SB Nation's Andrew Sharp writes one of the most comprehensive features on Carmelo Anthony that you'll see coming out of the blogosphere. Sharp talks all things Melo: his pending free agency, trade possibilities and the fishy @ihatekatstacks Twitter story making the rounds. This is a must read for Nuggets fans.

I'll save everyone the read: just another "Melo isn't as good as you think he is" article.

Which definitely has some merits on the face of it, but nothing that we haven’t heard already before.

“He’s closer to Amare Stoudemire than LeBron James or Dwayne Wade, statistically.”

“Carmelo, in his current form, just isn’t good enough.”

“He’s incomplete, […] that’s where he is.”

“Because of his flaws, the Nuggets relationship has failed, and both sides want a fresh start.” (citation needed)

He concludes by stating this:

“We already said that the question of whether Carmelo’s worth the risk implies that he’s not good enough now. Also implicit in that question: He could be. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be asking.”

So…great? What else haven’t we known?

Thanks as always for keeping us on the bleeding edge of Carmelo Anthony “will he or won’t he” news, Andrew, but there’s really nothing new here. Until I hear it or see it that he’s gone, I’m considering Melo a part of this team. That doesn’t mean that we can’t discuss trade rumors or ideas for replacements.

But “Melo has problems” has been done to death. Anyone who hasn’t been living under a Fox News cycle knows that Carmelo Anthony is a flawed superstar but a superstar nonetheless.

He is worth the risk.

In the end the article says that most teams in the league should be trying to get him and that he is worth the risk. I think.

I hadn’t even heard about the twitter fiasco. Offering a $5K bounty on someone’s head in a very public forum? How f’ing stupid do you have to be to do something like that? Amazing. And very disappointing. Wow. He must have borrowed some of JR’s stupid pills before he posted that.

Yes, he is worth the risk

That is why the author of that article answered the question “Should teams be trying to trade for Carmelo Anthony?” with a YES in what looks like bold and 40 point font. Did you get that far?

by Artimus Mangilord on Aug 31, 2010 5:33 PM MDT up reply actions

This is not what the article says at all.

It says that, IN SPITE OF all Melo’s off court crap, 75% of the NBA should absolutely go after this guy in case it ever fully “clicks” and “he get’s it”.

The article fully says that he’s worth the risk as well.

As for myself, I’m starting to waver in my support . . . I’m just starting to get tired of the crap.

Exactly Swats!!

I feel like reading news either way of Melo staying or leaving is unhealthy.
I don’t think management is dumb enough to just trade him before the season starts because he wants out. This team is still a playoff team. As the article said Kobe and Pierce wanted out for a while too.
I agree we need to get lucky and hope the KMart contract can get us a really good young player like M. Gasol. We should start worrying about if Melo gets traded closer to the Feb deadline.
I think JR is staying because we won’t be able to get rid of him. This may be a good thing because he could play out of his mind ( and …grow up…gulp!)in his contract year knowing he will get close to nothing once he is a free-agent.

I personally am okay with whatever happens.

1. Melo re-signs, stays for three years, the Nuggets use Kenyon’s expiring and JR Smith to rebuild around a big.
2. Melo re-signs and is traded. The Nuggets get back picks and filler (will definitely not get equal value), use Kenyon’s expiring and JR Smith to rebuild around a big.
3. Melo doesn’t re-sign and walks after another first round exit. The Nuggets use Kenyon’s salary vacancy, Carmelo’s salary vacancy and JR Smith’s to rebuild around a big.

Any of those situations is going to end up with the Nuggets being pretty bad in the short term, but set up to succeed in the next few seasons long term because of the massive cap space.

The question I think that nobody is asking that everybody should be is who do the Nuggets target in the draft in the next season or two (besides Harrison Barnes).

Swats.

by BeefySwats on Aug 31, 2010 2:09 PM MDT up reply actions

In order to get Barnes

We need to completely tank. I mean get some good young talent and just play them during the season. No Memphis crap, we need to be 12 win bad. Trade all our veterans for draft picks.
Problem with that approach is there is a lot of uncertainty when we know that right now we are pretty close to a championship if we get a defensive big and maybe a shooter from the bench for KMart.
Not worried about Ujiri, he is more of a figurehead for Kroenke and Bearup. Ujiri will suggest ideas, but they will be the decision makers.

Why is there no fanpost or main page post on the twitter incident?

Surely nobody believes that his twitter account was actually hacked (My name isn’t Shirley!). Even if you are of the viewpoint that someone with 5000 in cash hacked the twitter and started arguing with a person Melo already had a feud with, isn’t the incident worth discussing on an online forum with fans?

Note – I am making the assumption that Denver Stiffs is intentionally avoiding discussion (and deleting fanposts) of the twitter incident on this blog. If that is not true, ignore my comment.

There is a fanpost. I just hadn’t opened it because I had no idea wtf it was about from the title. I am not “connected,” I guess. Which is probably a good thing.

There's a FanPost up now...

…by Denver Stiffs reader “calvin brodus.” Both Nate and I were on a brief holiday when the Melo Twitter incident first broke and when we returned I read that Melo’s Twitter account had allegedly been hacked. I’ve since learned that the hacking story is suspect and the woman whom Melo allegedly put the $5,000 hit on is allegedly filing a police report against the Nuggets star.

I can’t speak for Nate, but given all the “allegedly’s” going on with this story, I would like to see more facts come in before commenting on it. Believe it or not, before I criticize Melo I like to get my facts straight!

Yeah I see the fanpost now. It was mostly last night that I was searching for one and couldn’t find it. Anyways, my expectation was not for you guys to immediately through up a scathing article on Melo or a defense of him, but I had just been looking for place to discuss the incident with Nuggets fans and was shocked (at least the last couple nights) that there was nothing on this site even mentioning it.

LIES!!! You just want Melo gone for a ham sandwich

But yeah, I think the whole hacked story is a cover for Melo’s screw up.

Here is something you can comment on. This Kat Stacks person (sic) is one class act.

Here are some of the pearls of wisdom straight from her mouth and into Twitter:

I have No mercy, No regrets, and No love.

I swallow cum like a pill & make you pay my next bill

Rubberband banks make a bitch booty bounce

When you catch his nut in your mouth I’ma need you to swallow it & shut the fuck up ’cause the next bitch will when you leave!

I wish my girl associates didn’t catch feelings for the niggas I fuck, HE’S NOT YOUR MAN HE’S COMMUNITY PROPERTY

I took the first one down as I saw some stuff stating the account was hacked. Probably jumped the gun since it seems people are actually interested in it.

It's a decent read, actually.

Is fair in its criticism of Melo and his “off court” decisions while saying that he’s still a hell of a player and definitely worth the risk.

by blooming rock on Sep 1, 2010 1:51 PM MDT reply actions

Here's my comment from that blog, FWIW.

Being one of Melo’s biggest supporters through his seven years in Denver . . . . . . despite his "Stop Snitching" video, pot in backpack incident, and DUI arrest . . . I do have to say that I thought Carmelo was maturing the past couple of years.

Yes I said thought.

This whole Kat Stacks Twitter thing and the way he’s allowing his WWW/CAA representation drag his name through the mud the past few weeks, I don’t get it.

Melo as a basketball player: smooth, deadly, powerful, clutch . . . and then there’s the inconsistent effort on D, monopolizing the ball in the half court sets, getting called for offensive fouls on the same plays over and over again, and just not quite having it click in many facets.

Again, I love Melo. If by some miracle he stays with the Nuggets, I will continue to love him and hope for "it" to click for him. But it’s been seven years, he’s had a lot of talent around him (people are acting like he’s on a poor team, not the case), and it just seems like he might not be the guy that can "lead" a team to a title. He can definitely win one, or several, but I think he needs to be the second option . . . unless something drastically changes and he grows up. I believe those slips off court have a corollary to those he makes on the court. Not . . . quite . . . there

by blooming rock on Sep 1, 2010 1:52 PM MDT reply actions

As an aside . . .

I would love for Melo to play on the Nugs this season, because I think they have a very good team, still capable of competing with the Lakers and being the No. 2 seed in the west.

If this happens, maybe he recognizes that he’s got a pretty good thing going here . . . maybe he doesn’t. I just hope the Nuggets don’t cave and trade him from pressure to do so from media types and WWW/CAA. He’s under contract for this year, only trade him if things truly are beyond repair and you get good return. Probably won’t get “equal” market value, but some of these trades being proposed are just ridiculous.

STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
