AIN'T A DAMN THING OVER

I'll be honest - upon hearing the news that KMart could be lost for the year (coupled with the similar, now hopefully false alarm re: Ty Lawson), my initial reaction was something along the lines of "Game over man!  Game over!"

But then I took a deep breath.  And I read the "NUGGETS SEASON OVER" fanpost from the cowardly, pathetic melloyello, who is apparently so pants-wetting terrified of a WCF rematch with Nuggets that he cheers for injuries.  That's when I realized before we all start slitting our collective wrists, we should keep in mind the following:

1. Nothing's for sure yet. Until we hear from the horse's mouth that KMart's shut down for the year, no point in stressing over hypotheticals.

2.  Last season's Houston Rockets.  They lost their TWO premiere players and still managed to take LA to the brink.  It can be done.

3. No guarantees in this league. Yeah, beating a healthy Lakers squad in the WCF with no KMart is a tall order, but there are a lot of assumptions in that scenario. The Lakers bigs have been just as prone to injury over the years as ours, and Kobe's been nicked up all year. Who's to say they don't lose just as big a piece coming down the stretch, or that a hot/scrappy OKC or Phoenix squad doesn't take em out first? That's why they play the games.

4. Joey Graham. He's not KMart and plays more a 3 than a 4, but I think he's got the size, strength and attitude to bang against opponents on D and maybe even add a few new wrinkles on offense. He'll have to step it up, but from what I've seen in his limited minutes this year, I think he could be up to it.

5. The X Factor. Could be anything from Nene playing in beast mode full time to Ty coming back from his (hopefully likewise non-season ending) injury better than ever to JR finally emerging as the full-on superstar we know he can be to the team simply digging deep and finding inspiration in their coach's cancer battle. You never know how circumstances will affect - again, that's why they play the games.

Losing KMart would be brutal, no question, but the bottom line is nothing's over 'til the Nuggets decide it is. If any team has shown an ability to take a punch and battle in the face of the adversity over the last few years, it's them. So long as they don't quit on us, I'm not about to quit on them.

(And to melloyello and any other Laker fans popping champagne over this KMart thing, just remember:  what goes around, comes around.  We'll be seeing you REAL soon.)

Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

Hey wait the germans....

Why live life on the edge, when you can jump off?

Naw just joking

I DO get the animal house reference. That other lakers fan post just further proved wait i surmised from Gasol’s crying a week ago. The lakers and their fans are scared, the last team they want to face is us. Personally I can’t wait to get another shot at them, K-mart or no K-mart

melo and nene need to step up their rebounding

before kmart’s injury denver ranked 17th in rebounding. melo will be getting minutes at power forward. this can help the team long term. with their size and athleticism no way should both players not average a double double. kmart is limited on offense except for his put back dunks. the bench players are better shooters with the exception of balkman.

Good post

I don’t want Melo playing too much PF. We are going to need to follow the buyout bigs from crappy teams and see which one is best. Patience is key, as the better bigs are usually the last ones to be bought out. My dream is that the Pacers are stupid enough to let go of Josh McRoberts, but they aren’t that dumb. He’s like DeAndre Jordan in the sense that he’s a young, athletic big man.

Another reason to hate Kobe, the Lakers, and the NBA in general.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
