Birdman Had Surgery Today.... good or bad news?

Realgm.com is reporting that Chris Andersen had surgery to repair a partial tear in his knee.

Star-divide

Personally I think this is good news because he was clearly hampered by it during the season. It says he should have a complete comeback by the first game of 2010-2011. Hopefully he can comeback from what was a disappointing year. The only downside I see is that he might get out of shape from being off the knee for so long, but only time can tell.

Just read this. Very GOOD news.

Birdman was not right practically all year. Now that we know it was actually a partial tear and not just “knee tendinitis” as was so often reported explains much more for the way he played.

Get well soon Bird.

will KMart be getting the same surgery?

If so maybe there’s hope he returns to form by the beginning of the season, plays well, and we get maximum value when we trade his massive expiring contract.

I have a feeling KMart will stick to PRP

PRP works best when you combine it with months of rest. He didn’t have that during the season.,

I dunno if the news is that good...

I think that the earlier you get surgery on a tear in your knee the faster it heals…who knows how long this tear’s been there…

I knew there was something seriously wrong

He didn’t look right all season long. Why didn’t they tell us this sooner? Kinda pisses me off.

if that is true

We need to give Bird props for gutting it out, we wouldn’t have had ANY chance without him (it would have been taco time)

Petro>>Injured Birdman
but props to birdman anyway, this was really supposed to be the organisation’s and coaching staff’s call…i mean Petro was always right in front of them

"I believe that basketball, when a certain level of unselfish team play is realized, can serve as a kind of metaphor for ultimate cooperation. It is a sport where success, as symbolized by the championship, requires that the dictates of the community prevail over selfish personal impulses. An exceptional player is simply one point on a five-pointed star. Statistics—such as points, rebounds, or assists per game—can never explain the remarkable interaction that takes place on a successful pro team."

idk, Bird did have some moments

where Petro seemed like he couldn’t handle a lot of minutes… remember that clippers game where he was on fire and we came back from down 20 pts and he finished with like 18 and 10… i remember him being exhausted and he hadn’t even player 30 minutes… maybe its cuz he doesn’t play much so his body isn’t used to it, but he should b able to considering all the rest he has had

If I saw Malik Allen take Bird's place

I’d have a heart attack. I’d rather see Anthony Carter….but it’s not like we have to worry about it anyway. Let’s just hope he comes back looking good.

I thought we all knew that Birdman was seriously hurt.

Thats why I never criticized him. He was messed up alot of places the whole year but he still was out there trying his ass off.

by GottaLoveMelo on May 28, 2010 6:37 AM MDT reply actions

I still think he deserves all the complaints we had about him

refusing to heal yourself is admirable only if you are playing well….and I can count maybe a handful of games where Bird actually played well last year. He should have sat out for an extended period, regardless of intent, to heal up during the year. When he was in there he was lethargic, couldn’t jump (for obvious reasons) and was getting boxed out by everyone from centers to guards.

Once Bird heals from this surgery I hope he recommits to doing things a bit better. Better anticipation on fakes (the jumping to the roof after one fake is a bit embarrassing) and learning better technique to not get constantly blocked out into oblivion. I’m hard on Bird, yes, but I think after people signed a damn petition to keep him in Denver, the least he could do is reward people by improving his “energy” game.

Heal up Bird. You should have done this many, many times this last year.

andersen had a career high in rebounds per game and was 6th in nba with 2 blocks per game

nuggets eliminate the 3 player rotation at center and power forward he will be even more productive. andersen, nene and kmart all tried to ration their fouls because of the extended minutes with that rotation. under the circumstances that were beyond his control he had a very courageous effort.

true

he did post his careeer best in rebounds per game. however blocks are overrated. for every block he has, he either gives up a foul or 2 and/or gives up an offensive putback bc he left his man.

id rather see birds blocks go down with him playing better fundamentally. blocking out for one.

let's go nuggets! who u wit?

Curiosity here

If the Medical Staff knew about this, why didn’t they just sit him out? Yeah, he wanted to play and junk but come on. They were in the Playoffs. Other then game 5, he did nothing to help the team.
Not only that, I was wondering why Adrian Dantley told Andersen to only focus on blocks and rebounds. What is that telling you?
It’s easy to blame Bird for being so careless, but the staff should be accepting half of the blame as well. Afterall, they knew how f*cked up he was and they didn’t sit him out all season, except for the 6 games he actually missed.

Ah, the precious balance between management and the player …

-The player wants to play, even when hazardous to their health.
-Management wants the player to play if he thinks he can.

This balance has been going on since professional sports began!

Also after long injury you hear retired players talk about how management tried to rush them back … sometimes players have to do what’s best for their long term health. Bird seems like a guy who has to be told to sit too.

That's ridiculous

Nobody should be rushed back into the lineup. If that’s the case with Andersen, then shame on the Management. It’s not like we didn’t have other players sitting on the bench or anything. We would have been fine without him.
However, if Andersen didn’t care (which looked a little obvious) then shame on him.
I dunno. This year just sucked.

Well, actually the Nugs didn't have anybody else

But that doesn’t forgive them for playing him.
But that’s old news, players, coaches & management have done that for years and will continue to push, shame, lie, bribe, trick, etc. players to play.

the bribe comes disguised as incentive laden contracts

Not sure about Bird’s contract situation…but a lot of times a player rushes back from injury to make that “games played” requirement to get that bonus.

Nobody should be rushed back into the lineup. If that’s the case with Andersen, then shame on the Management.

Again, they have a monetary incentive to see fan favorites play. Just look to the Beast’s beef with Denver doctors after his recurring hip injury…

I should have said this in the first place but...
