The heart and soul of the team debate
Last night, my dad and I were talking about who's the heart and soul of the Denver Nuggets. My dad it's Carmelo Anthony because the Nuggets wouldn't be championship material and that the Nuggets are lucky to have him. I said that it has to be Chauncey being that he went to college in Denver and he's well respected in Colorado.
What do you guys think? I like getting other people's opinions.

J.R. Swish
It’s funny because I just said this in a comment about an hour ago.
Carmelo is not the heart and soul. He is the Superstar. Of course the Nuggets wouldn’t be where they are without him: he’s the best player. But that’s different.
Chauncey is the leader. Chauncey turned the team around when he came here and brought championship level experience and maturity to a team that was full of talent but mentally lost. Chanucey is the floor general and runs the show. But that’s different.
In my opinion, J.R. Smith is the clear heart and soul of the team. So many games this year would have been lost if not for his wild shooting antics. He plays emotional basketball—not always championship level ball—but it’s comes from his heart, not his head. Sometimes it hurts the Nuggets, but more often that not, it WINS GAMES. He plays to find the zone, it’s like he’s in a own little world sometimes. He’d rather take a contested fade away jumper than a easy open shot. He’d rather be 5 feet behind the three point line than have his toes on it. He even shoots free throws from farther away!?!
Have you ever watched him before the game? He waits at the scorers’ table and greets every starter as they come in, never bitter about coming off the bench. He high fives and pounds all the commentators. He hugs the opposing players. He is 100% heart and soul, and that’s why he’s such special part of this Nuggets squad.

I disagree with this
JR is not the guy that drives the team to success. He’s awesome, and he gets emotional when he plays, but he is not the guy players rally around in a late ballgame. I’d say Kenyon is that guy for the Nuggets

Put me in the K-Mart camp
But it is a tough call.
I always tell people that Melo made Denver a playoff team, but it is Billups who made Denver a title contender. K-Mart is different, though. With his tattoos and tough play, he embodies the personality of this Nuggets squad.

Kmart is the ONLY PERSON IN NBA HISTORY to comeback from double microfracture
And he’s managed to play well too, unlike some other players that haven’t really comeback from a single microfracture (cough McGrady cough)

I think Kenyon Martin,
like thuggetsnation said… melo=superstar, billups=leader
so i feel like while Jr might be the 3rd best player (maybe), Martin is def the heart and soul (so as long as he cheers us on from the bench, we could keep it up)
kenyon THE MAN martin
the heart and soul of a basketball team does NOT WALK OFF THE COURT when he is taken out of a game. kmart is not playing right now because of what may turn out to be a CAREER ENDING INJURY. he has traveled with the team AND been present on the bench in spite of his playing status. his multiple comebacks from CATASTROPHIC LEG INJURIES is unparalleled in the history of the game. kenyon is a heart and soul hall of famer.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
Damn
I was so sure you were going to say Anthony Carter, but agreed K-mart is the heart and soul of the nuggets
Why live life on the edge, when you can jump off?
AC is the Apendix, and Gall Bladder of the team
Sure he may not serve a vital funtion, but if he’s not healthy it could kill us. Balkman is like that thing that dangles at the back of your throat. You don’t don’t kow why it’s there, but you’re happy to see it everytime you look for it.

You're way off on Balkman
No way he’s the Uvula. Mine was injured (some infection or something, like a sore throat) for about 2 weeks, and it was miserable. I didn’t want to eat or drink anything.
Balkman was hurt for a few weeks, and no one noticed.
I’d say he’s an eyebrow. A nice addition to the team, but that’s about it.
Yeah but you'd feel kinda weird walking around without an eyebrow
No offense to anyone missing eyebrows

Kmart and Billups
Melo is not a vocal leader and doesn’t wear his heart on his sleeve. Anyone that says it isn’t Kmart and Billups doesn’t really know the Nuggets.
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.
by Artimus Mangilord on Mar 18, 2010 12:01 PM MDT up reply actions
Hard to argue
Melo isn’t really a leader. Chauncey is, and so is KMart.
Also, the KMart since Christmas has never taken a game off in which he was able to play. Not a dig on Melo or Chauncey, but just sayin’

I first wanted to say K-Mart
bc he embodies what the Nuggets are about. (Running, dunking, toughness) but I tend to think out of the box a little bit sometimes. I honestly think that this team feeds off each other. I don’t think there’s really any prima donna type players on this team. This team is made up of a bunch of winners hands down. For example, Chauncey won the NBA Championship with Detroit. Melo and Ty have both won National Titles in college. K-Mart has played in the NBA Finals while with NJ and also won gold medal at the Goodwill Games in 2201. AAA has played in the Final Four and the National Championship game for UCLA. Nene even walked away from the 2001 Goodwill Games with the Bronze for his native Brazil. Hell, even Balkman contributed to South Carolina winning back to back NIT Championships while at South Carolina. Tacos, Birdman and AC were all undrafted and fought like hell just to make it into the league. If you think about all the injuries including Nene’s cancer that these players have come back from you can say that there isn’t a quitter among them. When you break it all down, this team knows what it takes to win, what it takes day in and day out to get the job done.
If you wanna debate about who the heart and soul of the team is…I say it’s their desire to be the best, their desire to win, and their desire to be unstoppable. And that doesn’t rest with any one player or coach. Every member of this team has that.

Hmm maybe those knees of K-marts are going to hold up after all

2001...damn typos
that’s what I get for posting stuff at work

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein 39 active players have won NCAA National Championships…two (Ty Lawson and Melo) are on the Nuggets.

surprise surprise
K-Mart was injured for Cincinnati’s NCAA tournament appearance his senior year. That year he was National player of the year but broke his fibula in the Conference USA? tournament. I think the Bearcats were slated to get a high seed (one of the #1 spots) in the tourney and i think they ended up with a 2 seed. Anyway they ended up losing in the 2nd round.

OK, besides Kenyon Martin, who else of note came from it
Only guy I can think of is Michael Redd, who took a good deal of time to develop, and who’s career is almost over because of injuries. BUT WAIT, I FORGOT MALIK ALLEN!
/facepalm
The first seven picks of the draft (in order) were:
KMart
Stromile Swift
Darius Miles
Marcus Fizer
Mike Miller
DerMarr Johnson
Chris Mihm
Sorry, a team of those players would only win an NBA championship

Pretty sure Cincy plays in one of the big conferences
either the big east or the big 10, too lazy to look it up right now though
Why live life on the edge, when you can jump off?
It's big east
They are in the NIT this year
I actually didn’t know until a week ago that NIT stood for “National Invitational Tournament”
I always thought it meant “Not In Tournament” in reference to the main tourney

But he is definitely the cranked up blood pumping through the Heart
