Joey Graham Headed to Cleveland too

Less than 24 hours after we learn that Jamhal Mosley is leaving Denver for Cleveland, we hear that Joey "Bulldozer" Graham is a Cav too.

Star-divide

Really is a shame considering his last game as a Nuggets was by far his best career game and we'll always be left wondering if he could performed well under consistent minutes. I personally wish him the best of luck on the Cavs but he's got some pretty big shoes to fill from their last SF. He could end up starting (over Jamario Moon or Antwan Jamison) at SF so good for him.

Joey Graham agrees to a two-year deal with Cavaliers with terms undisclosed, his agent Byron Irvin tells Yahoo! Sports

I wonder if our FO is okay with letting Afflalo, JR and Harrington switch off at backing up Carmelo at SFor give Balkman some minutes . I think that's fine while he plays, but if he gets injured (knock on wood) we'd be in serious trouble b/c we still need JR and AAA to play min at SG and Al at PF. I think we should sign a wing that won't play unless there's an injury just as an insurance, someone like Ime Udoka (we had interest in last year), Keith Bogans (also had interest last year), Adam Morrison (no thanks), James Singleton, and prob some others I fogot to mention. Maybe we just keep our roster in tack and if something were to happen we just play Shelden at PF or Chauncey at SG to let AAA/ Al/ JR play at SF. Also want to point out there are couple big men available still to sit on the bench: Kyrlo Fesenko, DJ Mbenga, Alexis Ajinca (trade) and some other scrubs.

Also, I want to say that I read the deal was a 2 year $2.1 million deal, with a team option for the 2nd year, so it's pretty much a minimum deal that a team can choose if they want to keep him. Pretty sad that we couldn't keep him at that rate.

Cleveland picked up a winner

Dang! This is another one of those stupid things where the Nuggets only want to sign 1 year deals with good players and multi-year deals with bad players. Oh well, good luck Mr Graham.

We sure love screwing ourselves over

First Petro, now Graham.

Chris Andersen could be in a porno with his 'stache. Too bad he still wouldn't know how to box out.
Honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy.

I wouldn't exactly call losing Petro screwing ourselves over

Or Graham even.

I liked Joey though. Saw him at Cracker Barrel in Thornton (of all places) once, with what I’d assume is his mom and dad. He is a rock of a man. A Mega Hulk if you will… (like that one Mini Hulk? Haha)

He was a good player in the minutes he was given and was a good guy to have coming off our bench.

Petro screwed us only in that we lost a true “stiff”

Considering how bad we needed another big

Yeah, letting Petro go was pretty dumb.

Mega Hulk? Lol!

Best of luck in a new city. Big shoes to fill, indeed. But the fans there will love his hustle.

So we don't match Kleiza and we let Graham waslk?

So Balkman is off of Karl’s shit list then?

Would have to be right

I mean Im no Balkman fan but they’ve kind of left us with no choice. Nuggets have only Williams and Nene to start the season. Balkman will have to play and he could be a regular rotation guy for the entire first half of the season

I agree with everything

Except LBJ’s jumpshot sucks!!! People, I don’t get why you think it is good.
Graham has an the same stroke as LBJ.
As a bball player, I hate watching players who cross their shooting hand over the plane to their supporting hand, they won’t make many shots. KMart is a huge offender and so is LBJ. Call LBJ what u want, but a good jump shooter he is DEFINITELY not.

Bird

Larry Bird had a simliar over active support hand, it was almost a 2 handed jump shot.

Some??

Just that one against Orlando.
Whatever, this argument is moot. LBJ is DWade’s beotch these days.
I expect Wade to take the last shot, sure as he’ll wouldn’t want LeBron doing it.
Do u think those games he played against Demver were a fluke for why he missed those end game shots?? I mean LBJ hit some random threes when they didn’t matter, but when it mattered KMart/ AAA locked him down.
It is not just against us, it is against everybody.
LeBron is a good passer, very athletic/fast, but once u get him in jump shot mode he is out of the game unlike Kobe or even Melo who can survive somewhat is jumpshot mode

by JR15 on Jul 30, 2010 8:05 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions

Regarding Bird, Miller, Marion

Their release is still in the same place a conventional shooter like Ray Allen would end it. In their case, it is not how they start the shot, it is how they finish it. Of course Marion is an anomaly that noone knows how he hits 3s consistently.
I am saying LBJ has the same mechanics as KMart, not the same mechanics as great jump shooters. Hey, KMart was 40% from 3 at one point two years ago, then the flaw in his stroke took over. Same thing with LBJ, except LBJ takes a shit ton more shots. He also gets to the paint easily, so looking at his FG% is kinda flawed.

Wish we could have had him, but he knows on this team he is just an insurance policy. At least in Cleveland he can start.
Here’s to hoping we sign Amundson.

by Nate Timmons on Jul 30, 2010 12:55 PM MDT reply actions

that 2nd dunk...

wasn’t that the game that we had like 3 players injured in that game… I remember Ty was doing great than sprained his ankle, Melo and Chauncey were already out, that was the game KMart left b/c of the knee, then Nene sprained his ankle but came back… Idk if that was the same game that JR had the clutch free throws

by hvino on Jul 30, 2010 1:23 PM MDT up reply actions

Balkman

Renaldo is the backup to Melo now. Should be interesting to see if he sticks or if he is moved in a trade before the season starts. The Renaldo of a couple of years ago gave some good energy off the bench but apparently is not a great practice player and has had some injuries so hasn’t played much for quite a while

by jjbugs on Jul 30, 2010 1:18 PM MDT reply actions

not really...

we have Afflalo, JR and Harrington who all could play SF

by hvino on Jul 30, 2010 1:23 PM MDT up reply actions

Directly George's fault

Right now we have Chauncey, Ty, Afflalo, JR, Melo, Al and Nene as guys who are pretty much guaranteed playing time. That’s seven players and Karl really doesn’t expand any more than nine players for his rotation. This only leaves one guy and maybe two more and between Petro, Balkman, Joey and AC. So three of them won’t hardly ever see time. You can’t blame our FO for letting talented guys walk, because if Karl refuses to expand his rotation then there’s no reason for having them on the roster. But it is extremely frustrating when we give AC and Sheldon Williams, two guys not nearly as talented as Joey or Balkman, contracts and let the talent walk. That I just don’t uderstand, and I do have to blame Karl for not encorperating Joey at least enough in the lineup here and there to let the FO know that he’s a player worth having. The lack of Balkman getting playing time also makes no sense to me when you consider how well he played a few years ago and how much of a screw off JR has been, yet he still gets time.

Stiff 4 Life

by GoldenNugget on Jul 30, 2010 2:04 PM MDT reply actions

I understand the Balkman thing.

George Karl has said in the past that if he doesn’t get hustle out of players during practice then they aren’t worth playing in real time. Apparently Balkman is lazy during practice. I’m with you though, when he plays during games it’s fun to watch. His talent is obvious.

Joey Graham I didn’t get. According to an article about JG, a Kmart quote claimed he was the hardest working guy on the team. Why did Karl play so much of the injured players when he could have given JG more minutes. Only Karl knows the answer.

by MMGraves on Jul 30, 2010 2:15 PM MDT up reply actions

One thing I left out

When Balkman is playing, he looks like he’s having fun. Some of these other guys are obviously treating it like a business and that makes it boring. Bman is living for today.

by MMGraves on Jul 30, 2010 2:17 PM MDT up reply actions

he has fun jacking up threes in the first pt he sees in months

that is one thing that really irked me, he finally gets on the court and he starts shooting the deep ball? It seems awfully immature

just giving the fans what they ask for

I’m not worried about him doing that with meaningful minutes.

I’ll accept immaturity in garbage time. The polar opposite would be Kleiza padding his stats. I’ll never forget that loud guy in the nose bleed seats. The Nuggets had like a twenty point lead and Kleiza slashes hard into the paint for a layup. The guy bellows “Yeah, Kleiza! Never surrender!”

by deezNuggets on Jul 30, 2010 6:48 PM MDT up reply actions

Idk if it means everything,

but remember during pre-season/ training camp Karl was praising Joey as the next Jones… he was talking about starting him ( I think he did for preseason) and him playing a lot… I think the problem is that when Afflalo came out being so good, it pretty much took away Joey’s minutes…

by hvino on Jul 30, 2010 2:58 PM MDT up reply actions

i bet if "Kool" cut his hair he would get more respect from Karl.

But Coach said he would be more level headed this year so we’ll see I guess.

by InboundingLobPass on Jul 30, 2010 2:54 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

YA and I would think that Balkman would show him more respect now

All Karl has to do is look Balk in his tattooed eyes and say, “Listen here fool, you don’t realize how many ppl would kill to be a paid athlete like you, so you better get your fucking act together or your ass will rot on the end of the bench”

That is a bit of an oxymoron isn't it.

To hustle would indicate not giving up or slowing down on your grind. If he falls asleep he aint husling, and damn sure isn’t in any position to tell someone else to hustle harder. Unless he only has dreams of being a hustler. In which case he’s encouraging his subconscience.

I liked Graham, but he's pretty replaceable

I think his status as a quality reserve is being over-trumpeted. Still, it was a good opportunity for the Nuggs to hold onto a quality guy. I wonder if this is a sign the FO still has a move or two left in them this off-season…?

by neumdaddy on Jul 30, 2010 5:34 PM MDT reply actions

I agree, he was a valued short minute role player who understood his role

But that’s it… There’s no development left there. He’s been in the league for 5 years and his career stats are 6pts/3reb in 16minutes.

Neither he nor Petro are suddenly become better. They are end of the bench players who may or may not play consistent minutes.

Neither are being regarded as starting quality players in the league so the loss to the Nugs is truly very small. Both seem to be nice guys you root for; but no wins or losses at risk with their loss.

I do wish both of them well and hope they have great success.

I disagree on Petro

he showed development at the end of the season. He is still yonug enough to come into his own. Graham is what he is, an athletic wing who gives hard effort and ocasionally gets hot from the field. On a lesser team (such as the new Cavs) he could be a decent role player

Agree, he has the perfect attitude for a low minute role player

Understand your role, accept your minutes, go out and just hustle like crazy and you’re guaranteed a long NBA career because so many of the NBA players who aren’t starters do not make good bench players because they just don’t get it. Graham does get it so that alone makes him valuable.

yes, that is a valuable quality

I think that Petro – after a couple years of sulking – now gets it too. Last year he hustled in practice, listened to Chauncy and was ready when Kmart when down. Not a starter, but a legit reserve.

As a player, Joey is better. As for Nugg needs, they should have offered the BAE to Petro straight off.

You don’t know what you got till it’s gone – at the first hamstring tweak on the front line, Denver could miss both these dudes, badly.

by slader on Jul 31, 2010 10:34 AM MDT up reply actions

I was ok with Petro, but I'm ok with Petro leaving because Karl wasn't going to play him

In Stan-land where he is only willing to pay a certain amount of money regardless of its impact to team success; you have to be doubly careful about who you pay money too.
Petro & Graham just wasn’t going to get minutes from Karl.

Which is why this Balkman “thing” is so infuriating. Karl will not ever play this guy but his contract is re-worked so instead of an expiring $2m (last year) now you’re stuck with 1.6m for the next 3years.

Purely Wark’s folly, now the team is stuck with an untradeable player who Karl will not play.

ehhh consider the guys we've had on minimum deals the past couple of years

Birdman, AC, Dahntay, Balkman isn’t a bad contract but he should probably be getting the minimum. Honestly though with the FO not getting many bigs to help out losing K-mart and Bird to injury and Graham and Petro to FA, I have a feeling they are looking to get some return on their investment with Balkman

The STIFF LIST (as of 8/30 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: J.R. SMITH
Remember when I wrote that J.R.'s "nine lives may be up"? Well, that was last January. With Denver police looking closely at J.R. allegedly attacking former 14er Damien Lolar at a recent Pepsi Center shoot-around, it's clear that J.R. will never mature and it's time to move him.

STIFF #2: LEON ROSE AND WORLDWIDE WES
After commandeering LeBron's departure from Cleveland, Rose and Wes are allegedly working to move Melo out of Denver. Let's hope the Nuggets do what's best for Denver and not these two franchise-destroyers.

STIFF #3: RIC BUCHER
The man who once guaranteed that Kobe Bryant had played his last game in a Lakers uniform has been gravy-training on other reporters' Melo-related stories all summer long. Who does Bucher think he is, a sports blogger?

STIFF #4: MARCUS JORDAN
Like father, like son. Last week, His Airness's 19-year-old son tweeted about dropping $50k at the Aria casino in Las Vegas prompting an investigation.

STIFF #5: INDIANA PACERS
Brandon Rush has been suspended five games for violating the NBA's drug policy and 2010 draftee Lance Stephenson was recently arrested on assault charges. Larry Bird sure is doing a great job re-shaping the Pacers' already shoddy image.
