Lawson "a long way from returning to action", possibly out for season?

Uh oh.  This is VERY bad news.

Usually, Nuggets guard Ty Lawson bounces around the practice court and back halls of the Pepsi Center with a smile as wide as his future is bright.

Lately, however, there has been some fade in the smile.

Lawson walked the halls today with a heavily-iced left shoulder, and with no real idea on when he’ll be back to the court. I asked him how it was doing.

“Terrible,” he said. “I don’t know what’s wrong with it. It won’t get better, for some reason.”

On Wednesday an ultrasound test was done on the shoulder, which was injured on Sunday against the L.A. Lakers on a hard foul by center Andrew Bynum. Nothing structurally wrong was found.

“It’s a good sign and bad sign,” Lawson said. “We still don’t know what’s wrong with it. I want to know what’s wrong with it so I can go ahead and get it fixed.”

Lawson can barely lift the arm to his waist. He’s definitely not playing on Friday against Indiana and will likely be out for an extended period, bad news for the Nuggets, who had gotten used to him being on the court. They miss the game-altering speed he’s brought to the table.

According to the Nuggets’ injury report, Lawson’s injury is a left shoulder contusion.

In his absence, veteran Anthony Carter played well against Oklahoma City, recording four points and 12 assists in 21 minutes of work. Carter will remain in the reserve point guard role.

Denver is in deep doodoo in the worst way if we lose Lawson for the rest of the season or playoffs.  I can't believe we haven't heard more about this.  Lawson has been very very important in spelling Chauncey throughout the season and while Carter has performed admirably, he gets abused by any PG with any semblance of a shot.

Please get better soon Ty, we need you. :(

I’m hoping … HOPING this isn’t a torn labrum. This sounds similar to Rockies pitcher Jeff Francis’ injury. Francis missed all of last season after surgery.

Sometimes the only way to determine this injury is to do exploratory surgery.

if that was the case it would be obvious on an MRI

usually that would only affect the shoulder stability. he would be able to lift his arm at this point i would think. gotta be something else.

this is terrible news

by skithebert on Mar 5, 2010 2:57 PM MST up reply actions

Not true

Torn labrums are commonly missed on MRI’s. The best test aside from a diagnostic arthroscopy is an MR arthrogram(an MRI combined with dye injected into the shoulder for better contrast/definition).

This is the injury that Jameer Nelson had last season and missed a good portion of the season. If it is a torn labrum, he’s done for the season.

maybe JR can get some time at the point

with Melo, Chauncey or Afflalo at the 2 and Graham at the 3. Here’s to hoping. get well soon Ty.

Terrible news

This is the worst news, second only to Karls Cancer (although a distant second).

No Lawson likely equals a drop in the standings and a first round exit in the playoffs.

by CancerSucks on Mar 5, 2010 2:23 PM MST reply actions

That's a bit early isn't it?

We made it to the WCF w/o Ty last year didn’t we? I want him to play too, but I’m not gonna go all doom and gloom over this. Ty is young, it’s probably just a very deep bruse (contusion).

I got undercut in a pick up game once, and landed right on my left hip. The next morning I couldn’t put any weight on it, and I couldn’t play for like 3 months. I’m no pro athlete with extensive training, and some of the best strength and training coaches like Ty. He’ll bounce back before the playoffs.

Oh yeah I almost forgot

Damn you to hell Bynum! Why did you have to go and foul someone half your size?

by Joelsopinion on Mar 5, 2010 2:34 PM MST up reply actions

Last year

Yes, we made it farther last year with A.C., but last year we also had Kleiza in the rotation. Last year it was the starting five, plus Kleiza, Smith, Bird, and A.C.

This year it’s the starting five plus Smith, Bird, and Lawson. Without Kleiza, Karl has turned to running a three guard lineup when Anthony is on the bench. That combined with A.C. getting worse, not better, and this years team without Lawson is not as good as last year with A.C. and Kleiza. If Lawson is out an extended time, I fear a drop to 4 or 5 in the standings.

by CancerSucks on Mar 5, 2010 3:03 PM MST up reply actions

I see what you're saying

this is when Karl not expanding the rotation ALL SEASON LONG can come back and bite us in the ass. If Tacos, Frenchy, and Graham cracker were use to the offensive scheme this wouldn’t be an issue. One goes down, insert replacement. We don’t have that this year, but I refuse to pound on the panic button just yet.

by Joelsopinion on Mar 5, 2010 3:24 PM MST up reply actions

Didn't we go to the WCF last year with Carter?

It SUCKS that Lawson will be out…but I don’t think this means DOOOM DOOOOOOOOOM

I’m not a fan of Carters….but I have faith in the Nuggets. Remember JR ran the point alot last year? Maybe he will run the point more?

ok... im not a fan of Karl's 8 man rotation either

i think it should be a 9 man rotation with Graham…but to say that the 8 man rotation got Ty hurt is just dumb…Ty doesn’t play THAT much anyway he averages a little over 20 minutes if i’m not mistaken. It was just bad luck that Bynum landed on Lawson that way. Like I said, the short rotation is an issue, but let’s not just jump at the opportunity to rag on the 8 man team when it is not to blame for this particular issue

wow im really scared.. heres hoping he gets healed soon cuz we need him

but i think anything serious would have been noticed earlier and be reported on the front page of like ESPN or something idk tho
hope hes back soon

anthony clutch carter the rod smith of the nuggets

the front office deserves major credit for getting lawson and bringing back ac. i hope there will always be a place for ac in the organization when his playing days are over.

This is not good… I was counting on Ty to be a big part in us dethroning the Lakers.

He is the only Nugget whom the Lakers can’t dictate pace-wise… he’s the only Nugget they can’t slow down. When the Lakers slow us down, we’re in big trouble, especially when Melo settles being roughed up by Artest instead of fighting back, especially when KMart keeps bricking shots, especially when Nene becomes inept at STAPLES Center as always, especially when Billups is not hot, especially when J.R. shoots 25-35%.

By changing the pace, he’d remedy a lot of our offensive struggles… suddenly guys start running again and getting easy baskets. Without him, it’d be ugly unless we shoot the lights out like Billups did in game#2 this season, for the whole series. Unlikely.

I still think the biggest upgrade this team has over our 2008-09 squad and the biggest reason why we can beat the Lakers in the playoffs is Arron Afflalo. His offense is a lot better than Dahntay, and his defense is actually also a lot better than the Mr. Defense. Second biggest reason why we can top the Lakers is Ty. Without him, we’re in danger of not fulfilling this goal.

I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT!

I hope he’’ll be fine.

I might do a FanPost this weekend on the effects of Labrum injuries on past players of all leagues. Jameer Nelson got one last season, and he’s been WAY worse since.

I just threw up

Ty was our ace in the hole against LA, who always get torched by fast guards. I just pictured AC guarding Kobe in game 6 and threw up again.

by Rainbow skyline on Mar 5, 2010 6:25 PM MST reply actions

Sigh

This is depressing to say the least. Hope he’ll be back soon.

I can definitely agree with the posters above who said JR should play more point. Maybe start him there even?

Otherwise…this could be the one doomsday injury that we’ve been worried about. A lot of the depth is gone and the Nuggets don’t match up nearly as well with LAL.

by Uh on Mar 5, 2010 6:44 PM MST reply actions

Ty said he'll be back next Wens. for SURE

Said he’s feeling MUCH better…. so hopefully we don’t have to worry about him … youth can recover in no time remember!

Sadly, KMart on the other hand...

Is anything but young, and even a minor knee injury could keep him out for a long time

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
