Next years starting lineup..

OK, not really but I wanted to share my thoughts on what would make a realistic and even better Nuggets team next year, I know most fans don't even want to think about next year right now as we head down the regular season stretch to the playoffs, but after watching the Nuggets play last night I could not help but marvel at Marc Gasols play, going 6-8 shooting and finishing with 17 pts, 7 rebounds, and 6 assist in a very competitive game until the 4th quarter when the Nuggets pushed into another gear to win big.   However I can't help but imagine what our Nuggets lineup next year would be if we somehow got a hold of Gasol, imagine Gasol-5, Nene-4, Melo-3, Affalo- 2 Billups- 1.  Not only would we have even more size and a true center with Gasol, but with Nene sliding to what he thinks is his natural position we would be more physical and our rebounding would be much better, for we rank somewhere around 20th this year.

Now, how would we get Marc Gasol?  And not only that, but who else thinks that he would upgrade or downgrade our team compared to that of the smaller lineup of Martin and Nene, not to mention what would we do with Kenyon if we ever made a deal like this?  I don't know how the other stiffs feel about this, but I honestly have a feeling that we need a guy like Marc Gasol, he truly seems like the perfect fit for us and I think with all the injuries Kenyon has had over his career, that he should maybe become a number one option off the bench, I am not sure how this would all work because of Kenyon's contract, or what we might have to give up for him so I wanted to ask the Denver Stiffs what they felt about this.

Marc Gasol ... untouchable?

Hes good

But I’d rather have David Lee. Plus i think Lee is a Free agent? He signed a 1 year this year.

by RPN on Mar 14, 2010 9:11 AM MDT reply actions

Lee's an all-star that's going to get over 10 million

We’re already over the luxury tax for NEXT YEAR, even though we only have like 8 or 9 players signed.

I think we should give Hakim Warrick our biannual exception and leave it at that.

Probably a really good idea

But Kmart may become a great trade piece next year. Billups and Melo need to decide if they can part with Kmart next year. I imagine if Kmart comes back and the Nugs win the title this year that the Nugs will get either Thomas or Warrick for the bi annual or mid level (whatever it is) and stand pat. If they don’t get it done we will probably see Kmart moved. I am a huge supporter of Kmart and have probably been his biggest voice on Stiffs but the injury shit is getting really old.

by Gasus on Mar 14, 2010 11:31 AM MDT up reply actions

I'd be ok with

K-Mart being traded then bought out and signing with the Nuggets at a lower price. But knowing the Nuggets standing within the league they’d get in accused of some type of pre-arranged deal and the deal would be voided.

"I know the game of basketball is one-on-one (oriented), but the pain of beating a defense by the pass — it confuses and frustrates the defense more than just going by a guy one-on-one." George Karl

by NuggetsLife on Mar 14, 2010 11:58 AM MDT up reply actions

Because...

Unless if KMart’s knee injury is much worse than expected, he’ll still be starting material next year. Big Z, on the other hand, is rightfully a backup. And since we aren’t Lebron’s team or the l*kers or the Knicks (Stern is a big Knicks’ fan), Stern is gonna void the trade.

Every nuggets fan was talking about Gasol this summer and last year...

its close to impossible…. hes a great young big man on a very cheap contract… why trade him… only way i see him being traded is part of a bigger trade for a legit all star

by hvino on Mar 14, 2010 9:44 AM MDT reply actions

Why would Memphis do the trade?

Plus, we aren’t the l*kers or the Knicks or a big-market team, so there wouldn’t be any under-the-table dealing anyways.

Also, Memphis is actually halfway decent this year, so they have no incentive to give away their good players that are on very cheap contracts.

Also ive said this a couple of times, but in the summer we could def get strong

this past summer we couldnt because it was important to re-sign Bird (right choice)

but this summer we dont have any1 except Petro to re-sign…

so lets get a legit big for the MLE…. im talking Brad Miller, Marcus Camby, JO

another idea i thought of, do you think Houston would S&T Scola with us… (this guy is so legit and is gna get over looked this summer, dude went 20—25 last night, thats 44 pts on 80% shooting!!) he would fit so well on this team, hes a true hard working rebounder…

I think something like S&T Kleiza, 2 Picks and Balkman if they want him for Scola…

by hvino on Mar 14, 2010 9:48 AM MDT reply actions

We can't

Because of how much we’re over the damn tax for NEXT YEAR

Sign Hakim Warrick for the bi-annual exception. Hess can put some muscle on him, and he could be our PF of the future.

There’s no way that’s enough for Scola. Houston loves him (he just put up 44 and 12), and since we’re a good team those picks aren’t going to be worth much anyways. Plus, they don’t need Kleiza since they have Chase Budinger.

I’m with you 100% on the need for a power forward and not a center. Hopefully Kmart can mentor a Tyrus Thomas or a Hakim Warrick.

by Gasus on Mar 14, 2010 11:34 AM MDT up reply actions

Tyrus is going to get a bit more money than the BIE of 2 million

Because he’s getting PT in Charlotte and although he still has many bad games, his occasional 20-10 games will push up his price a bit.

Yah

But I doubt that we’ll use all of it. We’ve already 5-6 million over the tax for NEXT SEASON with only like 9 or 10 players down. I say we chase Warrick with the BAE, then sign mininum guys. Even like that, we’d still be at 10 million over the tax. That’s a TON of money to pay, and I get what Stan Kroenke is doing.

I am all for adding a legit big man . .

And I would throw the full MLE at Haywood for example, but not sure I want an aging non-athletic center who has never been know for his off court work ethic . . my point it Miller might get really, really old fast.

So, suppose we can’t get Scola, Haywood, Gasol, Thomas, etc (which seems probably given our assets and salary constraints.)

How about going the other way and saying screw it, we can’t match up size wise with the Lakers, but we can put a more atheltic team on the floor. The NBA overpays for big men ’cause finding good ones is so tough (hell we overpaid for Birdman for that reason even w/hometown discount and it was worth it) . .. but the bargins tend to be with the wing players (e.g. AAA), so how about gambling on Travis Outlaw, if he recovers from the season injury he could be a fantastic value signing and is big enough to play fo PF.

I think you get what see with Warrick. I don’t think there is much growth left in his game. He is 27 and hasn’t really shown any improvement since he came into the league. He is not a bad player, but I think we need to gamble a little to uncover some real value (like Birdman/Jones last year and AAA this year).

by Frontrange on Mar 14, 2010 2:44 PM MDT reply actions

Outlaw has played the past few weeks

However, it’s with the Clippers so that nobody but diehard NBA fans care. He’s doing fine, putting up around 14-15 ppg but only 5 rpg as a starting SF.

He’s too bulky for PF. He’s listed as 6’11" and 250 lbs, but I’d guess that he’s more like 6’9" and 260 lbs. That’s like the difference between Andray Blatche and, um, darn, I can’t think of any 6’9" 260 lbs. players not named Nene besides Dwight Howard, except Howard isn’t a good example because he weighs way more than he looks because of the weight of his muscles.

Is Howard really around 6'9''?

Not having watched him much (I admit to not watching many non-Nuggets games), I was always under the impression he was somewhere between 6’11’’ to 7’0’’.

Nene on the other hand, yeah, he’s probably not 6’11’’. A short 6’10’’ or maybe even 6’9’’ seems about right.

by Uh on Mar 14, 2010 6:09 PM MDT up reply actions

Nene is 6'9"

I remember him against Lee in a game against the Knicks. Lee actually had a half inch or so on him, and Lee is definitely 6’10"

Dwight Howard is shorter than Rashard Lewis.

The Nuggets only hope for getting a big man next year

is to trade K-mart at the deadline a la the Cavs and pick up a big man from a team who is seeking cap relief. WE ARE NOT getting Marc Gasol PERIOD. Why would the Grizz get ride of a Big who is making less than 5 mill per? The only other chance at a big would be through the draft but it usually takes a year or two to get returns on a big from the late first round/ second round. The nuggets are stuck where they are unless Stan wants to pony up some $$$$$$$. We haven’t signed anyone for next year and we’re already at 72 million. Bring on the league minimum contracts!!!

Realistic 2010-11 starting rotation and bench

PG – Billups
SG – Afflalo
SF – Melo!
PF – Martin
C – Nene

SG – Smith
PG – Lawson
PF/C – Bird
C? – Petro

Benchwarmers – Balkman, Graham, Carter, and one more useless player

Yeah, I know I made some pretty bold predictions there.

mac koshwal depaul next seasons' dejuan blair

he is a junior, 6’10", and a combination of tim duncan and dwight howard. depaul fired their head coach jerry wainwright. koshwal may decide to leave after this season. if he stays for his senior year koshwall will be a lottery pick if there is a 2012 nba season. that may be another reason for him to leave. wainwright was an assistant coach at wake forest for many years. he is credited with recruiting and developing rodney rodgers and tim duncan.

the point i was trying to make is

if koshwal does not return for his senior year he could be a second round pick. he could wind up being a sleeper in the draft because his team had a bad record.

Thing is...

Dejuan Blair was a pretty big name and dominated the glass in college bball but fell to the second round. Admittedly, I have never heard of Mac Koshwal.

I’m amazed that Thursty hasn’t gone to nohoops4u for his lack of capitalization…

I know last night was only one game . .

But I’d throw the full MLE at Scola. He’d be a great fit for us, can shoot to 16 feet, runs the floor, good passing big man, and brings a little beef. Maybe that is not enough to get him, but if makes Houston pay more for, that’s okay too.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
