Denver Stiffs membership policy

Andrew and Nate,

I know it's early, but if there is going to truly be a movement to trade Melo, I am going to request that you guys lock down posting ability as much as possible.  We'll have enough to do arguing amongst ourselves, without having to deal with hundreds of posts from fans of other teams proposing that the Nuggets should trade melo for the bottom of their roster and some second round picks.  It's already made the "Melo'd Out" post essentially unreadable.  I've no desire to wade through a bunch of outsiders to try to have a discussion with the known and respected members of this site.

I don't know what options you have, but anything you can do to improve the situation would be appreciated.  Rumors that I'm changing my screenname to "trollssuck" are completely unfounded and without basis.  I have never said I do not like trolls.

Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

24 hour waiting period is something many blogs enforce

it means that those who only want to post reactionary comments that are meant to piss people off will be driven away and those that actually want to post good comments looking for debate or conversation will be willing to wait and then comment the day after. I disagree that anyone who is from another teams blog should be banned from posting because many do bring in new perspective and analysis.

I like the 24 hour idea

and I like posters from other teams that have good input. I don’t want to see the site innundated with suggested trades from 29 other teams that have no basis. We are good enough at coming up with potential trades on our own, and don’t need to read a Washington fan try to explain why it would be good for Denver to trade Melo for Arenas. Or a Celtics fan explain why it would be good to trade him for Rasheed Wallace. The number of posts has gone way up, and if it doubles or triples from where it is now, it will essentially make finding the good posts impossible.

You don't want to see a Celtics blogger say that?

I think it would be the funniest thing I would have ever heard! I see where you are coming from but most posts seem like reasonable comments that are being realistic. I have started just skipping over them when the become repetitive(fast ZZZZZZ). Still this is tame compated to Lakers trolls that are bound to come through(LAZERZ RULLZ BIG CITYY U SMALLZ WE RULLZ).

As a Celtics Fan

I would to be on records as saying I can’t pretend to imagine a package that Ainge could put together to acquire to Carmelo. There’s only one young player, and that’s Rondo and the C’s are obviously going to build around him as they retire KG, Pierce, and Allen. They can’t offer much in way of good draft picks either, since they’re likely to win 55 games each season for at least two more years. If the Nuggets want cap space, they’ll get that in boatloads by not trading him in the first place.

The Celtics just can’t get it done.

Nick Swisher is handsome.

Censorship can be a slippery slope

Pretty soon anyone who isn’t all sunshine and rainbows will be excluded and all you’ll be left with is one big circle jerk. Yes, some of those “we’ll only have to give up this crap and that crap for Melo” posts were annoying. But I agree that as long as they don’t involve personal attacks, they are free to express their opinions.

Maybe then

We could do a thumbs up/thumbs down method? As in enough thumbs down and the comment shows as unreadable(we’re not cool enough to adopt Rome’s triple U). Maybe we just call it Un-rec’d. If all the stiifs gang up on the floating trolls we Un-rec them into obscurity. It’s blog democracy.

Not referring to you

But honestly don’t ever remember seeing you here before. Not trying to turn this into North Korea. This is a site for nuggets fans, essentially a private club. The courts have consistently ruled that private clubs have the right to censor their membership. Private clubs can be all male, all catholic, all below 5 feet tall, all just about anything. I may agree or disagree with the rules for membership, or of the aim of the club entirely, say the KKK, but they have the right to exist and the right to censor the membership of the club. Andrew and Nate occasionally censor comments, and for all I know they also remove some members. They could boot me tomorrow and that would be that.

This is not a "private club"

anyone can join, there is no secret password, you don’t even need to be a fan of the team, just as long as you are polite and don’t come here to troll, and are respectful in your thoughts then there should be no problems or altercations. You essentially want to not allow “outsiders” to come because you don’t want the displeasure of reading through them all, well too bad because as long as they are not being rude or spiteful, they should be allowed to post it. I know a thing or two about coming close to being banned, and I mainly post in the game threads but have taken a keen on posts and whatnot as experience has grown.

Sorry, but if you want to turn this into a dictatorship than go root for the Shanghai Sharks.

1 Hr waiting period

And liberal use of the Ban-Hammer. 24 is too long for respectful fans of other teams. It really sucks. I wanted to post on both Cle’s site and the Aircats’ site and I had to wait a whole fucking day, just awlful.

by Monkfish on Aug 27, 2010 5:21 PM MDT reply actions

Waiting peroid is a rediculous idea!

Seriously guys, Denver Stiffs doesn’t need to change, its fine the way it is! Sure we are getting a lot of visitors from other teams right now, but its a free world, and they have the right to voice their opinion here. They are just interested in the Melo situation, as all of us here are. in a few weeks time when this all dies down we can go back to the usual, loyal readers of this site, but until then, i’ll say welcome to Stiffs everyone, feel free to say what you want, but please be constructive with your comments and no trolling! Welcome.

I like some kind of an idea to that extent

Maybe have particular posts that only we can talk on. This is EXACTLY why you’ll havent seen me for a while. I have been reading (and vomiting) over the last month or so. I as you all know am a huge JR fan. However i will say this, if Melo is to be traded, it should be WITH JR. That would give them the best chance of getting something of some value back.

I realize..

that there is a tight knit group of people here who have established a community and want to keep it to Nuggets fans/knowledgeable fans. However, I’d also say that this is an opportunity for DenverStiffs to pick up a lot of fans that might not have come if not for the Melo talk, myself included. It’s a great opportunity to build on the community that’s already in place despite the trolling (also, maybe myself included, I don’t know) which will end up passing after Melo’s gone or the talk dies down. Regardless, I’m a big fan of the site now which can’t be a bad thing for the website.

Denver Stiffs is welcome to all...

While I sincerely appreciate the point of view served up here by loyal Stiffs reader ThrowItDownBigManThrowItDown, Denver Stiffs is a member of SB Nation and is therefore open to all. Personally, I think it’s great for this site to have as many readers as are out there offering as many varying opinions on all-things-Nuggets as possible.

As long as the opinions are thoughtful and respectful, I say the more the merrier. But Nate and I truly appreciate those who have been with us since Day One and will make a better effort to feature their commentary if written as FanPosts that meet this site’s quality standards. We don’t want our most ardent supporters and long-time readers to feel squeezed out of the conversation.

chiming in

I’ve really appreciated the diversity in perspectives that have come in recently, and even some of the trash talk. I would gladly put up with the occasional fuck-faced idiots, if it means I get to hear some of the well-intended counterpoints from other fanbases, as I have read recently. Welcome!

Having said that, there has to be a way to control the conversations so that they don’t go on for a million posts, across a million different tangents. I don’t mind too much, but if there is a problem that needs to be addressed, it is the need to sift through ten conversations to get to the one you’re interested in. It’s like being at an elbow to elbow packed house party, and trying to get to a conversation on the other side of the house.

To be clear, I’m absolutely fine with the crowd, and I love the diversity, but I wonder if there is another way to organize it.
