NBA Rumors: Nene back to Denver, Chandler to NY

Another crazy day in the NBA rumor mill! On the same day baseball star Albert Pujols elects to leave the St. Louis Cardinals for the Anaheim Angles ... NBA news is starting to break that center Tyson Chandler is close to agreeing to a deal with the New York Knicks (4 years, $60M) and the Houston Rockets are still searching for a center as they believe Nene is heading back to Denver to re-sign with the Nuggets.

Star-divide

While following the crazy Tyson Chandler and Chris Paul rumors today, I started seeing rumors of a three way trade between the Houston Rockets, New Orleans Hornets, and Los Angeles Lakers. The reason the Rockets are involved? Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated tweeted this out just minutes ago:

Chris Mannix
Rockets, sources say, were hot after Nene. Rival execs believe he is headed back to Denver at a max or close to max deal.

Pretty surprising news, if you can call it news. Pretty exciting rumor at this point. We could find out as early as tomorrow if Nene is truly coming back as teams are allowed to start inking deals at 12:00 MTN Friday December, 9th.

More on Nene:

Some other tidbits floating around the interwebs:

  • Woj also reporting teams that will offer restricted free agent DeAndre Jordan a contract tomorrow: Denver, Golden State, Houston, and New Orleans. Clips would have three days to match any offer.
  • Nuggets talking to Knicks about a deal for Ronny Turiaf. This would be a salary cap dump move by the Knicks as the Nuggets are so far under the cap they could take back Turiaf's $4.3 million salary.
  • Knicks close to terms with Tyson Chandler. How can the Knicks afford to bring Chandler aboard? Well, New York is over the cap, so reports are they'd have to do a sign-and-trade for Chandler and send Billups to the Dallas Mavericks or a third team. Billups is in the last year of his deal making $14.2 million. The Knicks could amnesty Billups, meaning they'd pay him $14.2M, but that wouldn't count against their cap and that would allow them to sign Chandler to a similar deal around $11-$14 million per season.
  • If Chandler goes to NY then I believe it's a two team race to get Chris Paul. Between the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks. The Lakers have been working on a three team deal that would land Pau Gasol in Houston and CP3 in L.A., and Luis Scola and Kevin Martin (K-Mart Lite) the Hornets + picks.
  • There was a tweet about Billups winding up back in Denver, but with Ty Lawson and Andre Miller on the roster, that makes little sense. I also think there would be a high enough demand by a few teams in need of a veteran point guard that Billups would land elsewhere ... maybe quite cheap since the Knicks must pay him if they amnesty him (just wont count against their salary cap.)

That would be nuts.

But it would also make a ton of sense for both.

I love the rumors. It is fun.

by Pusherman on Dec 8, 2011 12:51 PM MST up reply actions

Just to clear things up: It doesn't work that way.
Players waived via amnesty go through a waiver process where teams under the cap can bid on those players. So teams can bid on Richard Jefferson, who has three years left on his deal. If, say, the Pistons wanted him, and they bid $5 million, they are guaranteeing they’d pay $5 million per year for the remainder of his deal. The Spurs would pay the rest. But if they cut him afterwards, they eat the whole thing in one lump sum.

It’s a bit complicated, and it’s not the free agent free-for-all some people expected it to be.

People complain about the NBA, but MLB is insane.

Mark Buerle signed for 4 years and 58 million. He is an average pitcher on the downside of his career.

Not to mention Pujols.

I don't think the Hornets would take Amar'e and his shitty knees

I bet the hornets would ask for Melo. Could you imagine melo + his 3 year extension running around New Orleans with Jarret jack, Trevor Ariza, Belinelli, and Okafor…. I’d be eternally laughing at him.

by TyLawesome on Dec 8, 2011 1:38 PM MST up reply actions

Amare's knees are why it would be him

assuming New York amnestied Billups, cause they burn up there Amare insurance. Which makes me doubt they will amnesty Billups.

but what team is gonna take Amar’e’s bloated contract and injury issues.

well

he does average 25pts and 8rbs, and if you take out a fluke eye injury the guy has been pretty healthy the past five years. so i imagine someone would take him

by donwoe on Dec 8, 2011 2:06 PM MST up reply actions

Houston is delirious

I thought they had a smart GM. They seem so desperate its ridiculous. A frontcourt and Nene and Gasol without any real perimeter players (assuming KMart lite is traded) might not even make the playoffs. The only way Houston would get Nene is to sign him to the max to, so their cap would be tied up and they might not make the playoffs.
Is Morey the second coming of Isiah Thomas? It can’t be Morey, he is too smart for this, it must be the owner pressuring him. I have a message for Houston…Hey you guys won a championship already, you are far away from contending, so accept being like the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings and wait for a draft pick.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

by JR15 on Dec 8, 2011 1:30 PM MST reply actions

Morey is a genius.

Maybe this move isn’t the most perfect, but I see it as a move for the next couple of years, not this upcoming season. I mean, if their biggest problem is not having perimeter players, you could have a lot worse problems.

For one, there are plenty of perimeter plays they could get. Terrico White is a F/A now for example. They still have Kyle Lowry, Jonny Flynn, Courtney Lee, Terrence Williams, and Goran Dragic. Pair those guys up with Nene and Gasol, that’s not a bad team. Plus, they also have New York’s first round pick this year, which could be anywhere from the late lottery to early 20s. At that range players like Teague, Kabongo, Lamb, Marshall, Hairston, and possibly even Austin Rivers or Terrence Jones if they trade up a couple spots or they fall.

Let’s not overreact, Morey =/= Isiah.

I feel bad for Billups

Goodness, how crazy that Billups gets tossed around like a $2 hooker. He is an excellent PG. But then again, so has Andre Miller. It seems solid to above solid PG’s can never find a home as teams are looking to always upgrade to a superstar.

But what is shocking to me is that the Knicks would even consider rolling into the season without a legit PG. You need guards to win in this league. Chandler does them no good. Plus, isn’t D’Antoni a huge 3 point shooter guy. Who do they have now!!

Can we say it together now – introducting JR Smith to the New York Knicks.

Paul wants to go where Chandler goes vise versa… Paul could look at the trip of Nene/Chandler and Gallo and say “I want in on that” one because none of them are really ball demanding playing like both melo and amare so he can still take as many shots as he wants and he can be the main man still. It's gonna be awhile before the Nuggets get a Kings draft pick.

They’ve already traded a conditional pick to the Cavs (basically anything not in the lottery) so it’s not likely to be worth a whole lot to Denver.

I love how you guys are going nuts over Tyson Chandler to Denver via NY and Sac.

That is a trade that can’t even possibly happen. If Chandler is part of a sign-and-trade it’d be with the Dallas Mavericks, the team that owns his bird-rights.

Chandler is signing as a free agent with the Knicks, or is close to doing so.

In order for Chandler to sign in New York:

A) the Knicks have to get rid of Ronny Turiaf and Chauncey Billups. Knicks looking for teams to take on either guy.
B) Knicks have to trade Turiaf and amnesty Billups.

Masai and josh are pushing GK into a bigger lineup. I like it. Nuggets will be excellenct rebounders

by Monkfish on Dec 8, 2011 5:19 PM MST up reply actions

Hmm so

we got the Heat with Bron Bosh and Wade, the Knicks with Amare, Melo and CHandler and now the Lakers with Paul, Kobe and soon to be D12.

The Knicks are the worst by far, LA is an injury away from not having a competative team and with Kobe getting old and CP3 injury prone that’s not good for them and then Miami is just Miami.

In short, if Denver can keep Nene and AAA as well as add a piece like Thadeus Young I think the Nuggets still have a legit shot at competing with all these teams. Miami slowly is getting deeper but older at the same time. Honestly when it comes down to it I think I would take the youth and depth that the Nuggets have over what LA and New York have. Should be interesting. Lets just hope AAA and Nene resign, Moz turns into a beast, Nene can average around 20 ppg as a PF, Gallo around 20 ppg, Ty and AAA around 15 each and then our rookies actually turn into something.

by Mancar on Dec 8, 2011 5:26 PM MST reply actions

So

I love how Miami and LA build around superstars who score and play D yet New York builds a team full of chuckers all around rebounding center. Interesting and funny at the same time. LA looks like the most complete team with a star PG, C and then a scorer with Bryant yet they are the most injury prone team. Miami is the most freakish team but lack a true PG and C which is arguably the two most demanding positions to succeed and then New York has the best front line in the NBA yet has no guards or true PG and no defense.

Each team has a definate flaw and in can fail in many ways. The only reason the Heat made the playoffs is because the East is extremely weak and the teams that can compete are old a la Boston. I thought I was extremely mad at these megateams forming but when really dissecting them they all have serious flaws. Denver as constructed and barring the resigning of AAA and Nene shows has the potential to address all the serious hole the megateams have. Key word is potential thus meaning Ty, Gallo, Nene, Moz etc all have to improve from what they have been doing. The key is the megateams have their flaws but really no way to address them. Im glad to say im more optimistic than I was a week ago. This is all based on if the Nuggets indeed keep Nene and AAA.

So i hope the nuggets get billups..

Pipe Dream… Yes..

But i really want to.. Its an upgrade to the point then Miller, and i think it was andrew who said this.. but ty is like JJ Barea.. Is a decent pg, but i just dont see ty ever being more then your above average point guard.. Un like billups who is a Superstar, who gets treated like a bench warmer when it comes to trades :l. But in reality Billups would make the rebuilding process very short, plus a good pic next season and we are right back to being contenders.. IMO Billups took denver out of the frst round in 09, not Anthony.

I'm sick of it

Billups was good, but he isn’t a Denver saint or something. He was one of the reasons we sucked in his last year here because he kept chucking 3 pointers like the plague.

If you ask me, Good Riddance. I mean no hate towards him but he isn’t John Elway, not even 1/100th of Elway.

He was decent

but Lawson was so much better than him. Billups is an old man now, I don’t want an old man anchoring the point guard spot in a young team possibly coming to terms with rebuilding. Especially with his terrible contract. You just would want to hinder Lawson’s growth, you are saying he isn’t the future when he hasn’t even had a whole season being the starter. He has shown glimpses of brilliance.

Thank God Billups is gone, that old bastard.. I owe him a drink I suppose but I will never forget the first season he was here, those were good times.

A couple points

First, I think it’s kind of funny CP3 is going to the Lakers rather than Knicks because Melo expected CP3 to end up in NY with him the whole time. Second, these deals make me proud of our front office for the Melo deal. In my opinion, we got a better deal for Melo than any of these other teams are getting for their big names.

Miller is a better option because of his contract

both are old point guards who are just showing Lawson the rope. Andre’s pass first mentality will work better with mentoring Lawson anyways, and he will show Lawson how to play a half-set a lot better than Billups would, and he can teach him all about the Alley oops.

I was immensely happy with Chandler going to New York.

I was extremely pissed with CP3 going to the Lakers.

Now, I’m happy as hell that the league gave the middle finger to the Lakers essentially.

Awesome.

This was a bad trade for the hornets. What’s the point of being the 11th seed in the West with Odom, Kevin Martin and Scola? Nothing to build around there.

Even if there isn’t that much good out there otherwise, they should just rebuild now.

Okay, so the Lakers get worse.

But I also see the Hornets getting hamstrung for the next 2-3 years. Middle of the road team, MAYBE makes the playoffs, no cap space, no high lottery picks, nothing. The team would literally HAVE to tank to have any hope of rebuilding.

All while the Lakers, while a little worse off now, attract free agents around the country for years around CP3/Kobe, and eventually just CP3, in the biggest market in the league.

owners blocked it, because without cp3, the hornets lose market value

BUT, anyone who is thinking of buying this franchise should know Cp3 wants out anyway, so the value is reduced. It is moronic of the owners to think Cp3 there keeps the value up. They should just let the hornets operate normally, and hope the Gm rebuilds correctly. They don’t want to sell the franchise for less that they bailed the old owner out of, but they have no choice.Let the hornets rebuild into a new playoff team and hope the value returns.

restricted GS swingman lists denver as one of five teams interested in him…if we didn’t have to overpay, i’d like to see him on the team. http://www.ibabuzz.com/warriors/2011/12/08/reggie-williams-fielding-offers/

Very good price tag for Reggie

He is definitely worth at least $3 mil. Nuggets should just sign him if they can get him at that price. Get Nene and AAA first and it seems other FAs will join (I mean Josh Howard wanted to go where Nene went so I am sure other players have similar opinions). The Nene ministry has an allure that is hard to avoid.

first the Lakers almost make themselves worse, now don’t but in the process completely alienate Odom and Gasol and possibly Bynum, thus make themselves worse. If anyone thought the Lakers were just going through the motions last year they haven’t seen anything yet. 3/5’s of their starting lineup couldn’t care less about the “team” anymore. haha.

Oh hell yea!!

I can already smell it, Gallo, Moz, Faried, and Hamilton will be a pseudo big four with Gallo, Faried, and Hamilton having all-star appearances (or maybe snubbed because they are in Denver) and Moz being voted MIP.
Then we end up getting a lottery pick in 2014 after the Knicks have a terrible 2013-2014 season when Amare is sitting the whole season from a second microfracture surgery and Tyson Chandler has foot surgery.
Melo becomes the new Antoine Walker and has gained 30 lbs (mostly fat) since the trade. There is no salary space to sign anyone and the Knicks are in luxury tax hell.
I can just see it now. We could be a dynasty after that pick if everything goes well.

Late Breaking News ESPN

Updated: December 9, 2011, 1:02 AM ET
Sources: Dwight Howard eyeing Nets
By Chris Broussard
ESPN The Magazine

The New Jersey Nets have been told by Dwight Howard’s representatives that they are his preferred destination and that the Orlando Magic superstar is preparing to ask the Magic to trade him to the Nets, according to sources close to the situation.

by TakeFive on Dec 8, 2011 11:09 PM MST reply actions

That same report states...

“The Nets are continuing to pursue free agent center Nene in case their plan to acquire Howard falls through.”

by topnation on Dec 8, 2011 11:16 PM MST up reply actions

Which doesn't make a ton of sense

as the D-Howard trade make take some time as they allow other teams to
make offers as well…. which they’d have to do, otherwise we’re back to the
player forcing his choice.

by TakeFive on Dec 8, 2011 11:19 PM MST up reply actions

If Dwight does end up on the Nets

I really would have wanted that CP3 deal to go through. I expect there to be backlashes from this attempted trade. The sooner D12 goes to the Nets, the better for everyone.
I actually think a D12, Dwill pairing would be scary and they would have enough cap space to sign legit help.
That is a team to look out for in the East. I think they can beat Miami, Boston, and whatever other crap is in the East. The Knicks won’t even make the playoffs after Amare and Chandler blow out their knees and back respectively, and they have no depth lol.

Spend a couple hours in the studio

Drinking beers, laying down tracks….

Come back to find the Paul to the Lakers deal nixed. Can’t say I’m too thrilled. Really thought the trade was bad for the Lakers. And anything bad for the Lakers is good for the Nuggets, right?

I don’t know. If the last 12 hours proves anything, it’s that the NBA is every bit as dysfunctional as naysayers like I have been saying for the last 10 years.

It sucks. Basketball is such a great sport — I love the speed and athleticism — but the National Basketball Association is such a piss-poor professional league. Stern should resign.

I like to laugh, but the NBA is the laughingstock of pro sports right now.

the only bad thing is if they rework the deal to include a sign/trade of david west, so that the lakers take on more salary. It wouldn’t be a good thing if they got a solid pf, but then again that guy’s knees are also pretty bad. I guess we’ll see.

by TyLawesome on Dec 8, 2011 11:55 PM MST up reply actions

I think one sentence in Gilbert's letter makes it obvious why this happened

Most teams would miss out on that sweet $21m in luxury tax. It has nothing (directly) to do with competitive balance.

The frothing laker hater in me is not sure what to make of this. I feel like somehow we are still heading for Howard to LA. The league will not allow them to miss out on both D12 and CP3.

by Rainbow skyline on Dec 9, 2011 12:07 AM MST reply actions

I think D12 is going to the Nets

It makes too much sense not to happen and the league can’t intervene since they don’t own either team.

Chauncey Billups has left New York’s training camp without the Knicks’ permission and gone back to his hometown of Denver.
He was broken the news that he likely won’t be in New York this year, and with the amnesty rules written as they are he’ll have little say in where he lands. Needless to say, he’s pretty angry right now. His fantasy value is likely to fall, and possibly plummet, outside of New York.

because now they don’t have the big story to develop in LA and they can’t build their dream team that they wanted of New York, LA, Chicago, and Miami. I could give a rats ass less about it because I know what its like to get your star traded away.

A baseball park is the one place where a man's wife doesn't mind his getting excited over somebody else's curves

yep, media loves the super-teams

I personally would like to see NBA play chicken with Paul and see if he really rides out his contract and signs with less money to a contender or gets max deal with a non-contender or NO. I for one and tired of guys forcing their way around.

Just read about NBA saying no to Paul to LA

Here is what happened. 20 some owners called Stern and said “no way.”

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
