Blowing up the Roster!

To me, it's apparent that the current Nugget's roster isn't getting it done. Unfortunately, we have an owner that is extremely tight with his money and he isn't willing to spend whatever it takes to get us over the hump. Our team is getting older, and with age comes injuries. We can't afford to play Chauncey and K-Mart 35 minutes a game. Even if we keep them down to 25 I still think they'll be worn out or injured when the playoffs come. Therefore, since the FO isn't willing to spend and we're getting old... It's time to BLOW UP THE ROSTER!!!

First Scenario:

Current Cap: $74 Mil

TRADE

Chicago: Taj Gibson

Denver: Trade Exception, Future 1st

TRADE

Orlando: Brandon Bass, 29th Pick

Denver: J.R. Smith

TRADE

Atlanta Hawks: Jamal Crawford, Zaza Pachulia, Trade Exception

PG- Chauncey Billups, Ty Lawson

SG- Arron Afflalo, Jamal Crawford

SF- Carmelo Anthony, Joey Graham, Renaldo Balkman

PF- Taj Gibson, Brandon Bass

C- Nene, Zaza Pachulia, Chris Anderson

Analysis: We only dropped $2 Million in cap, but I feel like we've added a lot more depth in Taj Gibson, Brandon Bass, and Zaza Pachulia. I also feel like we've gotten a better, more consistent J.R. Smith in Jamal Crawford. The Bulls clear cap space for getting Chris Bosh, and J.R. Smith fits in with the Magic more than anyone in the league. The Hawks also decided to blow up their roster since Joe Johnson is taking off and the current roster wasn't getting the job done.

NEW LINEUP

PG- Chauncey Billups, Ty Lawson, Eric Bledsoe

SG- Eric Gordon, Arron Afflalo

SF- Marvin Williams, Joey Graham, Renaldo Balkman

PF- Josh Smith, Greg Monroe, Brandon Bass, Chris Anderson

C- Nene, DeAndre Joran, Johan Petro

Analysis: First I'd like to say that we dropped over $10 Million in cap space. Denver got a load of young promising players along with some players that could be diamonds in the rough. Eric Gordon is a ton better than J.R. Smith. I don't believe that SF is a position you need a great player at to win a championship. I think that Marvin Williams can do fine. I hate the thought of losing Melo, and I'm not saying that I want to. This is just a creative way to change and possibly improve our roster. We now have the depth in the front court to compete with the dominant franchises in the league. After 3 years we can evaluate how each of our post players played and decide which ones we want to keep and which ones we want to let go. We drafted Greg Monroe because he can play PF or C. He's a great passer and is an excellent post scorer and post defender. We also drafted Eric Bledsoe because he's versatile and able to play PG or SG. Chauncey Billups can't play forever and if Eric Bledsoe wasn't overshadowed by John Wall, he would have been a lottery pick. I wish I could find a way to get rid of Chris Anderson but I can't seem to.

Kroenke being tight is nonsense

He wants to pay for players smartly after he got burned 2 yrs ago doing things like Cuban. Does Cuban ever win even though he spends all the time?? Nope.
I see how we as a fan group are way more negative than positive, but we did make the playoffs 8 straight yrs under Kroenke. More than Sterling ever gave for the Clippers. Probably more than any other Nuggets owner.
I know this post is off topic, but I think silent Stan wants to win by buying smartly as opposed to just loading players a la the Magic and getting burned for it later

I think the problem

with the Magic is that they’re a 3-point oriented team. Teams like this can’t ever win championships.

Cuban does win

Cuban’s Mavs have made it to the finals, the Nugs never have in the NBA. The Nugs really have no position to judge or trash another team until they have similar success.

Don't blow up the roster

Yeah, it needs a few new bolts, but don’t destroy something on the verge of working.
If the Nuggets really plan on getting rid of K-Mart, they better have one hell of a back-up plan because there’s nobody else on the team who can defend like him. Unless they can find an actual Center, Nene isn’t going anywhere.

I agree

Dont need to blow it all up. Like Taj Gibson though. Maybe start Jr at start of season and see if he gets better or raises trade value. maybe he could get us more than bass

by Nz Nuggets on May 24, 2010 4:17 PM MDT up reply actions

I wasn't saying we need to

but I do think that we need to make some major changes (J.R. and K-Mart). I’d like to see us get some value from them instead of just letting them walk at the end of the season. Besides, I got bored and I was being playful with possible situations.

The title of your post says "Blowing up the Roster"

What was I supposed to think?
Anyway….You’re right. Getting value from K-Mart and J.R. would be nice. Not sure if we’re going to get much out of Martin but J.R. is still a kid with no history of injuries.
Trade K-Mart for a big to help out Carmelo, Re-sign Petro and trade J.R. for a guy who can help off of the Bench. I can’t trust Bird, J.R. and Lawson right now.

everything depends on whether melo signs on the dotted line this summer

another issue involves coach dantley. utah assistant coach tyrone corbin has been interviewing for head coaching positions. corbin moves on, dantley goes to utah and anthony carter becomes a nuggets assistant coach. ac does not officially retire and can play in a worst case scenario/emergency. denver resigns petro and graham. malik allen and ac are out. could they be replaced by butch and coby karl? smith gets traded for tyrus thomas and a 2nd round pick. denver uses the 2nd rounder on jordan crawford from xavier. read the scouting report on crawford. he sounds just like a clone of earl smith.

Too Bad the K-mart J-smith trade

is the only valid one of the bunch. You gotta read up on the rules involved with trades man. Salaries have to match within 125% for teams over the cap. Trade exceptions can not be paired with players or draft picks

?

The only one that doesn’t work is the Melo to the Clippers on the Trade Machine. Let me get this straight- you can’t trade a player straight up for a trade exception right (so the Gibson for a trade exception wouldn’t work)?

by higgyhoops12 on May 24, 2010 9:14 PM MDT up reply actions

This is where the trade exceptions are created

In the Melo to Clippers scenario the Clips are way under the salary cap. So What happens is the money difference between the Clips & Nugs is given to the Nugs as a trade exception that the Nugs could use or let expire.
That was what happened in the Camby trade. The Clips had the available cap space to just take Camby without giving players back in return so the Nugs received back a $9mm trade exception.

so you can't

add a trade exception with a player?

by higgyhoops12 on May 24, 2010 11:45 PM MDT up reply actions

Right

You can only use a trade exception by itself to acquire a player. You can’t figure that If I have player A with 6 million salary and player B with 4 million salary and an exception worth 5 million then you can trade Melo because his salary is close enough to 15 million to make it work. “The word” is right on the Clippers though, I forgot they are way under the cap. The other trades though, won’t work and here’s why:
Taj Gibson: Take away the pick and it’s a valid trade. Other ways to make this work-simply trade the pick for cash, while doing a simultaneous trade for Gibson with the exception. Also could “pull a Camby” and trade the pick for rights to swap a second round picks down the road and do a simultaneous trade for Gibson.
Brandon Bass- JR’s Salary is 150% of Bass’ and Orlando is over the cap (does not work in trade machine either btw, but trade machine is not to be trusted, its not fool proof) If you add Ryan Andersen though, you have a valid trade, and imo a more equal value as far as talent.
Pachulia/ Crawford- You actually probably don’t need the exception on this one, I think the salaries are just close enough, if they aren’t though then yeah you can’t combine the exception to make it work. Horford has a team option which ATL will definitely exercise meaning they will likely still be just barely over the cap, even with Joe Johnson leaving. ATL doesn’t really have any toss in players (I think Teague is a bit better then a toss in, but maybe not. He is still just a backup pg) so trading with them is difficult unless you can get the salaries to match.

Some ways to make them work

Chicago: Taj Gibson
Denver: trade exception

Orlando: Brandon Bass, Ryan Anderson
Denver: J.R. Smith

Atlanta: Jamal Crawford, Zaza Pachulia
Denver: Kenyon Martin

I like those options

Those trades aren’t touching the most skilled trade options we have: Nene & Melo.
If you have to trade a Nene or a Melo, you’ve really gotta push for the most value you squeeze out of a lame fool….errr I mean a trade partner.

what about
Denver: KMart
Orlando: Gortat, Bass, Reddick (S&T to make salaries match)

by hvino on May 25, 2010 6:53 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't think that

Orlando would be willing to pay K-Mart $14.2 Million for next year which is what it would cost for Gortat, Bass, and Redick. Were you thinking of a 1 year contract for K-Mart?

Either way, I don’t think that Orlando is going to trade 3 contributors for 1 expiring contract, especially while they’re still in contention for a championship.

by higgyhoops12 on May 25, 2010 8:38 PM MDT up reply actions

Probably not, though it'll be interesting to see what happens with Orlando

the tone may be changing after the Magic’s win tonight; but if they lose out to Boston I’ll be curious to see what the Magic do next year.
for some teams, like the Magic, KMart would be an interesting dynamic. yes, his trade value is now tied to his expiring contract, but for a team like the Magic, and even the Cavs, KMart would be valuable big providing defense and extra toughness that the team lacks.
I could see a team looking for that last little bit of extra try to get it from KMart for one season and then let him walk for the cap relief.
