Kenyon Has Patella Tear, Surgery Possible
Posted: 3/5/2010 8:07:00 PM
Source: Marc J. Spears of Yahoo! Sports

Denver Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin(notes) has a partial tear of his left patella tendon, and surgery is among the treatment options being considered, NBA sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Martin was scratched from Friday night’s game against the Indiana Pacers and the Nuggets will use the next 48 hours to decide on a treatment plan. Rest, therapeutic injections and surgery are among the options that could be used to treat an injury commonly referred to as “jumper’s knee.”

The Nuggets publicly announced only that Martin is suffering from chronic left knee patella tendinitis. On Friday evening, the team listed his playing status as day-to-day.

I posted this in the GT, might as well put it here.

On KMart’s injury (partial patella tear)

http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/12/8/1190861/patella-injuries-in-nba-history

Scroll down to the "Torn or partially torn patellar tendon: A much more severe injury." section. It’s gruesome. Every single guy on that list who suffered a partially torn patella tendon…missed the remainders of their seasons. And all of them struggled to return to form following the injury.

Go get surgery, KMart. We need you this year, but not at the expense of next year.

I’d guess KMart is done for the rest of the season. And if that’s the case…well, so are the Nuggets.

If reports are true

Then this is very serious. In a recent FanShot, I linked to one of Norsktroll’s FanPosts on BE, and he did a very comprehensive list of Patella-related injuries, and the section about patella tendon tears and partial patella tendon tears is pretty bad. No NBA player has maintained their prior level of play after their injury, although some NFL players have bounced back fine from them. Here’s hoping that it is patellar tendinitis (which is much less severe) or a strained patella tendon, which Kenyon Martin suffered in 2005. Not sure if it is the same reason why KMart got microfracture surgery on both knees.

This from Yahoo! this morning.

“If an Internet report is accurate that Denver Nuggets power forward Kenyon Martin has a partial tear of his left patella tendon, he said he hasn’t been given that information.
Martin sat out Friday’s 122-114 win over Indiana with what the Nuggets reported as chronic left knee patella tendinitis. However, there was an Internet report saying Martin has a partial tear of his left patella tendon and surgery is among the treatment options being considered.
“It’s a little more than tendinitis, but I don’t know if it’s torn,” Martin said. “I had an MRI (on Thursday). They looked at it. There’s a lot of speculation going on… It’s more serious than tendinitis but I don’t know yet.”
Martin said he should know more soon. He said MRI results are still being evaluated, and he said nobody has told him anything yet.
“The doctors, they’re just now getting to the results so how does anybody else know?” Martin said. “It’s just a report… I’m waiting on Dr. (Richard) Steadman (an outside doctor who has treated Martin) to look at it again and give me a synopsis, and then we’ll go to the team doctor and everything else from there.”
The Nuggets are calling Martin day-to-day.
Nuggets coach George Karl said he didn’t have “enough information” and didn’t want to speculate about the health of Martin, who has been the team’s defensive backbone all season. But Karl said he’s “hoping everything is going to be OK.”
Martin said nobody has said anything to him about possible surgery, but the Internet report also called rest and therapeutic injections as being possible options. Martin, who said he doesn’t know if he will play Sunday against Portland, said he’s “hopeful” it won’t be an injury that sidelines him long-term but did point to there being concern because of his past knee problems.
“I’m always on edge,” said Martin, who has had microfracture surgeries in both knees."

Which doesn’t mean that he DOESN’T have a tear, but we can always hope that the original info was wrong and a few games rest is all he really needs.

In my fantasy land

this is all just a brilliant ploy put together by Kenyon and George one night after having a nice dinner,

George and Kenyon sit at a medium size wooden table, the dishes are cleared after dinner is finnished

George Karl:
“That was a really good dinner honey, you were right about that stuff giving me my appetite back”

Kenyon Martin:
“Yeah Coach you’re straight gangster now!”

George Karl:
“Haha thanks Kenyon, I feel pretty good right now…. what worries me though is our teams lack of depth and desperate need of another Big Man,”

Kenyon Martin:
“Well you know that the Front Office spent too much money on my contract and are now hamstrung financially, heck they probably would only invest in getting another player is if I were injured and out for the season…..”

George and Kenyon looks at each other and grin

George Karl:
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?”

Kenyon Martin:
“I think I am. In the next game against Golden State, I’m gonna get a resurgence of knee tendinitis, there are several options for treatment one of which is surgery.”

George Karl:
“And we’ll have to explore all the options of what we’re gonna do….”

Kenyon Martin:
“Well I played golf with this doctor in Vale last summer, I could say I was gonna see him for a consultation before we make an decisions!”

George Karl:
“Ohhh yeah that sounds good,”

Kenyon Martin:
“Then you go to Stan and say, “Yeah Kenyon’s not sure he can make it the rest of the season and ya know I’d really feel more comfortable if…”

George Karl:
“If we had another Big Man to fill in just in case!”

Kenyon Martin:
“If he doesn’t go for this then he’s basically willing to throw the season away. I don’t think he’d do that and risk pissing Melo off considering that Melo can still leave Denver after his current contract is over…”

George raises his glass of Juice and takes a sip

George Karl:
“I don’t think there are many good bigs available right now though, we’ve really missed our chance to get anyone halfway decent by standing pat at the trade deadline,”

Kenyon Martin:
“Yeah no shit, that Thomas kid is a punk but he’s 10 times better than Mikki Moore, you should have done that deal for David Lee like I told you, but you just had to keep Linas didn’t you.”

George Karl:
“Don’t start Kenyon!”

Kenyon Martin:
“Aight well…… how long am I gonna sit out before we get another Big Man?”

George Karl:
“I think you’ll be back before the playoffs, but I can’t say for sure….”

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
