You and me both, Kenyon. You and me both.
I was at the Mall earlier this evening with my wife and as we were walking we saw two really tall guys walking our way. I didn't recognize one of them but the other absolutely looked like Kenyon Martin. I nudged my wife, who is nearly as big a Nuggets fan as I am, and said, "I think that's KMart!"
She glanced over in passing and said "Yes, that IS KMart!"
I didn't really want to disturb him, he was out with his bud doing some shopping just like a regular joe. I figure that if I was a ridiculously talented basketball player I probably wouldn't want to be bothered by some fan (no matter how good looking, smart, and talented he may be) so I didn't make a big deal out of it. My wife and I hopped into a store where I was getting a watch fixed. After I had filled out the claim ticket we were told it would be 15 minutes.
We didn't have anything better to do, and I'm a really huge fan, so we decided to see if we couldn't find Kenyon and at least tell him that he's a stud. You know, because he doesn't already know that or anything. We saw him, with undershirts in hand, and I walked up and the conversation went as follows:
NuggBuckets: "Kenyon?" (I know, real witty)
KMart: "Hey, nice to meet you." He shuffled the shirts to his left hand and held out his right.
NB: "Hey, I don't mean to bother you, just wanted to tell you that my wife and I are big fans." I shook his hand.
KMart: "Thanks."
NB: "We think you're playing great and hoping you guys can bring home a championship."
KMart: "You and me both. You and me both."
I wish I would have thought of something better to say, something that would have made him laugh or something, but again, I was trying my best not to be a pain. I now wish I had asked my wife to take a photo, or had a piece of paper for him to sign, something to show for it. I'm not one of those guys who gets starstruck in front of famous people, but meeting KMart was... cool. I'm 6'3" and there aren't many people that I have to look up to, but Kenyon made me feel tiny.
So thank you KMart, for being cool enough to take the time to shake my hand.
Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

If I'd had a minute with Kmart...too cool.
Nuggbuckets- good story. If it would have been me I don’t know what I’d done. I’d like to think of a way to tell him to bank shot that little jump hook that he does because most of the time he pulls that one up short, and the way he rebounds, if the baby-bank hook is off, he’ll definately get the rebound. He seems to like the bank shot anyway. His jumper being off last game at Utah was just a one time deal -I think. And the Defense, Nuggets would be a .500 team without it.
Best-
Most NBA stars enjoy interacting with fans one on one like that.
My dad was /is? good friends with Steve Scheffler, and he and my dad had a similar thing happen to them in Seattle, and Scheff told my dad that almost any nba player will take the time to say hey to fans even in their leisure time. I know that Scheff is nowhere near the star K-Mart is, but still. That was back in like 1996 so things may have changed, but I think everyone wants to hear they’re doing a good job.
forget wins, losses and the rest of the stats
players, coaches and the front office staff are a great group people. kroenkes are very down to earth. stan walks his own dog and anne is ivolved with a pug rescure organization. doug moe would stop talking to a reporter to hold the door for you. coach adrian dantley will always look you in the eye and say hello first. the players are all involved with their own charities. my favorite is the special olympics. pepsi center will host the event and every player shows up. it will always amaze me how accessible the players, staff and the facillity are to the public.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
Great story
I used to be neighbors with Shaun Vandiver. He played a year wth Golden State before moving to Real Madrid toplay pro out there. He was a stud player at CU and was great friends with Alfred Williams of the Broncos (both went to CU at the time and both were the studs on campus). Shaun was one of the coolest dudes I ever met as well as Alfred. Alfred would come to our block parties that Shaun hosted while Shauns’ old man wuld cook ribs on his grill southern style. Shaun was 6’11 and was just absolutely huge. He tought me how to play the game of basketball and my knowledge on the game itself is all b/c of Shaun. His daugher is a stud guard for Wyomings woman basketball team and just dropped 15 points and 12 rebounds on my CSU Rams. The Vandiver family is a very talented basketball family and one of the nicest and most humble families i ever met.
In short, It is very cool meeting pro athletes and like these guys say, they love interacting with their fans. They like to talk to someone who actually looks up to you in more way than one, becasue just about everyon physically looks up to K-Mart, and Shaun haha. Good story Nuggbucket.
Cowboys fan!
I met Kenyon at the Broncos and Cowboys game last fall. It was nice to talk to one of my favorite players for sure. I also had to ask him to bring a trophy to Denver. Hope it happens.
Well played NuggBuckets.

I was thinking about saying something like...
“Say hi to your mom for me.” Because I have a lot of respect for Lydia, the way she stood up to Cuban and all, but then I figured that was more likely to get me a busted face than any credit with Kenyon.

Hahahaha that is awesome… I wish you would have gone with that line. It would have been a much more interesting/intense story! (Not that it isn’t cool the way it went down)
Great story!! How exciting!
How can you not like this guy?! I think this was the perfect conversation!
yay for you, and I’m jealous..

If that happened to me, I’d dig out a piece of paper from my pocket and ask him to autograph it. Kenyon’s nice to kids, right?

Great story!
That’s about how I would handle it, too.
I’d hate to bug a star like Kenyon, but at the same time I am so impressed and grateful with how well he is playing that I would have to say something.
Somewhere there is a picture of a very drunk me and a very drunk Dennis Rodman in Las Vegas. But…. it would be way cooler to say ‘hey’ to a local sports hero.

I have a similar story about Alex English that I’ve related on this blog before. I think you score points with the player when you don’t ask for an autograph or a picture. Nothing can take the memory away so you don’t really need the stuff anyway.
"Woohoo Denver, Yeah... All right Denver justify my love!" ...Homer Simpson
Well played
You’re right not to ask for pics. It’s hard to keep the kid fan inside and not ask for anything but those guys do appreciate that I suspect. Just give em a dap and keep on movin, so to speak. …although there was probably a few others that caught him that day and DID ask for pics. I’ve ran into quite a few players over time and just figure, if you’re in the right places you’ll see these guys again eventually anyway.
K-Mart was cool and willing to chat both times I’ve ever met him though, so your story corroborates mine.
Story about K-Mart
My dad works for the City of Greenwood Village, where K-Mart lives, and he talks to the police from time to time. A few years back, one officer was telling my dad that K-Mart’s credit card had fraudulent charges placed on it. So the officer went to his house with paperwork for him to fill out to start an investigation. When the officer asked if he could come in, K-Mart replied, “I don’t want any cops in my house.” Again, this was a few years ago and who knows if it even meant anything, I just thought it was an interesting story that I would share. All I care about now is that K-Mart is doin work for the Nugs this year!
Great story...
I love the conversation and I can just picture him saying that! He seems friendly, but to the point and commited to doing the best he can to help Denver bring home a championship. I am a huge K-Mart fan and this makes me respect him even more. :)
Carlos Gonzalez is amazing.
