Melo won't play against the Lakers on Friday?

According to an interview with Melo he stated he likely won't be playing for another couple of games!

Ok I know what you're thinking, "How is it possible Melo's sprained ankle is THAT bad??" I know this same sentiment was apparent in a recent front page article.  I've had sprained ankles myself and they do take some time to heal. However, I haven't ever, and will never be a scoring machine like Carmelo Anthony. So why isn't he playing ball when his ankle sprain perhaps isn't THAT bad? Heres my theory, he doesn't want to hurt his numbers. Thats right I said it, instead of playing in games that his team really needs him in, even if you're not gonna get the 110% Melo, he has opted to not play so that his overall scoring numbers are effected.  If he plays anyway and he isn't putting up insane numbers he probably assumes, and maybe rightfully so, that his chances for MVP go out the window.

I'm not sure if that's really what's happening, I'm not in the lockeroo..... well you get the picture.

source via hoophype = Anthony told Yahoo! Sports late Wednesday that his sprained left ankle will likely force him to miss at least the next two games...

Poll
Is Melo actually able to play but has decided to wait until he is 100% because he doesn't want to hurt his numbers??
Yes, he knows this is his golden chance to win the MVP and doesn't want this ankle sprain to screw up his chances.

No way! Melo is a tenacious competitor and would never sit out when he could be playing and helping his team!

I dont support this theory at all melo should return when he's 100%!!!!!

Here’s something from the denverpost “Nuggets Anthony goes full practice on ankle” http://www.denverpost.com/nuggets/ci_14335496. I f melo returns now, I think he’ll revert back to being a jumpshooter and i dont think anyone wants that. So for now, LETS JUST TRUST MELO PLEASE!!

That ankle sprain was NASTY

As I was watching it with a few of my friends, I kept saying that he’d probably be out 2-3 weeks.

Anything in particular make you lean toward that theory?

Or is it just guessing here?

I’m not pretending to know what’s going on in the locker room either, but I do think Melo is not the same “me-first mememe” guy he once was. If you have any links or whatever that backs up that claim, it’d be great if you could post them.

And also, doesn’t playing well in nationally televised games help increase a player’s MVP consideration? Getting seen by a wider audience on a regular basis the way Lebron or Kobe are would seem to have at least a mild effect on MVP voting, I think.

wow what is with you guys!?!!?!?

the ankle looked pretty bad…. also i doubt he gives a shit about his stats cuz he prob knows that if you miss games it also messes w your chances of winning the MVP

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to hate on Melo.

I just think that Chauncy has played on an ankle thats not perfect so why doesn’t Melo come and help the team win? Wear a brace on the ankle don’t drive the lane as much, probably won’t score 30 but perhaps provide an outside presence that allows Nene/Graham/Kmart/ etc some more freedom inside.

I get the feeling Melo is saying to himself, “I need to heal up so I can be the MAN again.” Its a team sport, and Melo IS the man, however he can still contribute to allow for a team victory even if he’s not at full speed. Karl can reduce his minutes and switch up the rotations.

full disclosure: clearly I’m an idiot and Melo camping in the corner draining 3’s would only hurt our chances to take down a high scoring team like the Suns….. wait a sec.

possibly the worst conspiracy theory i've ever heard

Carmelo Anthony was a legitimate MVP candidate for the first 3 months of the season. But after his injury, it has CLEARLY been proven that while Carmelo may be the best player on the team, Chauncey Billups is clearly the MVP of the nuggets team. Subsequently, I have not even heard Carmelo Anthony’s name mentioned in regards to the MVP.

I have also heard some people speculate that Melo is perhaps sitting out to protect his scoring lead. Well, Carmelo Anthony did not average about 30 points a game by accident. The reason he averages 30ppg, is because he usually DOES score that much in every game. This isn’t like Johan Petro having a 50 point game and then sitting out to win the scoring title because it was obviously a fluke. Melo can score whenever he wants, sitting out to win the scoring title makes no sense.

stop coming up with crazy theories people. He just wants to be 100% before he comes back. Even before the ankle injury, you could see Melo wincing in pain in almost every game. He was clearly banged up all over the place, and he doesn’t want to have to deal with lingering injuries/pain down the stretch when the games REALLY MATTER. It is likely that Karl keeps saying Melo is going to play because he believes it is a (slight, albeit) competitive advantage. It is amazing how one bad game can spawn the panic and terror I’ve seen here in the past 24 hours.

Nugs don't win when Melo scores 30

If he scores 40+ then they can beat anybody. If he scores 20 to 24 then they can beat anybody. Melo knows that he can’t get the scoring title and take this team to the finals. He has to play team ball like last year which will have him averaging around 24 points per game. How is that for a theory?

by Gasus on Feb 5, 2010 10:17 AM MST up reply actions

Read this comment again. Check whether or not it makes sense.

It doesn’t.

Do you think Melo is so mentally and emotionally fragile that he is constantly thinking to himself, “at least I’m still scoring the most points, everyone only loves me when I’m scoring the most points, I know that at the end of the season I can’t beat Kevin durant and kobe bryant anyways ‘cause I’m not good at scoring points, so I might as well enjoy the feeling of scoring the most points while it lasts”?

by Uh on Feb 5, 2010 4:48 PM MST up reply actions

No

He realizes that his team is better when he scores 20 to 25. He is a team player in the big scheme of things and wants to win the title. He knows that once he comes back that he has to tone down his scoring or he will look terrible because the team will win better without him if he is jacking up 20 plus shots every night trying to score 30 points. Good night.

Wow, this post is ridiculous

Where in the hell did you come up with this one? I admit, there may be reasons Melo is sitting out that are questionable, since it’s hard to understand why he was supposed to be back like 4 games ago and still isn’t, but this theory is just out there. Personally I think Melo has about a 15% chance at winning the MVP and I think he probably feels the same way, so there’s no reason he would be sitting out for his numbers because the only way he wins the MVP is if the Nuggets pass the Lakers for first in the West and in order to do that we need him.

by GoldenNugget on Feb 4, 2010 10:06 PM MST reply actions

He has all but lost a chance at the MVP missing this many games

it couldn’t possibly be that Melo has the best interest of the team in mind now could it?

+1

He’s already dropped out of the conversation. It is possible for him to be mentioned again as an MVP candidate but only if he starts averaging 30-10-10 and the Nuggets don’t lose another game. But I would bet that he’s more concerned about being healthy come playoffs.

by NuggBuckets on Feb 5, 2010 2:33 PM MST up reply actions

Why is it

When Chauncey waits until he’s 100% to come back everyone says its a smart move but when Melo does it he’s faking it or not tough enough or trying to protect his numbers/mvp status?

by Zachm219 on Feb 5, 2010 1:13 AM MST reply actions

MVP

the more games he missed the lower his chances in being MVP. He plays 60 games he won’t win MVP

by EviBina on Feb 5, 2010 6:19 AM MST reply actions

PAAAAAAHHHH!

What is this crazy talk?!

Like snowboard said up there. If Melo comes back he will just be shooting jumpers and play less defense than he already does.

Melo has been great this year because he’s been punishing people in the post and getting to the freethrow line basically at will. The main reason he isnt back is because his explosive first step (which he has been known for) is not there. He cant be as effective without it. Not to mention that he’ll just get blown by off the dribble (think about when the magic recently beat the celtics. KG played with his gimp knee but he couldnt even pursue Rashard Lewis on his game winning layup!).

Also. You dont want Melo being Kobe. Taking like 7 more shots a game but averaging less points a game. You also dont want Melo pulling a Gilbert Arenas (No I’m not talking about guns here, ha!) and should be happy he’s not Tracy McGrady (Imploring to the coach he can play when he’s actually at like 60 percent. Not to mention he has a 23 million dollar contract).

In conclusion, I do think that Melo wants the scoring title but not at the expense of his team and winning the championship this year. I’d rather him get healthy and help this team make a run for that gold ball and not know if he’s gonna be in or out of the lineup. Chauncey tried to come back early for Christmas against Portland (I believe) and didnt play the second half. He rested and then proceeded to play the best month of his career. Get healthy. Come back. Do work.

I have a theory

Fans need stuff to talk about in between games to keep themselves occupied. Who will be traded? Who will be the next coach? Just how bad is AC?

Rec'd

Yeah, we’re all just hungry to watch the games and trying to occupy ourselves in between.

so is there any official word that Melo won’t be playing tonight? I was really looking forward to this Nuggets-Lakers showdown but without him it won’t seem the same

by NugNugz on Feb 5, 2010 9:59 AM MST reply actions

I think he is out

But Kobe may be out as well. If that is the case, it will be interesting to see the two teams go at it without their respective stars.

How is it possible that a Nuggets team with this much talent can be 7-5 at home?! Things have gotten so bad that fans are clamoring for J.R. Smith to return.

2. CARMELO ANTHONY
Kobe Bryant plays through any and all ailments. Melo uses any and ailments as an excuse not to play.

Just when the T'Wolves are looking better, Love stomps on Luis Scola and lands himself a two-game suspension.
