Nuggets add defensive minded DeMarre Carroll

The Milwaukee Bucks matched the Nuggets offer on defensive ace Luc Mbah a Moute. Back to the drawing board, the Nuggets added a cheaper option, but a skilled defensive player in DeMarre Carroll out of Missouri (Josh Kroenke's Alma mater). After playing in 71 games as a rookie during the 2009-10 season, Carroll appeared in just 12 games last season with the Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets.

Star-divide

The Nuggets surely didn't add a major piece in the Carroll signing. He averaged just 2.9 points as a rookie, 1.4 points with the Grizz last season, and appeared in just some garbage time games with the Rockets where he averaged 0.0 points.

I can still recall Missouri's nice college run with Carroll, a record 31 win season in 2009, and the team's relentless defense. It should come as no surprise that Carroll's nickname is "Junkyard Dog" as he's a good defender and tireless rebounder. I don't expect a large role for Carroll with the Nuggets, but he should be a help in practice to drive the team forward and perhaps he can earn some court time.

You can follow Carroll on Twitter here: @DeMarreCarroll1 where he has recently tweeted:

Headin to Denver! Thought it was Utah but I got a better feelin about Denver!!!!!! We out.....

Just landed in Denver.. I havent seen snow since I left MIZZOU..This crazy!!!!

Just got finish gettin shots up wit the coaches. I feel like im back in my MIZZOU days, when i transferred from Vandy to MIZZOU!!!

Other NBA news:

No secret now, but Chauncey Billups was officially claimed by the Los Angeles Clippers. If Billups decides to retire rather than report, he'll lose out on $14.2 million.

Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post has a fun story up on Kenneth Faried and his "Manimal" nickname. The Nuggets now have a Junkyard Dog and a Manimal ... is that good? Faried has been tweeting often about "Manimal" and promoting his T-shirts, all summer.

With the Clips still shooting for the Paul trade (and after the addition of CB, the ability to ship Bledsoe in the deal), CB has got to be pissed. Bench, mentor role?

Also, with the Howard to NJ trade talk cooling, it’s looking bad for keeping Nene.

I wonder if anything of consequence for the Nugs will happen at all today.

George will be fielding another 2PG lineup in pressure situations

not sure why we’re suprised at this point http://www.denverpost.com/nuggets/ci_19537160

I don’t think it will be much different than what we did last year with Raymond Felton and Ty. They both deserve to be on the court, they’re both going to be on the court. Ty is the younger player so he needs to be involved maybe with more experiences and more situations — when we have leads, circumstances like that. But I think in the big-time games, Andre is going to be out there as much as Ty.

I don't think

Karl is scared to start him, I think Andre is going to be in there more at the end of games as kind of a closer. Which I think is going to screw with Ty’s confidence.

Next year's draft is hurting the value of Afflalo and it may even affect

the ultimate signing of Nene. In this whacky compressed season it’s easy to look ahead to one of the better draft years. This next draft has an abundance of PF’s, 4/5 guys and many very good wings.

Everybody respects Afflalo’s game but how much is it because of his team/system. Obviously he isn’t lighting a lot of fires out there. Ujiri is playing this just about right.

The Nets don't need Nene near as much as they did just two weeks ago.

The Nets needed some street cred. and they wanted to assure D-Will they would surround him with better talent. But in the last two weeks the Nets have gotten all the cred they will need. They’re a short season away from being out of NJ and into Brooklyn. D-Will isn’t going anywhere else, too much money lost.

Maybe the Nuggets standing offer reported to be 5yrs. @ $60 million will be good enough.

Nice! Hope you had a good time

Where to start?
1. Nuggets seem inclined to matching Gary Forbes offer sheet. Good move or bad move?
2. What’s holding up the Afflalo, Nene deals?
3. Can the Nuggets quire OJ mayo, any interest? Pacer might say he’s off the table, but they were trying to trade him for Brandon Rush, before the trade broke down because Pacers sign Jamal Crawford. My thoughts are the nuggets TPE and a 2nd round pick or two could do it.
4. Teams are allowed by the new CBA to help pay up to 500k to buy out players in China. Since only Denver and Pheonix have players up there, will/should we attempt to free Chandler?
5. What do you think about camp invitees Julyan Stone( actually on contract, Corry Higgins, Demarr Carrol?
6. Since we’ve now moved on from the thuggets era, what should the new era be called? The dreaded Nuggets (all the nuggs with dreads?), Young Nuggs. Masai’s Nuggs? etc.

by TyLawesome on Dec 13, 2011 1:02 PM MST up reply actions

Thanks for the breakdown tylawsome!

I don’t think much of the carrol, higgins and stone invites because they most likely won’t make much impact…but you never know

I'm with Masai here

no need to do anything rash (especially for the upcoming half-fake season), and every day nene doesn’t sign with NJ makes it more likely he returns, IMO.

by Rainbow skyline on Dec 13, 2011 1:23 PM MST up reply actions

what about this?

If the Nets resign Kris Humphries in an attempt to make a package for Howard, what do you guys think of this scenario:

Nets get: Howard and Turkoglu’s awful contract
Magic get: Nene, Lopez, Morrow, + rid of Hedo’s contract
Nuggets get: Humphries and Redick

Nene would sign in Denver before the trade too. Obviously there would be some other pieces that need to go into place (Denver may have to give up more than Nene), but it doesn’t seem too bad to start off with, right? Redick has shown some pretty good signs recently and I’m not seeing much in terms of SGs on our Roster.

Background on why Rondo is available in trade

After game two in the playoffs against the heat last year.

According to multiple sources, Rondo’s errors were being pointed out when he arose and began discussing the mistakes of his teammates. Loudly. Using harsh language.

Coach Doc Rivers got up and fired back, and Rondo threw a bottle that shattered the video screen. He bolted from the practice facility and was prevented from returning when he tried later.

by skithebert on Dec 13, 2011 3:51 PM MST up reply actions

of course but i have a feeling

with the transition from first to second team units, we will be looking for scoring. Faried provides little of that. but unlimited hustle. It becomes a pick your poison sort of thing, because we know Karl will not play them at the same time.

by Mancar on Dec 13, 2011 3:53 PM MST up reply actions

i dunno

i think with Karl playing his obvious 2PG lineup. if AAA returns plus new vets like rudy and corey brewer, i think it’s jordan hamilton that loses the most minutes. it is a nice haul

but like we’ve seen before. having this much depth is nice, but it’s not easy keeping everyone happy with minutes. karl doesn’t seem too concerned with feelings and has a history of jerking guys around minutes wise. Fernandez is already a known malcontent and Jordan Hamilton has all the makings of one. This could get ugly.

Hopefully we can eventually turn all these ‘dime’ and ‘nickel’ players into some 50cent pieces and $1 bills.

by skithebert on Dec 13, 2011 4:01 PM MST up reply actions

I'm hoping

this is part of the rebuilding process, and the plan is to just spread minutes among all the young players over the 66-games, and get everyone valuable game time experience. Can’t really see GK doing that though.

It might be difficult to keep everyone happy

But on the other hand it is a message to Afflalo and Nene that we are trying to bring in players that can help the team. I think this means Gary Forbes is not matched as well. Afflalo, Fernandez, Gallinari, Hamilton, Brewer at the 2/3 spots isn’t that bad. Hamilton will probably get the fewest minutes anyways.

I worry more about getting them all minutes if Karl plays Andre and Ty a lot of minutes together.

Biggest hole is still power forward. Karl doesn’t seem to think Faried will contribute a ton right away, and Harrington/Koufus might be our best backups after that.

by nugzin2040 on Dec 13, 2011 4:07 PM MST up reply actions

he's going to play Andre and Ty together

he’s said that directly in the article above. so those guys are gonna struggle to play assuming Gallo plays primarily at 3.

not sure what’s gonna happen with PF. haven’t heard anything about carl landry. he can provide some nice scoring ability. pretty poor rebounder/defender though. Nene would be perfect but we’re still waiting for the divas to get traded.

I agree he will...

But don’t think he will start both of them or anything. He’ll have them play together for probably ten minutes per game and then get another 15 mins or so, as rest for Ty. At least that’s what I’m hoping.

Playing two point guards long minutes together is fools gold. It will work against the bad to mediocre teams, but will be worthless against top tier teams.

by nugzin2040 on Dec 13, 2011 4:25 PM MST up reply actions

Like this news a lot more than the Fernandez/Brewer move.

I’m for giving any young player a chance, and any 2nd-year player who actually made a name for himself playing defense as a rookie has a chance to make it in the NBA.

Could definitely make some noise in a similar way that AAA did in his first year here (when everyone couldn’t believe we got him for a 2nd round pick) and Forbes did last year.

(Obviously Odom can play SF as well)

And this is before they gave us Rudy and Brewer. And recall they have a high payroll and the maximum players you can have on a roster is 15.

No harm, no foul

Tend to agree with your player evals though.

by TakeFive on Dec 13, 2011 4:37 PM MST up reply actions

it's just a waist

of space I’d rather sign Redd over both these guya. Rudy is a chucker that will frustrate you more than Fat Al because Fat Al can make some time to time and Corey Brewer shows up once about oh every 10 games or so. He would either play 20 min in a game and produce decent results then be planted on the bench for the next 3, get a chance to play, royally suck, get benched again, get another shot have a decent game so on and so on. Just a waist of money and roster space but seeing im the one who keeps bitching about not having a roster when we are 2 games away from the regular season so idk. Just not happy with this trade.

i thought so too

until i saw that he’s only 32. Remember when Grant Hill was done? And then what happened? I’d chance that at a vet min over waisting two roster sopts on Dalla’s tacos players

No to Redd.

He has little to no potential left and we’re not in a position to contend.

But I sort of agree, if not to such an extreme extent. Both players would be decent guys off the bench for playoff teams, but still not that good.

Go to NY or Sac stay out of Portland!
Source says Jamal Crawford is now considering offers from New York, Portland and Sacramento.

by TyLawesome on Dec 13, 2011 4:23 PM MST reply actions

Yeah, I hope so too.

For all his flaws, I think Crawford would make the Blazers a better team. Would be interesting to see him in NY though, and I want him nowhere near the Kings.

And I don’t want to see that screwed up lol.

You forgot to mention Salmons as well btw.

by Phil H. on Dec 13, 2011 4:30 PM MST up reply actions

It's not that I think Jimmer will be awful

(although I don’t think he’ll be very good), it’s just that they didn’t NEED him. Tyreke, Thornton, and Udrih were decent enough, and there were plenty of guards going to be available in FA.

I would’ve much rather seen them keep the pick and take a chance on Biyombo (or even Brandon Knight and Kemba are better picks than Jimmer imo) or if they really wanted Salmons in a trade (or to get rid of Beno or something) someone like Kawhi Leonard would’ve been a great pick for them.

Cubes has amnesty in his back pocket that he can use next summer to clear out another $8M (Marion/H’wood). Could easily have $20-25M in room

Expecting Afflalo back, Nene probably NOT
This just some window dressing, a tryout for a couple of players. You just never know in this Bis. No harm, no foul.

The FUTURE is next summer’s draft picks, FA’s and trades.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
