Johan Petro deserves to play
Watching the Blazer/Nuggets game last night was interesting. Johan Petro was in the starting lineup for the injured Kenyon Martin, which honestly had me a little concerned. When the game ended, I was relieved.
Petro showed that he can play some ball. Sure, he made mistakes, but he's human too, right?
With Martin sidelined, Bird playing injured and everybody playing too many minutes, I don't see why Petro couldn't play. I can see potential in the man, and so far, he's proven to me that he's able to contribute to the team. If he could get twenty minutes coming off of the bench, not only would Nene and Martin (when he comes back) be able to relax, but he could take some pressure off of Andersen.
The Nuggets are looking for a man who's been sitting on the bench all this time. Why sign and waste money on another player when he's already on your team?
*I still can't believe Portland double-teamed Petro last night. Lol!*

If Kmart doesn't come back
you’re wish will be granted. Karl won’t have much of a choice.

i think we should break the minutes down like this
for center/ PF
PF: Nene (20)/Bird (12)/ Graham (16)
C: Petro (25)/ Bird (10)/ Nene (13)
so it gives nene 33 minutes, which i know is a lot, but we do need him
when/if kmart returns ***fingers crossed
PF: KMArt 28/ Bird 10/ Graham 10
C: Nene 30/ Bird 10/ Petro 8

Give Petro more
Cut Bird’s down to 16 until the playoffs start.

it all depends when those minutes are played
first he played a portland team without their top 3 centers. when nene and petro were in the game at the same time they both struggled offensively. petro had 0 points and nene 3. nene is very limited at the forward position. he could never guard a player like dirk on the perimeter. offensively he plays better inside with his back to the basket. in the half court offense he will struggle playing outside facing the basket. andersen’s problem is he goes for the pump fake when he guards a player on the perimeter. petro will also have major problems defending the pick and roll. defensively he would have major problems inside against stronger and or taller opponents. the blazer game was the perfect storm for petro.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
Nene is too bulky to effectively play PF
Petro on LaMarcus Aldridge wasn’t bad.

Petro does deserve to play
When I watch him I think he looks really nervous out there at times. I think if he had more playing time in the past he would have been more prepared for this situation. I think he’s got talent though. He can knock down the 15 foot j, he can definatly rebound and he is a big time hustler. I think he can actually develope into a solid backup if Karl keeps playing him. I would like to see Balkman get some playing time too but that doesn’t appear to be happening any time soon.
"Jive turkey is a little over the line my man!"
"I'm kinda grumpy today, dude. I didn't get a lot of sleep last night. I was having those dreams again. Ya know, how it's just me in a castle and I gotta fight, like, a thousand wizards and the only way to beat them is to punch them as hard as I can in their faces. Then, when I'm done, all their little wizard wives came out and wanted me to have sex with them - which is kinda weird."
He was on the radio last night on the ride home
During the interview, D-mac and Al were hounding him about why he doesn’t play. His answer “I don’t know”. he said Karl kept telling him ‘Just be ready to play’. It kinda reminded me of how a parent will sometimes dangle a privledge or a toy in front of a child with the ‘Maybe when you’re older’ line.
I think karl see’s that nervous attitude also. Petro is also too nice of a guy on the court. D-mac and Al reminded him like 10 times at the end of the interview “Just remember you’re a big guy out there”, almost hinting at the fact that Petro does play like he’s afraid to be 7 foot tall.

Petro can play here or there
but guys Portland literally has no center. Petro’s 10 rebounds last night were a bit misleading. He’s a decent shooter for a center, and he showed against Dallas he is capable of that little hook thing he does. But he just doesn’t box out. He really doesn’t. Of those 10 rebounds, 3 or 4 were the kind where there was literally no one (Nugget nor Blazer) around Petro and it just bounced to him. He should have had 3 or 4 more, but there were instances where he just jumped to get the ball and someone went around him and got to the ball first.
He can improve, surely, but against teams that are dominant down low, Petro will get eaten alive, despite his size.
I agree wholeheartedly
Petro looked like he wasn’t sure what he could and couldn’t do,
he hasn’t played enough to know what his limitations are… which can be both a good and bad thing.
Bad he doesn’t do the little things that show a refined craft and he doesn’t do some big things that show
a solid understanding of his position.
Good he was really trying to do a lot of stuff that you might not see another player of his size attempt.
For a bonafide 7 footer he was hustling like a madman sometimes down the floor, because he has played so little the rest of the team wasn’t lookin to capitalize on that hustle. Honestly he really does look agile and mobile which is something that doesn’t come naturally to all big men, or even half of them.
Hes a work in progress for sure, but keep working him don’t give up on him.

The "bad" parts can be fixed by more PT and development
He’s our only 7-footer…Nene is more like 6’9", Kenyon is more like 6’8", and Birdman is 6’10" but only 220 pounds. Whoever measures the height of the Nuggets’ big men doesn’t do a very good job…

What does everyone think about Petro's ultimate potential?
When do you think he peaks and what kinds of numbers will he putting up?
My prediction: He’ll reach his peak in a few years as a cheap 4th big for the Nuggets. Something along the lines of 4/6 in 16 minutes of play.
If he bulks up and gets more PT and development
He could replace Birdman as the team’s 3rd big man. Birdman will deteriorate enough by the 4th year of his contract that he just will not be able to be effective. That’s when Petro/somebody else steps in. We will still need a replacement for KMart, and that would be Nene’s last season in the NBA if he sticks to his promise to go back to Brazil and devote the rest of his life to God.

I think with time and on court action...
petro could be a cheap Brendan Haywood actually. Just less of a banger with more athleticism.
he could be and 8 and 8 type of dude…dont know about blocks from him but he is pretty athletic. Playing with ty will only make him look that much better.

If this is a petition...
Consider it signed. I’ve been lobbying for more players off the bench all season to keep stars like Kenyon fresh for the playoffs. And Petro has proved to be a serviceable rebounder when called upon and doesn’t seem to clog up the offense too much.
PS: I also agree with the minutes allocations that some of you posted above. Of course it depends on game situations. I’m actually a big fan of a short rotation in the playoffs. But during the regular season if you are as good as the Nuggets, the starters should be able to build a lead and the back five should be able to keep it. It’s that simple. I think Lawson, Smith, Graham, Bird and Petro have what it takes to spell the stars. I forgot AC, who’s been playing well.
Malik? I dunno right now. I haven’t been too impressed lately. I’ve always liked Balkman. I just feel bad for him at this point. The few times I’ve seen him play this year, I don’t feel justified making the case for getting him out there. I remember him having some hustle last season. What the hell happened?

Petro should start
Until Kenyon gets back. The only way to develop is to play, yeah? And given the Nuggets’ injury situation and worn out frontcourt, there’s no reason why we should keep giving him opportunities to show he’s ready for it.
Swats.
