Some Non-Carmelo Trade Ideas

Now with all this BS talk about Carmelo wanting to be traded and all these horrible offers, I thought I'd remind the rest of the NBA fans (and some Denver fans) that the Nuggets do have the assets to improve the team via trade. So here are some trade ideas (a lot of these have been talked about before)

1.
Kenyon Martin, JR Smith and a second for Andris Biedrins and Monta Ellis

or Kenyon for Biedrins and Gadzuric

Why?

Denver: Cash in some expiring deals for two talented (but overpaid) players. Not only does this solve the obvious size issue, but it also gives Chauncey and Melo a legit 2nd scoring option and he can play both guard positions effectively. A line up of Chauncey, Monta, Melo, Harrington and Nene is explosive prob the highest scoring team in the NBA.

GSW is in firesale mode and would probably jump at the chance of trading both Ellis and Biedrins for expirers. JR would actually be a good stop gap fit in GSW and would let Curry have the ball more.

2.

Kenyon Martin, JR Smith for Elton Brand and Andre Igoudala

Why?

Denver: Same as above, but Iggy is more of a jack of all trades type player. He might not be a good shooter but imagine him as a Dhantay Jones type player with offensive skill and playmaking abilities. Brand is a little short for a big man but he makes up for it with strength and skill. He might be one of the worst paid players in the NBA but maybe he could have a bounce back year. This would be a high risk high reward type move for Denver.

Philly: They'd essentially be starting over and giving over the franchise reigns to Evan Turner. JR is a much better fit next to him and is expiring. Pretty much it gives Philly a chance to truly rebuild with Turner.

3.

Kenyon Martin, Ty Lawson, JR Smith and 2 firsts for Chris Paul and Emeka Okafor

Why?

Denver: CHRIS freaking PAUL. Also Okafor would add some much needed size. I think Chauncey could definately play SG next to Paul for 15 minutes a game (spend like 13 other minutes playing PG with CP on the bench).

New Orleans: Honestly they only do this if they know they won't make the playoffs this year and Paul demands a trade. I'm going to be realistic and I know this would only happen during the deadline and if other factors are in play, but a kid can dream right?

4.

JR Smith and a first for Xavier Henry, Darrel Arthur and Hasheem Thabeet

Denver: Exchange JR for a less explosive but smarter version of himself in Henry. Also Henry would be on his rookie deal for 4 years so it'd be a cheap investment. Thabeet is shipped to Denver to help with size and Ujiri might want to bring in some African blood. Arthur is a filler (can be replaced by who ever).

Memphis: Realize Thabeet is a bust and just cut ties (they offered him and OJ Mayo for Ellis). Heisley is being an idiot and pretty much ruined any potential relationship with Henry (and any rookie) so they might as well trade him.

Some other names to watch... Jason Thompson, Chris Kamen, David West, Marcin Gortat and Nazr Mouhammad.

Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

Golden State in firesale mode?

Dude do you even follow basketball? They have rich new owners with a shiney new toy and want to build a winner. Joe Lacob loves Melo and is not trying to unload salary at all. Golden State already is around $15M under the cap for next year, is one of the few teams that makes a profit and has a bright future. You are way off base if you think they are like a Memphis, New Orleans or Sacramento, teams that are all hurting for cash and have bleak futures. Come to think of it, seems like Denver is one of the teams that is in the Firesale mode. Get your facts straight and trade Melo to us!

Why would Memphis do that?

You’re trading your current lottery pick and last year’s #2 overall pick for a headcase who’s an expiring contract. I can’t even imagine a universe in which that would happen. Even if you think Thabeet sucks after a year (which he does), you don’t just wash your hands of the #2 pick in his second year without at least getting back some sort of value. If you’re a Nuggets fan, would you even trade Ty Lawson straight up for JR Smith if was on another team? Not to mention if you’re a Memphis fan, would you even want JR Smith in the same area code as your youngsters?

On a side note, I think Nuggets fans need to realize what JR Smith’s value is right now, which is basically zero. He’s an absolute headcase with a history full of immaturity or downright stupidity and he’s having more issues this offseason. He’s getting into Spreewell, Rider territory with his off-court issues. He is literally just an expiring contract in terms of value. You could replace his name with Nazr Mohammed in terms of value (a $6M expiring) and nobody around the league would bat an eyelash.

Unless some team goes into complete firesale mode (and I mean the seats in the stands need to be torn up and sold mode), Martin/Smith offer very little without us throwing in multiple picks (we’ve been down this road before), cash, and probably assets we don’t have (Lawson is quite literally the only cheap young asset we have) and even then our return will only be for a good but not great player on a slightly palpable contract. The only other option we have is taking a huge risk on an otherwise immovable contract (ie. Elton Brand, Gilbert Arenas, Richard Hamilton).

JR is working on his golf game so he can enter the pro's next season. He knows what's coming.

I don’t see Chris Paul and Chauncey on the same team. You may have to keep Ty and send CB packing.

Actually I could see CP3 & Billups together

For all of Billups hard work he still ultimately is a combo guard… SG skills in a PG body. You’d need some size coming off the bench; but CP3 & Billups together would generate a lot of offense.

I think Ty would have to be, and should be traded if you got CP3. Ty is speed, will prove himself to be a starting PG, but he’s small. Ben Gordon is small but he’s a pure shooter so you can be creative with him. Ty is a PG or nothing and I can’t see him long term being a backup PG unless he flames out as a starter.

Monta Ellis?

Why do you like this guy?
He’s a volume shooter and can’t even shot beyond 20 ft.
No thanks on Ellis or Brand.
Also remember you can’t just put three scorers on the floor at the same time. It does NOT work. Team chemistry won’t be there and the defnese will suffer.

Have you ever noticed how much harder a guys plays on defense when he gets a few shot or feels that he is part of the offense? When you get three scorers on the floor at the same time, someone(s) has to defer (means they will be less engaged on the defensive end.) If you have ever played, you will know this.

I saw some argument posts a week or so ago about Biedrins & Ellis essentially replacing Iverson & KMart

If you’re looking for a Big with limited basketball skills and can’t stay healthy + an undersized SG who has to control the ball, take a lot of shots and not make his team mates better… then I’d say Biedrins is a fit for KMart and Ellis is a fit for AI.

I actually really like that analogy

I’ll say that Biedrins and K-Mart play very, very differently but it’s not a bad on-the-fly assessment.

by TChizza on Sep 2, 2010 4:10 PM MDT up reply actions

Agreed, they're different types of players but both have comparable limitations

KMart brings athleticness and a little attitude which helps on defense
Biedrins brings height which helps on defense
But both are very limited in basketball skills (offense, passing), both have had continued & consistent health problems and both are a salary cap drain due to their high salary and inability to stay healthy.

Trade #1 – Really Stale Scenario
Trade #2 – Almost Just as Stale Scenario
Trade #3 – Slightly Less Stale than #1 & 2
Trade #4 – Is a new scenario but not realistic. You don’t give up on a big after 1 year. You can’t teach height, a true Footer gets patience. Besides if Thabeet is such a bust why would the Nugs want him?

Let’s get some creativity in our trade scenarios. Let’s stop re-cycling the same old stuff no matter how attached we are of them.

Here goes nothing

1. Cleveland – JR Smith, cash + 2011 first for Anderson Varejao.

Post-apocalypse Cleveland is screwed. Unless Dan Gilbert really is as stupid as he sounds in his incoherent ravings to Lebron and is serious about winning a title before Miami, he’ll realize the smartest thing to do is to explode the team as soon as possible. That means moving Varejao, Jamison, Gibson, and possibly Mo Williams as soon as possible. Varejao isn’t a sexy basketball player but he plays good defense, rebounds, hustles, and knows his limitations as an offensive player (ie. putbacks). He can also pose as a legit center moving Nene to PF. His contract is pretty tough to swallow at 5/$42M but he’s 28 so we’ll be getting the remaining of his good years without too much drop-off at the end. The problem is he’s basically a less athletic but more solid version of Bird which makes him a little redundant.

2. Portland – Greg Oden, Rudy Fernandez for JR Smith, Lawson, 2011 and 2013 firsts

This just comes down to whether or not Portland is willing to cut bait with Oden and try recoup as many assets as possible now while he still has some trade value. Another injury this year and not only is his trade value near zero, he’s also a FA following the year. His injury history is well documented but when he does play, there’s no question he’s a difference-maker, especially on the defensive end. His per-minute numbers are incredible, but of course that’s dependent on if he can stay in the game and out of foul trouble. Portland would still have Camby and Pryzbilla manning the center position and it’s possible the lure of Lawson might be enough for Portland (along with acquiring what could be some pretty choice 1sts if we go in the tank). Fernandez is included in the deal for salary purposes if Portland really believes he’s never coming back. Otherwise they could just add Pendergraph and Cunningham to the deal. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of value the new GM there puts on Oden.

3. Portland – Billups and 2011 first for Miller, Bayless, and Babbitt

Basically we’re taking a step back going from Billups to Miller but we get younger and more depth with Bayless and Babbitt. Portland is getting into that mode where they want to compete for championships and not just acquire young assets so upgrading to Billups while acquiring a future asset makes sense at the cost of Bayless and Babbitt. One upside of this trade is with the acquisition of Bayless (if you believe in him), it’s then possible we can move Lawson to someone else while acquiring a useful piece. It’s also possible to combine deals 2 & 3 to form a Billups/JR/Lawson, 2011, 2013 firsts for Miller, Oden, Bayless, and Babbit deal.

4. Sacramento Kings – JR Smith, Ty Lawson and 2011 second for Carl Landry, Beno Udrih, Hassan Whiteside

Landry gives the Nuggets to the ability to field a very intriguing small-ball team with Nene/Landry/Melo/Afflalo/Billups and he’s cheaply signed for the next two years. We also get the mother of all scratch tickets in Hassan Whiteside. Sacramento gets Lawson who’s speed meshes well with Evans and allows Evans to play 2 guard at times during the game, lessening his workload. The Kings also get to shed themselves of Udrih’s contract giving them something insane like $30-35M in cap space next year. This would allow them to throw a ton of money at Horford next summer assuming he doesn’t re-up with ATL (he’s a restricted FA so they would have the right to match but they already owe a ton of money in future years). A Kings combo of Lawson/Evans/Horford/McCousins for the next decade? Yes please if I’m a Kings fan.

4A. K-Mart, Lawson, 2011 first for Landry, Thompson, Udrih, and Garcia

Basically same thing as previous trade but we sub K-Mart instead of JR and add in Thompson and Garcia. Thompson is intriguing as a big man but he’s been up and down. Garcia is a shooter but that’s about it. Sacramento gets even further under the next year by shedding Garcia’s iffy contract.

5. Charlotte Bobcats – JR, Lawson, 2011 first for Stephen Jackson and DJ Augustin

We get Capt. Jack and a backup point guard who may or may not be a capable starter in the league. I don’t think the Bobcats are sold on him and might be willing to trade PG/SG combos with us with the added first-rounder. Charlotte also gains a lot more flexibility in the future by shedding Jackson’s contract and the fact he’s not exactly young anymore. I just feel like JR Smith is the type of guy who would absolutely fall in line and play up to his ability with Michael Jordan staring him down on a daily basis (when he’s not golfing). MJ is still an absolutely dominant, alpha-dog personality and if he can’t get JR straight and playing his best basketball, nobody can.

I’m usually pretty subjective in my trades and feel value-wise all of these deals are possible from that standpoint. There’s obviously a lot of variables, many that are unpredictable or just unknown to fans, to account for when proposing trade ideas (direction of team, owner’s financial situation, how the team actually performs early in the season) but I don’t think anybody from either side of these trades would just hang up the phone if offered these deals. Then again, I might be completely wrong.

by TChizza on Sep 2, 2010 5:42 PM MDT up reply actions

ill give you credit

you definitely come up with unique trade scenarios. i’m not particularly fond of any of them but I guess that’s the reality of our situation now. The Varejao trade seems the best option even though it would further cripple us financially.

by skithebert on Sep 2, 2010 7:54 PM MDT up reply actions

I was actually just looking at Charlotte as a potential trade partner

In the event Melo actually stays and the Nugs are in contention and looking to make a deal at or near the trade deadline their trading partners likely will be teams with high cap numbers and are not succeeding. The AirCats look like a team that if they’re struggling they may be willing to trade some of their players for cap relief.
Boris Diaw and Stephen Jackson are 2 players I could see the Cats trade off for expiring contracts and a younger player or future 1st.

The others I think are less likely because in conference competitors (Blazers), the Kings have no need for JR or Ty (already below the cap & have a PG) and I just don’t see the Cavs giving up Big V… possibly anybody else on the roster but him.

Good analysis!!!

The Kings trades are completely dependent on whether or not they want Evans to be their full time PG. Personally I think the team, and Evans in particular, would benefit greatly from someone who’s able to handle and push the ball earlier in games just to lighten his workload a bit. Basically similar to Kobe/Lebron type sitations where there’s no question who gets the ball when there needs to be a score but there needs to be someone to ease some pressure off their star for the first 44 minutes of a game. In addition, Ty has shown that he’s a pretty good outside shooter now who is able to help space the floor a bit when Evans is running the show despite his small size. JR has to go in the trade just because the Nuggets can’t absorb that difference in salaries. Regardless, the trade is dependent on their expectations and usage of Evans as there’s no question he’s gonna be the perimeter star of that team.

It was pretty fun though trying to pick through rosters and looking for potential fits.

#3.

It would be billups for those guys + picks. Think about it this way, billups is perfect for portland, but if he was on the block there would be MANY suitors. Including the bobcats who own Erik Dampeir’s un-guaranteed contract. Now, por, or anyone would have to put out a better offer than Damp/Augistin/Hendo/picks.

Predicting firesales is where we can get value

I think Philly could be this years wizards and Iggy could be this years Jamieson/Butler. His contract is as bad as well…. the sixers salary situation I know its not as high as ours but at least we have good players making big money (except Kmart) but they have Brand and Iggy on long big contracts aswell as role players Lou williams and Andres Nocioni on bad contracts so for a team with a record like theirs its terrible. They know they dont have any chance untill Brand comes off really. So we could probably almost get Iggy for Kmarts expiring and a Future pick. Id hate for him to be like Jamison on Cleveland but it could work alright?
