Chauncey Billups: Anthony has not said he doesn't want to be a Nugget

Chauncey Billups: Anthony has not said he doesn't want to be a Nugget

Fri Aug 20,2010 3:45 PM ET By Kurt Helin canthony_billups.jpgThe buzz around the league is that Carmelo Anthony has one foot out the door in Denver, and the other foot is planted in a starters block. On the other hand, his own words came off as a man conflicted. A man who hasn't decided what direction to go.

Chauncey Billups has been talking with 'Melo to, and tells the Denver Post this is not a done deal.

"He has not once said he didn't want to be a Nugget," Billups said. "He loves Denver, he loves the Nuggets, he loves the fans. So, it's a part of him that I'm sure is eating him up a little bit because he's taken all this press and he's not said one thing to support or to not support what they are saying. He's just trying to enjoy his summer, chill out and he's in every story. Honestly, I think that the publications and things are out of control."

Billups also doesn't really know what Anthony is going to decide.

"I've had some very direct conversations with him that I would never share that with anybody else," said Billups this morning from his hotel room in Spain as he and the U.S. basketball team prepares to face Lithuania Saturday night in Madrid.

"But I think, for me, I try to just speak to him and just kind of help him and see if he needs my help in this whole process because it is a big decision for him. It's at a crucial time for him in his career and his life. It's a huge decision. It's something that's a big, big deal."

Nothing is happening fast here. As we said, Denver doesn't even have a general manager right now, and once they hire someone he will want to sit down with Anthony and his agent. And even then we're probably not going to see anything happen.

Backroom chatter in the NBA -- particularly in August -- tends to be where speculation gets let off the leash and runs wild. So few things talked about this time of year happen as predicted. Neither side in this talk is in a position to have to rush. That time will come, if Anthony is leaning toward leaving Denver will have to make a move by the trade deadline.

But that is six months away. Which is an eternity from now. So put your feet up and make yourself comfortable, we'll be talking about this for a while.

I think he does want to play for Denver...This season

Then just wait and see at the end of the season. If we get out of the first round and into WCF of better and look good for the future he will resign otherwise he would sign somewhere else. But the FO doesnt want that to happn Its either now or never for them to know what hes doing. Which is fair enough. They both just want the best scenario for them. So its either a huge gamble on the FOs behalf or a safe way out that would forever beg the question What if?

I dissagree

if he doesnt sign the extention he is going to cost himself a shit ton of money I would say he wants the cash(who can blame him?) not that he wants to be a nugget. IMHO if the cba wasnt about to expire he would be gone that is the only think making this hard for him. he either needs to sign and stay before the season starts or we need to deal him and move on. Also I hope K-Mart gets delt to the clippers or the Raptors dude deserves to rot on a team that sucks.

ya but if we get out of the first round he'd still have plenty of time to re-sign

If he shows a 50% chance of staying, there’s no way he should be traded…. that means if we go to the WCF then he re-sign… that deal will be there until June 31 and I don’t think he’d risk losing so much money

Don't think in NBA money regarding Melo

He goes to NY and his endorsement money will far exceed his NBA salary; that is if his current endorsement money doesn’t already exceed his NBA salary.

And he won’t be throwing away a ton of money. That’s NBA propaganda. The Melos & LeBrons & Kobes and DWades will all get their money; always have always will.

One troubling trend is Billups is already hintimating that he doesn't want to be here if the Nugs go into dump & re-build mode

Can’t blame him. He’s a champion calibur player with a few valuable years left; he doesn’t want to waste them on the Midwest version of the LA Clippers.

Makes you wonder what did the Nugs owner & FO promise Billups when he came home and whether Billups feels lied to?

STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
