The Stiff List 10-20-11

  1. DAVID STERN: He has been #1 since August! What a tremendously awful run by the Commish. With labor meetings needing a mediator, Stern excuses himself with the flu ... he can afford a sick day? The season might be a lost cause.
  2. DOUG ROBINSON, DESERET NEWS: The columnist out of Utah calls Amar'e Stoudemire's brain, "tiny, previously unused..." Wow. One of the worst "articles" I've ever read ...
  3. BRYANT GUMBLE & BILL SIMMONS: At some point, race was going to rear its ugly head in the Lockout talk. Gumble refers to Stern as a "plantation overseer" and Simmons says NBA players (who are predominately African American) have, "limited intellectual capital." As Tom Jackson might say in a forced ESPN segment, C'mon Men!
  4. SUSPENDED LSU FOOTBALL PLAYERS: The talented trio of players: Tyrann Mathieu, Tharold Simon, and Spencer Ware all face suspensions this weekend for testing positive for synthetic marijuana. At least get your medical marijuana cards and smoke the real stuff fellas!
  5. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL: MLB officials rejected the Rangers request to let Dirk Nowitzki throw out the first pitch to Game 3 of the World Series, Oct. 22nd. But after taking a beating in the press, the officials changed their mind and will let the World Champ toss out the first pitch ... now let's just hope he does better than he did back in June!

Good list

About time.

A lot of griping to be done right now by basketball fans.

Of course, I don’t think the players or the owners even give a shit about what we think.

Might have to force myself to get interested in hockey again….

i'm surprised the editors on this site aren't on the stiff list

for making us wait close to two months if I’m not mistaken.

We’ll be posting these back on the regular!

The verbal vomit that DOUG ROBINSON, BRYANT GUMBLE & BILL SIMMONS

have spewed out the past couple of days has me wearing a poncho.

And, I know I shouldnt write this but if I ever saw Simmons on the street I … never mind. Words would not be enough with that schmuck.

I dont have a clue who Robinson is and based on his “vile” (nod to SDcat) comment laced with ignorance and racism (Where’s Gumble when you really need him) I only wish he’d have stayed anonymous to me.

Gumble, hmmm, well I have to say that I find him to be smart and articulate and entertaining. I dont believe that he said what he said because he wanted publicity or he was being venal in any other way. I do agree that Stern does sometimes appear to be condescending and I frankly side with Wade on his little row with Stern even though I think the players are wrong on this lockout.

So, I kind of get Gumble. But what he said doesnt really irk me (though I’m white, well Italian anyway).

But I’ll just throw out what one of the smartest men in the U.S. said about Gumble’s comment, and I’m not kidding – Charles Barkley. CB suggested that Gumble was dishonouring the slaves by comparing their experience to the typical NBA player’s experience. Of course Barkley is right, again. And he has his pulse on the heart of the issue. Again.

I just think that Gumble is 90% cool and 10% crazy. Wish I had such a positve balance.

Finally, why is Stern a stiff? For doing his job? Come on man. Neither he nor Hunter are stiffs. Stern has some odd mannerisms and maybe gettting a bit old but what he has done for the NBA and players is pure genius.

Finally, really finally, this time. People just dont get Dirk. I like him. I get him. Unfortunately even MLB just doesnt get Dirk. Too bad. Not sexy enough? Who cares? Guess they’d have preferred Kim K throw out 1st pitch because she has done, well…I’m waiting…

Stern took a sick day! A sick day!!!!

At a critical time when the season might be in jeopardy he excuses himself?

This tells me:
1. The owners had no intention on making a deal.
2. The meetings were just a rouse to steal some headlines during the World Series … Stern is notorious for making up news to steal headlines.

Stern took a sick day! A sick day!!!!

I dont know. Maybe…

…he’s sick?

Sort of like when Wade’s shoulder hurt, when Dirk had the flu in the Finals, etc x a million

1. The owners had no intention on making a deal.

I agree. For the owners losing money, why would they want any deal where they will lose more money. They didnt get rich being stupid.

Many owners are trying to take away what NBAers have come to expect. Sorry but no real villains or heroes here, just sides that are self-interested.

Stern took a sick day

And the two sides got absolutely nothing done that day. In fact, things may have gotten worse. Stern is not a bigger stiff than Robinson, imo.

Agreed Agaliarept

because Stern just simply isnt a stiff. But I do get the idea of making something connected to the NBA a “stiff”

I vote for big market owners who are really at the crux of the NBA – player contract squabble?

If they would do the right thing, maybe this lockout could have been averted. What’s that you ask?

Finding ways to a radical revenue sharing model with small market owners that would help assure the viability of all teams and markets. By doing this, they could all then go up to the players and say, “Hey, we are doing something pretty dramatic here and giving up a lot of money for the long term interests of the league. You have to do the same. Let’s deal.”

Surprised Morton

Didn’t veto your Gumble pick. He seemed pretty bent on defending him via twitter ha ha

I was pointing out, more or less, that Gumbel got hammered for what he said

but it’s been relatively quiet regarding Simmons rather insulting comments about players. I’m theorizing that people want to think the worst about players and are less inclined to think that way about owners. Particularly in regard to Simmons calling the players (essentially) stupid.

I thought Gumbel’s comment was clumsy and needlessly brought race into a subject that didn’t need it. If he called Stern a condescending prick who treats his players like children then his point would have been more effective.

There you go again

“Clumsy?” That’s a huge understatement and you are comparing apples to oranges. Stern is a condescending prick – anyone who has kept up with basketball knows that. The majority of players are stupid. Follow a couple on twitter and see what I mean. Regardless of whether it’s true or not, calling someone stupid is nowhere near the same level.

Playing the race card is low, but I remember he’s a journalist, and sensationalizing a story = ratings.

I don't know if I want to go as far as Gumble because these dudes are making 5 million a year

but race does play a factor in the NBA, one need only to look at the dress code that’s been enforced to see that

I ask you to log on to CBS sports on any Ken Berger article...read the comments below

some of the comments are stomach turning racist remarks.

Race is involved with the NBA whether we like it or not. It will always be there. You agreeing with Bill Simmons that players are idiots is not the point. That’s a completely subjective point of view. Where Simmons messed up was context. Along with, oh I don’t know…starting your article off by saying that he likes watching the NHL because they are filled with “good guys” a league that is 99% white…and then saying that a league that’s 75% black lacks “intellectual capital” is a bit suspect don’t you think?

I don’t think Simmons train of thought drifted in that direction…however it was DUMB thing to say whether you agree with it or not. Gumbel’s comments were also DUMB. I’m merely pointing out that Gumbel gets hammered for it, but Simmons escapes mostly unscathed because people think he’s goofy/fun loving Bill Simmons. It’s not right.

I guess you have a point about the "good guys" comment

but with the “limited intellectual capital” comment (what a brutal phrase by the way), I think it’s quite obvious he’s talking about professional athletes, not black guys. People reading more into it than that are either fixated on race themselves or just trying to stir up animosity.

cmon man indeed

you’re really playing the race card with the simmons comment?

by Rainbow skyline on Oct 24, 2011 10:03 AM MDT reply actions

Any way you interpret the Simmons comment, it was a poor choice of wording that leaves his column up for attack and – people like me I guess – take away from his entire column’s (which I quite enjoyed) point by nitpicking it as he uses some funky word choice.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
