As expected... (Nuggets/Pacers recap)

79928_pacers_nuggets_basketball_medium_mediumThe box score readers will wonder how the Pacers only lost by eight to the Nuggets tonight.  Those who watched the game know the outcome was never in doubt.

Star-divide

While tonight's victory over the destitute Indiana Pacers wasn't the snoozer I forecasted in my game preview, I was never concerned about the Nuggets securing the victory.  Their third straight against a sub-.500 team, by the way (and yes, it's somewhat concerning that that's cause for celebration around here).

In hindsight, my pregame description of the Pacers being a collection of white American Stiffs may have been unfair.  Because regardless of the race of the players, this Pacers team stinks.  It's not that all their players are bad per se, it's just that Pacers head coach Jim O'Brien's "system" makes no sense whatsoever.  Rather than utilize his team's youth and athleticism to pester opposing teams into off nights with scrappy hustle play and full court defensive pressure, they basically engage in a Golden State-type fast paced shootout that encourages quick jumpers from any range.

The big flaw in O'Brien's "strategy" is that the Pacers can't shoot straight, evident by their third-to-last field goal percentage in the NBA and fifth-to-last three-point shooting percentage.  Things were no different tonight, when the Pacers made just 44% of their shots.  And that percentage is skewed as the Pacers made a handful of easy, meaningless buckets in the final three minutes of the game, making a 17-point blowout appear to be much closer.

The good news for Nuggets fans is that our team seems to be taking games against lesser opponents seriously at last.  Even with Kenyon Martin and Ty Lawson missing in action tonight, the rest of the Nuggets roster - notably the starters plus J.R. Smith and Chris Andersen - performed as professionals tonight and never allowed it to get dangerously close.

The view from the not-so-cheap seats...

...when former Nuggets Dahntay Jones entered the game, he received a decent applause from the crowd but it wasn't as loud as I had expected considering how hard Dahntay played for us last season.

...Jones' adorable young son high-fived all of the Nuggets as they ran onto the court.  It was a very cool moment.

...throughout the game, Dahntay was yapping with both J.R. Smith and Carmelo Anthony.  Melo could be seen smiling whenever Dahntay tried to guard him and simply lit Dahntay up, proving good offense will always overcome good defense.

...the Pacers Josh McRoberts got a lot of playing time, and in the first half we openly questioned why.  Then in the second half McRoberts showed why he belongs in the NBA with an assortment of athletic moves around the rim, including a spectacular alley-oop dunk.  This kid has serious hops and is anything but the Stiff most experts predicted he'd be when he was drafted out of Duke.

...speaking of spectacular dunks, in all my years watching NBA games I've never seen a dunk thrown down with such rapidness as J.R.'s thunderous jam on Pacers center Roy Hibbert in the fourth quarter.

...Chris "Birdman" Andersen had a terrific game off the bench.  He was active on both ends of the floor and definitely had his legs back.

...Hibbert is a surprisingly good free throw shooter and has nice, almost textbook, form.  So why exactly can't other plus-seven foot centers do the same?

...when Nuggets head coach George Karl brought Melo and J.R. back into the game around the eight-minute mark in the fourth quarter with the Nuggets up 17, a lot of fans wondered why.  in hindsight, the Nuggets were far from sealing this game and Karl absolutely made the right decision.  By having Melo and J.R. in there for about five more minutes, the Nuggets were able to trade baskets and ice the victory.  Good call by the coach here.

...a rarity, the Nuggets players laid off the refs tonight, accepted rather than contested foul calls and this produced a very fair whistle.

When I got home from the game I heard the news that Kenyon Martin might need surgery on his left knee.  I speak for Nuggets fans everywhere when I say I really, really, really, really, really hope this doesn't come to fruition.  It should be noted that, according to Yahoo! Sports' Marc Spears, surgery is being floated out as "among the treatment options".  Let's not push the panic button yet until we get more definitive information.  After all, we don't want our weekends ruined.

Non-Stiffs of the Game

-Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith: Melo and J.R. played great tonight.  In addition to shooting 12-20 from the field, Melo got to the free throw 10 times and only missed one.  Perhaps he's shaken off his recent free throw shooting slump.  J.R. was hot out the gate and even though he shot a bit aimlessly in the second half, his season high eight assists more than made up for it.

Stiff of the Game

-Jim O'Brien: The Pacers have some (emphasis on some) talent, but O'Brien is out of his league trying to coach this team.  Given that all of the Pacers core players are due to be paid next season, too, the Pacers should fire O'Brien now, bring in Avery Johnson and develop a more intense, defensive mentality in Indianapolis.  Until this team takes playing NBA basketball seriously, they're going nowhere anytime soon.

First!

I was at the game tonight in some great seats behind the basket. Wasn’t as intense as the new orleans or cleveland games were that I went to earlier in the year, but was still exciting. and I really hope we hear good news regarding lawson and kmart in the next few days

It was a workmanlike win

Nothing remarkable happened…and Andrew is right, it never once appeared like the Nuggets were in danger of losing this game

Melo was great for the second straight game. JR (outside of the 3 obsession) played quite well and AC had a gasp good game….probably an aberration.

nuggets now 20 games over .500

this is another game cb1 failed to assert himself inside on offense against physically weaker opponents. he shot well from the free throw line and made his presence known on defense with 6 rebounds. smith discovered passing and taking the ball inside is ALMOST as much fun as shooting a 3 pointer. chris andersen stepped up in place of kmart with a double double and very efficient play in less than 27 minutes. ac played a very solid all around game. nene had 5 assists and was efficent at the offensive end. both he and melo need to step up their rebounding while kmart is out.

Get well soon Ty & K-Mart

Dear lord do I ever hope K-Mart doesn’t need surgery.

Glad to see the Nuggets on a little winning streak here. And lest we forget, they’re tied with Dallas in the loss column, so the only reason they’re a half game back is because the Mavs have played one more game.

Time to face facts

The Nuggets are a significantly worse team without Kenyon Martin and Ty Lawson. Yes, I’m glad we’re beating up the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons of the league, now. But with the roadies we have to close out the month, where will our defensive intensity come from? Kenyon’s been pulling down incredible numbers for boards and been our team’s defensive quarterback. Ty Lawson’s speed is going to be sorely missed, and if Carter goes down we’re really screwed.

I just don’t know if the Nuggets can make it to the WCF if both Lawson and Kenyon are done, much less out of the first round.

At this point, I think it might be in the best interests of the players and the team if we just shut Lawson and Kenyon down for the remainder of the season, to at the very least give them ~6weeks to heal, and let ourselves fall – if we do – in the standings. Their careers and futures with the Nuggets are more important than a single 3rd-seed season.

Small lineup with Joey

way better option that starting Malik if everyone can help rebound the ball. A win is good news and we need that now. Against a good team we can’t give that many open looks and foul so much either. CB had to play too much with Ty out and AA in foul trouble. We’re not dead yet by a longshot.

I'm not worried at all about K-Mart

Now that his back is all healed up I’m sure Balkman can step in and pretty much take over all of Martin’s minutes…….

AC...

Isn’t looking so bad.

Still, I’d rather him not get that many minutes when Ty is healthy. Though I don’t hate on AC like a lot of you here, I still much prefer Lawson. If AC can play like he has the last two games, that’s be fine. But that is too much to hope.

AC IS MOTIVATED

I AM one that beats up on AC with regularity and the reason he gets “hate” on so much here is because those of us that watch these games religiously have bore witness to is ineptitude on offence, and ridiculous turn overs that he has a habit of making. Having said that, I applaud his efforts over the last 2 games—Ty, I beleive, deserves some of the credit for this albeit indirectly. Having essentially lost his minutes and then regulated to the bench in place of Ty certainly did not do anything for his morale—particularily since GK was rumoured to have told AC at the beginning of the season that his minutes would not be reduced; and then GK reversing himself as the season progressed and Lawson’s talent was ever present.
Whatever the reason, AC has played exceptionally well the last two games and I hope that will continue when he is inserted.

I agree.

I’m disappointed in Andrew’s recap being absolutely dismissive of ACs contributions last night. Come’on, he shot 6 of 8 (12 points) and had 7 assists with 2 steals and only 2 turnovers. That is a GREAT night for a third string point guard.

ANTHONY (CARTER) FOR 2010 MVP!

If AC continues playing like this, the three-point guard lineup will actually kinda work.

Say, am I the only one who thinks that AC looks like Kenny Smith?

top 10 reasons anthony carter is a great basketball player

10. he has a team first mentality. 9. he plays defense. 8. he passes the ball. 7. he knows the half court offensive plays. 6. he shows up on time for practice. 5. he has a tattoo. 4. he used to live in hawaii just like president obama. 3. he is the rod smith of the nuggets. 2. if chauncey billups is doctor evil of the nba ac is mini me. 1. he can slam dunk a basketball.

Anthony Carter played well last season from the bench

The only advantage Ty Lawson has is speed. If Carter passes the ball and doesn’t shoot like J.R. I’ll be somewhat OK with it. I’d rather see Ty Lawson play, but Carter is a veteran.

Malik Allen is a veteran too...

thats the problem.

a little worried about kmart, hope we hear good news. nice to see karl started joey graham last night.

Against the Blazers

I want to see Joey Graham start again. He’s got the bulk to annoy LaMarcus Aldridge, but LMA’s key move is his turnaround jumper off of a post-up. Afflalo on Roy, but this means that Melo will have a tough job, as he will need to cover Batum, who’s a lot more than a defensive player. Andre Miller/Marcus Camby shouldn’t be a problem, as long as George Karl can convince Camby to go 2-10 from the field, with at least 5 of those FGA being that ugly knuckleball mid-range jumper.

Ty is better than AC

but AC is a little bit better on defense than Ty. Since the Nuggets switch on everything, often times we get our 1 on the other teams 3 or something like that. AC is tough. Ty’s got quick hands, but if the guy starts to drive, Ty might as well be invisible. I’d rather have Ty on the court, don’t get me wrong, but AC was a part of the playoff run last year. He can’t have been THAT terrible.

STIFF LIST (as of 1/30 by Jeff Morton)

1. THE ORLANDO MAGIC
After starting the season so well with the Dwight Howard trade drama (10-3) - the Magic have fallen apart (2-5 since) with embarrassing losses to the Celtics (twice), Hornets, and Pacers. Trade Dwight already!

2. CHAUNCEY BILLUPS' FLOP VS. NUGGETS
In the waning seconds of Sunday's game against the Clippers, Chauncey pulled off an acting performance so good it deserved an Academy Award. If he was still a Nugget we would love it, but he's not. STIFF!

3. JIMMER FREDETTE
Dude, if you are going to take the game-winning shot, at least draw some iron: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNO1goJOruQ

4. GEORGE KARL'S 4TH QUARTER AGAINST THE CLIPPERS
Getting out coached by Vinny Del Negro should be a nice wake-up call. Going away from Gallo. Leaving Al Harrington in. Using Rudy Fernandez at point guard. And going ultra small contributed to the Nuggets loss.

5. JEFF MORTON
For saying that the Nuggets would skimp on payroll and go cheap like the Avalanche. Clearly I was wrong and deserve to be on this Stiff List. I can only hope that the gods of basketball forgive me.
