Bucked by Milwaukee... (Nuggets/Bucks recap)

One picture is worth a thousand words to describe the Nuggets' effort tonight:

Star-divide

Brown_slug_medium

After a double overtime victory in Sacramento and traveling to the Pepsi Center, there are no excuses for our Denver Nuggets' loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.  Coming off a day of rest and the Bucks on a back to back, selfish one-on-one basketball and some truly horrific shooting doomed the Nuggets.  Count this one squarely in the "bad loss" column.

*****************************************************************************************

Pregame - Good to see the top 10 plays of the week and all those dunks from JR and Nene.  Even better to see Ty Lawson in shootaround and hopefully in the game!  The Bucks allow only 96.3 points per game (good for 7th least PPG in the league), have gone 13-3 since the All-Star break, and average margin of victory has been +10.7.  Yikes.  Denver is 3rd in PPG at 107.7, behind only Golden State (2nd) and Phoenix (1st).

1st Quarter Notes:

11:36 - A solid defensive rotation for 20 seconds and we get a wide open Jennings three.  It doesn't matter though, as Chauncey comes right back with his own on the next possession down.

10:35 - Nice assist by Melo to Petro.  Could we be seeing the softening of Petro's hands, finally?

8:30 - A slow-footed Nene rolling to the basket leads to a blocked Billups layup, turnover and layup on the other end.  Meanwhile, Melo is getting baseline all day.  No answer for him from the Bucks.

5:51 - Petro's active defense leads to a turnover and 2nd foul on Bogut.  Can't say enough about Petro's effort lately.  Chauncey's first 3 after missing ten in a row!

4:40 - Three fouls on Petro.  Looks like we'll be seeing extended Bird minutes tonight.

1:28 - Melo may have broken something in his wrist on a play where it appeared his hand got caught in a jersey.  On the bench with Jim Gillen Melo is clutching his hand in what looks like extreme pain.  UPDATE: Sprained middle finger on left hand, expected to return.

Good first quarter from the Nuggets.  The Bucks can't possibly continue to shoot 70%, can they? Chauncey with 11 points and being very aggressive.

2nd Quarter Notes:

12:00 - Still no Ty Lawson!  He's available, when will we see him?

11:15 - Luke Ridnour looks like a leprechaun in the Bucks' colors.  JR with a pretty but meaningless windmill dunk after Ridnour picks up his second foul.

9:45 - Bird's 500th block on a Jerry Stackhouse wearing cement shoes, apparently.  Melo returns to a very relieved crowd.

6:45 - BEAUTIFUL feed by a baseline-thundering Melo to Nene for a dunk right down the middle.  Bogut picks up his third shortly thereafter.

3:30 - Pretty play by Melo.  Dribbles behind his back and around his waist for an easy layup after a long outlet pass from Nene.

1st half impressions:  The Bucks shot a very respectable 47.7%.  For a team that got in last night at 4:00am, they sure aren't playing like it.  While the Nuggets were able to muster only 8 assists and missed five freethrows, they take a 1-point lead into the locker room at the half.  On the flipside, the Bucks have to be concerned about their foul situation: Jennings, Bogut and Ivey all have 3.  The Nuggets HAVE to take advantage of the Bucks fatigue to open the the 2nd half.

3rd Quarter notes:

11:08 - As Afflalo thieves the ball from the left elbow and gets fouled on the fast break, I idly wonder if his layup attempt would've been blocked anyway.  AAA has gotta learn to finish on the run.

9:28 - More offensive rebounds on that single possession than I've seen all year from the Nuggets.  Unfortunately Afflalo's shooting slump continues after shaking his defender.  0-2 in 17 minutes, though he does have 2 steals.

8:30 - How many more offensive rebounds will it take for the Nuggets to realize that after a block or a box out, someone actually has to collect the ball?

6:45 - The Nuggets look sluggish.  For a team on a back to back the Bucks are frustrating the Nuggets' offense expertly.  Melo is jawing and nobody is staying in front of the ball.

5:35 - A 16-3 run to start the third and AD calls for time.  Ty Lawson time, anyone?  The Nuggets need a spark and we know he can give it.

3:08 - Bird and AC come up with a steal leading to another Bucks foul and freethrows.

Timeout - We've discovered the reason for the Nuggets' sluggishness: March Madness interrupting Chauncey's naps.  Damn you, Robert Murray!

3:00 - Melo makes a circus shot, and JR with a fastbreak dunk.  Carter's still a great catalyst for Nuggets offense.

1:30 - Denver's jumpers finally start falling against the Bucks 2-3 zone.  Teams seem to have figured out that if they can keep the Nuggets stalled out for 4-5 minutes in a zone they can build a big lead and force the Nuggets into bad turnovers and fouls.

0:31 - Finally, some offense from Bird and Melo.  Great boxout by JR nets the last shot.

0:03 - Bird's tipdunk misses, but a great effort to close tied 76-76.  Hopefully the Bucks fatigue begins to play a role in the rest of the game, because the Nuggets are struggling.  JR's game seems to be on, so look for the Nuggets to go to him early in the 4th.  Melo can keep cutting to open up the zone.

4th Quarter Notes

11:45 - Bird's 501st block to open the fourth.  good runs start with defense.  The entire bench is in right now with Carter, Bird, Graham, Tacos and JR.  I hope AD knows what he's doing.

10:45 - JR's offensive rebound off a dead duck from Carter for 2, but it doesn't matter as Salmons strolls into another 3.  The Bucks are shooting a very respectable 45% (9-20) from downtown.

9:10 - If you're wondering how the Nuggets have only managed to score 80 points by this point in the game, look no further than the anemic 12 assists they've put up as a team. The Nuggets are now down 3, potentially four, after Carlos Delfino's and-1 on Nene.  Whatever confidence they had against the zone has evaporated.

7:51 - The Nuggets have responded with a zone of their own, forcing Ridnour into a turnover.  Down 4, the Nuggets need some offense.

Nene responds and stuffs the ball into the side of the rim.

6:48 - Down 6 and Chauncey fake-and-rakes Delfino into his 5th foul on a long 2.  Chauncey freakin' Billups.  The guy responds when you need him.

5:55 - The assistant coaching staff needs to ban eating cotton candy before games, because the Nuggets fingers are just sticky.  They've missed at least 5 fingerrolls right at the rim.  The latest, Chauncey's on a fast break, lead straight into a Nuggets turnover and foul.  Still sitting on just 12 assists.

Timeout - No Ty Lawson tonight.  In a close game, that is a good decision by AD.  Were this a blowout he might've seen some garbage time, but he needs to practice more before he sees significant minutes again.

4:27 - Denver can't score but Milwaukee can't either.  Down 5.  At 9-23, Melo is having a tough shooting night. A foul nets the Nuggets 30th and 31st FT and  cuts the lead to 3.

3:40 - Nene plods through the lane and gets an offensive three seconds.  If you want a good mental image of the Nugget offense tonight, picture a blind snail on Quaaludes.

As I type that, Carmelo fails to see a wide-open Birdman rolling to the basket, followed by two missed jumpers off the offensive glass.

Timeout Milwaukee.

1:59 - Carmelo strips Salmons for a dunk, then fouls Mbah A Moute on the other end.  Down 3.

1:58 - Salmons commits probably one of the dumbest fouls of his career by running into Chauncey before halfcourt.  Chauncey hits 2 and cuts the lead to just 1.

1:28 - Chauncey and Melo have 29 apiece.  38.8% shooting for the game.  Horrific.

1:14 - A complete defensive breakdown results in a wide open Ilyasova layup.  4 point lead for the Bucks after a turnover on Melo.

37.3 - Thomas flops himself into 2 FTs.  Nuggets down 5.

21.2 - Melo misses another layup.  At 10-27, Carmelo just took (and missed) too many difficult shots.  Delfino misses two FTs to give the Nuggets some last second life.

Missed jumper from JR Smith.  Game.  102-97, bucks.

Postgame thoughts:  A bad loss right before one of the longest road trips of the year.  For as indomitable as the Nuggets have been at home this year, they looked very mortal tonight.  Maybe that's because I just beat God of War 3 earlier, but nothing in the Nuggets play showed me anything about their commitment to the immortality of a championship.

If the Nuggets want the 2 seed, they are now going to have to win at least 3 of 5 on the road trip to stay ahead of Dallas and Utah.  As reader nohoops4u mentioned in a fanpost earlier this week, the last thing we wanted the Nuggets to do was to overlook the Bucks for the 5 game roadie.

It appears that is exactly what happened tonight.  A complete lack of focus throughout the game, particularly down the stretch.  A number of costly turnovers (11 for the game) and missed fingerrolls right at the basket killed the Nuggets.  The Nuggets outrebounded the Bucks 53-40, but when you shoot just 37.2% as a team from the field, there's a lot of garbage to collect.

Still no Ty Lawson, even though Altitude teased us with reports that he "would play tonight".  Hopefully versus the Knicks on the 23rd.

The Dallas Mavericks lost to the Boston Celtics 102-93, so the Nuggets retain a half game lead for the 2 seed.  Utah's win pulls them within 2 of the Nuggets.  Time to get ready for D'Antoni's Knicks, then to Boston.  I expect a much better effort from the entire team after a 2 day break.

Non-Slugs:

- Birdman had 6 points, 12 rebounds, 4 blocks and a number of "bothers".  He was very active on the court tonight and was one of the few bright spots.

- Johan Petro collected 6 boards, went 2-2 for the field and scored 4 points in just 13 minutes.  AD did not play him enough tonight.

- Chauncey was perfect from the line at 17-17.  29 points, but only 3 assists.

- Joey Graham was 5-5 from the field and collected 6 boards in 12 minutes.  He should've replaced Carmelo after his finger sprain.

- The Milwaukee Bucks.  They played their game, a solid, lockdown defense, to perfection.  They shut the Nuggets down with a 2-3 zone and forced them into some very difficult attempts.  The Nuggets shot just 37.2% (32-86) from the field (21.4% from 3, 3-14)

Slugs:

- Carmelo Anthony scored 29 points, but it took 29 shots (10-29).  He also turned the ball over 4 times and spent most of the evening yelling at the officials.

- After period of improved play, JR Smith was just 5-16 and turned the ball over twice (1-5 from 3).  JR may be coming out of his season-long slump, but he must display more consistency down the stretch.

- Arron Afflalo's horrific shooting slump continues.  He went just 0-2 for 1 point, notching 2 steals and 2 boards.

The zone defense surly kills the Nuggets.

The Bucks actually play D

The Nuggets play “Have two or three guys follow the ball around as it is being passed so that all their 3-point shooters like Carlos Delfino and Luke Ridnour are wide-open”

Nuggets offense: Hey, let’s all go 1-on-3 or 1-on-4 and not pass the ball!

what is this

I want a recap not a play by play.

This is getting out of hand.

I hope you are being sarcastic

The postgame thoughts section recapped the game well in my opinion (as did the picture on top). Seriously though. It’s not “getting out of hand.”

Personally, I liked the game notes. They could have been abbreviated a bit, but they served their purpose and certainly did not detract from the recap.

About the game itself. auugh

Nice game notes

Credit Milwaukee. Right now the Nuggets are a very fundamentally flawed team. They had 3 wins gift-wrapped for them before the biggest road trip of the season, and sleepwalked through all of them. They have gotten worse, normally they are good enough to overcome lots of mistakes and poor decisions. Milwaukee showed the polar opposite – giving a team effort with the best players heeding to their teammates and lifting them up to a win against all odds. Denver did not deserve to win, yet they had a chance till the very end. Melo showed selfishness of the highest order, there’s no need to sugar coat or deny it.

Earlier in the year, JR Smith had a 40+ point game against followed by a horrific extended slump leading to Andrew and the Denver Post demanding that he be traded. I think JR is having another hangover from his amazing performance in Memphis. He’s scored a lot of garbage time and meaningless buckets, but when we’ve needed big plays in crunch time JR has been absolutely horrific. I agree with Beefy, we need Lawson back ASAP to add another dimension off the bench. In reality all teams go through stretches of bad shooting but champions work through that by playing the right way as a team and giving a consistent effort on defense. Nuggets don’t do that. They go cold they could lose to anybody

by runningdonut on Mar 20, 2010 11:28 PM MDT reply actions

Oh yeah

We would lose to the Bucks in a playoff series. They force the kind of pace and aggressive defense that frustrates the Nuggets and gets them into trying to force a whistle every time down rather than make the shot. Milwaukee is a decent team so this loss and and the one earlier in the season don;t look terrible now, but it is discouraging to see the way they toyed with the Nuggets psyche this game

phoenix and that last laker game showed the rest of the league how to beat denver

we probley need to win these rest of the games we have left to keep 2nd seed but to be honest and i know i’ll catch shit for this but i just don’t think this is our year. i don’t want to hear the excusses there is none we just don’t have it really. to get get beat by a team on a back to back at home and who played in a double over time last night and got here 5AM this morning and flat out kicked our ASS. better start praying cause we are going to need it.

Yeah I agree about all of that

But, knowing the egos of these playeres – think Melo, Chauncey, J.R., even K Mart – all these guys are pissed they lost to a low seed in the Junior Varsity Eastern Conference playing a horrific 2nd of a back-to-back game at 5,280+?

Yeah, they are pissed.

Mostly at themselves, but Milwaukee played like a basketball team tonight. To be honest, that only happens in the NBA once every 5-10 games. 20-30 if you are Warriors or Knicks fans.

So they either man up and play like a unit, or they get bitchslapped out of the playoffs a la the 5 seasons previous last year.

They need somebody to light a fire under their colelctive asses, as they don’t have a sense of urgency.

we played a horrible team and barely got beat -

that happens to the Lakers all the time.

No, this obviously isn’t good, but if it was going to happen, at least this is going to be a kick in the ass going in towards the closing 12 games and the playoffs.

Problem is that Milwaukee isn't horrible at all

They are 38-30 and not that far behind the 4th seed in their conference. By my math, they are an over-.500 team, and the Nuggets are supposed to be able to beat them…

bucked themselves

3 main reasons denver lost – meelo, chauncemee and smeeth. denver had 86 field goal attempts. that was 10 more than the bucks and they made 3 more shots. cb1 played 37+ minutes and had 3 assists. ac played 10+ minutes and led the team with 4 assists. joey graham played 13+ minutes and had 1 less assist than the starting point guard. billups scoring adds a great dimension to the offense. he needs to set a better example for the rest of the team. 13 total team assists for the entire game. denver did show some restraint by trying only 14 three point shot attempts.

You are 100% right

JR hit a big shot or two in the first half, but otherwise played terribly on both offense and defense. Chauncey scored 29 points on around 30% FG shooting. Same goes for Melo, who missed so many GODDAMN LAYUPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Next game, we start AC, Lawson, Afflalo, Graham, and Petro. Birdman will be our sixth man, and Tacos can backup AC at point.

i agree

i know cb1 wants to be aggressive, but i think he should just focus on running the floor and seting guys up instead of trying to score so much. its no way ac should have more assist then billups. jr always gets called out for jacking up 3s but honestly cb1 does the same thing a lot of times. melo should have drove to the whole more. maybe he should just start dunking the ball on people instead of lay ups all the time. i cant wait till kmart comes back

Chauncey should be like Jason Kidd

Don’t worry about scoring. Just pass the ball and let everybody else do the scoring. Come playoff time, Chauncey is going to have a hard time guarding Kidd because Kidd doesn’t overexert himself.

do what you have to do

denver started the season with smith suspended. ac was starting, the 2 other guards never played with the team before and 1 of the 2 new guards never played in the nba before. cb1 had no choice but to shoot and score. denver plays a 2 point guard or 3 guard offense it goes without saying it is intended for him to shoot. executing the half court offense is the teams biggest weakness. nuggets only do it part time. when denver decides to run the half court offense they do it half ass. there is an old saying. man is a creature of habit. it is getting very late in the season to establish good habits. every team in the nba is well aware of the nuggets bad habits.

by nohoops4u on Mar 21, 2010 4:59 PM MDT up reply actions

different now

it’s nothing wrong with cb1 scoring when hes open. its when he just only focuses on scoring instead of passing. a lot of times the nuggets have possessions that seem to go no where because they dont get the ball to their best player or atleast move the ball around to the open man. i think thats why the half court offense is not as successful as it should be. another thing, they seem to leave the wrong line up in for too long even when leads start to slip away or teams begin to pull away. they wait until its too late.

Oops let me try again

Just watched the Blazers and Suns and 1 possession the Blazers passed the ball 7 times. They ended up with two very open shots. One was a wide open corner three that Batum passed up on for an Aldrige lay up with the and 1. Too many times we see the Nuggets’ possessions end with one pass leading to iso or very contested jumper. My point being PASS THE BALL!!!!

Chauncey sometimes goes into shoot-first fits

JR is either JR The Point Guard or JR the Damn Ballhog on any given night. Melo’s 3+ assists per game come from being forced to pass on his isos i.e. when he’s trapped by the baseline.

Well…what can I say. This loss could turn out to be very costly. The Mavs have a much easier schedule left than us and a win against the Bucks, who are enjoying a nice run but mind you still play in the (L)eastern Conference and definately would have been beatable might have been crucial in order for us to secure the second seed.
I think we’ll win in New York but Boston looks like they are starting to get back on track so I somehow have the feeling we won’t walk away with a W from TD Banknorth Garden.
If the PO’s started today we would play the Spurs in the 1st round but if we were in the 3-seed we would play the Suns and I would much much rather face an old Spurs team than a run-and-gun fast-paced Phoenix team.

I can never figure out why anyone would think that there would be an ‘a’ in definitely. If you realize that the root word is finite then you can’t possibly imagine an ‘a’ in definitely. Your misspelling of definitely suggests to me that you also mispronounce definitely.

On topic though, I think the Nuggets would have a relatively easy time dispatching the Spurs in a playoff series if the Nuggets have home court so I agree with you there.

Then how should one pronounce "definitely"

Should it be pronounced “dee-FI-night-lee”?

The “I” is pronounced like “eye”

Many people that I know pronounce definitely like “DEH-fin-eht-lee”

The “eht” is pronounced like the “et” in “met”

I don't know why people are over-reacting

Over this. The Bucks have played well. Seriously, Double overtime win in Sac then coming to Denver and winning. As disappointed as I am, I’m not all too pissed. They obviously wanted the win more then the Nuggets.

I would sure like to know who’s the man who “teaches” the Nuggets how to play defense. From what you guys said last night, it didn’t even exist.

Here's mine:

1st quarter
10:00 Well, Nuggets usually are a bit sluggish
7:15 Not too bad
3:00 Hey, we aren’t down by double digit points!
0:00 Up 31-27, offense clicking.

2nd quarter
10:00 Meh
6:30 OK GUYS IT’S TIME TO START PLAYING BASKETBALL!
Last minute: Refs suck

3rd quarter
All 12 minutes: The Bucks are 38-30! They don’t suck! Like Hastings said, the Nuggets are/were 30-5 at home, but seemed to be wanting to be 30-6

4th quarter
9:50 OMFG GUYS WHAT THE CRAP IS UP?
7:00 Damnit JR, stop shooting
5:00 Damnit Melo, stop shooting
4:30 I dunno, but I think the Nuggets should try to win this game.
3:30 (grunt)
2:30 (grunt)
1:40 Down by 2, we can do this!
Last minute of the game: FAIL…

TRADE MELO
CHAUNCEY MUST RETIRE
SMITH IS A BUM

Is anyone going to observe that Melo played MUCH worse after his injury. I know that’s hard for people like nohoops to accept. On a night where Smith, Chauncey and Melo all shot poorly where exactly was “moving the ball” going to produce any offense. The Bucks played one heck of a game, and Skiles teams tend to beat up on the Nuggets.

Be calm people. We get rest before the road trip. Lawson is coming back. Before we have people burning their Nuggets shirts lets see how they do on the road trip.

Thank You

I was about to make the Melo point. He was 4/4 when he was hit on CONSECUTIVE possessions in the first on his right finger. When he came back in, he barely used his left hand for catching or dribbling, and when he did, he turned the ball over. Before the injury, three out ouf his first four shots were bullying Delfino in for layups with both hands. When he got injured, it seemed like the whole team got crappy. Chauncey started missing and so did JR. The mob mentality on this website sometimes goes overboard. But I will join it if the Nuggets collectively pull a Mavs and get shat on in New York. That would be sad. And Beefy, good in-depth analysis. Keep it up!

I think Melo kept his head in the game as much as he could even after he was hurt.

I see Melo as trying to carry the entire team on his shoulders when then get behind and he sees his players around him go cold. Everyone was missing easy shots and layups and taking quick jumpers including Chauncey.

The Nuggets are a rotational team

meaning that their players are substituted in and out at specific times in the game. It’s supposed to give the players designated rests throughout the game and relies on “muscle memory” to complete the game. I don’t necessarily agree with it. I think if a player is struggling and you put him in for a guy that has the hot hand, you’re doing your team a disfavor. But a lot of NBA teams make their substitutions at certain times so there must be something to it. Maybe there’s something in the CBA about it…lol

also not to take away from a off shooting night, they have to spell melo some. He has been averaging a crazy amount of minutes (even more than usual) but without I.V.s its gonna start to break him down, its not 40 plus minutes of melo running up and down, its 40 plus minutes of him banging and jumping, and being hacked, hit, and hammered everytime he goes towards the basket. I totally agree that while getting the highest seed possible is important, if by getting it you roll in to the playoffs broken and beat, it will be a early exit.

Tough to talk basketball amidst such a serious health concern for Karl, but the Nuggets lost last night at home to Milwaukee and are about to embark on a five-game road trip without Karl.

Dallas and Utah are well within reach of passing Denver for the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the West if the Nuggets don’t pull out more than one win on the road.

Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post wonders if the best move might not be making Chauncey Billups the one in charge: “If I were Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke, I would have Billups serve as player-coach until Karl’s health improves. This was the one egg we can barely afford to lay

The ENTIRE team blew this game

You can’t pin it on Melo entirely. You can’t pin it on Chauncey. If anything, let’s pin it on the NCAA Tourney since Melo and Chauncey and Ty admitted to not getting the rest required from watching all the games

If anything Melo played harder than anyone else, with a sprained finger. Nene played fairly well. But it seemed there was no energy whatsoever and they didn’t have their collective head in the game. Also, some of this might need to be on Adrian Dantley for not seeing the team was not prepared mentally for this game.

Thanks for the kind words everyone

That was my first-ever post-game recap that I’ve done so I apologize if it was a little disjointed. As the game was progressing I took down the game notes and time simply because I thought that frequently, as fans, we overlook the little plays and changes in games to focus on the boxscores and stats. Therefore, I did my recap in the form of notes on specific events and when.

I certainly understand that part of a good recap involves condensing the elements of one’s notes and then refining them into solid opinions based off of observed behavior. I will definitely do a better job of that in the future, should I get another shot at a recap).

Otherwise, it was a lot of fun and makes me feel really proud. I’m as bummed about the L as the rest of the Stiffs, but I think Denver can win both the NY/BOS back to back later this week and should come right back after tonight’s debacle. Go Nuggets!

As an example of the little things...Melo was 4-4 before his injury, then 10-29 the rest of the game.

That’s just 6 for 25. Just barely over 25% shooting. I’m glad other readers caught on to that fact – SDCat, Thursty, and Lack, to name a few.

But remember, the Knicks aren’t a elite team. I’m worried the Nuggets are going to play half ass again and give them the victory. I hope that doesn’t happen, but I have that “oh shit, f*ck” feeling about that game.

by Uh on Mar 21, 2010 9:57 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah it puts things into perspective

I thought the interview with Chauncey was very telling. GK’s absence on the bench is being felt by the team leader and they are struggling to come up with answers in close games. AD and the staff deserve credit but they have no experience in the head coaching role. Chauncey is being asked to do so much. GK is fighting hard through his recovery and it sucks he’s going to miss more time than he wants to. We all want the Nugs to win but George is fighting a bigger battle right now and hopefully he can get back for the playoffs and bring some stability to the leadership of this team. Not only Kenyon but missing GK could be wearing on the minds of the team going into this incredibly important trip.

Near the end of the game, AD looked a bit unsure of what to do

He doesn’t work the refs, and he seems very mild-mannered. However, I think he called timeouts at the wrong times, and out of timeouts some of the plays were isos.

Yeah

That 6 game winning streak around the time of K-Mart’s injury and GK’s absence from the road trip was pretty miraculous. I wondered at the time if the effects of the injury and the cancer treatments just hadn’t sunk in yet.

I would’ve expected to get really upset at the Nuggets for losing that game on Saturday, but instead I just felt kind of bummed out, and found myself ratcheting my expectations way downward. My hopes of the Nuggets doing anything much in the playoffs this year are down to just about nothing. I can’t really be disgusted with them or anything. They’re just up against too much. How would any other team do in this situation?

Is getting pretty ugly for the Nuggets. No Karl, no Martin. 5 game road trip with three to four playoff teams, with two back-to-backs. Ugh! Apparently Stern wants to make sure the Nuggets can’t beat the Lakers.

Gotta Put This Loss on Melo

This was one of those games where Melo’s lack of effort on defense on selfish offense infected the whole team’s attitude. 10-27 is absolutely pathetic, and Melo kept taking bad shot after bad shot. Why can’t Melo focus on setting up his teammates when he has games like this? Granted, Nene’s missed layups didn’t help, and JR had one of his “off games” and Chauncey fired up some quick awful looking 3-pointers, but Melo’s play set the tone.

It’s a shame because this was a HUGE game heading into a tough road trip…

Simply put, this should’ve been a W and the Nuggets just lost their potential “55th” victory of the season. We will now end with 54 wins, thus going 7-5 on the remaining schedule. 5 are at home, and hopefully Andrew Bynum is a no-show when the Lakers come to town, so 5-0 is a realistic stretch to close the season. I think 2-5 on the road (victories at New York and Toronto) is also on par with the way the Nuggets have been playing lately; a return to the inconsistent Nuggs (pre-Chauncey) and “sticky ball syndrome”, as George likes to put it.

The versatile Bucks basically won without significant production from Bogut and Jennings. Sorry A.D., but the Nuggets got outcoached in this one. Sad to see that all 3 — Melo, JR and Chauncey had horrible shooting nights at the same time. No assists, no teamwork to pull out the W.

Seeding for the playoffs isn’t the most important thing for this team

If last year’s playoffs didn’t make it clear, the Nuggets are a much better team at home compared to on the road. This is largely because JR Smith and Birdman play MUCH better at The Can than on the road. We don’t want to face the Mavs without homecourt advantage.

During the Melo era, the Nuggets’ record in playoff series where they have homecourt advantage: 2-0

Series where they don’t have home court advantage: 0-6

Nuggets’ home record this year: 30-6
Nuggets’ road record this year: 17-17

Seeding is of the utmost importance, the Nuggets are far better at home than on the road, the numbers prove it conclusively.

I'm watching this game

Why is ANYONE afraid of the Mavs?? I don’t understand this. They. Are. Still. SOFT.

96-78 in the 4th

But be prepared for dirk to hit some big shots. He’s 8-12

So LACK how is that ridiculously easy schedule looking for the Mavs now?

they are suffering Nuggets syndrome losing to teams they should handle…or they are overrated which is likely.

I think it is more that they are overrated

They have played a lot of bad teams since the all-star break that makes their record look better than it is.

Do I have to put up another Weekly Optimism post on the Mavs?

SOFT….as long as Dirk Nowitzki is their featured offensive player they will be a soft team..

I'm still standing by my point that their schedule is pretty darn easy

It’s their fault for losing their games.

Easy for the Nugs or LA

but my point is Dallas isn’t as good as people are fearing so they will lose more games with that schedule then the other top dogs in the West.

Good point...

However, the deciding factor is the Dallas vs. Nuggets game on March 29 in Dallas with the Nuggies on the second of a b2b. If we win that, then we also win the tiebreaker and they have almost no chance. If we lose that, then the race is tight as heck.

Mavs lost!

I hope the Celtics decide to lose to us the same way they fell to Utah

Actually the Nugs are 1-1 so far against the Mavericks

And according to your own schedule predictions, the Nugs will beat the Mavs in their final matchup.

I was kinda being sarcastic

Because I even said that it was a roadie on the second game of a back to back at the end of a long road trip.

And I was saying that RIGHT NOW AT THIS MOMENT I think Dallas has the tiebreaker.

STIFF LIST (as of 2/7 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. THE NUGGETS AT HOME
How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

3. KEVIN LOVE
Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.

4. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS
The 'Cats have lost 11 straight and are now 3-21 ... in the Eastern Conference! This is what happens when you let an underwear salesman with a Hitler mustache run your team.

5. MIKE BROWN
Dr. Bunsen Honeydew (Google it!) got himself a one-game suspension for making contact with a referee.
