Looks like its Cook

Hoops World story here by Travis Heath.

I sure hope this pans out.  The article does not say if this will be a 10 day deal or longer, but I suppose that will depend on Martin's health status.

Cook has been a respectable shooter in the past, but he's only 6'9" and not known as a force in the post.  It seems that the plan is to use French Resistance to shore up the middle and use Cook to stretch the D.  Cook also knows tthe Lakers system, and familiarity should help him help us when we face them.

I've got my fingers crossed for Martin, and hope the time off and therapy he is receiving will allow him to return at the same level.  He's one tough mofo, putting up carreer numbers while suffering through up to this point.

Thoughts?

well, ok

If the dude can play a little better than Tacos, then I guess a 10-day contract isn’t the worst thing in the world.

by ParkHillNative on Mar 9, 2010 10:51 AM MST reply actions

check the vid in the folloing post

Cook is more than a ‘little better’ than Tacos, IMO.

by Ski Bum on Mar 9, 2010 11:11 AM MST up reply actions

Haha, anytime the majority of a guy’s play in his youtube highlight clip is him catching and shooting wide open jumpers from 17 feet, it’s not a good outlook for his career.

by aLuffabo on Mar 9, 2010 11:28 AM MST up reply actions

How many teams did he play for?

He’s wearing half of the western conference jerseies in that reel. He looks taller than 6’9" though, and dude has a little weight to him too. maybe he can teach French Fry how to eat chili fries…One more thing, the comments at the bottom of the montage are pretty funny.

by Joelsopinion on Mar 9, 2010 1:43 PM MST up reply actions

True

…and most of that is from years ago, too. But there were several blocks and defensive plays on there that look encouraging. The Nugs plan to use him as a stretch forward, so his shooting ability is a plus. He seems to be more athletic than Tacos, but we’ll have to wait and see…

Like I said, I hope this pans out.

by Ski Bum on Mar 9, 2010 11:34 AM MST reply actions

sold

Just from the youtube clip, I’d say he’s worth a try.

by ParkHillNative on Mar 9, 2010 11:35 AM MST up reply actions

No doubt, I think he’s a decent pickup, he can rebound and shoot. He should be able to get some solid open looks from 3, and if he can knock them down, would be a good addition to spell our bigs.

I just have to laugh when someone puts together a player montage video of routine wide open shooting.

by aLuffabo on Mar 9, 2010 4:57 PM MST up reply actions

He'd be a good fit

If he gets hot in the playoffs then he could really end up being a great signing.

by Gasus on Mar 9, 2010 11:43 AM MST reply actions

Exactly

I really don’t even understand why we would sign him if he’s not going to play. It would suck being Balkman if this guy comes in and gets playing time right away.

by GoldenNugget on Mar 9, 2010 1:13 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah, I've got concerns too

I just checked out a bunch of scouting reports on him, most of which are quite dated. He is described as having limited dimentionality, primarily a face up shooter with questionable athleticism and D, not strong enough to guard back to the basked post players or quick enough to guard stretch 4’s.

The only thing I remember of him was during the Gary Payton Lakers days, and he had a great scowl.

I hope he’s not over the hill.

by Ski Bum on Mar 9, 2010 12:29 PM MST up reply actions

but then again, Tacos Allen seems over the hill

My parapalegic grandmother has more athleticism than Tacos.

by Ski Bum on Mar 9, 2010 12:36 PM MST up reply actions

Isn't he like 28?

Don’t think he is over the hill if he is 28.

by Gasus on Mar 9, 2010 1:14 PM MST up reply actions

Don’t we have enough shooting already? I honestly have never even heard of this guy but from reading up about him it’s clear he’s the exact opposite of K-Mart, not what we need. What we need is a tough, defensive minded player who can bang (ie; BALKMAN!).

Dude is a bomber. I don’t see why you wouldn’t like another big that can stretch the floor… By adding Cook they add another dimension to their offense and maybe they will even match up better with LA because of it. Think about the open driving lanes for Melo, CB, JR, and Lawson.

by Gasus on Mar 9, 2010 1:16 PM MST up reply actions

Dude is a bomber?

Really? If he was such a bomber I’m sure he would have had a more successful career in the NBA. I’m sorry, I just prefer defense over offense. That’s what got us where we are, that’s the real staple of our team. And Malik is a good shooter but he doesn’t necessarily add a “different dimension” to our team when he comes in.

Yeah, but Balks in the doghouse

and doesn’t play as it is. Personally, I think he has the best scam going: getting paid millions for courtside seats and free gatorade service. (Ok, thats in jest, and i have to credit that idea to someone else here, can’t recall who originally said it. And I would love to see Balk get some burn, but it seems that the FO is going to sign Cook regardless.)

I did read a post on a Lakers forum that he’s a chemistry killer, exactly NOT what the doctor ordered for late season personnel shake-ups.

This signing seems like a roll of the dice.

by Ski Bum on Mar 9, 2010 1:27 PM MST up reply actions

Balk

Is a “cancer” in the locker room who half asses it in practice and none of the players are too fond of. This is coming from Hannah Marklin (the girl who JR got real close with who had the terrible disease). She has been in the locker room before and after practices and games many times and has great relationships with a lot of the players notably JR and Joey Graham. She says it as it is and is actully really knowlegable when it comes to the Nuggets. I talked to her for about 2 hours about the players and how they are in the locker room and stuff and was really surprised by some of them…. She said Balkman is def. a team killer though.

Cook is soo much better than Malik Allen it’s not even funny. The Nuggets wanted Cook a year or two ago, offer a TPE or a pick for him and got turned down. I like Cook’s game. A mix of Cook and Petro is Martin’s absence should be fine.

He was in the Starbucks over at 6th/Broadway. He parked it over one spot and on top of the adjacent landscape island, nearly knocking down the sapling on the island. Thing was stupid big.

One of em used to be a semi… When you go to the games, outside on one of the smoking padios on club level you can see the player parking lot. AC has a sick ride and Bird has like 3 different trucks. Last game i was at he had like a blacked out F 350 with a lift kit… it was sweet.

We should continue calling Aaron Cook "Cookie"

Brian Cook could be Brian “He’s more out of shape than Rasheed Wallace” Cook.

Channing Frye continues to be our fry cook.

In all seriousness, AC is probably the best cook out of all the Nuggets’ players.

With Ty and Kenyon out we are also short on practice bodies as well. Believe it or not Malik Allen has gotten a chance here and shown nothing. There is no way this signing hurts the Nuggets

by runningdonut on Mar 9, 2010 4:08 PM MST reply actions

But does it help us?

We need a banger, not a one-dimentional chuckker who doesn’t board or play D.

Trying to be positive here…Cook did shoot very well when assisted (back with the Lakers), but can’t create his own shots. Our strength at the guard position may help him contribute quite well offensively, if he can regain his shooting touch (~40% from deep for his career, but only 22% with Houston, where he was not assisted that much). Maybe the uptempo Nugs style will be synergistic with what he has to offer. But thats a big ‘if’, and if he’s a defensive liability we’re at a net loss.

by Ski Bum on Mar 9, 2010 4:19 PM MST up reply actions

Anyone we sign won't make a huge impact

In fact if all goes well with K-Mart they might not play any meaningful minutes at all

by runningdonut on Mar 9, 2010 6:07 PM MST up reply actions

Hahahahah!!!!

Cooks is so garbage lol all he does is sit there and warm the bench. And when he actually gets in the game all he wants to do is stand at the three point line and shoot. And not to mention he’s one of those guys that may shoot well in practice but when it comes to a actual game he cant shoot at all. I’m a rockets fan and i think you guys should have went for someone else.

by vikesfan4lyf on Mar 9, 2010 4:18 PM MST reply actions

Yep, he floats around the 3 pt line

and as a result, gets like ZERO offensive rebounds. Hope the Tickler acquires a better handle for the ball.

I don’t think the Nugs have many options right now, but if I were in charge I would have tried out Dwayne Jones before signing anyone.

coach karl stated that denver would be experimenting with different line ups. it was established that denver was set at center and had enough players inside. think perimeter. petro, nene and andersen will struggle playing defense outside. melo may wind up being kmart’s replacement. a 2 player rotation at center with andersen and nene. a 3 player rotation at both forward spots. melo, cook and graham. put in that context getting cook makes sense. nene has been playing 8 minute rotations since the start of the season. petro and nene on the floor at the same time will result in them being in each others way.

68 comments about cook shows true fandom

at the same time you guys need to stop thinking this much over a bench filler signing. Cook won’t get many minutes if any and can really only help here and there, if he hurts the team he will get the Balkman treatment right away. In the end this is quite insignificant, K-Mart will return for the playoffs and we will kick the Lakers ass and win the title.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
