Another coaching option: don't fire/ keep Karl, hire Mike Brown...

Keep George Karl as head coach, HIRE MIKE BROWN as assistant coach, who surely will let go by the Cavs soon.

Star-divide

I don't really know what AD's "contribution" is to the Nuggets bench, so if we have to make room for Mike Brown, then fire AD.

Why?

Mike Brown is a defensive guru. He will be our defensive coach like Tom Thibodeau is in Boston.

I do think both Tom Thibodeau and Mike Brown are clones... they are a great defensive coach, but don't have the offensive minds to be a head coach.

But as assistants? They're terrific. Look at how far Boston goes despite their so-called age. When the moment comes, they know how to play as a team. The bonding part is their defense. Playing together comes from playing defense together.

However, if we keep the coaching staff as it is, our defense will forever be "good" in a 10 game stretch, "bad" in a 15 game stretch, "matador like" in other games, etc. It will be inconsistent. We have to have a specialized "department" that focuses on that defensive department, like Rivers can focus on the players' focus and direction... and let Thibodeau focus on the defensive game plan.

Karl is very much like Rivers... clueless defensively. That's why they have to have a great ally who can help them in their weak department. Only difference is Doc actually did it and got Thibodeau as his assistant, and Karl didn't... What is AD for?

An extra is: Mike Brown used to be the video guy for Denver Nuggets, so he will be back to the environment he is familiar with.

Contrary to what everybody thinks

I think Stan wants to spend money to win a ship. Last year we literally had no chips to trade.
I think this year Stan wants to spend smartly unlike 2 yrs ago.
So yes hiring Mike Brown would be a start and paying for harder workers who aren’t stiffs vs. talented players who don’t work hard is his goal at least according to Paige.

doc rivers was a defensive stand out as a player

he played for pat riley and jeff van gundy with the knicks. the huge difference between rivers and george karl is the support he gets from the front office. during the 2006-07 season the celtics finished 24 wins and 58 losses. the season included a celtics all time record of 18 consecutive game losing streak. name one coach in the nba to have a season like that and still keep his job. the following season the celtics won the nba title.

2 megastars past their prime

doc rivers will be the first to admit he is still the same coach regardless of the teams record. larry brown coaching the knicks is another examle i have used before. brown’s record was 23 wins and 59 losses. he was already in the hall of fame, coached an nba and ncaa champion before he got to new york. if the players do not listen and cooperate along with the owner and front office not backing up the coach it will never matter who the coach is.

Copied from the Wiki

He began his career in 1992 with the Denver Nuggets where he spent five seasons as the team’s scout and video coordinator. In 2000, Brown was hired by Gregg Popovich as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Spurs. While with the Spurs, Brown’s teams won at least 58 games each season. He also was the head coach for the Spurs’ summer league teams in Boston and Salt Lake City. After winning a championship with San Antonio in 2003, Brown was hired as associate head coach to Rick Carlisle with the Indiana Pacers. He helped lead Indiana to consecutive playoff appearances including a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2004.

Thanks… I drool over the stats already.

Again, as assistants, Mike and Tom are terrific. I wouldn’t hire them as a head coach even if Karl inexplicably stepped down, we didn’t have a coach and I was Warkentein or Kroenke. But will definitely pursue them as assistants.

Mike as a defensive assistant coach would make this Denver Nuggets team special. You add Billups who will relay that message to the players every GAME, every PLAY, we’d have all the weapons to win.

Somehow that’s how I feel about Thibodeau, that he feels more comfortable as an assistant. He witnessed first-hand how a defensive assistant coach like Mike Brown try to be a head coach. That’s probably why he hasn’t accepted a head coaching job although he has been wanted since 2 summers ago.

Sounds great and all

but why take a step down if there are other teams out there in need of a head coach? I mean if he gets no offers I could see it happening, but i see this as a loooong shot

he still may have time and money on his contract

if he accepts a job under certain conditions he may not get paid the remainder.

Maybe the other teams would realize what a horrible head coach Brown is and not want him.

Maybe just as an assistant

I don’t know how much of a difference he’ll make, but even a minor upgrade is better than nothing at this point.

I think the FO has to see the error of their ways

Not having an assistant on the bench who had head coaching experience killed us this year. It’s like any job, if a key guy has to miss work for an extended period of time and your in a lull or a down period then yes sure train up a new guy, but if you lose that key guy during the busiest most hectic time of the year then you need someone who can step in right away and carry the load. The FO knows there are, and will always be, questions pertaining to George Karl’s health, they need to have a solid backup plan.

Agree, The FO needs to beef up the coaching bench as much as the player bench.

They made a mistake when Doug Moe retired by not hiring a past head coach.

Can't have it both ways with Karl

Either Karl is a career genius head coach or he’s incapable of coaching without direction.

The truth in the matter with Moe is that Doug Moe was already here as a consultant when Karl was brought on. Moe is one of Karl’s heroes and would never fire Moe; but the reality is he never would have hired Moe as an asst. coach.

Also, Karl completely dismissed Moe’s teachings about putting in the Nuggets old motion offense. With Moe it really got to the point where he wasn’t doing anything and broke out with “I’m too old for this sh**” and retired.

A 20+ year veteran coach, especially one with Karl’s ego, will never hire another veteran coach unless 1) it’s an old pal or 2) owner/FO tell him to or he’s fired.

thats true... at this point any past head coach or long time assistant would be an upgrade as an assistant coach

just so we have some more experience on the bench

like even Vinny Del Negro would help as an assistant

by hvino on May 15, 2010 9:57 AM MDT up reply actions

This is not about replacing AD though...

It’s not about AD… it’s about getting our “Tom Thibodeau”. Getting that defensive genius as our assistant coach so our team can be defensive minded.

Mike Brown’s job would be to coach this team solely on defense.

Karl’s job is basically to repeat what Mike Brown says and the one who says, “cmon guys we have to play” and all of those motivational shits.

when Cleveland gives him his walking papaers

I wouldnt be apposed to getting him or someone like him to pair with grg as assoc. head coaches to help support Karl in his recovery. Karl would have to be onboard with this and I would still leave him in as the last word but if a guy could be brought in who isnt a stiff (AD) and actually has some athority with the players it might help the whole team.

by nickademus on May 18, 2010 9:51 AM MDT reply actions

Karl is supposed to be a defensive guru

That’s his whole coaching mentality even to the point where he forsakes any legit offensive philosophy with his “offense is made by the defense” belief.

That’s the same as telling Karl who fancies himself as a defensive coach that he’s a bad defensive coach… I don’t think that’ll go over too well, whether it’s true or not.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
