Weekly Optimism: The Mavs Edition
Per request....here's some ACDC to get us started
AC/DC - Rock And Roll Ain't Noise Pollution (via RocknRollAddicts)
I never understood why people were slurping the Mavs so much. They make a trade for Butler and Haywood and suddenly people think they were the team to beat in the west (outside of the Fakers) Then they went on a 13 game winning streak against a majority of patsies and even I was getting nervous. Then....
....the New Jersey Nets came in an showed us that Dallas is still Dallas. While the Nets didn't win the game, they came damn close....IN DALLAS. The very next game they lost to the Knicks at home...and their streak was broken.
Now...Dallas has enough patsies left on their schedule to challenge for the second (and maybe first) seed in the West with the Nuggets, but lets not proclaim them a "scary" team anymore. I've long said that as long as their offense runs primarily through Dirk they will be a "soft" team. Dirk will get his points, but they STILL are not a diverse offensive team. Haywood is a big guy....that's about it. Terry is injured...Kidd is old...Marion is old and should get some counseling from Hair Club for Men
I'm not proclaiming the Nuggets a lock to seal up the second or first seed. All I'm saying is look at the Mavs....think of Kenyon shoving Dirk to the ground....and smile to yourselves....they are still that team
Go Nuggets!

However the seedings shake out, it’s on Dallas to prove THEY can beat US in the playoffs – until they do, all the 13-game winning streaks in the world don’t mean squat.
Classic case of a team peaking too soon…
there are very few secrets in the nba
the few that exist do not last very long. once the rest of the league catches on they will make adjustment. the fact remains there is only 1 basketball and only 5 players can be on the court for each side at a time. the only effect all of cuban’s wheeling and dealing has done is stock piling talent. he has kept other teams in the western conference from getting a player that could help a rival. washington with all the talent and payroll was not going to the playoffs. look at all the money dallas has spent, the 13 game winning streak and the players they have. denver still is ahead of them in the standings.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
Great Post
Mavs will be out in the 2nd round… The plan to beat them is easy. Beat up Dirk. Once you do that they fold like Oragami
Plus Cuban is an ass.

Not so fast...
Mavs got Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood. A big reason why we beat the Mavs in 5 last year was because of Nene’s domination of Dampier, but Haywood is more mobile and can control Nene. Caron Butler provides a guy who can really rough up Melo/JR along with Marion. They pretty much replaced a bunch of scrubs, Josh Howard, and Drew Gooden with Caron Butler, Shawn Marion, Eddie Najera, and Brendan Haywood.
They’ll be out 2nd round, but it won’t be easy at all.

I'll have to agree to disagree with this
Haywood control Nene? Eh come playoff time if Nene can play to his potentiol there aren’t many players who can stop him (Dwight Howard is the only one that comes to mind) with his athleticism, speed and power. Butler can try to contain Afflalos spotup threes all he wants, but if JR gets hot and goes off, no one can stop him. That’s why Denver CAN be so dangerous, is their offensive lineup is such a match up nightmare, even LA and Clev have problems stopping the Nuggets. Martin will be fine with Dirk like he always is.. I’ll Take Chauncey over Kidd any day (Kidd doesn’t get his tripple doubles against Denver like he does against Minnesota). Marion is too old and slow for Melo and there isn’t a player on the Mavs roster that can contain Ty. I’ll take Bird ove Dampier and Najera combined as well. I mean Dallas has a nice team, but I feel Denver’s roster has just as much talent if not more but with the chemsitry and potentiol, it’s not even close. If Denver fires on all cylinders, there is not a team that can beat Denver in a 7 game series and I honestly belive this. I know LA has Denver’s number, but I think they have dropped off the map. There isn’t that fire anymore, Artest is a dipshit (check his latest hair style), Pao turned into every other foreign cry baby (Nene included) and Fisher can get the senior citizen discount at Denny’s now. The only team that scares me is Orlando. They are deep beyond belief.. just the classic case of too much talent for one basketball.

The only problem
is playing up to potential for 7 straight games is something the Nuggets have not done all season.
I get what you're trying to say
But I don’t think that’s an accurate generalization. The level of competition seems to dictate the team’s effort on any given night, for one. The other major factor has been the nagging injuries to rotation players. On that last point, I believe that’s what will determine the Nuggets success in the post season.

yes
Also, the Nuggets had an 8 or 9 game winning streak in January. And to win a best-of-7 series requires playing well enough to win in 4 of the 7 games.

Truly playing ‘up to potential’ means getting after it for a 4 game rout, depending on the opponent

You can have a winning streak without playing to full potential
I just meant that to play at your best for a 7-game stretch is hard. No team really does it. I didn’t mean to try to demonize the Nuggets by saying them. I was just referencing them specifically because of the nature of the blog. Many teams have not played up to potential throughout the season, be it because of injuries or playing down to the competition.
Also, four games out of 7, but I’m sure as a fan you would want to see a competitive 7 games if it went to 7. Thats what I meant, playing up to potential, for a competitive 7 game series, because if other teams play up to their potential they’re just as good as the Nuggets. Not one of those series where the teams trade blowouts. Thats more of what I mean.
Nene will bitch slap Haywood all over the place
Nene is playing with more confidence than ever I think, he can turn it up a notch and if Haywood starts giving him more of a challenge than softie pants(Dampier) Nene will step it up.

They didn;t just lose to the Knicks
They got annihilated at home on 2 days rest against a NY team coming off a back to back

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Lost to the Rockets on a Melo missed 3 and terrible execution in the last 1:21
Talk about back to earth…
I think our race with the Mavs will go down to the wire. As long as we win the game against Dallas near the end of the month, we should be fine. If we lose it…

That one's gonna be so tough
At Orlando the night before.
I really wish the Nugs could’ve held on tonight, but maybe the Mavs will drop another one sometime soon. At any rate, I sure won’t count the Nuggets out for the 3/29 game.
