is cap room, they will pay for it.

Update: Howard Beck: “Tyson Chandler deal will be done today, w/Billups amnestied, according to source. Not clear where Turiaf going yet, but he’ll be traded.”
Also:
Update: Beck again: Knicks have about 5 scenarios in play for trading Turiaf to clear more cap room for Tyson Chandler. One of them gets done today, I’m told.

Update: ESPN’s Tim McMahon: Tyson Chandler confirms on ESPN 103.3’s Ben and Skin Show that he’s agreed with the Knicks. NO sign-and-trade with the Mavs.

Mark cuban on letting Chandler and Butler Walk
The reality is that in the new system, cap room will have far more value than it had in the past. I realize that everyone is all freaked out about how and where free agents and future free agents are going, but it’s not just about getting one guy.

We are not saving cap room in hope of that one super special free agent being there. It’s about being in the position to improve every year and possibly add some significant, younger players next year and in future years.

What I don’t think people understand is that once a team hits the tax level the ability to improve our team is reduced dramatically. In addition, your ability to make trades is reduced. So basically, if we made the move to keep everyone together with five-year deals, the team we have today is going to be the team we have for the next five years. If we were a young team it would be one thing. But we are not a young team.

In the past, it was different. If we had a problem, I could fix any mistake by having Donnie find a trade and just taking on more money. … That trick doesn’t work any more for teams over the tax. So we have to change our approach.

The hard cap on luxury teams isn’t getting enough attention. Cuban understands it.

In the midst of fans exploding on Twitter in anger,

I love that the NBA blogosphere has got the complete opposite opinions, and has it right.

RT @ticktock6 I would kill to have been able to sign Marcus Thornton for 8 million. Love him. So high on him.
RT @tomhaberstroh Go compare Marcus Thornton’s numbers in Sacramento to Eric Gordon’s last season. Virtually identical. Good value for Kings.
RT @MikePradaSBN Thornton averaged 22 a game down the stretch. It’s a fair deal. He’s better than (Nick) Young. But do the #Wizards agree?
RT @HPbasketball: GREAT move by the Kings, and Thornton will be worth it. Just have to ditch Salmons.
RT @talkhoops Great contract. Wow. RT @Chris_Broussard: Marcus Thornton signed with Sac Kings for $40 million over five years, source says

Fairly long, but SI's take.
Here’s an interesting one: The Kings, with Jimmer Fredette, Tyreke Evans and John Salmons already on hand in the back court, have decided to make re-sign Marcus Thornton to a five-year, $40 million deal, according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard. That’s a big contract, even for a team flush with cap space both this season and next, with lots of room to cover before it hits the minimum floor. But Thornton can score, and he loves to shoot. He averaged better than 21 per game once New Orleans, always concerned about Thornton’s tendency to get himself out of position on defense, flipped him to the Kings for Carl Landry last season. He has been an above-average shooter from deep, and he showed after the trade last season that he toss some smart passes out of the pick-and-roll if need be.

Even at this price, Thornton is a young, attractive asset, the kind of player a small-market club is wise to lock up early. His presence gives the Kings all sorts of back-court versatility, allowing Fredette to roam off the ball if he prefers and Tyreke Evans to experiment at small forward. Having guys who can play with the second unit and create their own shot is always good.

The defensive issues are real, but Thornton is young, and he’ll improve with time. The Kings will have decisions to make going forward as other young players–Evans, J.J. Hickson, Jason Thompson, etc.–come off rookie deals, and having Thornton locked up brings some stability to things. Also: Spending $8 million on a 24-year-old means there is $8 million less around to spend on over-the-hill veterans just to meet the minimum salary floor. There's no way Chauncey excepts a backup role, IMHO

Bringing him back just means drama and inhibiting Ty’s growth.

Looks like he is a 6'6" PG who played at UTEP

Could be our Forbes replacement.

Julyan Stone is an awesome pick up

All-time leader in assists at UTEP (keep in mind Tim Hardaway went there). Hard-nosed defender. Finally when we play 2 pgs at once, one will at least be 6’6

from NBADraft.net

Strengths: Extremely versatile guard … Blessed with the natural ability to play PG and size to play three different positions … Strong athleticism with very good leaping ability and explosiveness … Smooth, quick first step … Good penetrator that spends a lot of time in the paint … Has become very efficient over his four years at UTEP, finishing his last season at 53% … Tall for a point guard with very long arms … Excellent court vision … Sees over the defense and doesn’t miss open teammates … Gets them the ball in a position where they can score easily … Knows how to feed post players … Makes good decisions with the ball in transition … Trusts his teammates and has their trust as well … Doesn’t turn the ball over often … Plays hard and hustles everywhere on the floor … Averaged 7.5 rebounds in his senior season despite playing the point guard position … Has the toughness, lateral quickness and long arms to be a blanket on defense … Has the potential to defend 1s, 2s and 3s at the next level …

Weaknesses: Non-existent scoring ability … Despite playing 36.5 minutes per game in the fairly weak Conference USA, he only averaged 8.5 points per game … Very poor shooter … Lacks any range on his jump shot … Opponents will have no respect for his shooting ability and play off him, which will make him an easy player to defend, and inhibit his playmaking abilities … Solid finishing ability around the rim, but won’t get as many opportunities there at the next level … Poor free-throw shooter at 56% … Had four years to improve his shooting ability, yet never managed to do so …

Overall: Stone is a very interesting prospect, but won’t have an easy path to the NBA … PGs over 6’4 can be counted on one hand and seem to becoming obsolete … He would be an ideal role-player at the next level if he could become a respectable shooter and maybe take advantage of his size by taking smaller defenders into the post … His versatility may get his name called in the second round of this year’s draft, but he needs to patch up some of the major holes in his game if he wants to play in the NBA any time soon

I'm okay whatever happens

Just hope we don’t overpay for anyone to be honest. I like Afflalo a lot, but if some teams proposes some crazy offer, and we lose him then we’ll just have to play someone else a lot of minutes.

Dunno who to be honest tho.

by nugzin2040 on Dec 9, 2011 5:34 PM MST reply actions

I'm totally OK with overpaying for Nene

$15 million a year for 5 years might seem like a lot for some people here. But… The fact is, he’s the piece to the puzzle here. And Nene seems like the sort who will man up and be the man if given a contract like that.

OK with paying a bit more for AAA, too. I mean, at least these are devils we know, you know? And it isn’t like there is a shortage of cap room, either.

"No one likes a beggar slightly overdressed"

by Fly Agaric on Dec 9, 2011 5:38 PM MST up reply actions

If he really wants to be here...

But I don’t think he does. Wants to get paid.. doesn’t probably care if he gets signed by New Jersey and traded later to Orlando and is in a losing situation for the next four years either.

jmo tho.

I’m ok overpaying on Afflalo but not if it’s $50 million over 4 years.

by nugzin2040 on Dec 9, 2011 5:56 PM MST up reply actions   1 recs

If Nene leaves to Jersey

we need to seriously consider just trading for Chauncey and then buying out his contract to get us to the cap floor. It be the smartest move for us, keeps us from getting stuck with a terrible contact and keeps us with cap space for next year. Plus it couldn’t hurt doing right by Chauncey

by donwoe on Dec 9, 2011 6:03 PM MST up reply actions

has he?

all there has been so far is reports right? guess it would be better if he was amnestied then we could just put a bid in for him for the difference between the cap floor and Afflalo’s salary. i imagine we would still be able to buy him out, i was just reading over on round ball mining company that amnestied players can be traded 30 days after they are awarded to a team

by donwoe on Dec 9, 2011 6:13 PM MST up reply actions

Now That I Think About It

This could be it, right here, right now. If the Nuggets manage to lose both
Nene and Afflalo then they’d very likely be in line for a Top Three pick in the draft.
Based on a consensus of the Top Three draft sites they would be:

  • Anthony Davis PF 6-10 220 Fr. Kentucky
  • Andre Drummond C 6-10 279 Fr UConn
  • Harrison Barnes SF 6-8 223 So No. Carolina

Who should we pick?

by TakeFive on Dec 9, 2011 6:10 PM MST reply actions

Davis or Drummond

I like Gallo as our future 3. A lot more uncertain about where we are at PF and C. I like Davis a lot.

by nugzin2040 on Dec 9, 2011 6:15 PM MST up reply actions

I'd take Barnes for sure.

Highest potential for superstardom, Drummond and Davis will be good, but how many Centers are really superstars? Dwight, Oden could’ve been, and really the next chance is maybe DeMarcus Cousins?
(I’m a pretty big college bball fan, I was at that game that UNLV upset #1 North Carolina, was craaazy, and worth every cent even if I’m not a fan of either team).

HOWEVER, I’d much prefer us to get 2 or 3 lottery picks than the top pick. If we can pick up guys like Kidd-Gilchrist, Rivers, Teague, Miller, Henson, Lamb, etc., there’s a HIGH chance we get at least one superstar out of them. The downside is that the only real big men with potential will be going in the top 6, (Drummond, Davis, Sullinger, Jones) but I’m sure we can find some talent to shore up our front line.

Just PLEASE, for the love of everything, no one advocate for drafting Tyler Zeller. I might cry.

Here's an update/correction from Sactown
Marcus Thorton will indeed remain with the Sacramento Kings, but according to Sam Amick of SI.com the deal will be for $33 million over four years. ESPN has previously inaccurately reported that the deal would be for five years, $40 million.

by TakeFive on Dec 9, 2011 7:23 PM MST reply actions

Some serious secret intrigue also from Sactown
n case you’ve missed the discussion in the comment threads or on Twitter, Grant Napear has said on today’s show on 1140 The Fan that the Kings are talking about big-name player fans will be excited about, with news of a deal possibly coming on Saturday. It’s not an All-Star level player, but Napear has been adamant that it’s a “big name” and that it’s not a guard.

After eyeballing the various teams and cruising a few blogs

There just isn’t that many teams with cap space or likely to be overly aggressive in pursuing our Nuggets. I’m wondering if the Nets even know what they want to do?

by TakeFive on Dec 9, 2011 7:39 PM MST reply actions

seriously, Nene is the back up plan for Howard?

Nene decision pending....

Woj updates the scene: mostly a change of “did” from “will”

The New Jersey Nets made a four-year, $60 million-$65 million contract offer to free-agent center Nene, aggressively pushing to steal him away from the Denver Nuggets, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Nets general manager Billy King was presented the offer to Nene’s agent Dan Fegan on Friday. Nene could make a decision as soon as Friday night.

Oh well, I hope they can stop the Heat. I think LBJ making excuses just really rubs me the wrong way. I don’t know how much West and Bass can help them and they lost the draft Purdue forward guy.
I really really respect Wade, and don’t know why LBJ acts like a little kid and has to have Wade take all the pressure off him.
I like the Heat for Wade, but really dislike them because of LBJ (btw I thought LBJ was overrated before the decision, but now that I heard he acted like a pompous princess, I disliked him).

There is a rumbling that Howard is weighing interest from Chi, NJ, Washigton, Utah, and Denver. More then sure it’s leveraging us…but dare to dream.

If you could swap Howard for something like Lawson, Chandler rights, Hamilton, Mozgov, 1st round pick this year and 2014 with the NYK pick there.

You put in a claim on Billups and resign Nene. You could have that team with amnestying only Harrington.

There is one and a million shot. At this point I have no clue who the Nugs will spend there money on if Nene is gone. BTW David West S&T to Celtics.

I find that reassuring. Others won’t. But after last season’s MeloDrama and its damn decent conclusion, we seem to be in good hands—even if things don’t break our way. A good GM can’t control everything, eh?

They can amnesty Meta

But they have no cap flexibility. That happens when Kobe is making over 20 million a year. I could see them being forced to take back Ariza and amnestying Meta. But it’s going to be Lakers picks + Bynum for Howard. Not sure I’d be taking that deal if I was Orlando.

Lakers will score big with the proposed trade as they lose lot of salary and can easily

have more cap space to swing a trade with Orlando Magic for Howard and taking the contract of Hedo…

I wish Howard goes to Nets.. if he goes to Lakers (with / without chris paul), We can easily crown them the champions next year..

I am not sure why Lakers does not make a play for Howard and then pick up the amnestied Billups? they may not need Paul in that case…

by Kumar_98 on Dec 10, 2011 7:10 AM MST reply actions

quick question

When a team under salary cap picks up a amnestied player, what salary counts toward amnesty?

If the player like Billups retire, do the team still pay Billups his salary (even if he retires)? becoz for teams that can’t make the salary cap floor, it is a perfect world to pick up Billups or someone like him to reach the floor?

by Kumar_98 on Dec 10, 2011 7:39 AM MST reply actions

Everything is removed from the original team

The amount you bid would count towards your cap if you pick them up.

So If Billups was due 15 mil is amnestied 0 cap hit on Knicks. They pay him 15 mil.

If a team bids on his and wins him for say 4 million. New team gets 4 million cap hit and pays him 4 million. NYK have 0 cap hit but pay him 11 million.

by TakeFive on Dec 10, 2011 9:33 AM MST up reply actions

and what if the player retires as Billups threatens

Do the bidding team still get a cap hit and has to pay the bidding amount?
or bidding team only gets a cap hit, but don’t have to pay him (as he has retired)
or bidding team do not get cap hit and don’t have to pay him?

If we're willing to give Nene 15, then lets throw that money at Marc Gasol

I know memphis says they will match, but they are in salary chaos. You don’t max gay and randolph. Give Conley a bloated contracted, and plenty of other sizeable contracts such as OJ and Toney allen, and come out of this ok.

by TyLawesome on Dec 10, 2011 10:47 AM MST up reply actions

Problem with Gasol is Mozgov

You can play Nene at 4 next to Moz. But Gasol and Moz are essentially the same guy. Big stiff centers with little offense. Can’t play them at the same time.

Most Important Question of the Day

It appears that all the hub-bub over the CP3 trade AND Magic tampering threats has calmed down. IF Orlando decides to go ahead and deal now, then the Nets will be hard charging and so would likely put Nene’s offer on ice
at least temporarily.

Dallas, one of three teams in pursuit, with permission, on Howard, has been helped by getting a large trade exception from the Chandler signing.

by TakeFive on Dec 10, 2011 10:43 AM MST reply actions

Howard is out of there

it is just a question of when. It sounds like he wants New Jersey, so it would be an upset if he winds up anywhere else. With this shortened preseason, and the need of players and teams to move quickly, we’ll probably see both Paul and Howard moved by Monday. It’s not that hard.

Formerly KS and CS

I don't mind Howard going to NewJersey...

but i think they could decide to keep Nene as a PF and Howard as center and with Deron, it would be a very good team to challenge both Newyork and Miami

Importantly keeps Howard away from western conference

Ya, I feel like the nets have more to offer than dallas or LA

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
