Nuggets Sign Melvin Ely

Seven-year NBA veteran Melvin Ely will join the Nuggets, according to agent Byron Irvin. Ely, who has career averages of 5.6 ppg and 3.7 rpg, is about to sign a non-guaranteed contract with Denver, which would become his sixth team in the league. "This is a great opportunity for Melvin and he's ready for the challenge," Irvin said. HoopsHype.com

I don't like this signing... he's a scrub and is worse than Mbenga and might be as bad as Tacos.... at least it's not guaranteed... I'd rather the 13th spot goes to a younger center... I bet he gets cut and if he doesn't then he won't ever play... I guess this means we didn't sign DJ anyways, which is annoying

Beat me to the Punch!

I was about to post this. I agree with you that this is a bad signing, i don’t like it. The best thing is that it is ungarunteed. Correct me if i’m mistaken, but didn’t K-Mart and this Ely guy have a bit of a argument and k-mart threw and elbow at him a few seasons back?

Other posters trashed the possibility of signing Harrington until the Nugs signed him

and now suddenly Harrington is called a great signing by all

Ely is a good signing for what it is. I’ve got no problem. You’re talking 13man and 5th big on a non-guaranteed contract.

He’s actually delivered a little something to the NBA in his time as opposed to Mbenga the posters allstar wannabe. But neither are world beaters or really even signings of note.

If it makes you feel better...

I still think Harrington is a bad signing. But we have him now so we have to do the best we can with the current situation.

As far as Ely, I think this will have zero impact on the Nuggets. I don’t believe he’ll make the team and even if he does, he plays maybe 4 minutes a game. Non-guaranteed contract though so there’s no downside to the signing. I’ve given up on Ely being a useful NBA player about 2 years ago.

Nah, I've held true that Harrington was a very good and safe signing

I just get a laugh at those drinking the ESPN Kool Aid and trashed and trashed and trashed Harrington… until the Nugs signed him. And then it was 180 degree change.

Anybody who trying to make him the 2nd coming of Karl Malone is being foolish. But Harrington filled a critical need on the Nuggets; that of a legit 6th man that can play SF & PF. As a 6th man, Harrington has been one of the best in the league for a long time. Myself and 1 other were proposing signing Harrington at least a good 2 weeks before the Nugs rumor came out. But again anybody who tries to make Harrington out for anything more than he is (that being a hugely skilled 6th man) is making a gi-normous error.

I agree with you, Ely will have no impact on the team but you lose nothing with the non-guaranteed contract. He very briefly had a little something; give him a shot. And if he hasn’t regained it then ya cut him loose.

So the latest now is Cousins, 2 expiring contracts and a future 1st for Melo… hmmm.

I'd sign the papers right now if that's a legit offer.

I agree with Monkfish, DMC > Favors. I’d actually say DMC >> Favors. I’d try and squeeze another asset or two out of Sacramento, like another future first and Hassan Whiteside or Omri Casspi or Jason Thompson or make them take Bird’s contract too but I could live with the deal as is.

Sacramento actually doesn’t have to send any expirings if they don’t want to, they can literally absorb Melo’s entire contract just by trading DMC. I wouldn’t say no to saving almost $14M (plus luxury savings so like basically $27M) right off the bat. I’m just guessing Sacramento doesn’t want to take on that high of a 2010 payroll, but it’s an option.

Where did you hear this about Cousins?

If that’s the deal I’d probably take it just because I’m bannanas over Cousins.

Wow he's terrible

I was just looking at his per 36 averages , it’s really really bad. He can’t shoot straight or block shots. It just proves that having a near 7 foot frame can usually get you some money in the NBA

True

Back when Pat Riley was wrapping up his time with the Lakers he talked about coaching his “dream” team where the entire starting 5 would be 6’9" to 6’10" and all have diverse skills.

Definitely one of the reasons being just because you’re a footer it doesn’t mean you can play, it just means you’re tall.

Cousins is good,

but he’s no Melo. We can make this trade, but we still can’t expect to be contenders for a few years at best.

If we get Cousins, I hope we also look into trading Chauncey and K-Mart and getting younger. Can’t half-ass a rebuilding process.

FINALLY!

I’m happy the front office has decided to sign some good talent to keep Melo on the team. Ely, with his marginal ability to stand around and breath, will certainly make Melo realize he needs to stay in Denver.

Denver, the city Melo has descibed as, “Totally different from what I’m used to,” and “everything moves so slow there, there’s nothing to do there,” (I’m paraphrasing here) is not what Melo is used to. For a guy like Melo, who hails from the East Coast, Denver is NOT where he has Ever Wanted to be. He rationalized that his going 3rd in the draft was good for him because he could focus on his game, since there’s nothing else to do. I love that Melo has helped the team these past years, however as these rumors fly, and he looks to be mulling his options, I have the distinct feeling Melo is finished, “working on his game”

Yeah, it kinda looks like they're just shuffling their feet looking busy with training camp stuff until they decide who they want to pull the trigger on with Melo

All parties are right and doing everything in their best interest; but looks like it boils down to a game of chicken.:

Melo wants to play for New York

Denver doesn’t want to trade Melo to New York

Team don’t want to give fair value in a trade for Melo unless he signs an extension with them

Melo wants to sign the extension because of concerns about the upcoming CBA

Melo doesn’t want to sign an extension with any other team except NY

Melo’s fallback strategy is he can do nothing, walk as a FA, sign with NY in a smaller CBA structure and make up the lost money with a boatload of Madison Ave cash through worldwide advertising.

I’ll be curious to see who blinks first.

Melo is just following through on the terms of the contract he signed.

Short Arm Stan should appreciate that since he follows the pattern of stringing people along and leave the twisting in the wind when their contracts are coming to a conclusion (Karl last year, WRex during the summer).

According to the Mavs blog the Nuggets "supposedly" have spoken to Ike Diogu's agent

I keep waiting for him to develop but so far he’s been a big disappointment.

If the Nugs signed him for the minimum I’d be fine with it; give him a chance and see if he suddenly “gets it” in Denver.

I have a question....how is this signing any different than signing shelden williams.

I got ripped for saying how stupid it was to sign him…especially so early in the offseason when other viable bigs were still available. So now when its Melvin Ely its ok to call him a “scrub”.

*Note: I do agree he is a scrub….but so is SHELDEN!

by GottaLoveMelo on Sep 22, 2010 9:56 AM MDT reply actions

Melvin Ely is 32

Shelden might have some upside to what little he’s done on the court in the big leagues so far, largely based on expectations on his decent college career just a few years ago, but Melvin Ely most definitely is what he is.

by Artimus Mangilord on Sep 22, 2010 10:28 AM MDT up reply actions

Shelden Williams is poop.

His biggest issue is he has hands made of stone. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a professional athlete with hands as bad as his. He’s the Clifford Franklin of the NBA. And his lateral movement is surprisingly bad. I loved him at Duke but he’s really been exposed in the league.

by TChizza on Sep 22, 2010 10:48 AM MDT up reply actions

You're right in questioning these signings; really none of them are any signings of value

Ely had a little bit of success but that’s it.

Shelden has been a huge nothing but teams don’t want to give up on him because he was so good in college.

Same with Diogu, he was very skilled and a very big disappointment.

It’s really perception; if you’re signing these guys for end of benchers and “hey let’s see what happens” then it’s ok. But if you’re signing any of these guys to be a key 4th big; especially when bigs #2 & #3 have health issues, then signing these guys is at best a huge risk.

I agree with you 100 percent.

“if you’re signing these guys for end of benchers and "hey let’s see what happens" then it’s ok.” exactly. which is why I didnt understand why Shelden was one of the first players we signed. I believe he was signed before Harrington.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
