It's time for Stern to make a new rule

After tonights game, I have had enough with a constant play that certain teams and players keep doing.  I am talking about he oh so annoying flop.

Star-divide

Tonighs game against the Houston Rockets was the worse one yet this year in regards to the flop.  Luis Scola, Kevin Martin and Shane Battie each flopped at least three times a piece and got the call on half of them.  It altered the outcome of the game in favor of Houston and really just takes away from the game of basketball.

I feel bad for Houston Rocket fans because if my favorite team played like that I would have to stop watching them.  It's just not fun to watch and takes any kind of physicality there is in the NBA.  This leads to my next point.  I think David Stern needs to enforce a flop rule.  I think it should be a team foul and an automatic turn over.  Each team should get one warning, like the delay of game rule.  And after that, if a flop is called it shoul be a team foul and an automatic possesion for the other team.

The flopping is getting rediculous ridiculous and I really think a rule should be made to prevent it.  What do you guys think?

The All Flop List:

1. Manu Gifloply

2. Sasha Va-flop-on-you-cich

3. Dirk No-i-didn't-just-flop-witzki

4. Chris Palease-give-me-the-call-ul

5. Kevin Man-i-flopped-u-rtin

7. Luis S-hould-I-flop-now-cola

8. Shane B-etter-watch-out-for-my-flop-attier

9. Anderson Varaflop

10. Dwayne Waddaflop

Unbelievable flopping from Houston tonight

I hate NBA refs but tonight is exactly how they should handle flopping, they punished Houston for it by calling fouls on them and not falling for it.

Proud member of Thuggetz nation.

i do not care and the nuggets should not either

that was not the reason denver lost. according to coach dantley it was transition defense. i agree. nuggets should have learned an important lesson against dallas in the playoffs. melo was fouled, he kept playing because there was no whistle and hit a game winning shot. i have said it before and will say it again. THERE ARE VERY FEW SECRETS IN THE NBA. THE FEW SECRETS IN THE NBA DO NOT STAY SECRETS FOR VERY LONG. nuggets always bitch about fouls. when that happens the other teams take the ball the other way and score an easy lay up. melo can complain all he wants about a lack of respect. he is correct. meanwhile the other team is headed the other way for an easy basket.

I didn’t see the game tonight, so I can’t comment on this particular game specifically, but you’re dead-on about this part:

nuggets always bitch about fouls. when that happens the other teams take the ball the other way and score an easy lay up. melo can complain all he wants about a lack of respect. he is correct. meanwhile the other team is headed the other way for an easy basket.

It’s so obvious, if we blog commentors can see it, I don’t understand why the coaches aren’t sitting down with the players in the film room and showing it to them.

There actually is a rule, came into play a few years ago where if you flop, you get the foul. It works about 20% of the time as the refs can’t watch everything on the court (just impossible) so they react to the after play (guy falling down, flailing arms, tears running down face)

by RPN on Mar 16, 2010 7:47 AM MDT reply actions

Garrett Olsen - my thoughts EXACTLY!!!

I watched last nights game and told my own 17 yr. old son that players like Kevin Martin are frickin’ pussies! Yes I used those words to him. Kevin Martin is not man enough to take a little banging in the big boys league. His flops are sick. Not to mention as Garrett did many other NBA players. Scola, Battier, Dirk, hell even Lebron James does it. CP3 does it. The NBA (do you hear me David Stern?) needs to make a rule about this. How about the propietors of this site? Andrew, you have many contacts with the powers that be. Is there anyway you can put the word in Stern’s ear?

by redrockerb on Mar 16, 2010 8:47 AM MDT reply actions

haha

I think its funny you used “frickin” then used “pussies” If you’re gonna used pussies then go all in and say they are fuckin pussies! hahah…if you insist on using frickin tho…then I would go with frickin pansies.

other than that…i didnt get to watch the game :(

I was gonna

uses his name in the poll, but I just have never gotten over Sasha Vaginachich’s flop when JR ran at him when he shot the 3 in the WCF. JR was 3 feet away, he fell and got 3 shots. Worse flop of all time. I did forget CP3… He flops a lot too.. It is kind of strange that it seems like more West Conference players flop than East. Doesn’t it seem that way a liitle?

I believe a Laker fan (Marty Mart) posted the following on the Weekly Optimism post:

“The only problem is playing up to potential for 7 straight games is something the Nuggets have not done all season.” Condesending Laker fan comment no doubt. Yeah it does

That is because the Spurs and the Rockets are in the West plus we see a lot more of the West as Nugs fans. That Varajao from Cleveland should be on the biggest flopper list too. You should redo this post and take out Tony Battie and put in Varajao (I am spelling it wrong), Ginobili, Scola, and Vujachic. I will rec it as I am sure many others will if you fix it. We could have it on recommended posts till the season is over.

either that or the refs just dont give them the call.

by shaqfor3 on Mar 16, 2010 7:53 PM MDT reply actions

Too serious.

Others on here even went as far as suggesting getting rid of offensive fouls. Fact of the matter is, flops are exaggerations which everyone does. You’re not gonna get rid of it no matter what penalties you use, so you just have to trust it. They don’t always get the call for flops, just like everyone doesn’t always get calls for legitimate fouls. Its not something that can just be fixed with a rule or law.

by Marty Mart on Mar 17, 2010 10:43 AM MDT up reply actions

Thats easy for a Laker fan to say

Since Kobe gets the call even if you look at him wrong, and half your team uses to the flop method ie. Gasol, Vflapachich, Walton, Kobe etc. It’s retarded and LA is one of the teams that does it the most. You could easily make a flop rule. Flops are as easy to spot as a foul is. If you wanna worry about the refs gettin whistle happy with an already whistle happy game then make a flop a tech.. I bet 10-15 players would have to move to Europe to play ball… Sasha being one of them.

"Don't chase the money, chase the dream"

by Garrett Olsen on Mar 17, 2010 11:26 AM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

Ok

whatever you say. I find it funny that L.A. does it the most considering their about average when it comes to drawing fouls anyway. And of the 4 players you mentioned, Vujacic plays horrid defense for less than ten min a game, Pau rarely gets other players in foul trouble, and Walton hasn’t even played 20 games worth of min and has been injured most of this season. I guess Ron Artest is a flopper to you as well. Like I said, every player exaggerates things including Kobe, Melo, Wade, Bron, and company at the elite levels of the game. Flops don’t need to be a tech, we have enough things that get a tech already. Besides when a ref realizes they got done over by a flop they usually don’t get the benefit of the whistle during that game overall and they give a makeup call to the player. You’re fussing for something that is at most less than 5 fouls during the course of a game, nowhere near enough to actually effect the outcome unless its a flop at the end, which is rare but maybe Denver gets bested by them more often than I see.

look I never say he doesnt ever flop. But in comparison to Ginobli, Varejao, etc. (the big time floppers in this league) he flops a lot less frequently. Plus also take into consideration the huge cut back in his minutes this year. Other aspects of his game such as his idiotic fouls or poor shooting stand out a lot more.

There is a rule!!!

But the refs choose to ignore it. If it’s an intentional flop then the foul is on you. But the badly trained refs continue to go by “what they think happened” rather than what really happend.

Stern needs to swallow his pride and admit going to the 3rd ref system was a bad idea and go back to 2 refs in the game. The games truly were called better with 2 experienced refs.

The 3rd ref is usually poorly trained, very inexperienced and doesn’t know when you should and when you shouldn’t blow the whistle.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
