Wouldn’t it be funny if the Nuggets traded Carmelo Anthony this season, without him inking an extension, and then signed him in the offseason as a free agent? Melo obvioulsy wouldn’t be too happy without the extension, but the Nuggets could do a “rental trade” and pick up some assets that would make Denver an even more complete team. What … this isn’t a videogame?

The Nuggets have failed for years to bring in a quality big man that would allow the team to slide Nene over to his natural power forward position and give the team a bigger body to match up against the Lakers and Celtics. Well, what if Denver had the right trade chip to bring in that big man with the trade of Melo?

With Eric Gordon out for a few weeks with the Los Angeles Clippers with a wrist injury, might the time be right to deal Melo as a rental player and then attempt to re-sign him in the offseason? Yes, Melo would lose out on the beefy extension, but the Nuggets could bring in Chris Kaman or perhaps another big man to make the team complete, re-sign Melo in the offseason and then go right for the prize in 2011-12 after the lockout.

I'm losing my mind. But that sure would be sweet wouldn't it?
