Power Rankings

Things have slowed down a bit around here.  Figured I'd start a post sure to give us lots of things to argue about.  Saw the power rankings on probasketballtalk.  They ranked the nuggets 14th, after essentially all the west playoff teams except the suns.

14. Nuggets (18/1) Kenyon Martin is going to miss much of next season, and they need him to come back right for the playoffs to have any chance. They tried hard to get more size but missed on all their attempts. They did land Al Harrington and Sheldon Williams, but that's not the answer. They have Carmelo Anthony, they have Chauncey Billups. This is a good team. But they do not have the talent to beat the Lakers or the top of the West. Right now, they are what they are, good but not great.

I know some on here think the addition of Harrington improves the offense enough to more than make up for the loss of Kmart.  If that's the case they are a high 50's win team and a two seed contender.  If it's not the case, and barring a major trade, we could be looking at a high 40's win team.  I'll guess at 50 wins and 5 to 7 seed barring a trade.

Let's see how long it takes for someone to call me an idiot that obviously keeps his head in a dark and smelly location.

It won't be popular but I'd say that's a fair ranking

Right now it’s tough to argue the point that right now the Nugs are 4th in their own division behind OKC, Utah & Portland.
That’s just gives them more people to prove wrong… but they’ll have to prove it.

Utah and OKC you can debate

But Portland? Roy, Pryzbilla and Oden off injury plagued years. The only roster addition they made was Matthews at an insane price. Camby is Older, miller is older. Im not sure Why Portland is such a hot pick right now

They do have lots of size, and talent

And if they ever stay healthy they are the second best team in the West. But health is always a huge problem there.

When did they stop mandatory drug testing for posters? heh heh heh woo hoo!!!

You still have to prove it on the court to convince me otherwise…

I could argue that Denver is still better than Miami; But OKC, Boston, Dallas & Utah at a minimum are better teams than Denver based on direct performance.

I could be convinced that Portland is better (they have a better roster and are already neck & neck with Denver as a team).

Chicago has to prove it to me but they were already good with bad leadership & no Boozer; I can’t see them taking a step backwards.

So at best I see Nugs as 7th; and at worst 10th (if Portland, Chicago & Miami are better). But still again, the teams have to prove it… including the Nugs.

Oh isn't that sweet mommy & daddy took the parental controls off so you can play big boy before bedtime

The rest of the time there’s no need, desire nor interest to reply to your sad comments since I’ve not seen you post an original nor intelligent post. You instead like to lurk in the shadows and then jump in and post an attempt of a personal attack… you know, like right now.

Fact of the matter is I have a lot of respect for Garrett’s opinions & postings and what teasing I’ve ever done towards him is and has been done in playful jest; just as he would and has done towards me…. in other words, this is how big people communicate with one another.

For you on the other hand I have no respect nor interest towards. But you can go back to the dilusion that you’re posting anything that I’m actually reading.

And please try to make an effort to remember; this is totally on you. Any and all comments I have ever sent to you has only been as a reply to your attempts at trying to trash me… Sadly the same cannot ever be said towards you because I have never initiated a comment towards you.

Is that simple enough? If so now off to bed young man and don’t forget your prayers and glass of warm milk… and sweet dreams lil’ tiger.

Look, lets settle it now and be completely honest

1. Obviously you do read and care about what I post, because you have such passionate responses
2. Look at what you just wrote, seriously how can you argue about intelligent conversation and deabte void of personal attacks. You just wrote a five paragraph (if you can call two sentences a paragraph) personal attack.
3. Following up on my second comment, this is what I can’t stand about you. You are so incredibly hypocritical it can drive one to madness.
4. This is not on me. You were the one to attack m first, and continue to do so, even so when I make a comment in jest 9which is what I have done again in this thread) you immediately get bent out of shape and become very insulting towards me
5. Nice try with the young angle, but in most likelihood I’m older than you and even if I’m not that whole “I’m older than you so I’m superior” logic is so flawed. Look at LACK, he’s made plenty of great posts and he’s only 14
6. I’ve contributed a lot to this blog. I don’t expect you to know that though, after all you only showed up about what? three months ago? That is most definitely you taking a shot at me and it is one I am taking very personally, quite frankly, get bent (I’m holding my tongue because this is not my website and is a public forum) you have no idea about my contributions to this, or any other, Denver Nuggets site. You have NO RIGHT to go there. Even though I disagree with the majority of your comments, I have NEVER demeaned you as a person or as a Nuggets fan as you just have to me.
7. For someone who claims such wisdom in age, you are quite immature and its these types of posts that confirm that.
8. Seriously what is your deal? I can’t even joke with you without you getting offended.
9. “I have never initiated a comment towards you”…you said that in a comment initiated towards me, so my question is….um what?

I want to go on, but its late. so to summarize, learn to take a joke and stop being so hypocritical and finally, seriously look in the mirror before claiming your purity.

Garrett so you don't have to waste your time reading my comment below let me summarize...

You rock!

And to quote myself: “Fact of the matter is I have a lot of respect for Garrett’s opinions & postings and what teasing I’ve ever done towards him is and has been done in playful jest; just as he would and has done towards me”

And you, as I expect, do understand the difference between a playful ribbing and another poster sending a personal attack on another.

Hahahaha

That was funny shit man and yea i know you’re playing haha I don’t care in all honesty i prob was high when i made those rankings, I can’t remember ( this new LA confidentiol shit is legit) and Nate sorry if you get mad at me for talkin about the dobby on here haha.

Anyways, too back up my rankings I mean LA is number 1 hands down, Miami has to show me they can beat Orlando before i put them ahead but as far as the rest goes I see Denver ahead of Dallas, Portland, OKC (which is the closest) and Utah because they all dramatically changed their rosters this summer. I don’t know if Dallas improved this summer if anything i think they got worse. Utah got way worse in losing Boozer and Mathiews for Bell and Jefferson (my personal opinion), Portland has to show me they can do something while being fully healthy and OKC will be starting a rookie at center and that could go either way (I hate Kansas so I’m hoping it goes bad). Denver hasn’t really changed besides teh fact of adding a shooting big which will help a lot and getting their coach back. Give me 20 games in the season and I will give you the most honest rankings I can give you.

I agree... also about the Nugs. I love the Al signing but the Nugs still need a legit post player

And the Al can go to his natural position of 6th man (SF & PF). Ideally the legit post would be a true center and Nene can be PF (that’s really where should always have been).
Nene’s problem right I think a lot is mental; there’s less instinct to him and more concern about getting a foul. I fear a huge development opportunity was missed with him.

Dont care about overall rankings.

Cause noone cares about the JV league (East) And no way Miami is over LA. People don’t realize what LA did this off season that will make them much much deeper.

1)LA
2)OKC
3)Denver
4)Dallas
5)UTAH
6)Portland

In 10 years the East has had 16 teams in the playoffs with a 500 or under record..

The west? none

The East usually has 4 or less ‘good’ teams and the rest are so-so.
The West has 8.

I'm talking about now...

Orlando, Miami, Boston, Chicago, and Atlanta (and maybe Milwaukee) will prob all win 50+ games this coming season… then you have then you have the last 3 (or 2) spots which always comes down to like 4 teams…

it doesn’t matter the “last ten years” Im talking about this year

by hvino on Jul 29, 2010 10:50 PM MDT up reply actions

O ya and the West hasn't improved much from last year...

what team out West has made a major move (Utah, but only b/c they lost Boozer and same story with Phoenix)

by hvino on Jul 29, 2010 10:51 PM MDT up reply actions

You may be right

There’s been the Western Conference called domination for so long but the East has progressively been building up. Their back half is still quite lame; but the top of the conference is right up there with the top of the West.
The West still has more middle of the pack teams but that may be changing in the next couple as well.

Really? No suns?

I like your rankings except for Atlanta, where i would have put the suns, who did in fact get to the WCF, and pretty close to beating the Lakers. Yes they lost Amare, but I won’t be suprised if they can overcome that, with some of their additions. Maybe Nugs switch spots with Dallas, i don’t think they’re much better after this offseason, on the other hand it’s hard to justify havingour team as high as 4 or 5 when we lost in the first round of the playoffs. I don’t know, when does the season start again?

by Nuggetsdelight on Jul 31, 2010 10:22 AM MDT up reply actions

My quarrel with the suns

They have only got worse this offseason, they lost Amar’e, they overpaid Frye, they signed Warrick and thats about it, Nash is another year older etc. Atlanta had a great season last year and then fell flat on their face in the playoffs but they essentially will be bringing the same team back to the floor this year. I don’t think ATL has quite got used to playing without the underdog status and this year I think they will improve.

the point is....14 is bullshit and disrespectful

Eff those guys and their anti-nuggets stance, putting Orlando at 3 and justifying it with they didn’t add anyone and they didn’t make the finals is bull….speaking of, I think boozer will help them win some more games but they are second round outs…just like old Utah, which is now worse Utah because Al is a soft C.
I propose we push to make Utah the soft all-stars!
PG = Leandro Barbosa
SG = Vince Carter
SF = Carlos Delfino
PF – Al Jefferson
C- Nene
That would be a hell of a team. Finger rolls, baby hooks, a rebound if it bounces their way and a little outside shooting!

Although I hate to admit it

I can’t really argue too much with this ranking. I guess it’s kind of shocking because I never really considered us that bad, but as long as we don’t have K-Mart and our starting C and PF have combined career rpg of about 12 then yeah, we are in some trouble I would think. Seriously, how have we not made any moves for bigs when we’ve had this problem for roughly two years now?

Stiff 4 Life

by GoldenNugget on Jul 30, 2010 12:29 AM MDT reply actions

It is frustrating

Not only did we make no move, but we let a 7-foot C walk just as he was starting to pan out . Don’t get me wrong – Petro’s no all star, but if we had acted quickly, he might well have taken the BAE.

So who knows about a ranking? If the Nuggs click with Harrington and get progressively healthier (Bird and then Kmart return) they could win homecourt advantage. If not, they really could slip right out of the playoffs. 14th overall? Gawd I hope not.

by slader on Jul 30, 2010 1:48 AM MDT up reply actions

Health

Next to defense and rebounding, health may be our biggest weakness.
No Bird, No K-Mart. Nene and Sheldon being the only bigs. Not to mention Coach Karl’s health.
At least we have more offense. Not really excited about it, but oh well.
With the way the team looks right now, being ranked 10-14 may be legit.

Chris Andersen could be in a porno with his 'stache. Too bad he still wouldn't know how to box out.

Can we define Power Rankings

When we rate teams what are we really saying, number 1 will win the finals next year or number 1 will win the most regular season games. Big difference for some teams.

I’m thinking of two examples from last season; Celtics did terrible at the end of regular season and ended up in the finals. Cav’s had the most wins of all teams and bombed out of the playoffs early.

Some posts talk about 50+ win teams. At least in the west that is not a criteria for success because as I watched the win/loss column for all teams, west and east I noticed that by end of regular season east teams guaranteed to make the playoffs had less wins than teams in the west guaranteed NOT to make the playoffs.

by MMGraves on Jul 30, 2010 9:32 AM MDT reply actions

Power ranking is statistical masturbation

Nothing more. The numbers mean absolutely nothing and have no impact on a teams success. I understand the PER’s are nice for tracking wins vs losses against a specific player/line up performance, but power rankings? That’s just Tim Legler and company looking at a teams assumed success based on nothing more than personelle. Like I said – statistical masturbation.

Sorry for any images that that phrase evokes.

The STIFF LIST (as of 8/30 by Andrew)

STIFF #1: J.R. SMITH
Remember when I wrote that J.R.'s "nine lives may be up"? Well, that was last January. With Denver police looking closely at J.R. allegedly attacking former 14er Damien Lolar at a recent Pepsi Center shoot-around, it's clear that J.R. will never mature and it's time to move him.

STIFF #2: LEON ROSE AND WORLDWIDE WES
After commandeering LeBron's departure from Cleveland, Rose and Wes are allegedly working to move Melo out of Denver. Let's hope the Nuggets do what's best for Denver and not these two franchise-destroyers.

STIFF #3: RIC BUCHER
The man who once guaranteed that Kobe Bryant had played his last game in a Lakers uniform has been gravy-training on other reporters' Melo-related stories all summer long. Who does Bucher think he is, a sports blogger?

STIFF #4: MARCUS JORDAN
Like father, like son. Last week, His Airness's 19-year-old son tweeted about dropping $50k at the Aria casino in Las Vegas prompting an investigation.

STIFF #5: INDIANA PACERS
Brandon Rush has been suspended five games for violating the NBA's drug policy and 2010 draftee Lance Stephenson was recently arrested on assault charges. Larry Bird sure is doing a great job re-shaping the Pacers' already shoddy image.
