Melo won't be Traded before Camp

This is good news for Nuggets fans. If it's true, b/c obviously it should only be taken with a grain of salt but it looks like Denver's new FO isn't stupid and won't trade Melo. Basically, according to Broussard, Denver didn't like any offers (and they shouldn't) and are gonna try to convince Melo to stay with their play and potentially trading for another star (YAY!!!) and that Denver would only trade Melo for Lopez (and NJ wouldn't do that b/c without Lopez, Melo doesn't re-sign). Then he talks about how it's crazy not to trade Noah for Melo b/c it's not like you can pay Rose, Boozer, Melo and Noah. Finally (this is obvious) NY can't trade for him due to a lack of picks (and IMO, lack of enough young talent).

Also I think once Melo gets back with the team, he'll realize he truly doesn't want to go (if he ever wanted).

I'm not gonna lie, this made me so happy. I know you shouldn't listen to ESPN, but if Chris is writing about Melo potentially staying, it wouldn't help them get views/reads... so he wouldn't say it unless he was told this. Also this is pretty much saying what I've been (and some other Stiffs readers, while the majority panicked and lost faith in Melo/ Denver's FO competence) saying, Denver shouldn't be pressured into trading Carmelo b/c they won't get any value for him now and they have so much leverage b/c he won't leave that money on the table. Pretty much, you heard it here first (well actually in my other posts/comments) but Carmelo is going to stay in Denver for a while.

haha its funny how we all say that's BULLSHIT anytime ESPN says something negative

but we believe it when its something positive. Honestly if they work on a JR/Kmart trade first I think that could be good. Bringing in a player like Iggy for JR/Kmart may convince Melo to stay, but probably not. We shouldn’t make any moves in an attempt to placate Melo. Thats what the cavs tried to do and it backfired. IMO bringing in Iggy would be beneficial even if Melo left. Many people seem to disagree with that, but I think he’s an underrated talent. JR/Kmart expirings aren’t gonna get anybody who’s good and on a cheap contract, so we might as well fork over the money to get a great player and try and stay relevant despite losing our franchise player.

yea which pretty much seems to be the case

i’ve accepted it too. i just want to avoid rebuilding at all costs. i’ve blacked out the late 90 early 00 nuggets from my memory. i don’t need any relapses

What most people don't understand about Iggy is that...

…Philly isn’t actually desperate enough to give him up just for expirings. If they were, they’d have done it by now. Only way we possibly get him with only J.R. and K-Mart is if we take Brand’s contract on as well, which I wouldn’t mind doing, but idk if Nuggets management is committed to luxury hell for 3+ more years.

Isn’t that f*ing hilarous. That’s what I’ve been saying for the past month now and nobody wants to aknowlege that I’m right. Also: “NYK lack of draft pics hurts chances. Gotta get third team involved.” I was right about that too. Maybe I should just start charging you guys for my opinion since it’s pretty much always right.

Here's the deal

It’s highly, highly likely that we don’t land any player in free agencey this next summer as good as Iggy. The only guy I can think of that would be close would be Marc Gasol, which would be the best case scenario. But if we have the chance to land a player of Iggy or Gasol’s caliber via trade then you take it first chance you get because of the reason mentioned above, AND it would certainly help the team now as well as in the future. It’s good for the team and it’s a bonus if it helps Melo stay.

Forget Ellis or Iggy I say ….. let’s go young with Damion James and T.Will and a bit of a youth movement. Take some risks , but never jeopordise the future. They don’t make very much money and are assets to boot. It’s about what I like to call – team building.

Forecast , but don’t overeach with projects. Get yourslef solid players with some upside at reasonable rates and be patient. Don’t overpay older 3rd tier players that aren’t going to take you anywhere. I’ve got a bunch of great team building rules I came up with that should work wonders for this team. I’ll probably fax them over to the GM or send huim and email about it.

by strange-brew on Sep 21, 2010 6:34 PM MDT reply actions

Damion James and T-Will isn't jeopardizing the future?!

They’ve never stepped onto the court! That’s 10x more risk than picking up Ellis or Iggy, not to mention they’re still pretty young too.

Front office is playing it right

Key is trading for a star before we have to trade Melo. Hope it works.

+1

Get something REAL for K-Mart and lets see how Melo feels then.

Why Jamison?

He’s really not worth getting. He looked like he lost a couple of steps the second he went to Cleveland.

Chris Andersen could be in a porno with his 'stache. Too bad he still wouldn't know how to box out.

Just like the way he’s nothing like anyone else on the Nuggets roster and he is soo young.

by adamlouis on Sep 22, 2010 1:27 AM MDT up reply actions

I am totally behind trying to pick up a piece in order to keep Melo

But I would only make the deal if Melo agrees to sign the extension immediately after. The last thing in the world we need is another contract on the books who makes no sense to us if Melo isn’t here.

Just ask Melo, ‘if we can get “XYZ player for ABC assets,” will you sign the extension?’ If he says yes, make the deal. If not, pass.

by TChizza on Sep 21, 2010 10:38 PM MDT up reply actions

As I keep saying

Speculation causes us to get upset…..as Chizza can tell you I was close to jumping off a bridge a couple days ago.

That being said….I’m starting to believe that the Nuggets just plain aren’t going to get anything close to what they want for Melo.

i wouldn't trade Noah either

He is a young productive, passionate, active and healthy CENTER. Would love to know which GMs question this.

by love4nuggets on Sep 21, 2010 10:29 PM MDT reply actions

I bet a lot would

I love Noah as much as the next guy, think about it. Which would you rather have for the next 5 years, Noah, Rose and Boozer or Melo, Rose and Boozer?

Personally, I'd rather have Noah, Boozer and Rose

Carmelo doesn’t give a hoot about D.

I'd probably agree.

In a perfect world I’d take Noah, Melo, Rose out of that foursome but obviously that’s not a choice.

NY or bust

Melo is gone like the wind. He will go to NY and will not accept a trade unless its to the Big Apple. He holds the cards by not signing any extension offered to him by another team and opt out after next year if traded. He was in Ny last week with Amare at Jay Z’s concert and stated:
Source at oak1: Fat joe…“We need you in NY with amar’e you coming?…melo-”yeah"…crowd goes nuts…#we’llsee.
Hope all you want Nuggets, but you’ll have to settle for for either Gallinari or Randolph and Curry’s expiring contract, Walker, Fields and a future 1st pick 3 years away. If you don’t take it, he leaves you with nothing after the season.
He already turned away NJ.

What the fuck do you expect him to say?

He walks away and we get nothing and he gets a fraction of the cash and a joke of a team. He’s not that stupid, and if he is, well then peace!

by love4nuggets on Sep 21, 2010 10:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Statement

Yea but when the media or Nuggets asked him if he was staying in Denver he never said yes, or he’ll have no comment. But when asked if he wanted to come to NY he always says yes. This implies a lot into his thinking. You gotta come to the realization, he does not want to be in Denver anymore. He does have the right not to sign with another team’s extension offer when traded, so all the teams will be leary of trading for him unless they have him sign. He if says no, then he will sit out his contract if not traded to NY or Chicago. My guess is he’ll sign with NY and the Nugs will have to settle w/ what they give them or he walks with the nugs getting nothing.
By the way, Fat Joe who is one of Melo’s best friends along with Amare and Paul is on NY’s payroll, public realtions…….

by Al H on Sep 22, 2010 10:50 AM MDT up reply actions

Then fraction of the cash it is...

along with a pathetic go-nowhere team. That’s why I hope the Nuggets stand pat. These “stars” are like a virus and need to learn something about who runs this league. In fact I believe Lebozo has already learned about fan sentiment and what it means to a player’s popularity and brand opportunities.

If Melo’s gone at the end of the season, there’s still a lot of talent and flexibility to work with at that point. Not the end of the world. Not amazing, but not the end of the world.

It’s starting to look to me like he is only interested in being a one-and-doner with all this NYK obsession.

Done and Done

thats all the evidence I need. I mean….how much more CONCRETE can you get than this…..

…..man….Fat Joe with Melo and Amare at a Jay-Z concert. wow…..I was hoping in vain this whole time. This CLINCHES it. Cant get any more definitive.

Fuck yes.

This is the news I wanted to hear. This is BY FAR the best plan, BUT it’s only going to work if you go through with it! What we definatly can’t do is not trade for another star player because that won’t convince Melo to stay and then we’re screwed. If he sees us making moves, AND we have a great season and make a deep playoff run there’s no way he’s going to bolt for NY. But again, this means do or die for the front office in that they must move K-Mart and JR (or Nene), for a big time player. It seems all or nothing at this point.

Agree

I think every trade idea that has something to do with Iggy coming in a trade either means a good future without Melo, or a GREAT future with Melo & Iggy.

So, I’d say it’s pretty obvious that we should be pushing to get Iggy

by adamlouis on Sep 22, 2010 1:32 AM MDT up reply actions

I really think

The most important move would be for a C. Iggy would be awesome but we need to fill that big hole somehow. Any ideas?

by love4nuggets on Sep 22, 2010 7:39 AM MDT up reply actions

With Iggy we would have to bring in Brand

No he’s not a C, and he is undersized, but he can still rebound as good as anybody the Nuggets have. Here’s the problem I have, why did we wait til now to decide this is what we were going to do? Why couldn’t we have traded K-Mart and JR this summer when the Pacers were looking for cap relief for Troy Murphy? I guess Murphy’s contract does expire after this year, but it might have been enough for Melo to sign the extension. I can’t really think of any other big men besides Andres Biedrins that are on teams looking for cap relief, so it seems the Warriors and 76ers are probably our best bets.

Yeah I hear ya

was hoping there was something better that I was missing. What happened to Brand? He used to be effing awesome. When is the human-looking Gasol a FA?

by love4nuggets on Sep 22, 2010 5:37 PM MDT up reply actions

Injuries to brand, Gasol is restricted FA next year

Brand ruptured his Achilles in 2007, separated his shoulder in 2008. He played about a full season last year but he was a shell of his former self. I wouldn’t give very good odds to him ever being as good or close to pre-2007 Brand again.

Marc Gasol is a restricted FA next year. I have no clue if Heisley (Grizz owner) would really match a huge contract but he might after dumping all that money on Gay in trying to build a winner. Hard to say at this point. If the new CBA does depress contracts values/shave off years though, it’s probably a decent bet he would.

by TChizza on Sep 22, 2010 11:09 PM MDT up reply actions

Thanks

Huh. When I lived in L.A. and the nuggets kept getting the first-round bounce, I used to pull a little for the Clippers out of pure Laker-hate. Man, Brand was a beast. Too bad about those Injuries.
I kind of figured as much about Heisley. I think our best bet is to let Chauncey take over any and all “blockbuster” trade negotiations to infuse a little of that finals MVP veteran charm. I think Melo is most afraid of Chauncey in his ear at this point. Haha

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
