The Nuggets future hinges on Gallo

The Nuggets' not-so small forward Danilo Gallinari makes the party start.

Yes, the Denver Nuggets have just re-signed Nene Hilario. Yes, they re-signed Arron Afflalo. Yet, it's a signing that they must make next season that will determine the fate of this version of your favorite NBA basketball team.

Star-divide

Before we get started with today's article, let me show you something. Just let this video soak in while you prepare yourself for what I'm about to say. No, it's not pretty - and quite frankly it's not very good. In fact, this may be one of the worst representations of European music since ABBA. Yet, much like a car crash, you fear to watch but you cannot turn away.

I give you Party Start, Party Stop

THE BIG SHOTS - "PARTY START-PARTY STOP" (via thebigshotsadmin)

Yes, that man doing what can only be described as the bicycle is the Denver Nuggets' and Italy's own Danilo Gallinari. Gallo, you can call him. Watch him dance his way into your hearts my fellow Stiffs, because if the Nuggets have their way - the future of this franchise will rest on his considerably large shoulders.

While I can debate the merits of the above song; (of which there are few) I can't debate the merits of Gallo's importance on the Nuggets future. If you read between the lines of the Nuggets recent signings of Nene and AAA, (and trading for Rudy Fernandez and Corey Brewer) they have said "we like last year's team". This means the Nuggets will be heavily dependent on the development and upside of Gallo and Ty Lawson. Rather than tanking and trying to acquire a star through the draft (as others, as well as I, have suggested) the Nuggets firmly believe and hope that their future is already in-house.

To a certain extent they are right. In Gallo's second game with the Nuggets against the Portland Trail Blazers last February he showed his ability to take over a game (scoring 27 points by the end of the third quarter). It is also the game where he injured his toe, which hampered him for the entire remainder of the season. Before that game Gallo had lift, he had explosion, and he was quick. After that game he couldn't jump and his explosiveness was gone, so he resorted to drawing as many fouls as he could to compensate ...

(...I make da party start, I make da party stop... AHHHHHHRG...get out of my head!!)

... for his lack of lift. We didn't ever see the "true" Gallo after that point. It also must be pointed out that, while uncoordinated, Gallinari has a sneaky shooting touch and good court vision. He often is out ahead on fastbreaks and can even lead a break with his ball handling skills. He seems to have a good chemistry working with Lawson and that will be very important moving forward.

Meanwhile, let's not discount Gallo's time in Europe during the lockout. From all accounts he was ripping it up in Italy and improved with each week. Now, there are those among us who may scoff at the notion of "ripping up Europe," but Gallo gained important basketball time (so did Ty, Timofey Mozgov, Kosta Koufos and Rudy) while others were waiting things out. This will give these players a certain edge in this lockout-shortened season that others do not have.

Let's face it, the Nuggets have left themselves no other choice than to depend of the further development of these players, chief among them Gallo. A lack of "take over" players haunted the Nuggets in their playoff series against the Thunder. While the concept of team basketball is all well and good, you still need that guy who can put the team on his shoulders and carry them over the finish line ... like Atlas carrying the earth. It's this hope that the Nuggets are placing in Gallo.

While there are those who expect the same out of Ty Lawson - I remain skeptical. I need to see that will from Lawson. Too often Lawson is very passive and lays back and doesn't exploit his quickness. It's not for a lack of talent, as that's definitely there. While there are some who blame coach George Karl and his rather - curious - use of the two point guard lineup (which still perplexes me and drives me to distraction) I tend to think a person who is naturally aggressive would just take over anyway. No excuses. This is as big a year for Lawson to take a leap forward as it is for Gallo too, and I'm just as curious to see what Ty does.

Although, one note for Gallo. Man, learn some new dance moves. At least do the jerk or the stanky leg or something (and yes, I know what the stanky-leg is - doesn't mean I like it). You are a big, good looking Italian guy ... supplement the swarthy accent with some killer moves in the club and you will go far ...

... what am I saying? He doesn't need advice from me. Keep doing the bicycle Gallo! Just remember remember to drop in 25 points a night between pedals!

(...I make da party start, I make the party stop...)

Haha wow that is some terrible dancing.

I think I saw the puppet at one point. And I agree, if Gallo can stay healthy he will be a force this year, but so many people looked so good last night, I don’t even know where to start! Color me incredibly excited about this squad. It has all the
makings of a contender and eases my star-hating heart at the same time. That said I’s like to finish with two thoughts:

2. MANIMAL THE RIDUNKULOUS! (Thanks Cat)

Hey everybody. ’Been lurking for a while but with season underway and given the Nugs performance last night I am too pumped not to post. It is way too early to make any predictions, but I think it is sake to say this squad will surprise a lot of teams. And by surprise I mean sneak up on them and rip their hearts out. You and I have both said 4th

But I think I’m going to say 2nd or third now. Reason being this: OKC will be #1 barring an injury to Durant or Westcrook. (yes I misspelled that on purpose) we will be fighting Dallas LAL LAC for the next 4 spots. This schedule will brutalize some of these older teams. We will have a full 15 man roster and don’t be supervised to see GK give some guys a night off randomly. Those extra 3 guys can get spotty minutes but this team has the ability to change it up at will on a team. We will be the 2 or 3. GK knows the importance of staying on the opposite side of the bracket from OKC.
My preseason prediction is this:
WCF will be OKC vs Nuggets
ECF will be Miami vs Chicago.

I think Andre was the best player last night and he was a fantastic pickup, he is so unselfish. I was worried when I read the reports here last week during the scrimmage that he was disinterested and looked out of shape. Well last night I saw a determined, unselfish, leader.

This is a solid squad, no question, but

It is hard to rotate the position of go-to guy, unless you have multiple All-stars (the Knicks can give the key touch to Amare or Melo). Someone will have to step forward, and Gallo looks like he has the fire to do it .
Who else? Nene has not shown that he wants the ball in crunch time, and we’ll just have to see if Ty grows more aggressive. AAA could get the call when a 3 is required, the toughest situation of all, but in most other situations you want a guy who knows how to get to the foul line, like Gallo.
So good call, Jeff.

I was most impressed with Manimal last night.

The energy he brought and the fact that he was always around the basket will make it hard for George to keep him chained up. 5 offensive boards? Awesome.
I really liked Julyan Stone as well, he showed some good stuff; a sweet jumper (especially after being told he didn’t have one), and the ball leaves his hands quicker than anyone I’ve seen on the pass.
Those were based off of rookie expectations though.
I liked Rudy being aggressive on both ends of the floor and he showed some nifty passing. Gallo also impressed me and his no-look bounce pass to Mozzy was great. And ‘Dre? What more do I need to say than 12 assists? We have a GREAT passing team and as long as guys keep moving without the ball we’ll be hard to stop. Granted, it was against the BEST defensive team in the league….
I’m excited for the season to start, too bad I’ll miss the first month while I’m abroad with no internet. :(

Faried is still a rookie. Have some faith in Karl and allow him to bring Faried along slowly. The bottom line is if Faried is THAT good, he will play his way into Karl’s rotation. It isn’t Karl doesn’t play rookies. He played Ty, and even Forbes last year. If you are good enough, you will play. But we are deep up front, and that has to be taken into consideration when thinking of Faried’s minutes. Patience everyone.

Here's what's really impressive about Gallo

He is the most versatile player we have, by far.

There are players who are stronger, quicker, faster, taller, shoot better, pass better, rebound better but, for the most part, that’s all they are/do.

Gallo is strong enough (getting stronger, steroids?:)),

quick enough for a 6’10 "small forward (as tall as Nene),

fast enough (see him getting ahead of court?),

again 6’10" small forward = nice,

the most efficient shooter I’ve ever stated up – > 1.5 pts per shot, very good foul shooter, outside shooter, better than all the superstars I’ve looked up,

a natural, willing, unselfish passer

Gallo is 6’10 and filling out. He can rebound well for a small forward who doesnt try to inflate rebound stats with meaningless catches. He also doesnt get more reb’s because he positions in rebounding notch for opponents free throws.

Gallo is also a fine go-to at end game though the idea that you have to have only one go-to at the end is frankly preposterous. It’s the brainchild of agents and dopey analysts who need to hype “The One”

A better formula is to a have a really good go-to with lots of others in the wings. I like Gallo as crunch time shooter but dont you feel good with AAA, or Ty, or even Nene, taking that last shot? I’m OK with that

BTW, look for Gallo to develop a mid=range game. If he does, we’re talking all-star.

by sgiustra on Dec 21, 2011 8:14 AM MST reply actions   1 recs

I agree

I think the idea that you need a superstar to take that big shot is ridiculous. It is molded by the media and promoted by the NBA. How many times have you seen a Derek Fisher or Robert Horry, classic role players, hit HUGE shots at the end of games, even winning games? Quite often.

What you need is a collection of talented players that all have that ability and run a play and get the best shot. AAA hit a game winner last year. Gallo could hit that shot. Ty can break down a defense better than any. Andre Miller has a great post up game and a good mid range shot. Lots of options guys. Rudy has also hit HUGE shots in international play. Options galore!

by NugzJunkie on Dec 21, 2011 9:29 AM MST up reply actions

Options are great

but the nuggets suffered at the end of last year and in the playoffs from not having a guy who could stop a scoring drought. They didn’t have anyone who could go down, create his own shot, and score. The reason a Derek Fisher or a Robert Horry were open for those shots was because a teammate drew the defense to them. We didn’t have that last year.

by JR15 on Dec 21, 2011 9:37 AM MST up reply actions

Maybe, or maybe

we couldnt overcome our numerous injuries

I dont really recall being short a clutch shooter. Apart from injuries, IMO, Ray Felton’s effect on our playoff chances vs OKC, was extremely negative.

Too many shots, too many missed shots, not enough assists, and IMO, a player who’s insistence on his “starness” was more distracting than anything JR was presenting after the trade, a rare player who goes over the line of mere confidence, into overconfidence.

I dont care about his strengths, though he has some and I thank God he’s gone.

by sgiustra on Dec 21, 2011 9:40 AM MST up reply actions

Those were both factors

not just one. There were injuries. The team was also lacking that player who could score at will. Here’s hoping they are healthy and that Ty and Gallo continue to develop.

Formerly KS and CS

by ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown on Dec 21, 2011 9:50 AM MST up reply actions

+1

It was clear we had no one to rely on during the playoffs to create for himself during crunch time. Injuries wasn’t a factor IMO. Maybe Gallo was hurt, but the confidence was definitely not there. This season should be different. Gallo and Ty know their our guys and that they need to fill those roles.

by RoxWS2014 on Dec 21, 2011 10:36 AM MST up reply actions

There is some truth to that...

But also keep in mind that Denver was an extremely young, inexperienced team in last years playoffs. The team had only been together for about 2 months.

Add on top of that the injuries, plus some terrible calls that might have cost us games. That playoff series could have ended differently. True, Denver didn’t get it done, but I think it had nothing to do with not have a “star”

This team has several guys that can create shots for themselves. I think we will see that come into play numerous times this year.

by NugzJunkie on Dec 21, 2011 10:31 AM MST up reply actions

I think a reason we need "The One"....

…has more to do with star treatment by the refs, especially in the playoffs. I am one of those that has skepticism towards the refs and company….this league shows star treatment much more blatantly than the other pro sports leagues. If the refs truly called it equal (or at least close to equal), I agree our team wouldn’t need The One.

Bonaire, most of the reasons given for needing THE ONE

are just products of lazy, stereotyped thinking but you bring up a great point vis a vis the refs.

Refs arent “cheating” they just call basically habit calls for the stars.

Bt excepting that goaltend call in the 1st game, refs are going to basically call games, hmmm, how shall I say? adequately.

Look, if we take the OKC series, what was more responsible for our loss, injuries and foul shooting or refs calls. The way I see it victory was within our control

But Gallo does know how to draw calls.

It is not that you need a superstar to take the big shot . .

You need someway to generate good offensive possession when everyone is playing the best players, playing their hardest, and when it is most important.

Getting good possessions at that point in the game/season become more difficult and historically, having a guy who can demand a double or triple team increases the likelihood of having a good possession. For years Utah did it with an effective system and excellent pick and roll as niether Stockton or Malone are classic create-shot superstars, but they have been the exception rather than the rule.

especially when I thought Nene was going to Rockets, however with Nene, Miller, Ty all with potential PER’s over 18 and Gallo looking poised to make a leap we really do have a chance, especially if Gallo has the “it” factor, that competitive streak that comes alive in the clutch.

Hope he lands somewhere of interest to him, but I don’t really care. We’re all set at the CRAZY slot with Faried, and Birdman looks healthy enough to patrol the lane in somewhat intimidating fashion.

Here is my top 12

PG: Lawson, Miller
SG: Afflalo, Fernandez
SF: Gallinari, Brewer
PF: Nene, Harrington, Faried
C: Mozgov, Andersen, Koufos

Karl will rotate the guards liberally, mixing and matching all four of those guys, even some with the dreaded two PG lineup (which in stretches can be very effective)

I think Brewer, with his D, will become a regular rotation guy at SF

Unless Harrington starts to stink it up, Faried will struggle to find minutes at his most ideal position, the PF. True, sometimes Nene can swing to the C and that free’s up more minutes at PF, but with 3 options at Center, I don’t see it happening regularly. Faried will end up being an ocassional bench spark. (Can you image Faried, Bird, and Rudy all checking in at the same time? WOW, what a bolt of energy that would be!!)

Mozgov will struggle with foul trouble, so expect to see Birdman a lot and Koufos in spot minutes.

Thats what I was thinking.

But Denver doesn’t have another PG. So maybe see 1 more minor trade for a 3rd PG. Or wait till cuts come and pick up a guard that can swing between SG and PG? In which case who do you cut? Brewer or Koufos?

I see it exactly this way too

Hopefully Hamilton will find a way to beat out Brewer, but I doubt it and can only hope he’ll be placed in a situation where he’ll develop.

I’ll be surprised if Koufos doesn’t end up getting dumped for an upgrade at some point, but I guess for now he makes some sense.

I don’t see any urgency to add a third PG that will not play. Stone should be D-Leagued but in whatever way we need to keep his rights.

This is a pretty decent team. Reflecting everyone else’s views…hopefully Faried finds a way to get some burn.

by TakeFive on Dec 21, 2011 11:20 AM MST up reply actions

I don't disagree

that he’s a reasonable place-filler. Every team needs a 12th man, and all the better if he’s 7 feet tall and can shoot. But as the year develops, with injuries and other factors in play, he and Brewer are clearly the least valuable assets and most likely to be moved to fix holes/upgrade.

Sign and trades don't typically yield a lot

When the Knicks did a sign and trade for David Lee, they basically got three scrubs in return. I would guess they might get a late first round pick from a playoff contender looking to fill a hole, at best. But anything is better than nothing.

I'd be down for that.

I’ve expressed my distaste for Chandler before. Not a team player; less talented, but talented nonetheless, version of Melo. He won’t want to be on our team come next year, I can guarantee you that, because he won’t be starting. A late 1st rounder in this upcoming draft means something.

I tend to agree

that the best bet is to get something before we lose him for nothing. I think he won’t be happy being a backup to Gallo his entire career, so I see him wanting to start, which will not happen here in Denver. So best to move on and get whatever asset you can in return, preferably future draft picks since we are very deep at the moment.

Even if Chandler’s not giving 110%, his 80-90% is still at least a 6th man in this league. You could see during games that even though he wasn’t really passionate about playing for us, basketball players don’t just throw games.

Out music

I didn’t mean that distro, nor much of the music they carry, but rather the murky, catch-all term for music that’s way outside the mainstream. Outside (or out) music; creative music; experimental. No word captures it, but there was a time when avant garde worked.

European free improvisation (and some jazz-“classical” hybrid composition) is my passion these days. Here’s just a smattering of the artists I follow: John Butcher, Thomas Lehn, Frank Gratkowski, Georg Graewe, Evan Parker, Wolfgang Fuchs, John Edwards, Phil Minton, Paul Lovens.

But I’ve long loved out jazz from the good ole USA, too. Anthony Braxton, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Ornette (the very old stuff) and so on. My interest in exploratory stuff got started in high school with Yes, King Crimson, Soft Machine, Gentle Giant, Hendrix, Mahavishnu Orchestra and the like. That shit was contemporary while I was in high school—yeah, I’m an old fart.

Until 2004, I presented and otherwise promoted weird music in Seattle, as an editor of a newsletter, as a producer of the long-running Seattle Improvised Music Festival, and then with my own tiny venue called Polestar Music Gallery.

Anyway, nice to find something of a fellow traveler here on DS. What else are you listening to these days?

Zappa was certainly a high school fave, TID

And later on, too. Not interested anymore, but that doesn’t mean his wasn’t scintillating music. And what a killer guitarist, often on some people’s list of the very best ever.

A lot of what I listen to—and Zorn’s game pieces fall into this broad category—has no time signature or tonal center in the traditional sense. Not for everyone, to say the least. And lest I sound “elitist,” an old charge against anything avant garde, I’m still a sucker for some rock music and singer-songwriters.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply, KFH

A lot of great artists you list that I also like. Definitely a big fan of early Ornette Coleman, and always had a soft spot in my heart for Rahsaan Roland Kirk. I started as a youngster with more noise and slacker bands (Polvo, US Maple), developing an appreciation for the ones that paved the way before them in free jazz and other genres as I’ve aged (nearly thirty now). These days, there are too many bands to list, but I do currently play in a doom metal band as a primary guitarist and writer, drawing a lot of influence from a band that started on Capitol Hill in Seattle that was called Burning Witch (Stephen O’Malley, if you know him from Sunn(o))) or his other projects…). Anyway, the next time in Seattle, I’d love to talk music over a heavily Cascade-hopped brew… I hope I don’t sound like a snob – Warren Zevon and Hall & Oates are guilty pleasures…

Well alright!

Again, great to know somebody here on DS is into music that’s a little out there. I love noise, too, with the Japanese guys leading the way for me. Merzbow, Boredoms, Ruins (not exactly noise), MSBR, Masonna and the like. That also reminds me of how much I love Otomo Yoshihide. We had him at Polestar a couple of times in an extremely noisy incarnation. Both times he did one set on guitar and another on turntable. Ever heard the Ground Zero (an Otomo unit) recording, Revolutionary Peking Opera? What a masterpiece.

I’m an IPA nut, and we sure have ‘em by the truckload out here. Let me know when you’ll be around. In 2005 I moved to a rural area a couple of hours northeast of Seattle, but work and friends bring me down there all the time. My daughter lives there, too. Meanwhile, see you back here as we rant and rave all things Nuggets.

Oh yeah, can you hook me up with a recording of your band? I’m not a fan of mp3s and listening over the net. Guess I’m proud to be a snob in that regard. Take care.

As with many of us Stiffs, I’ve adopted a hopeful but not optimistic wait and see attitude. And thanks for your clarification.

It baffles me how Karl can stay so damn passive much of the time over there on the bench. Or that’s how it appears, anyway. At the same time, I admire him (after a fashion) when he says that’s what practice is for, and that the game is, well, for letting ’em things.

But anybody with eyes and two brain cells can see a middle ground is where it’s at. I mean, has Karl never heard of the concept of in-game adjustments? Teaching in real time? You played this sequence great, but you ain’t doing that sequence even close to how we designed it. Hey, get your ass off the floor if you’re gonna ignore how we want to play. Bench guy, get in there and show him how it’s done. X’s and O’s, along with the kisses and hugs.

Pretty please? The man has been coaching for a long time. Should that make us hopeful or fatalistic? Who the hell knows.

Just because Karl is honest that minutes will be tight, doesn’t mean that Faried won’t get burn. He will play, but also with our depth, we cannot expect Faried to play significantly…especially early on. But in one of these 4 games in 5 nights, I think we will see more of Faried.

Must say I find your comment confusing, though. And I for one will not be tolerant of religious persecution—and I do not mean that in its traditional usage. In my opinion (and that of many others), it’s time to name just how dangerous religion is; that it is mass delusion; that those who preach peace often practice anything but; that there is danger of theocratic regimes coming to power in many regions of the world, including our own; that community and individual freedoms are continually threatened by religion and its practitioners.

I agree that religion (and politics) are relevant to sports and most every other subject that relates to mass society, but I don’t think most Stiffs or our moderators want these overt discussions here. So this is the last word from me on this.

All I will say is if we had this same team and Poppovich instead of Karl

We would have a very very very high chance of winning it all. I trust whatever Pop does.
However, with Karl, I still think this team can win in spite of him. It is just not as likely. Maybe Karl gets an epiphany and realizes he has a good player in Faried and good off guards so he doesn’t have to play 2 PGs all the time.
Karl is the one who needs to develop the most, if that happens we will win in the playoffs.
I appreciate a good regular season coach but like Jeremy at RMC I am tired of first round exits. Please Karl place a half court offense, we have great players for the pick and roll and we can go inside outside. Please don’t fast break all the time!!!

Some good news there

Said they run want to run the dribble drive motion offense about 50% of the time, and a lot of pick and roll. I love pick and roll offense, easiest offense to run, very hard to defend. Also, Karl allowed an assistant to speak with the press, which is rare.

Then there was this:

Karl also uses a two-point guard offense — this season it will be Lawson and Andre Miller

I’ve led a life up to this point full of disappointment, and I promise GK will come to the same assessment. He’ll scowl at me, refuse to talk to me, leave me at the end of the bench. I’ll do it without distraction to the team, just so GK can have a scapegoat. I’m willing to do that at the vet minimum for our Nuggets. It’ll be tough, but I’ll do it for the fans.

by jbmmlang on Dec 21, 2011 5:14 PM MST up reply actions

I just started coming to this site a few weeks ago

And I must say I feel my many of my thoughts are confirmed by many of you. First, wathcing the Spurs in the playoffs, it is so clear that Pop is the greatest mind in the NBA. You just trust what he does. GK, on the other hand, is totally BS-ing out there, making overdramatic personnel and coaching decisions.

Feel free to disagree, but didn’t Karl create the “monster” that was JR Smith? His role was to come in once we were down and score points. He did just that. Then he gets scolded for playing that exact role. It’s just one example, but I think that best exemplifies how blind he is as a team manager.

And don’t get me started with the 2 PG’s. He falls in love with these random players: Anthony Carter, Earl F-ing Boykins, Linas Kleiza…You have a super talent pigeon-holed on the bench. JR was never given the opportunity to mature. It’s likely too late for him now, but GK has got some weird approach with this team.

Here’s my plan on that. He can spend the entire season insulting our former players, like he did after the Melo trade. He’s already on record talking about how Rudy is like J.R. only less crazy. SI ranks the contenders

puts Denver in the "Don’t Sleep on them " Group

Denver Nuggets

John Hollinger of ESPN.com nailed this in his Western Conference preview Tuesday, so I won’t belabor it here: The Nuggets are a very good team, and they have the kind of borderline 12-man depth to be a major pain in the regular season. Denver was the league’s most efficient scoring team before the Carmelo Anthony deal, and it nearly led the league in both points scored and allowed per possession after the trade. In other words: The Nuggets lost Melo and basically became the best team in the league.

The key pieces are all still here, and at least three of them — Arron Afflalo, Ty Lawson and Danilo Gallinari — are poised for mini-breakouts. Depth on the front line will be an issue, and Denver might run into the same crunch-time issues that derailed them in the playoffs against the Thunder. Nene isn’t a reliable go-to scorer against top defenses, and no one has yet emerged as a late-game pick-and-roll creator under the highest pressure. But don’t be surprised if this team pushes for home court in the first round.

…agreeing with Jeff about Gallo, and tossing in Rudy off the bench as a similar lynchpin of our season. I also gave my assessment of the rest of the team and how good-to-great we’ll be if those two shine and the other stupendous talent can come together relatively quickly in this condensed season. (Nowhere near a given.)

You’ll have to take my word that it was incisive and compelling, because somehow it disafuckingppeared, and I ain’t writing it again.

At least it’s my birthday today, and as my present my sweetie got us tickets for Nuggets-Blazers down in Portland on December 29. (I live two hours northeast of Seattle.) I’ll be the older man screaming “MANIMAL!!!” I’ll also be rooting for Rudy and Dre along with most of the Blazer fans.

Yee hah!!!

by LongWindedHank on Dec 22, 2011 3:44 PM MST up reply actions

Jeff, I love Gallo and believe he has more upside than any other Nug...

but, we are too deep for me to actually believe that its Gallo or bust.

Here’s a bit of empirical evidence, small sample, but when Gallo was injured, I think Nugs went 8 – 0.

If Gallo doesnt collapse, as long as other players flower, we will be OK, even a contender.

But, I somewhat accept your thesis because I dont believe there is another Nugget who can conceivably flower into a consistent star. Lots of effective players, yes. But no real stars.

As I suggested above, Gallo has enough physical attributes, skills, youth and ability to learn pretty quickly, a combination that no other Nugget possesses.

A big concern for me is, to be great, or a star, Gallo will need some leadership ability. As he matures, will he take on a leadership role? Will he ever impose self on a team mate, bark out orders, does he assert himself with Karl, in the locker room? We dont know.

Frankly, being a Euro with a nascent understanding of English works against him. But we’ve seen guys like Parker, Ginobilli and a few others lead. But gallo may need a few notches before he can assert self

by sgiustra on Dec 21, 2011 6:46 PM MST reply actions

Gallo or Bust

Gallo is not Melo but do agree he’s got a shot to be something special. Not sure it’s put a team on your back and carry it special but there’s no question he’s a top talent. That first step makes him a candidate to be the guy you run the offense through but he’s going to have to learn how to bottle it so it’s not this out of control thing that’s leading to turnover city. That’s going to take floor spacing maturity. My guess is they’ll run it through Nene, which is probably the better choice right now. That means running guys off picks on the perimeter and backpicks underneath from the weakside. Gallo’s a candidate to do both. My worries with him is being able to stay on the court, injury wise.

If everyone is mad about our 2 PG lineup

The Clippers have a 2 PG lineup for most of the game. And their bench is only PGs (Bledsoe and Williams).
I assume one of those guys will be traded for a backup center and SG, but in the meantime I have a feeling Karl is going to play 2 PG against the Clipshow and it won’t hurt us :)

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

by JR15 on Dec 21, 2011 9:47 PM MST reply actions

Me... I don't mind the so-called 2PG lineup

I mean it’s not like they’re both trying to bring the ball up the floor at the same time.
It’s five players against five players. Whoever works in the situation to win is good by me.

by TakeFive on Dec 21, 2011 10:09 PM MST up reply actions

If all five positions function effectively...

…then sure, it’s fine and dandy. A ton of Stiffs think otherwise, right? How does this play out in the game flow, stats and so on?

This might be worth someone putting up a thread for Stiffs to discuss at length. I for one would appreciate developing a more informed opinion on the 2PG line-up.

Clippers bench sucks

I am watching that game and even the Clippers announcers are saying the Nuggets will be a force to deal with.
Not everyone is looking over us, I think the smarter basketball minds realize the talent the Nuggets have.

by JR15 on Dec 21, 2011 10:34 PM MST reply actions

So they were sweet talkin' us eh?

Let’s see the Clippers have a better?
PG…. check
SG… tossup
PF… check
C…. check
SF… not
Bench… tossup

by TakeFive on Dec 21, 2011 11:42 PM MST up reply actions

I used to do that position check thing

But I am starting to learn it is a team sport so it becomes irrelevant. I think the Nuggets had worse in most positions post Melo trade and still ended up with an 18-7 record.
Plus AAA is better than Chauncey at the SG position so thats not close. And though CP3 has the individual hardware (though he looked like a fool against the Nuggets), Lawson is not that far off.
Griffin is the only one with a huge advantage over Nene while I think Moz may not put up the stats that DJ does, but will keep him in check.
Moz is pretty good at breaking up alley-oops.
Oh yeah and our bench is waaay better than the Clips bench right now, they have some moves to make to solidify that bench. They had to play their starters to close out the game cuz their bench was getting beat by the depleted Laker’s bench.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

Given Billip's stats so far, if Afflalo is better (let alone way better) that's great.

How can you have three starters displaced by new faces and say the Clippers bench hasn’t gotten better?

by TakeFive on Dec 22, 2011 12:04 AM MST up reply actions

Wait... the Lakers bench did rattle off a bunch of three's

but that’s too their credit. Good to see Blake light it up btw.
Thompkins looked pretty good at Center, Mo was very good, Their bench not as good as Nuggets, true, but they don’t care as their bench will be mostly….. on the bench.

by TakeFive on Dec 22, 2011 12:22 AM MST up reply actions

Billups better player than AAA

But he is out of position. And the Clippers bench has a lot of dudes in disarray. This season more than any, the bench is very important.
I still like how the Clippers look, but I will see how they look in April after the toll of the season.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

When you take parts (players) in the NBA

Talents arent usually additive. Its not like baseball where you could add a 30 homerun guy to a team that only had 10 homeruns in that position and you’ve added 20 HRs.

Doesnt work that way in basketball. Basketball is chemical, the players play and style affects every other player.

Thats why the Nuggets were unexpectedly good after trade (remember many thought we’d slide out of playoff picture not climb up a notch) and Knicks still average after trade. Analysts were just adding up figures after trade. The NBA is not simple arithmetic.

Also, Melo was overrated by casual observers, and Ty getting more minutes helped a lot.

i keep dancing on my own.

by atomiccafe on Dec 22, 2011 1:04 PM MST up reply actions

absolutely

Carmello is an average player. He scores 1.25 pts per shot. Thats below avg. His FG% is 45%. Thats avg for the league. He must lead the league in missed shots, no?

Its just since he takes 20 shots a game, some games are good, some avg, the rest are bad. But what ever he does, he so dominates, monopolizes the game that however he plays his particular effect is overwhelming.

Quick story. First game as Knick vs Bucks, at the Garden, after only one short practice, Mello took up 25 shots. 25!!! My jaw dropped at his audacity and frankly how terribly stupid it was.

Yes the Knick fans were cheering. So what?

Mello got lots of positive press for the 25 pts. He soared right ahead of Amare who busted his butt and knees for the Knicks.

Oh, he missed 15 shots. 10 for 25. Not a good game but Mello got good press.

I looked at some, still Knick fans and said, “Just like I told you, a horrible owner, team, team star, boring, selfish.”

Basketball is chemistry. You cant just create a Frankensteins Monster team. The Heat could still cheat this rule because they may have 2 of the best 3 players on the planet but their chemistry is still not good.

The Nene and Lawson injuries happened at practice from what I hear

Day to day can mean a couple of weeks which is a bunch of games this season. I guess Julyan can get some burn. I think Nene will be back by the first game, probably hurting from not being in the best shape.
Also says Harrington and Fernandez are hurting for tomorrow.
I am most worried about Lawson, remember how he hurt himself before the playoffs. I hope he doesn’t rush back.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

by JR15 on Dec 21, 2011 11:29 PM MST reply actions

this injury thing could throw a monkey wrench into the whole works

I trust Nugget staff is working 24/7 on problems because we wont win if we consistently have 2 – 3 important cogs on injury list.

Having injured players will drastically reduce 2 of our strengths, depth and versatility. Not having a star led team means we cant just have functioning players around a 2 – 3 man core and go for it.

We have to have all of our parts working, working with each other, more or less all the time or we could really sink.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
