Around SBN: Events Cause Mariners To Lose To Rangers

Things we need before the season starts

1) Get a decent GM like Griffin ( I like him more than Pritchard)

2)  Get Nene some counseling and tell that guy he is a BEAST and continually tell it to him till he absolutely believes it. If Nene plays tough we will be tough to beat even with the Lakers.

3) Hire an assistant coach who is good at defense (I am looking at you former Nuggets video coordinator Mike Brown you muppet looking S.O.B)

Star-divide

4)Then worry about trading KMart for a guy like Okafor or Biedrins.

Here is why I am on the Nene gravy train:

Nene is a beast

The only centers that are better than him are the untouchables (D12, Gasol, Bogut, etc…)

We have a big man who can shoot jump shots and FG’s, leads all big men in steals, and has great post moves.

Everyone complains about him passing the ball too much. Since when was that a bad thing. Denver’s stagnant pass-and-watch approach makes Nene look a lot worse than it is. If Denver had a semblance of set plays, where players actually cut to the rim, Nene’s passing would help so much. Remember Nene’s handoff pass to JR’s huge jam in the Western Conference Finals Game 4 against the Lakers?

He’s an above average defender, his only problem is that he is Denver’s only competent big man, and that makes it so much easier to defend him. When Birdman or Injured K-Mart is on the floor with Nene, the guy guarding Kenyon/Bird always cheated a bit towards Nene.

If someone would just cut to the goddamn basket when Nene starts his moves, it would clear things up for him to drop it off or finish it himself.

Nene has more skill that Amare Stoudemire, he just lacks the aggressive mentality...

someone (maybe Melo or Dantley or Billups) should sit down with him and tell him that he could 90% of the centers in the NBA and could average 20/10 if he was assertive… if that doesn’t work, tell him some BS about G-d needing him to score to help preserve something idk, but he’s religious and try to convince him lol….

by hvino on Aug 5, 2010 2:27 PM MDT reply actions

i just feel Nene is never given a chance

They throw the ball into Nene at the worst possible times. Nene ALWAYS gets going really early, but for some reason they go away from him.

I’m not saying Melo, JR, or Billups have huge egos, but those 3 are very confident in themselves (for good reason too). Those are 3 score-first guys, yes even Chauncey. And that was so often Denver’s line up for most of the game (Chauncey-JR-Melo-Kenyon-Nene). Even Kenyon demands his touches and his awful 20-footer. Nene is at the bottom of the food chain in terms of ball touches, and yet he is the most efficient with his touches by far. When Nene plays with TY Lawson or god forbid even AC, he gets involved a lot more.

When’s the last time we saw a denver player do the traditional drive to the rim and drop it off to the big guy for the easy lay in? NEVER.

Ty and Nene are going to become a great duo this season.

by jb22 on Aug 5, 2010 2:36 PM MDT up reply actions

I think if I recall correctly, Nene's play really declined when KMart went out...

I think he does best when he’s next to a good player at either PF or C… thats why getting someone like Biedrins or Okafor would help him so much

by hvino on Aug 5, 2010 3:32 PM MDT up reply actions

which makes sense, because Kmart is our second best big man

when Kenyon went out Nene was playing next to Petro. If Nene had a real competent second big man to play with (like a Bynum, a Noah, so on) he’d be even better

by jb22 on Aug 5, 2010 6:10 PM MDT up reply actions

Nene just looks like he has no confidence

The half-hearted jams, missed layups, passive defense (when playing superior centers) and most of all the unselfishness when he needs to assert himself just point to him being worried about something. I’m starting to think maybe his injuries throughout his career are starting to haunt him and affect his play. It sucks because I really think he’s a 20-10 guy.

by GoldenNugget on Aug 5, 2010 6:23 PM MDT reply actions

good point, he could just be scared to play intense b/c he's had so many injuries and doesn't want to miss more time (and if he's out, the Nuggets are done)

another theory is that he might not like bball that much (which is annoying b/c ppl with a huge passion for the game fail to play in the NBA and make millions for playing a sport as a career), think about it, he started playing when he was like 16 b/c he used to play soccer in Brazil and some scout convinced him to try bball, he immeadiately went pro in Brazil and caught the attention of NBA scouts and the Nuggets drafted him… he’s also very religous and said that he wants to retire early and open a church in Brazil (sounds like the next E:60 story)… so maybe he just lacks overall passion for the game

by hvino on Aug 5, 2010 6:44 PM MDT up reply actions

Or maybe he is scared of fouls

because there is no depth behind him. If he is out of the game, then who do the nuggets have?

by Monkfish on Aug 5, 2010 9:11 PM MDT up reply actions

When he actually dunks....

he throws it down! I love to see Nene dunk (not as much as Kenyon) but he dunks with authority

by GottaLoveMelo on Aug 6, 2010 11:06 AM MDT up reply actions

True

Very true. But there are times where he’s actually missed dunks because he doesn’t go up hard enough. Maybe it’s his knees or something.

Things we need?

Chris Andersen could be in a porno with his 'stache. Too bad he still wouldn't know how to box out.
Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy.

Meant to say "Things Nuggets should strive to do before the season"

Got too excited with the Nene highlights to re-word the title of the post.

by JR15 on Aug 5, 2010 7:04 PM MDT up reply actions

Well,

I agree on he defense, but I think Coach Karl needs to drill the phrase “you pass, you win” into the entire team. You know the team has a serious problem when Nene is the leading man in a game with 6 assists. I don’t have a problem with Nene passing, but I don’t see why Carmelo can’t get up to 4-5 assists in every game. If Chauncey doesn’t look to score, he should be looking to pass more.

assists

Honestly, if the offense was designed properly, there should be an assist on most baskets. If you have an offense based on movement away from the ball and passing, then most of your shots will come from people receiving a pass and shooting an open shot. If you have “random” offense, the shot just goes to whoever feels like shooting on that posession. A large amount of the inconsistency with the nuggets players, all of them, is the offense.

too many players on the Nuggets

have a tendency to defy authority

not necessarily in a bad way. Chauncey likes to do his own thing all the time, and it seems to work out for him.

JR, Kenyon, Melo, and Chauncey all have the ability to abort on a called play and improvise. And that’s 4 of our 5 on the court during crunch time. (Nene is obedient)

Trade that would turn it around

what we need going forward:

1. To resign Melo. Has to be number one priority
2. Get a true center who can protect the rim and get rebounds. Would allow Nene to move back to PF and increase his production dramatically
3. If possible get a sharp shooter from outside

This trade accomplishes all of these. We have to give up a lot but would get so much in return. Here it is:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2at2axl

First off we get chris paul. Great player obviously but i guarantee if we pull this off then Melo signs his extension that day. Automatically makes us the No. 2 in the west.

We have to take on Okafors terrible contract but we get rid of Kmarts at the same time. And Okafor is a serviceable center who can protect the rim and get rebounds.

We lose chauncey which sucks but he is getting older and showed in the playoffs last year he is no longer mr. big shot. Losing billups is a necessity cuz him and Paul could never share the same backcourt.

We get roy hibbert who is a really promising young big who could either start at center or come off the bench. Really helps us out.

Lose JR Smith and birdman but JR Smith isnt consistent enough and Birdman had a down year.

Works for the other two teams because Hornets desperately want to get rid of Okafor and Posey’s contracts. They also get some low post help which they need. Murphy and Balkman would both improve that team. Pacers get the veteran point guard they need and shed cap space. In a perfect world Kmart would get bought out and we could resign him on the cheap.

Our lineup would then be: Paul, Afflalo, Melo, Nene, Hibbert

Bench: Lawson, Kmart, Okafor, Harrington, Carter, Posey

Ideally we would get a shooter back in this trade or in another. I really really like our team if we can pull this off. Just my thoughts.

I am not really a fan

this team needs a playbook and tweaks to be serious contenders, not a complete overhaul.

by Monkfish on Aug 6, 2010 12:20 PM MDT up reply actions

i don't like this trade

Paul, Posey, Okafor

that’s 3 of the starting 5 in New Orleans. Conducting a NO-DEN swap doesn’t do much.

Hibbert is really limited, but he could develop into a decent player.

by jb22 on Aug 6, 2010 1:21 PM MDT up reply actions

That is not a Championship team

im thinking inception

im going to try and plant the idea into nene’s mind that he is a BEAST and that he is the best center in the league that should scream for the ball on every single play. I’m going to go into the third level of his dream and plant the idea. Hopefully, the plan does not backfire like it did on Marion Cotillard’s character

Thanks A-hole I didn't see the movie yet

By the way, playing around in people’s unconsious psyche is dangerous business. I just hope you know what you’re doing. Maybe watch the flic like 3 more times before you lobotomize our only healthy big.

Have you ever spoken with Nene

I have, at the six man jam. I’m not sure a lobotomy would make a difference. God would take care of him anyway.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
