Golden Nuggets: NBA free agency officially opens today!
Welcome to the official opening of the NBA free agency period my fellow Stiffs! In less than four-hours, 12 p.m. MTN, players will be allowed to sign contracts with NBA teams. We shall find out soon the fates of Arron Afflalo, Nene, Gary Forbes, and many others. And how about that Lakers, Hornets, and Rockets trade that was cancelled late last night? Get ready for a wild ride!
Lots of people seem worried about the precedent set last night by the NBA when the league owners put pressure on David Stern to cancel the trade that would have sent Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers. Well, the only way the league was really able to do such a thing is because the 29 owners are in control of the New Orleans Hornets at the moment.
But is that the only way this happened? All trades must be reviewed by the league office, so could more trades in the future be blocked? Here is my problem with the league blocking this particular trade:
- The Hornets did a good job making the Lakers give up their second and third leading scorers; who also double as 2/3 of the team's seven footer squad. This trade made the Lakers a much different team and the Lakers gave up actual players to do the deal.
- The Hornets got some good value in return in Lamar Odom and then shipping Pau Gasol to the Rockets in exchange for Goran Dragic, Kevin Martin, Luis Scola and at least one first round pick (the Knicks 2012 pick). NOLA could have easily flipped Odom and Scola for more assets this season as both guys have tons of value for a team in contention of the title.
- Does the league just want to see Chris Paul sign with the Lakers, Knicks, or some other market in the off-season without the Hornets getting any value for him? If that is the case, they need to contract the team in NOLA ASAP as they will not survive losing CP3 for nothing.
Strange times.
Lost in the shuffle are two things.
- Dwight Howard has asked to be traded to the New Jersey Nets; in exchange the Nets will send their poo-poo platter offer to the Magic.
- FREE AGENCY OPENS IN LESS THAN FOUR HOURS!!!!

Seemed like a very fair trade for NO to me. Very bad trade for the rest of the NBA if the Lakers were also able to set up a Dwight Howard trade, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. The Chris Paul situation is different than the previous one’s because the NO franchise has major problems just staying in business. They are never going to be able to survive in that location.

I agree with this other
…it was a pretty fair trade. Certainly as “fair” as the Melo deal, especially with the picks.
Much worse
Than the Melo trade because there was no young talent coming back. I am certain NOLA could do better. Getting good players like Gasol, Odom, Scola, etc. doesn’t help them much because they are not going to make them contendors. And while they could flip them, Demps had gone ahead and flipped the best piece, Gasol, for more older players and crappy draft picks.
Brandon Roy retiring
obviously due to his knees. Could have been an all time great player.

Other than supposed interest...
There’s been precious little news about Nene’s intentions.
Tell me that’s a very good thing, please?
Well, with the Rockets not landing Pau Gasol, the Rockets pitch to Nene has drastically changed. So that may help the Nuggets cause. … that is if Nene actually was considering going there.

To me, it is good news
…means Nuggets are heavily involved because they never say anything.
We will know soon
Maybe the Nuggets are just following the no handshake role the NBA said last week. At least publicly.
Crazy day it will be. Agents, players, lawyers.. oh my!
nene will probably wait to sign
to see if the gasol trade is pushed back through? i can’t imagine he goes to the rockets if it isn’t, but i think it’s probable if it is approved.

I just hate to see how he has been bounced around in the last 1/2 year. I hope he ends up winning a championship this year.
Not in Miami please
I would truly hate to see him in Miami if he is amnestied. He’s still got some gas in the tank, hopefully somebody would claim him. He could be a backup 2 in Denver.

NBA Just stalling..
I think the NBA was just stalling Paul so the Lakers wouldn’t get both Howard and Paul. Once Howard goes to the Nets.. Paul to the Lakers. They world will stop screaming and the NBA super powers will be set..
And the Nugget underdog role will be reaffirmed. Just how big of an underdog is determined by Nene and AAA at this point.
Interesting theory
Meanwhile, Knicks killed any last chance of going after Paul by signing Chandler. I’m sure they figured Paul to LA was a done deal.

Interesting
idea, dont now if it was worth it to the NBA to do this much damage to its reputation just to slow things down.
Honestly, id rather face the lakers with paul, bynum, and kobe, than with kobe, bynum, gasol, and odom

This is just different with the NBA owning the team...
… if Joe Schmo owned the Hornets and wanted to do this, this trade would be out of control.
Maya: "What are your first impressions of Denver?"
Mozgov: "I must break you..."
then that should have been clear long ago
that owners would have a say in hornets transactions. this whole situation is fucked up.
Agreed Mancar
You lose a very good big AND a productive big for a great guard, why would lakers do that?
You can start a team with Gasol and Odom, put a star around them (like Kobe) and you got yourself a contender. What are the Lakers thinking and why would the NBA object.
The Hornets made out like bandits in this deal.
I’m pretty confused. The trade in which the Lakers landed Gasol should have been vetoed. The one last night? Notsomuch. Stern is a weird crook.
We see a wonderful sun-soaked city nestled at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Enos sees nickels and dimes.
NBA didn't own the Grizzlies
Each one of the NBA owners pitched in to buy the Hornets, so they all feel they have a say, even thought Demps is supposed to have power. Stern screwed Demps.
FYI – the Girzzlies trade actually worked out okay for both teams, so you never can tell.
No, the Grizzlies still got hosed

Lakers were one piece away
The Grizzlies weren’t going anywhere and now have a competitive team with a Gasol on the rise (assuming they resign him). It wasn’t as one sided as it once looked.
That's my point
…so the league shouldn’t veto a trade unless it is absolutely crazy.
Titles are now how you judge trades.
The reality is that Memphis wasn’t anywhere close to winning a title with Pau Gasol.

Agree or disagree, it brings the NBA into disrepute. It just looks bad from all angles.

Not quite that simple
The point is the lockout solved none of the problems is professed to be about: crazy player movement, collusion, out-of-control salaries, owners being stupid with money, small market teams being bamboozled by big ones.
The Paul trade and the tampering stuff just shows that the NBA has a ton of lingering problems. A ton. As a fan of basketball, it kills me that the pro league is such a shit show. And Stern is the man in charge and, ultimately, the responsible party. He best be done by the end of this season.

The league is run by Stern and consists of the 30 team owners
But in this case the league only has 29 owners, since team #30, New Orleans, is owned by the other 29 teams. So they do have VETO power.
But I don't understand why the own the Hornets.

The 29 owners all own a stake in the Hornets
And since they want to recoup their investment, they know they need to get good value for Paul if they are going to make the Hornets an appealing team for some buyer somewhere.
I don’t think this was motivated by Laker hate and fear of Howard ended up there — though that was likely part of it — but a legit concern that the trade really wasn’t that good, long term, for the Hornets.
"No one likes a beggar slightly overdressed"
I agree
I know there is a bunch of so called experts on BSPN saying that this trade was good for the Hornets, but I disagree to a large extent. Even though CP3 is leaving, and they may get nothing in return, so the thought is get something for him, there is still time. Just as we learned with Melo last year, sometimes the offers get better with time.
NO was taking back an awful lot of salary in this deal.
Lakers trade = Not the best trade they could've gotten imo.
Heck, I’d prefer CP3 to the Clippers for Kaman and Minnesota’s 1st Rounder. And if they can get the Clippers 1st rounder as well, hell, that’s a steal.

Denver needs a backup wingman. He’s more of a PF type than a scoring PG/SG, but I won’t quibble. There is a need for a tough as nails defender with K-Mart on Chinese vacation.
I just fear this creates a logjam at PF with Nene and Faried.
Of course, we could just slide Nene over to center…
"No one likes a beggar slightly overdressed"
We could potentially get Mbah a Moute actually.
Forgot they just signed Dunleavy yesterday. Checked out an article on Brew Hoop from, got this quote:
While there have been strong indications that the Bucks would like to re-sign Luc Mbah a Moute and keep former second round picks Darington Hobson and Jon Leuer, Milwaukee also remains in need of a backup center and was short on wing shooters just a day before camp and free agency were set to open on Friday. Dunleavy fills the latter hole and figures to challenge Carlos Delfino for the starting small forward position, and all at a rather reasonable, low-risk price of $7.5 million over two years. He also provides cover in the event that Luc Mbah a Moute signs an offer sheet outside of the Bucks’ comfort zone. I won’t go so far as to say the Dunleavy move precludes Luc’s return, but it certainly doesn’t help.

As recently as a couple of days ago, Howard was apparently fairly open to staying in Orlando. He meets with the owner of the Nets, then suddenly demands a trade to the Nets. That’s the definition of tampering. Why should that be allowed?

*sigh*
But…. Two weeks ago I was totally resigned to the Nuggets without Nene.
I can handle it if he leaves. Just have no idea where the front office is going to spend all that money. They are going to have to overpay someone. And there just isn’t much out there that I like, alas.
At least when it comes to big name players who could eat up the requisite salary.
"No one likes a beggar slightly overdressed"
Maybe after all this, Howard and Paul will say screw it...
…we’re going to Denver. Nice and quiet, no problems, just want to win.
Honestly, I won't be that sad if we lose Nene
He’s a good guy and the best FA center in the league (this year), but I’m sick of his mentality after 8 years here.
If he goes, the Nuggets have got to accept the writing on the wall for this season, resign Afflalo, amnesty Harrington, and go 12-54 for the 2012 draft.

Steve Kyler: If nets sign Nene with cap space, they would have no room to take on Hedo Turkoglu’s deal as Nets offer is reported. 4 minutes ago
Ya
That is what I was thinking. How can NJ trade for DHoward if they sign Nene. Plus…with the tampering charges filed against NJ, do we really honestly think Orlando and NJ do business with one another now??
Nene and Howard aren't going to be on the same team
No way.
"No one likes a beggar slightly overdressed"
Bring on the Lawson/Afflalo/Faried/Gallinari/Mozgov lineup
Backing up:
Miller
Amnestied Billups (lol) (but really Denver needs another SG in a bad way)
Hamilton
Andersen
Koufus
10 wins
gives us better position for the draft lottery.
"No one likes a beggar slightly overdressed"
I don't disagree
but Denver will not be that bad, even if they lose Nene.
We have to sign someone regardless to get to the cap floor, and even with the talent we have, we will be an OK team
Ok, 15 games
Look at that line up again. It is either inexperienced or washed up,with the exception of AAA, Ty and Gallo. Nene and a very good 6th man make all the difference.
15 wins this year equates to about 20 normally
so I guess it is possible they are that bad. I just don’t see it. Even with the team they currently have signed, our back court is still amazing with Ty, Miller, and AAA. Guard play goes a long way to success in this league. We have a good player in Gallo who could become even better this year, we have Harrington who can still score, we have two 7 footers plus Bird, and we have two rookies who could have an impact.
Plus, if Nene goes, we have to sign others just to get to the cap floor. So there will be other talent plus the talent I listed above. I still think the minimum this team wins this year is 30. .500 this year is 33 wins
Anthony Davis
would be a great Nene replacement
Good?
If so, I’m fine with that, short season with an amazing 2012 draft class so the Nuggets get a high pick with plenty of space.
But on the flipside people don’t seem to get how much weaker the West is. Melo’s gone. Yao’s gone. Lakers are getting old but still the favorites. Roy is retiring. Deron is gone.
Other than the Lakers and OKC, who is considered a force in the West?
by Colin Neilson on Dec 9, 2011 11:16 AM MST up reply actions
Dallas and San Antonio
maybe not forces in the west, but playoff locks for sure.
So lets assume Denver brings back Afflalo
We need a backup SG desperately. I know Thaddeus Young and Luc Mbah-a-Moute has been brought up. Are those our targets?
Besides...
we all know that Karl will play Ty and Miller at the same time, so a 3 guard rotation of AAA, Ty, and Miller will tie (TY) up the majority of the 96 guard minutes.
Concerning Nene...
NetsDaily doesn’t believe a word of this rumor.
They claim Bondy get’s his info from them, haha.
I still think
Nene will be back. Colorado is home, he loves his teammates, him and Karl have a bond, should I go on? I would be shocked if he felt that disrespected that he decides to sign elsewhere.
I hope you are right junkie
He still has a chance to play with a good C in Lopez and PG in Williams, but Denver is not chopped liver either.
I really want the Paul trade to go through, D12 to go to NJ and Nene to sign in Denver. It would be perfect for Denver.
Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'
Houston, Indiana, and GS
Dont make any sense at all for Nene, but NJ does. But in order to get D12, they can’t chase Nene because they need to take the Turk’s contract.
So our hope is ESPN doesn’t rule it tampering like when Dolan and Amare recruited Melo. Why did no one talk about that tampering???
Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'
I meant NBA over ESPN lol.
Watching too much ESPN right now and hearing too many Laker sympathizers, it’s sickening.
Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

picking up Chauncey is the worst idea ever
love the guy, but he is incompatible with this team. you think the reason we started playing better as a team was just cause we lost melo? no it’s cause we lost both of them. the offense can actually move the ball now and andre miller will fit in well. he’s a very underrated pg.
also there's no questions that this is lawson's team now
miller is not the type of guy to take over like chauncey would

I asked this late last night on the last thread
What exactly does NJ have to offer for Dwight? Dwill’s not going anywhere, Lopez isn’t near enough, and all other assets were used to get Dwill. I don’t see Dwight going there-Orlando can do much better. Depending on how this Paul thing shakes out, I still think he goes to LA.
by Rainbow skyline on Dec 9, 2011 11:26 AM MST reply actions
The biggest things they offer are
1. Brook Lopez
2. The ability to take back Hedo’s terrible contract
I am sure NJ will throw in some other assets, future picks (whatever they can come up with), but taking on Hedo’s contract is huge for giving Orlando future flexibility.
Pooh
I got to go to work at a job that doesn’t allow me to sit behind a computer.
Can’t wait to catch up on all the shit that goes down in the next six hours or so.
Have a feeling that Ujiri is going to come up with some sort of crazy blockbuster deal and half of the rumors will prove to be just that. Most of the wheeling and dealing is being done in the quiet, away from leaks and Twitter. That’s how Stan and Ujiri operate.
Cheers.

Offical statement on the Paul fiasco
This just released from the NBA league office.
In response to inquiries, NBA Commissioner David Stern released the following statement:
Since the NBA purchased the New Orleans Hornets, final responsibility for significant management decisions lies with the Commissioner’s Office in consultation with team chairman Jac Sperling. All decisions are made on the basis of what is in the best interests of the Hornets. In the case of the trade proposal that was made to the Hornets for Chris Paul, we decided, free from the influence of other NBA owners, that the team was better served with Chris in a Hornets uniform than by the outcome of the terms of that trade."
WOW
Most would disagree, and that explanation will not sit well with anyone. We haven’t heard the last of this.
Then why give Demps any power at all?
They knew he was wheeling and dealing in a tight window. WTF?
wow is right

15 million a year.
One thing that we underestimate is the pride factor. I don’t think Josh and Co. want to trade Melo, and less then a year later get stuck in the lottery. They want a good product and, as long as there is cap room, they will pay for it.

However Posting and Toasting is reporting
Update: Howard Beck: “Tyson Chandler deal will be done today, w/Billups amnestied, according to source. Not clear where Turiaf going yet, but he’ll be traded.”Also:
Update: Beck again: Knicks have about 5 scenarios in play for trading Turiaf to clear more cap room for Tyson Chandler. One of them gets done today, I’m told.
Update: ESPN’s Tim McMahon: Tyson Chandler confirms on ESPN 103.3’s Ben and Skin Show that he’s agreed with the Knicks. NO sign-and-trade with the Mavs.

You kidding?
He’s young, got tons of upside, can average 20 ppg, and the only real problem is that that backcourt is crowded. Get rid of Salmons and give the minutes to Thornton and this is a beautiful contract, worth every penny (barring injury or whatnot).

Jimmer probably won't be ready
To start as a rookie. Thornton produced, albeit on a terrible team still.
Split the minutes among the 3 of them?
Either way Jimmer probably doesn’t start yet. Btw, in a league where Rip Hamilton makes $12mil this year, Ben Gordon makes $11 mil, Jason Terry makes $11, and Al Harrington eats burgers, this is a perfectly fine deal.

Mark cuban on letting Chandler and Butler Walk
The reality is that in the new system, cap room will have far more value than it had in the past. I realize that everyone is all freaked out about how and where free agents and future free agents are going, but it’s not just about getting one guy.
We are not saving cap room in hope of that one super special free agent being there. It’s about being in the position to improve every year and possibly add some significant, younger players next year and in future years.
What I don’t think people understand is that once a team hits the tax level the ability to improve our team is reduced dramatically. In addition, your ability to make trades is reduced. So basically, if we made the move to keep everyone together with five-year deals, the team we have today is going to be the team we have for the next five years. If we were a young team it would be one thing. But we are not a young team.
In the past, it was different. If we had a problem, I could fix any mistake by having Donnie find a trade and just taking on more money. … That trick doesn’t work any more for teams over the tax. So we have to change our approach.
The hard cap on luxury teams isn’t getting enough attention. Cuban understands it.

In the midst of fans exploding on Twitter in anger,
I love that the NBA blogosphere has got the complete opposite opinions, and has it right.
RT @ticktock6 I would kill to have been able to sign Marcus Thornton for 8 million. Love him. So high on him.
RT @tomhaberstroh Go compare Marcus Thornton’s numbers in Sacramento to Eric Gordon’s last season. Virtually identical. Good value for Kings.
RT @MikePradaSBN Thornton averaged 22 a game down the stretch. It’s a fair deal. He’s better than (Nick) Young. But do the #Wizards agree?
RT @HPbasketball: GREAT move by the Kings, and Thornton will be worth it. Just have to ditch Salmons.
RT @talkhoops Great contract. Wow. RT @Chris_Broussard: Marcus Thornton signed with Sac Kings for $40 million over five years, source says
"J.R. SMITH! WITH NO REGARD FOR COMMON SENSE!" - Future Kevin Harlan Quote
"They're two-deep at the crazy position!" - Kenny "The Jet" Smith.
Fairly long, but SI's take.
Here’s an interesting one: The Kings, with Jimmer Fredette, Tyreke Evans and John Salmons already on hand in the back court, have decided to make re-sign Marcus Thornton to a five-year, $40 million deal, according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard. That’s a big contract, even for a team flush with cap space both this season and next, with lots of room to cover before it hits the minimum floor. But Thornton can score, and he loves to shoot. He averaged better than 21 per game once New Orleans, always concerned about Thornton’s tendency to get himself out of position on defense, flipped him to the Kings for Carl Landry last season. He has been an above-average shooter from deep, and he showed after the trade last season that he toss some smart passes out of the pick-and-roll if need be.
Even at this price, Thornton is a young, attractive asset, the kind of player a small-market club is wise to lock up early. His presence gives the Kings all sorts of back-court versatility, allowing Fredette to roam off the ball if he prefers and Tyreke Evans to experiment at small forward. Having guys who can play with the second unit and create their own shot is always good.
The defensive issues are real, but Thornton is young, and he’ll improve with time. The Kings will have decisions to make going forward as other young players–Evans, J.J. Hickson, Jason Thompson, etc.–come off rookie deals, and having Thornton locked up brings some stability to things. Also: Spending $8 million on a 24-year-old means there is $8 million less around to spend on over-the-hill veterans just to meet the minimum salary floor. All in all, a good, strong move by the Kings.

By Ian O’Connor
ESPNNewYork.com
Chauncey Billups, reportedly scheduled to be fired by the New York Knicks to clear salary-cap room for Tyson Chandler, will consider retiring from the NBA if he is claimed off waivers by a team he deems undesirable, according to his agent
I would too
Cash it, F this system that keeps shipping him around
The article goes on to quote his agent Andy Miller
“But I wouldn’t be surprised if Chauncey retired rather than play for a team he wouldn’t want to play for,” said Andy Miller, agent for the 35-year-old point guard. “He doesn’t need the money, his kids are getting to an age where he wants to be an active participant, and he doesn’t need the frustration and instability he’s constantly dealing with. So he may choose not to play.”
Perhaps he could refuse to play for any team except a contender (or Denver..I kid)
Other teams would be scared off and he would fall to his preferred teams…Miami anyone? I’m sure he would love to go to Miami and stick it to Melo.
Miami doesn't get to bid on the waivers

Absolutely no one, at all wants Ronney Turiaf. Ny is saying you can have him for free and still no interest what so ever. If they can’t move him, chandler can’t sign. They can’t even offer up a 1st round pick for someone to take him off their hands, because they don’t have anything till 2017.
Someone will....
but the knicks will have to sweeten the deal with laundry fields or iman shumpert, or tony douglas. The roster bleed will have to continue.
we need to be all over this
if we could get them to include shumpert or fields, then not only do we garauntee new york has no depth, but also no future.
who cares
guy is severely overrated. Tell me what he has done that makes him the centerpiece to a dynasty. He had a good run with Dallas and New Orleans, where was he in between that- being shuffled around because of injury and being a bum. i don’t see how this is “helping” them.
Them getting Chandler would be great for us!!
They think they have their big 3, but 2/3 are injury prone and without a PG it would be a total shitshow making that 2014 pick for the Nuggets amazing.
We should facilitate that Ronny Turiaf deal just for that sake, of course save that money for Nene right now, but if not jump on that deal immediately.

Bringing him back just means drama and inhibiting Ty’s growth.

Looks like he is a 6'6" PG who played at UTEP
Could be our Forbes replacement.
I have a feeling Ujiri knows what he is doing with undrafted guys a la Gary Forbes last year.
Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'
Julyan Stone is an awesome pick up
All-time leader in assists at UTEP (keep in mind Tim Hardaway went there). Hard-nosed defender. Finally when we play 2 pgs at once, one will at least be 6’6
the guy can't shoot for a lick though, but I'm still interested in seeing what he can do
and it’s better to try something new then go back to AC imho.
Who the hell is that guy???
Someone give me info please.

from NBADraft.net
Strengths: Extremely versatile guard … Blessed with the natural ability to play PG and size to play three different positions … Strong athleticism with very good leaping ability and explosiveness … Smooth, quick first step … Good penetrator that spends a lot of time in the paint … Has become very efficient over his four years at UTEP, finishing his last season at 53% … Tall for a point guard with very long arms … Excellent court vision … Sees over the defense and doesn’t miss open teammates … Gets them the ball in a position where they can score easily … Knows how to feed post players … Makes good decisions with the ball in transition … Trusts his teammates and has their trust as well … Doesn’t turn the ball over often … Plays hard and hustles everywhere on the floor … Averaged 7.5 rebounds in his senior season despite playing the point guard position … Has the toughness, lateral quickness and long arms to be a blanket on defense … Has the potential to defend 1s, 2s and 3s at the next level …
Weaknesses: Non-existent scoring ability … Despite playing 36.5 minutes per game in the fairly weak Conference USA, he only averaged 8.5 points per game … Very poor shooter … Lacks any range on his jump shot … Opponents will have no respect for his shooting ability and play off him, which will make him an easy player to defend, and inhibit his playmaking abilities … Solid finishing ability around the rim, but won’t get as many opportunities there at the next level … Poor free-throw shooter at 56% … Had four years to improve his shooting ability, yet never managed to do so …
Overall: Stone is a very interesting prospect, but won’t have an easy path to the NBA … PGs over 6’4 can be counted on one hand and seem to becoming obsolete … He would be an ideal role-player at the next level if he could become a respectable shooter and maybe take advantage of his size by taking smaller defenders into the post … His versatility may get his name called in the second round of this year’s draft, but he needs to patch up some of the major holes in his game if he wants to play in the NBA any time soon

Let's Try to Keep Our Eye on the Prize(s)
So far we’re still in the running for
- Nene
- Afflalo
- Luc Richard Mbah a Moute
Phew, I thought maybe Moute had gotten away.
We would still need a wing scorer on the bench
Are we going to wait for Chandler, or maybe go after Rip Hamilton?
Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'
Damn Nene
I imagine the only reason Denver hasn’t brought in another decent free agent, is that Nene hasn’t made his decision yet. Hopefully, we don’t have to wait for a stupid television special.
I want Mbah a Moute.
That would be nice to Mbah a Moute
We would actually be too big at that point and would have to trade a big for a wing player I am guessing.
Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'
But I guess you can never have enough wings
If we had JR we would have an amazing backcourt in AAA/Ty/ Miller/JR/ Hamilton
And a great/ young frontcourt in Moz/Nene/Gallo/ Koufus/ Bird/ Mbuah a Moute/ Faried/ Harrington (Maybe Harrington could play 3?) .
Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'
Meant to say enough bigs...ugh too tired of this nonsense right now

NBA is being retarded odom, martin, and scola would net plenty of stuff in further trades
As Hornets restart trade talks, directive from NBA is to get better, younger package, to ensure long-term success, I’m told.
Thats what I said
The Lakers may give up less now and that would make me really irate.
Hopefully they now give up Odom, Bynum, and Gasol. Or at least take on a really bad conrtact and give up draft picks. Do something to make it worse on the Lakers…please.

From what I've read
the other owners want LA to take on more salary. In the original deal, the lakers got the best player in the deal and dumped salary. They want the hornets to dump salary on the lakers.

I'm okay whatever happens
Just hope we don’t overpay for anyone to be honest. I like Afflalo a lot, but if some teams proposes some crazy offer, and we lose him then we’ll just have to play someone else a lot of minutes.
Dunno who to be honest tho.
I'm totally OK with overpaying for Nene
$15 million a year for 5 years might seem like a lot for some people here. But… The fact is, he’s the piece to the puzzle here. And Nene seems like the sort who will man up and be the man if given a contract like that.
OK with paying a bit more for AAA, too. I mean, at least these are devils we know, you know? And it isn’t like there is a shortage of cap room, either.
"No one likes a beggar slightly overdressed"
If he really wants to be here...
But I don’t think he does. Wants to get paid.. doesn’t probably care if he gets signed by New Jersey and traded later to Orlando and is in a losing situation for the next four years either.
jmo tho.
I’m ok overpaying on Afflalo but not if it’s $50 million over 4 years.
by nugzin2040 on Dec 9, 2011 5:56 PM MST up reply actions 1 recs
If Nene leaves to Jersey
we need to seriously consider just trading for Chauncey and then buying out his contract to get us to the cap floor. It be the smartest move for us, keeps us from getting stuck with a terrible contact and keeps us with cap space for next year. Plus it couldn’t hurt doing right by Chauncey
has he?
all there has been so far is reports right? guess it would be better if he was amnestied then we could just put a bid in for him for the difference between the cap floor and Afflalo’s salary. i imagine we would still be able to buy him out, i was just reading over on round ball mining company that amnestied players can be traded 30 days after they are awarded to a team
Now That I Think About It
This could be it, right here, right now. If the Nuggets manage to lose both
Nene and Afflalo then they’d very likely be in line for a Top Three pick in the draft.
Based on a consensus of the Top Three draft sites they would be:
- Anthony Davis PF 6-10 220 Fr. Kentucky
- Andre Drummond C 6-10 279 Fr UConn
- Harrison Barnes SF 6-8 223 So No. Carolina
Who should we pick?
Davis or Drummond
I like Gallo as our future 3. A lot more uncertain about where we are at PF and C. I like Davis a lot.
I'd take Barnes for sure.
Highest potential for superstardom, Drummond and Davis will be good, but how many Centers are really superstars? Dwight, Oden could’ve been, and really the next chance is maybe DeMarcus Cousins?
(I’m a pretty big college bball fan, I was at that game that UNLV upset #1 North Carolina, was craaazy, and worth every cent even if I’m not a fan of either team).
HOWEVER, I’d much prefer us to get 2 or 3 lottery picks than the top pick. If we can pick up guys like Kidd-Gilchrist, Rivers, Teague, Miller, Henson, Lamb, etc., there’s a HIGH chance we get at least one superstar out of them. The downside is that the only real big men with potential will be going in the top 6, (Drummond, Davis, Sullinger, Jones) but I’m sure we can find some talent to shore up our front line.
Just PLEASE, for the love of everything, no one advocate for drafting Tyler Zeller. I might cry.
"J.R. SMITH! WITH NO REGARD FOR COMMON SENSE!" - Future Kevin Harlan Quote
"They're two-deep at the crazy position!" - Kenny "The Jet" Smith.
Barnes will be a really good, perhaps perfect pairing with Lawson.
If we think Moz and friends are gonna be good enough we should go for Barnes. If we need more bigs then I’d go for Davis.

i feel like the kid being picked last on the playground lol…. ima make somebody regret they did that lol

I suspect that everybody respects his game but he doesn’t inspire, sort of the luxury everybody would love to have. Plus you always have to wonder if he’ll be as good in your system. Exhibit A is Wilson Chandler and Felton who played better for the Knicks.

Here's an update/correction from Sactown
Marcus Thorton will indeed remain with the Sacramento Kings, but according to Sam Amick of SI.com the deal will be for $33 million over four years. ESPN has previously inaccurately reported that the deal would be for five years, $40 million.
Some serious secret intrigue also from Sactown
n case you’ve missed the discussion in the comment threads or on Twitter, Grant Napear has said on today’s show on 1140 The Fan that the Kings are talking about big-name player fans will be excited about, with news of a deal possibly coming on Saturday. It’s not an All-Star level player, but Napear has been adamant that it’s a “big name” and that it’s not a guard.
maybe it's nene
unless it’s DeAndre Jordan, I can’t imagine it being anyone but Nene.
Then who then?
There’s not anyone left that’s a big name is there?
They have a lot of young talent
Could see it be someone like Odom, if it’s a trade and the NOL/LAL/HOU trade goes thru

I’m of the opinion that the Kings have a legit roster. Bottom line, Kings draft picks won’t be worth much for a looong time.

There just isn’t that many teams with cap space or likely to be overly aggressive in pursuing our Nuggets. I’m wondering if the Nets even know what they want to do?

Nene decision pending....
Woj updates the scene: mostly a change of “did” from “will”
The New Jersey Nets made a four-year, $60 million-$65 million contract offer to free-agent center Nene, aggressively pushing to steal him away from the Denver Nuggets, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.
Nets general manager Billy King was presented the offer to Nene’s agent Dan Fegan on Friday. Nene could make a decision as soon as Friday night.
At that price
$15-16 million/year, just let him go.

Story to come on SI.com, but Orlando CEO Alex Martins disputes the claim of Dwight Howard’s agent that permission was given to talk to teams
Stanger and stranger
Magic GM Otis Smith confirmed to ESPN the Magazine on Friday night that he granted permission to Fegan to speak to the Nets about a deal involving Howard.
Hmm..Thought of a very off the wall play for this season
There is a rumbling that Howard is weighing interest from Chi, NJ, Washigton, Utah, and Denver. More then sure it’s leveraging us…but dare to dream.
If you could swap Howard for something like Lawson, Chandler rights, Hamilton, Mozgov, 1st round pick this year and 2014 with the NYK pick there.
You put in a claim on Billups and resign Nene. You could have that team with amnestying only Harrington.
There is one and a million shot. At this point I have no clue who the Nugs will spend there money on if Nene is gone. BTW David West S&T to Celtics.
Howard is going to a big market

I agree
But it’s more fun to think of how to build a championship team. A lot harder without a special team.
I love Lawson but it’s a matter of building a trade propsal you either use Gallo or Lawson. Lawson more easily replaceable.
The team you'd put together...
Billups/Miller
Afflalo/Forbes
Gallo/Hamilton
Nene/Far
Howard/Anderson/Koufus
That would be if you can hold on to Hamilton…Honestly my perfect makeup would be to add JR in that spot lol.
And now back to reality.

So Nene is aware he is just a pawn in NJ's scheme?

Can We
Sign Howard and trade him and the rights to Wilson Chandler to NJ for a resigned Nene and the rights to Turkeloo (sp?) from Orlando and pick from Orlando or NJ. Than we amnesty Turkaloo?
Jussayin’ that I guarantee we will be working every angle to get picks by using all of our cap space.

Seriously
The regular season starts in 16 days! Better sign our boys (AAA, Chauncey and Nene) and get after it!
Doesn't sound like Nene is grappling over a decision to stay with the Nuggets
If as suggested they are able to re-agree on the Chris Paul trade on Saturday
then Houston can match the offer by the Nets for Nene.
Sounds like his decision is which team he’s moving to.
I think we should offer all available Cap space after we sign Nene and AAA
To Chauncey to return on a one year deal. It would make our entire city happy! Make Chauncey come home or retire. Would show class by the nuggets. Trade al and Andre for any pick to anyone.
One day its Nene is staying, the next he is going to Jersey
I guess it is like Roulette and I think his choices are NJ, Houston, and Denver. If he is seriously considering Houston, I think Nene deserves to go there and suck it out with the Llama and no backcourt.
Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'
So it's just not looking very good for our team
Update from Woj:
The Nets have a chance to close on a four-year, $60 million-plus deal for Denver Nuggets free-agent center Nene this weekend, but are working relentlessly to make a deal with Orlando for Howard, league sources said. Howard has been waffling between wanting a deal to the Lakers and Hollywood, and wanting to join point guard Deron Williams with the Nets and be the cornerstone of the franchise’s move to a new Brooklyn arena in 2012-13, sources told Y! Sports.
Btw Nene is getting a ton of respect from the Nets who are telling him

If nene is really the backup plan if Howard decides to go to La, then we’re out of it as far as i’m concerned. i think it means we aren’t willing to give him the 15mill, that the nets are. Of course, I could be wrong, but that’s just my hunch right now.

But since it’s playing out right now… It’s pretty interesting how much we’re hearing, via all kinds of routes, sourced and unsourced, from other teams’ GMs and the moves they’re attempting. Yet we hear next to nothing from Masai Ujiri and the Nuggets.

They can get the both when they amnesty “Mehta World Peace” and give a combination of picks.
Stern can get his cash from Jerry Bus and head off into the sunset
Watch it happen boys
They can amnesty Meta
But they have no cap flexibility. That happens when Kobe is making over 20 million a year. I could see them being forced to take back Ariza and amnestying Meta. But it’s going to be Lakers picks + Bynum for Howard. Not sure I’d be taking that deal if I was Orlando.

Nice work
You have captured a much older " Birdman"!
Lakers will score big with the proposed trade as they lose lot of salary and can easily
have more cap space to swing a trade with Orlando Magic for Howard and taking the contract of Hedo…
I wish Howard goes to Nets.. if he goes to Lakers (with / without chris paul), We can easily crown them the champions next year..
I am not sure why Lakers does not make a play for Howard and then pick up the amnestied Billups? they may not need Paul in that case…
quick question
When a team under salary cap picks up a amnestied player, what salary counts toward amnesty?
If the player like Billups retire, do the team still pay Billups his salary (even if he retires)? becoz for teams that can’t make the salary cap floor, it is a perfect world to pick up Billups or someone like him to reach the floor?
Everything is removed from the original team
The amount you bid would count towards your cap if you pick them up.
So If Billups was due 15 mil is amnestied 0 cap hit on Knicks. They pay him 15 mil.
If a team bids on his and wins him for say 4 million. New team gets 4 million cap hit and pays him 4 million. NYK have 0 cap hit but pay him 11 million.
and what if the player retires as Billups threatens
Do the bidding team still get a cap hit and has to pay the bidding amount?
or bidding team only gets a cap hit, but don’t have to pay him (as he has retired)
or bidding team do not get cap hit and don’t have to pay him?

If we're willing to give Nene 15, then lets throw that money at Marc Gasol
I know memphis says they will match, but they are in salary chaos. You don’t max gay and randolph. Give Conley a bloated contracted, and plenty of other sizeable contracts such as OJ and Toney allen, and come out of this ok.
Problem with Gasol is Mozgov
You can play Nene at 4 next to Moz. But Gasol and Moz are essentially the same guy. Big stiff centers with little offense. Can’t play them at the same time.

Most Important Question of the Day
It appears that all the hub-bub over the CP3 trade AND Magic tampering threats has calmed down. IF Orlando decides to go ahead and deal now, then the Nets will be hard charging and so would likely put Nene’s offer on ice
at least temporarily.
Dallas, one of three teams in pursuit, with permission, on Howard, has been helped by getting a large trade exception from the Chandler signing.
so what is the question?
Formerly KS and CS
by ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown on Dec 10, 2011 10:45 AM MST up reply actions
Howard is out of there
it is just a question of when. It sounds like he wants New Jersey, so it would be an upset if he winds up anywhere else. With this shortened preseason, and the need of players and teams to move quickly, we’ll probably see both Paul and Howard moved by Monday. It’s not that hard.
Formerly KS and CS

I don't mind Howard going to NewJersey...
but i think they could decide to keep Nene as a PF and Howard as center and with Deron, it would be a very good team to challenge both Newyork and Miami
Importantly keeps Howard away from western conference
I don't think they have the cap room
to get Nene for the offers that are rumored and Howard.

Ya, I feel like the nets have more to offer than dallas or LA
if they did file tampering against the nets, the nets would lose draft picks, and then wouldn’t be able to offer those picks to Orlando #doubleedgedsword.
I like the move on its own, but you have to wonder if
Knowing they might/would likely lose Nene, that this became a higher priority.

but the reports were that they wanted NO to be younger, and LA to take on salary.

This is Good
I was hoping this would come together. Last thing I wanted was for them to switch on a dime and pursue Howard.
I agree.. They could have been great going after Howard
but they seem to have freed up cap space with this trade.. so there is still a chance they could go after Howard…
If I were a Laker fan, I would go after Howard and then pick Billups to shore up your point guard position…
the old trade was interesting that both Houston and Lakers gave up lot of salary and
unless the NewOrleans GM had trades in place for Odom / Scola, which reduces their salary and brings in young talent

Just filed to ESPN w/@Chris_Broussard: New trade framework of original three-team CP3 deal has been submitted to league office for approval
And This...
BQRMagic Evan Dunlap
Acquiring Paul means the Lakers wouldn’t have cap space to sign Dwight outright as a free agent, so he wouldn’t have leverage to force trade
Concerning the trade
ESPNSteinLine Marc Stein
Details of specific changes made to original 3-team framework not immediately known but NBA insisting Hornets get more youth/picks this time
looks like
J HAM and GK… is this the rookie treatment or what?

This is a bit interesting..... about Dallas
ESPNSteinLine Marc Stein
Mavs’ first swipe, I’m told, will be trying to do S-and-T w/Sacramento for Dalembert by using big trade exception from Tyson Chandler deal
Then add this...
ESPNSteinLine Marc Stein
Trade exception alone was never going to get Mavs back into Dwight Sweepstakes. Only chance is if Dwight chose Dallas in 2012 free agency
On the Other Hand
sam_amick Sam Amick
Nothing imminent, but it’s being discussed. I have a hard time seeing Dalembert do 1-yr deal that lets Mavs keep cap space for 2012.
RE: Luc Richard Mbah a Moute
RT @Bucksketball Bogut referred to LRMAM as the best on ball defender in the league.
RT @SHowardCooper I like DEN bid for Mbah a Moute, and not just because guys w/ multiple last names always deserve millions. Underrated difference maker on D.
RT @MSteinmetzCSN Milwaukee just paid Mike Dunleavy a little bit of money, so that probably will impact decision on whether to match for Mbah a Moute
RT @erivera7 Savvy signing by DEN with Mbah a Moute. One of the better and more versatile defenders in the NBA. Years ago, I played him in HS basketball.
RT @EricPincus If Nuggets can land Mbah a Moute – that’s a great get for a team – when it comes to youth – i like a lot (need afflalo though too)

Twitter is like my life LOL.
Especially during basketball season. I currently follow 1,200 people, which includes basically every NBA player, and a LOT of basketball bloggers and journalists. The NBA community is unbelievable.

I hope Milwaukee doesn't match
But suspect they will. That’s a reasonable, below mid-level type of deal. And he can play multiple positions, so them being loaded at sf doesn’t really matter.
Already signed Mike Dunleavy
and have Larry Sanders and Delfino at those forward positions. Chance they don’t match, but you never know.

Just waiting on you Commish
WojYahooNBA:
Says front office official on 3-way Hornets-Lakers-Rockets trade: “Everyone in the deal is waiting for guidance from the league.”
Can anyone tell me why Denver is so quiet on the Affalo front?
Sorry if its been mentioned above in the thread, its getting long and I may have over looked it. I just can’t think of a reason why we would slow play arguably the most important person we need to get in this free agent period.
Afflalo is restricted
Expect them to wait and match offers, which, apparently (based on AA’s tweets) have not been forthcoming.
reports say
Chris Paul and Dwight Howard trades are holding the SG’s up from signing becuase among the teams to have the most $ and interest in adding them are NJ and NO and with them tied up in the CP3 and D12 deals they can start the battle on the SG’s just yet. Once the Paul trade is done I think teams start the jump on SGs
