Champions these are not... (Nuggets/Suns recap)

Melo_mediumNever in my lifetime could I imagine a 53-win season and a (most likely) fifth playoff seed feeling so awful.  But we still have a ways to go before this season's obituary has been written.

Star-divide

As soon as the Oklahoma City Thunder lost to the injury-riddled Portland Trail Blazers last night, I had the entire dream scenario playing out in my head: the Nuggets would defeat the aging, soft Phoenix Suns in Phoenix for the first time in 11 tries on Tuesday night, get a walkover first round series victory over the Blazers, be well rested and ready for whoever survives the sure-to-be-brutal Dallas Mavericks/San Antonio Spurs series, get head coach George Karl back, feed off Karl's miraculous recovery to pull off the second round upset and get ready to tee off against the faltering Los Angeles Lakers en route to their franchise's first NBA Finals appearance.

In a sports year that's already seen the New Orleans Saints win a Super Bowl, Butler get to the NCAA Championship Game and Phil Mickelson win the Masters, the Nuggets were destined to be yet another feelgood story for the ages.

Or so I thought.

Most unfortunately for me - and Nuggets fans like me worldwide - reality, the Suns and Adrian Dantley got in the way of that feelgood fantasy.

Let's start with reality.  While the Nuggets should be commended for winning 53 games in a season filled with injuries to Chauncey Billups, Carmelo Anthony and Kenyon Martin, the loss of head coach George Karl to onerous cancer treatments and a seven-game suspension for J.R. Smith to begin the season, these Nuggets should not be confused with a championship-caliber team.  As Bill Parcells so aptly stated many years ago: "You are what your record says you are."  And when you lose to Milwaukee at home even though they're playing a back-to-back coming off a double overtime game, or lose to the Knicks who have nothing to play for while your entire season is on the line, you're simply not a championship team.  On balance, the Nuggets had an incredibly successful regular season.  But based on how they've played in the biggest of games lately, it's hard to foresee how this great regular season ends with a championship.

Regarding the Suns, I'm still living in denial that they're any good.  I might be the very last person to ever jump on the Suns' bandwagon, but this Nuggets team - with their season on the line - should have been able to win in Phoenix .  The Suns have been barnstorming lately, but in their last 11 games against plus-.500 teams they're only 6-5.  Not exactly a win/loss record that should scare anybody.  The Nuggets have more talent, more youth, more athleticism and a better bench than Phoenix, and yet they insist on playing like the Washington Generals in the presence of the Suns.  It still makes no sense.

And I've saved the best for last: Adrian Dantley.  Poor Adrian Dantley - a man who's clearly never harbored head coaching ambitions - perfectly content making his $250,000 (or whatever he gets paid) assistant coach's salary, holding a clipboard and periodically clapping his hands during timeouts, was thrown into the lion's den when Karl's treatments began and was in over his head from day one.  The game plan against the Suns seemed pretty simple to me: slow the game down, play big, punish the Suns inside on offense and play overly physical on defense.  And yet by the time TNT switched from the conclusion of the Bulls/Celtics game to the Nuggets/Suns game already in progress, the game was already over.  Dantley - most erroneously - either had no game plan at all or decided that the Nuggets might win via a shootout.  I'll give Dantley the benefit of the doubt and go with no game plan at all, because no one in their right mind could possibly think a shootout at Phoenix while playing the second of a back-to-back is a good idea.

But if I've learned anything during my tenure as your trusty Nuggets blogger and fan advocate, it's unfair to blame one person alone for a team's failures.  The players - notably the Nuggets veteran leaders in Chauncey, Melo and Nene - and assistant coaches must also take responsibility for what's happened in Karl's absence.  Simply put, the Nuggets had a virtual lock on the two-seed and a 55-win season before Karl's teary-eyed press conference shocked us all and have turned that good fortune into a possible first-round playoff exit without home court advantage.

When the season began, Melo was routinely getting to the free throw line at least 10 times a game.  Through his first 16 games, Melo shot less than nine free throws just four times.  And yet in his last 19 games - i.e. on Dantley's "watch" - Melo has attempted more than nine free throws in a game just five times.  Melo is savvy and smart enough at this point in his career to know what to do on an NBA court without needing a coach to bark at him during the game.  But that doesn't mean he isn't lazy when not coached properly.

Billups - as a result of too much playing time or putting too much pressure on himself to be the coach on the floor in Karl's absence - has failed us with ill-timed jumpers and inaccurate shooting.  For the 15th consecutive game tonight, Billups shot less than 50% from the field and fell in love with the three-pointer, even though he hasn't been hitting shots consistently from behind the arc.  J.R. Smith was red hot off the bench, and yet Billups and his Nuggets teammates were unable to get J.R. the ball enough in the first half.

And as long as Nene continues to pull his disappearing act in big games, the Nuggets are doomed.  In recent "must-win" games at Phoenix, against the Spurs, at Oklahoma City, at Boston and home against the Bucks, check out Nene's points/rebounds totals: 8/4, 3/2, 9/13, 7/5 and 7/10.  It doesn't help when Kenyon Martin is playing defense "El Matador" style as he did in Phoenix tonight.

And I won't let Dantley hang out to dry without commenting on the assistant coaches, as well.  When Karl announced that he'd be taking time off, we were sold on the assistants being ready to take more responsibility so that Dantley could simply manage the game based on all the brilliant offensive and defensive schemes cooked up by young assistants like John Welch, Chad Iske, Jamahl Mosley and Larry Mangino and the legendary, Yoda-esque Tim Grgrich.  I think it's fair to ask: what exactly have these guys been doing for the past few weeks while their boss has been unavailable?

As bad as I feel for Nuggets Nation, I feel the worst of all for Coach Karl.  Maybe it's because I've gotten to know him and know the man he is.  Or maybe I'd feel this way about anyone in his situation.  But here's Karl fighting to get back into that smelly basketball gym just for one more chance at a championship ring, and his coaches and players couldn't keep the ship afloat enough to give Karl a decent shot at coaching in the second round.  Karl's grave illness should have been an inspiration to this team, but instead proved only that the Nuggets are rudderless without him.

Fortunately for us all, the season ain't over yet.  The playoffs haven't even begun.  We don't even know who we're playing.  The Nuggets could take care of Utah or Phoenix in Round 1, home or road.  It's certainly not a stretch to say otherwise.

By not having to play tomorrow alongside the rest of the NBA, the Nuggets have an extra day to decide if they want to play like champions or not.  An extra day to decide if they want to win a playoff series to bring their coach back or not.  Count me in as being highly suspect for this team's chances to do anything meaningful in the postseason.  But 53 wins and a top-five seed, at least historically, is nothing to sneer at.  As long as you make the most of that opportunity.

Go Nuggets.  (And go Suns tomorrow so we can open at home against the Jazz in the playoffs!)

Cant blame the refs on this stinker

Usually I am the one of first persons to damn the refs, but tonight they weren’t as terrible as the nuggets playing horrible defense. Bad refs or not they cant make the ball go into the basket that happens when only one guy (AAA) is playing D.

I still think this team has a chance at a championship, but the big men have to show up and stop complaining because it seems like the refs are gonna ignore you anyways. We can only hope that the division crown can be our. I dont like the Utards but when the division is on the line they will fight for it tomorrow night, all I can say is go suns.

I have never been so ashamed to be a Nuggets game

I’ve been defending Bird’s ass all season long and it’s obviously clear that he’s not the same man he was last year.
‘Melo b*tches too much.
Nene is too f*cking soft
Chauncey’s worn down
Kenyon Martin missed a good portion of the season.
I can go on and on.

And it’s official, if Utah wins tomorrow, not only do we lose the Division, but we hate a date with the team that blew us out three out of the four games. I’m about to call it quits.

in all honesty

i’m trying really hard to be optimistic. i suppose i’ll let my suns grudge down for an evening and root for them to beat the jizz, giving us what should be a more favourable matchup. maybe if the team somehow gets its shit together between now and the start of the playoffs, they might be able to do something. MAYBE.

but i’m fully expecting adrian dantley to chuck norris my dream to oblivion. with some help from AC and tacos.

Not too harsh.

The Nugs are supposedly men after all, and professionals, but they come off as adolescent primadonnas with a sense of entitlement. No fierce hunger to win, or even much evidence they strive to be their best.

I know if I put in that kind of effort at my job, not only would I put my patients at risk, I would lose my job and probably my license. And I make a mere fraction of the lowest paid Nugget. I wish they would realize that life becomes EASIER when you strive to be your best, although the early stages require the commitment to that goal and discipline to get there. I just don’t see that from the Nugs.

The Nugs need to grow the fuck up.

I agree with you Andrew.

This team gave up on itself. And it has been disheartening to watch, big game after big game, big loss after big loss. You would have thought they had more character. You would have thought they had more pride. You would have thought they had more commitment. They just don’t. They haven’t all year; not in Sacramento, not in MN, not in LA (Clippers) or Milwaukee or DC or Philly or Detroit. They lost their hunger. They lost their passion. And they’ve lost their way.

fundamentals

Are something really good teams can fall back on when the talent well runs dry, I feel certain key players (Nene especially) try to rely too much on intangibles (steals etc) than just doing what good basketball players do. Unfortunately it bit us tonight. I hope EVERYONE realizes now how much of a genius George Karl must be to get the team to win despite our now obvious deficiencies. If only he hadn’t been put in the situation we now find ourselves in. I really hope he can do for us next year what he was able to do this year.

Get well soon George!

PS… Trade Nene ASAP! I’m not even kidding, I realized tonight that he’s just not playing for the nuggets’ fans or his team, he’s playing “for God” and guess what? God doesn’t know how to box out or contest offensive rebounds.

PPS… sorry God

by InboundingLobPass on Apr 13, 2010 11:57 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

nene was non existant

but he had 6 shot attempts. im not exactly sure how much times he actually touched the ball and yes he does dissappear at times, but when the shots are not falling we need to go into the post. at least get the defense to collapse a little.

our starting PG had ZERO assists, ZERO!

by the time i got home, we were already down 14. im not sure how we started out, but i assume there was very little passing again. fuck, it doesnt take a genius to figure out that we only win when we pass the ball and play semi-decent D. but the nuggs like to do things the hard way.

hanzlik said it best in post-game, “our 3 primary ball handlers are chauncey, melo and jr. they combined for 54 shots and 3 assists! players like AAA suffer when that happens.”

"abandoning ship"

All year long there’s been some of us trying to make the point that a lack of optimism DOES NOT CONSTITUTE “ABANDONING SHIP,” it DOES NOT MEAN WE’RE RESCINDING OUR FANDOM OF THE TEAM, it just means we don’t feel optimistic.

Probably by now if that hasn’t gotten across, it’s never going to. But I will repeat one last time: I’ve been a Nuggets fan for over 20 years now. I rooted for them every single game of the 11-71 year. I’ve never transferred allegiance to another team. I’ve rooted for them in all 53 wins and all 29 losses this year, and I’ll be rooting for them in the playoffs this weekend.

AND, I don’t like their chances, regardless of opponent or arena.

Great point made

about the whole coaching staff. The playoffs are here and what do we know about our team. Are Tacos and AC still in the rotation? Who is the backup point guard? Will Petro continue to have a role if Kenyon returns? BALKMAN PLAYED.

A combination of booze and homerism leads me to believe we could still win a series against Utah with home court. But, I’m not sure they deserve it and I’m 84% sure they are a 5 seed. They can be a dangerous 5 seed, but I honestly would not be the least bit surprised in a first round sweep, which is funny because for me the difference between that and a championship could have been one game. But it wasn’t. And all of those stupid losses finally managed to build up and ruin what could have been a truly kickass regular season.

Is it totally inexcusable to lose maybe the biggest game in franchise history before the opening tip? Yeah, but you just have to man up and laugh it off. This team has what they need to be great, if they win a series Karl could possibly come back. If you can;t handle a single heartbreaking no-show, you have a way short term memory for a Nugs fan. Just get behind them or make a like a tree and get the hell outta here

I don't think it came down to just this one game or the games lost to sub .500 teams

Look at the games over the past 5 weeks. Everytime there was a “biggest game of the season” the Nuggets laid an egg. @ Dallas to secure the 2 seed after a exhausting road trip, this last week’s game against the Spurs and tonight against the Suns. All in all the entire team failed to show up in all of these games. Not just one player, but the whole team. I don’t know…I’m just frustrated and disappointed

Yeah.

Though it was funny when that story broke with the fishy “Former Ball Boy” angle (before it was revealed he was Smith’s driver). And it took about 30 seconds to figure who on this team would’ve been dumb enough to pull that crap. The detective work going down like…

Chauncey? No fuckin way.

Melo? No, he’s busy mostly with Carmelo-type shit.

Arron? Nope. He’s too busy working in the gym, being a pro.

Joey, AC, Petro, or Malik? Forget that. They’re just happy to have the job.

Birdman? No, the Popcorn in the car prank is too old and dumb. Bird’s prank would be something crazier.

Naldo? Very possibly. We’re gettin there. But he’s too sleepy.

JR? …. Goddamnit JR.

Suns vs. Jazz tomorrow night

If it were Popovich and the Spurs in the Suns’ place tomorrow, I’m 95% sure he would tank the game by resting Duncan & Co. just to get to the Nuggets. However, I don’t think that’s the kind of DNA Nash is walkin around with. That’s my hope. Beat the Jazz. If we wind up against this Phoenix team, I’m afraid we’ll be serenading them with “Beat LA” chants sooner rather than later.

looking back

this is even more frustrating when you look at the great games this team had:

-beating SA on their floor without melo
-beating LA twice; blowing them out in the can and winning in staples without melo
-the duel between melo and lebron
-blowing out dallas
-beating utah 3 times, once without melo AND billups

that was all in this season. this same season which started off so incredibly and has ended up being so bad in the end. it’s absolutely mindboggling what has happened in just one month. the fire. the swagger. gone. just like that.

i’m so close to jumping ship. but i just can’t. it’s gutless. just like this damn team right now. sad thing is, we could probably shower them with as much criticism as we want, and they still wouldn’t give a shit. if their coach getting cancer hasn’t inspired them to, then nothing will.

LOL....this was copied and pasted from Andrew's game #82 recap against the Blazers last season...(opponent and shooting stats have been changed to reflect tonight's game

losing to the Suns isn’t the biggest deal in the world. But after a season full of “big bang” moments, I just thought it was unfortunate that the Nuggets ended it with a whimper…and a 13-28 shooting night from Carmelo Anthony, a 5-13 night from Chauncey Billups and a 4-13 night from J.R. Smith. That being said, I have to admit that I was yelling at the TV screen: “Dantly, sit the starters!!” with just two minutes played in the third quarter. So I can’t complain too much that the reserves turned a minor blowout into a big blowout by the time the game was over.

It shouldn’t be this close in the West if Nuggz took care of business against -.500 teams. Now we are in a hole that we would be starting the playoffs in the road against the Suns who have our number all season or maybe if we are a little bit lucky, we may begin post-season at home against Utah Jazz which split the season series against the blue-n-golds. I’m looking forward to the possibility that the Nuggs FO would get rid of Nene and get some big bodies who play rough ala Dennis Rodman.

As a pretty passionate Suns fan...

Like the rest of the NBA, I’ve been watching the Nuggets’ tumultuous end to the season. It would be hard for any team to transition quickly after having their coach taken from them so quickly and tragically (get well soon, Karl).

But, although I do acknowledge that I may be looking at a glass half full, this isn’t a terrible conclusion to the regular season for your Denver team, by any means, especially considering what has occurred.

Remember – a 5th seed isn’t anything to scoff at. More importantly, this western conference is so competitive right now, that I really think that, on any given day, the 8th seed is more than capable of beating the 1st seed any day of the week. It’s just a matter of courage, heart and discipline. That’s not something that I think the Eastern Conference can duplicate.

And really, I’m just a pretty blind fan, so I’m still under the impression that my Suns are gonna go out and crush Utah tomorrow. To hell with potential match-ups – I want them to go out and shoot for a W. Such is the case, you’ll get the pleasure of knocking the Jazz out on your home court next week.

I love my Nuggets.

No matter what happens this season, I have Chauncey Billups, Ty Lawson, Arron Afflalo, and Carmelo Anthony to look forward to watching next year. This has been an incredibly rough season with Karl’s cancer and the injuries that have taken key cogs out of this team at the most inopportune times.

I think to discount the Nuggets in the playoffs is sheer folly. They have mustered some incredible road wins this year and let us not forget – there are no back to back games in the playoffs.

Nevertheless, it is a tough row to hoe for our Nuggets, but I am behind them all the way.

re. Dantley

I just want to throw this out there. Amongst the other 15 playoff teams, imagine any of them losing their head coach for the last quarter of the season. How would they fare? How would their assistants do in place of the head coach?

I would’ve loved it too if the Nuggets could’ve drawn inspiration from Karl’s battle with cancer…

Wait, actually, they did exactly that. Right after he left the team, didn’t they go on a 6-game winning streak?

But asking them to sustain that for the remainder of the season and into the playoffs, I don’t know man. Isn’t that asking a LOT? Dantley’s been doing the best he can, I suppose, and it often hasn’t been very good, but yeah, who’s the assistant coach in this league who would’ve kept things going and had the Nuggets clinching the 2 seed or maybe even fighting a struggling l*kers team for the 1 seed in the last week?

Someone tell me if I’m way off here, I dunno, I’m trying to make sense of all this.

by ParkHillNative on Apr 14, 2010 1:22 AM MDT reply actions

I agree 100%

Bottom line is that Dantley wasn’t quite ready for this, and still has a long way to go if he wants to someday be a head coach. But I am with you, I think we did about as good as we could minus our general.

let me sum it up for you top to bottom

the front office- there is only one thing i disagree with and it is a huge issue. karl’s contract not being settled before the season started. nuggets had a situation where the inmates were running the insane asylum. case in point was earl smith not being suspended. last season melo refused to come out of a game and was suspended. smith walks out during the game and nothing happens. the front office did not support the coaches and the players knew it. the coaches- still the best staff in the nba INCLUDING ADRIAN DANTLEY. the head coach did not get backed up by the front office. the assistant has no leverage in a situation he was put in. the only player that would have had his back was kmart. he was not playing the majority of the games ad was coaching. listening to the radio broadcasts of the nuggets game had ad’s post game interviews. 3 statements he made sum up the season. melo can play defense WHEN HE WANTS TO. jr is jr. we talked to him about taking taking 3 point shots late in a blow out and embarrassing the other team. we talked since the beginning of the season about passing, rebounding and playing defense. dantley has been around along time, is a hall of fame player, played in some of the biggest basketball games in history and played with and against some of the greatest players of all time. dantley knew better then anybody he was in no position to impose his will. the players- forrest gump once said life is like a box of chocolates. you never know what you are gonna get. that applies to earl smith. nobody knows what you get with smith including earl himself. billups- because of smith’s suspension he was forced to play shooting guard. he never got out of shooting mode all season. the final regular season game is a classic example. 33 minutes of playing time and zero assists for a starting point guard in the nba. the nuggets did not need an encore performance of allen iverson or a player coach. melo- he will never be an mvp or nba champion unless his defensive game catches up to the level of his offensive game. he had 18 rebound in a single game last month. kenyon martin- this season’s mvp for denver. he is worth all the money he is paid and earned every last penny. the rest of the team- you could not have a better group of teammates anywhere. enough said. the final game of the regular season could be an important lesson for this team. THEIR BIGGEST OPPONENT AND WORST ENEMY IS THEMSELVES.

This lesson has been right in front of them all season to learn

Damn near every one of the 29 losses have the Nuggets beating themselves on some level. If they don’t have the mental toughness to move past this then, this group never will. Does the team need to be blown up? I don’t think so…but with questions about Kroenke surenduring the team to family to make a bid on the Rams, I wouldn’t be surprised if some personnel moves were made.

Anyway, those are questions for the off-season, and we still have playoff basketball.

Thinking about the Coaching situation...

Of the 30 teams, 19 of them have assistant coaches on staff who were once NBA head coaches. And that is not counting Del Harris in New Jersey (who resigned mid-season) or Tim Floyd in New Orleans (who took the UTEP job. [Incidentally, the Hornets coaching staff does sport Robert Pack and Robert Werdann]).

It’s just Nugg luck that we would be one of the one’s without and wind up in the unfortunate situtation we find ourselves in.

Couldn’t we have backed the money truck up to Doug Moe’s front door and begged him to come hop on? Hell, he may have done it for free just to help out George. Is it too late to bring Moe in for the playoffs? We know he knows this team. Of course, that might also be why he chooses to stay away.

Come on, Doug, do it for George!

Jazz versus suns

The suns will tank this game. They have the nuggets figured out. Plus then the NBA ie Stern doesn’t have to “fix” things against the nuggets. It’s a win-win or should I say lose-win for everyone but the nuggets. Side note is the nuggets end up the 4 if suns win and 5 if jazz win right?

THE SUNS WILL NOT TANK...

…against the Jazz. Remember, the third-seed is key. Whoever wins tonight gets to face Portland in Round One and gets to be on the opposite side of the bracket as the Lakers. Yet another reason why the Nuggets HAD to win last night, but didn’t have the courage, heart or game plan to do so.

re. Spurs

Earlier in the season, the Nuggets seemed to have no fear of the Spurs whatsoever, and beat them pretty soundly both times in San Antonio.

Really, the mismatch with the Suns is just absolutely perplexing. How can the Nuggets look like a championship contender vs. the Lakers and like a high school team vs. the Suns? I get it that some teams match up better than others and all, but the degree to which the Suns have just toyed with the Nuggets this year has been absolutely ridiculous. It seemed like they could’ve beaten the Nuggets by 60 points last night if they’d wanted to. We should thank them for taking it easy after the 18-2 start.

by ParkHillNative on Apr 14, 2010 10:55 AM MDT up reply actions

The NBA is 100% about matchups

The reason the Nugs had it so easy in the playoffs last year was due to matchups. The reason the Nugs lost to the Clippers a couple years ago was due to matchups. Matchups determine the course of the NBA playoffs. We all can only hope that the Nugs tanked the game last night on purpose so they could get Utah and LA and avoid the Spurs and Suns till the conference finals. I know it seems like a pipe dream but this scenario may be better than the 3 seed for the Nugs. Remember, the Nugs got wiped out by the new look Mavs too. I am hanging onto this as my last hope that someone in the organization has a clue what they are doing right now.

Western Conference

Andrew, I don’t think you give the Suns enough credit. They are a good team playing great basketball right now. Are they going to win the Championship…maybe? The West is so close right now, that I envision each of the first round matchups going at least 6 games (if not 7). Every team has their strengths and weaknesses. Suns like to run and gun, San Antonio the opposite. Even when the Nuggets are on top of their game, they are one of the best teams in the league. It all comes down to execution.
I understand last night’s game stunk. Down 18-2 in the first quarter?! Don’t think we’ve seen that all season.
However, with the experience they gained last year, I truly feel the Nuggets have a good chance to get out of the first round. Yes, they have to play a lot better and more consistent. But that’s where Billups, Melo and Kenyon strenghs lie, and they will carry our team to the second round. It won’t be easy (like I said, be ready for a 6 or 7 game series), but there won’t be any team in the West getting a free ride out of the first round.

Positive

Haven’t posted in a while and my instinct is to write a negative post; however,…

…on the bright side, these Nuggets still have one of the most talented teams in the league and have provided many of us with some very bright spots throughout the season. If all goes very, very well and things align perfectly, they still have a shot to make some waves. I still remember the Stiffs Night Out when they trounced the Lakers and all was well in the world. Any team that can do that has a shot.

I’m not saying the PLANNED it this way, but it seems like this scenario fits them better than the others (but not preferred)

1. im optimistic we can beat the jazz with homecourt. rivarly series and we have confidence against them. ty has played well against the jazz. and boozer hurt his ribs last night, not sure what the out come will be.

2. if, BIG IF, we get past the jazz, most likely we face the lakers. fisher is like the only PG in the western conference that will not eat up chauncey billups (i know ive gotten ripped for this before, but i see no D or hustle from chauncey except for a few weakside rotations against memphis). lakers dont run as much pick n roll as other western conf. teams that kill us.

If they get the 4 seed…that sets up a pretty nice set of games for the Nugz….because, like I said, they don’t fear the Lakers.

This is what is wrong with the Denver Nuggets

even when they win, they aren’t playing the right way. This is because Karl has said numerous times that he will take the result if it’s a win, and be happy about it, no matter how the game was played. (A win is a win).

Larry Brown is the opposite. Even if you win by 30 points, he will tear you a new one if you play the wrong way. He would rather lose playing the right way. This style prevents games like tonight.

Denver lives and dies by the outside jump shot. If that doesn’t go in, they don’t have a chance. They might as well flip a damn coin at tipoff to decide the winner.

by jb22 on Apr 14, 2010 9:42 AM MDT reply actions

this is why karl's contract issue was critical

he has no leverage. why should any player listen to a coach that may not be around next season. larry brown is a great example. it is his way or the highway. ownership and the front office included. why do you think he has had so many different coaching jobs? look at the way the spurs are coached. popovich is vice president, general manager AND coach. if a player does not do things his way pop has all kinds of options. do not run the play he calls the player can get fined. the nuggets coaches would have to go to the front office and request that move. the bulls situation is another example. john paxson got physical with the head coach because he played noah too many minutes. there is no doubt in my mind rex chapman was micro manging the starting lineups. when earl smith walk out during the game it was chapman that brought him back on the court. the only option karl had was not to play him. no fine or suspension for a move like that. until the front office backs up the coaches the player have no incentive to cooperate.

Here's what the Nuggets need to do...

LOOSEN UP!
I know that’s going to sound like the exact opposite of what they need to do, but it’s not, trust me. They are all wound so tight right now that they’ve forgotten that it’s just a god damn game. Nene is too afraid to shoot the ball, Chauncey and Melo are too afraid to pass the ball, and JR is too afraid that people might mistake him for a good basketball player.
Denver needs to rebound and be stronger in the paint. After Afflalo got 13 boards in the Memphis game, why did he change his gameplan in the Suns game? There were at least a dozen rebounds that ALL of the Nuggets left on the court. I couldn’t count the number of times where the Nuggets put up a shot and they were all at halfcourt before the ball touched iron. A handful of times the ball bounced EXACTLY where a Nugget was standing just a moment before. But if you hang around to try to get an offensive rebound you actually have to run back to cover your man. That’s too much effort.
But, give the Suns credit, they shot lights out and manhandled Denver. This wasn’t about coaching. I felt that AD put the right guys on the court at the right time, they just didn’t execute.

We’re also the only team in the Western Conference playoffs to have a losing road record… not a good sign for a potential road matchup against either Utah (one of the best home records in the league) or Phoenix (Nuggets now 0-13 in PHX in the GK era).

Honestly though, I think the Suns will pull it off tonight, as they’re really in a groove. I think they’d rather have Portland in a series than us even though they’ve pretty much owned us all season… Portland’s just ripe for the picking with Roy hampered by injury. Let’s hope they go take care of business in Utah.

by Stumbleweed on Apr 14, 2010 9:58 AM MDT reply actions

the road record looks bad primarily because of the following losses:

milwaukee
NY
detroit
washington
NO
LAC
sacramento x2

the nuggets have actually done a decent job beating good teams on the road (outside of the suns obviously) but that is a horrible amount of bad losses. throw in a couple of bad home losses to teams like minnesota and philadelphia and you have the present situation. teams will have their stinkers against bad teams (see dallas vs. NY at home), but to throw as many games away as this team has this season is unacceptable.

by goldennuggets on Apr 14, 2010 10:08 AM MDT up reply actions

SWITCHING!

Also, god dammit, if we draw the Suns, we CANNOT do that switching garbage on every play. They just murdered us with those mismatches. It works against certain teams (when it’s well-executed and is combined with a ton of ball pressure and doubling like the NO series last year), but against a team with 4 3PT (or very long mid-range in Hill/Amar’e’s case) shooters on the floor basically at all times, it’s a recipe for disaster because there’s no way you can close out that quickly every time to stop a jumper. So frustrating to continually see a guard switched onto Amar’e or a big get smoked by Nash.

by Stumbleweed on Apr 14, 2010 10:02 AM MDT reply actions

I hate the switching as well...drives me mad.

It has never really worked for the Nuggets and it’s their primary philosophy and it’s a disaster and creates instant match up problems. I thought it lost us the Lakers series last year when they went to it in Game 5 and Game 6.

I agree about the Lakers series. It’s a good strategy when there’s a dominant penetrating PG who you have to control (I think it would actually be decent against San Antonio), but when the PG is surrounded by a bunch of shooters and one major finisher inside, it’s a no-win situation when you switch. Or when there’s no dominant PG that you need to control (i.e. Lakers) it’s a pointless strategy that just causes mismatches and offers no real benefits. Why they continue to go to it is beyond me, it seems like it always results in a loss unless the other team is just shooting horribly and missing the inevitable wide-open looks.

Go Suns!

we match-up very well with Utah and a home series is always nice. Then I don’t care when we play LA, knocking them out in round 2 might not be as satisfying as the WCF but it’s still knocking off the motherfuckin Lakers. If we beat LA it doesn’t matter who we get in the WCF, we will have our swag back. The biggest task is getting by round 1 w/o GK, if we do and GK comes back for the Lakers we could see a very motivated and inspired(and well coached of course) Nuggets team just when we need them. So go Suns and make this all possible.

Couple of commennts from a Nuggets and Suns fan

1) The OP is nuts if he honestly thinks that the Denver’s bench is better than Pheonix’s bench. NUTS. I’m very excited about some guys on Denver’s bench, but the Suns have a much stronger bench … rating on a scale of 1 – 10 the Nuggets bench is a 7 and the Suns bench is a 9 easily.

2) Denver does NOT want to play Pheonix in the 1st round. If they do play each other, the Suns will be eating Denver’s cookies for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Cheer the Suns on so we can play Utah who we have a much better chance of going to the 2nd round.

3) What is up with Billups??? Dude just looked empty last night!

4) Afflallo looked great…that kid is going to be something special for sure.

You're way too overconfident

First of all, your bench is good, but do you have a guy on your bench that can drop 40 on any given night? No. What you have is a lot of hustly guys, which isn’t a bad thing but they won’t win games single handedly like JR can.

And secondly, you will NOT eat anything of ours for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Although the Suns are a great team and my second favorite team, they arn’t built for the playoffs like Denver is. You need to be tough come playoff time and Phoenix is still hurting from the time Robert Horry laid Nash out. I’m not saying Phoenix can’t beat Denver, I’m just saying it’s going to be a close series.

Having someone like Dudley coming off the bench, playing defense, rebounding, AND nailing threes at a ridiculous 46% on the season, that’s a huge advantage… Frye is shooting 44% and has made a ton. We have NOBODY like that… Afflalo is the closest to a knockdown shooter -wise that we have, and that’s kinda depressing. I mean damn, they have 6 key rotation players shooting over 39 for the season from deep, that’s just bananas. How we can we compete with that when we have really only Afflalo converting at that kind of rate? We’re obviously a different kind of team (driving as opposed to shooting), but when teams pack the paint, you need guys that can spread the floor and make them pay. We’re so damn inconsistent in that regard… sometimes JR, Chauncey, and Melo all catch fire with the jumper and we run teams off the floor, but that convergence is extremely rare. Bottom line is that we need some shooters — like REAL shooters, not “I’m hot every 5 games and nail 7 threes” shooters like JR. I’m not saying that we should trade him or anything, but he’s clearly not living up to expectations as just a 3PT shooter… he’s lightning in a bottle some games when he’s driving as well, but his jumper just isn’t reliable enough as a spot-up guy.

JR killed us this year with his erratic shooting… 33% is just pathetic for a guy who’s supposed to be our long-range gunner. We could go get freakin Kyle Korver and have him stand still in the corner and he’d put in 45% at least… very disappointed with JR this year even though his game did grow. He didn’t fill his required role for us though, bottom line.

I've been saying for a long time...

….that JR’s problem is that he is missing Kleiza! Last year JR had the luxury of another scoring threat off the bench so he wasnt SO heavily relied on to score off the bench. This year he is asked to basically be the sole scoring threat off the bench and he’s trying too hard!

I think at least.

the other problem is lawson vs. ac

ac can put smith in his place. lawson is a rookie and has his hands full with that. it is difficult for management, coaches and veterans keeping earl under control. last season smith averaged 15 ppg and kleiza 9.9 ppg. lawson was averaging about 9 ppg.

WHAT!?

Are you kidding me? Yeah, the Suns don’t have JR, but what they do have is guys that CONSISTENTLY perform. JR is the one guy I want to see shipped off this off-season. He’s good in spurts, but he doesn’t perform consistently at all.

If Phoenix is your 2nd favorite team, how do you say tha 2nd statement?

The Suns are playing their best defense in years easily. You are crazy if you think any of the following:

1) The Suns can’t compete in the playoffs this year

2) The Suns don’t have Denver’s number

3) The Suns are still hurting from some playoff game well over a year ago

Don't get too cocky

Yeah, you have our # this year, but the playoffs bring a different type of atmosphere.

The game of basketball is so mental

If the Nugs can win Game # 1 of the first playoff series, they might get their confidence back.

Last night and against the Spurs, the Nugs looked like a team in disarray.

Nuggets Nation is way too pessimistic

Alright, first of all Andrew the world has not come to an end. Yes the Nuggets blew this one, hard. But I firmly believe that were if any other team the Nuggets would have come out and played a hell of a lot better. It just seems that during the regular season Phoenix has had our number. But if we do match up with them in the playoffs things can definitely change. A playoff series is an entirely different monster than one game here and there. Teams can get into the other’s head, build momentum and start a whole new chapter in their book. It happens all the time in sports, so I am not that worries as EVERYONE ELSE IN NUGGETS NATION SEEMS TO BE!!!

Also, the Suns are a damn good team. There is a reason they are where they are now. They play sound, fundamental basketball, but they arn’t that hard to figure out. They pass a lot which goes through Nash, and hit the three very well. If we play good defense on the pick and roll and don’t allow them to hit the three and defend passing lanes well, we will have them. Still, I’m worried about AD and his deficiencies as well as not having home court if Utah wins tonight. Those could be prime recipes for a huge disaster, but we will cross that bridge when we get there.

In general, I just want to say, chill people. I remember last year when we lost to Portland last game of the year, I was pretty shocked, and although that was an entirely different situation it seems clear to me that the Nuggets plain and simple are just ready to get it on in the playoffs. This team is incredibly mental, which is a gift and a curse, but if we find out how to bring out the gift more than the curse we all know what that means.

GO NUGS!!!!

"I'm kinda grumpy today, dude. I didn't get a lot of sleep last night. I was having those dreams again. Ya know, how it's just me in a castle and I gotta fight, like, a thousand wizards and the only way to beat them is to punch them as hard as I can in their faces. Then, when I'm done, all their little wizard wives came out and wanted me to have sex with them - which is kinda weird."

Big thanks to AAA for being the only Nugget worth a damn over the past week.

Dark Cloud Over Nuggets Nation

Let’s face it, our Nuggs are not playing well and have played in a funk for the last 6 weeks or so. They just don’t seem to be a happy group. Melo has been down and unhappy for weeks ( something up with za za , ga ga, or whatever her name is?). Cb seems tired. Nene has become very soft and can’t finish( can someone play him some Moses Malone tapes please??). JR hoists up bad shot after bad shot. Kenyon seems a long way from being back where he was. And Bird is a medical mess right now. A quick first round exit will merit some serious changes to our aging roster.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
