Melo and Billups shouldn't have to try out for Team USA...
In my latest guest column for SB Nation, I ask why Team USA is making recent Olympians like Carmelo Anthony and veterans like Chauncey Billups endure the charade of try outs.
Write respectfully of your SB Nation community and yourself.

It's because
Well I actually have no clue.
There’s a Kmart add right above the FanPosts. You know, the store, not the player.
But really, everybody already knows pretty much who will be on the team.
"Left hand, right hand, it doesn't matter. I'm amphibious." - Charles Shackleford
""He’s a stiff." - The Legendary Doug Moe
"We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors." - Weldon Drew
"I really didn't want it, but now that I've won it, it's nice. It's an honor. It's nice to know people don't think you're a total idiot. ... It must have been a poor year for coaches." - Doug Moe...talking about winning 1987-88 Coach of the Year award.
"We're just tough, man" - Chauncey Billups
Isn’t so that the guys who actually have to try out have top notch quality guys to play with/against at tryouts?
What's the matter? The CIA got you pusing too many pencils?
Meh
I guess that’s kinda right. However, they still want to see of the players will put in the effort. Personally, I’d rather see 12 scrappy guys playing for Team USA than 12 superstars slacking off.

My Dad explained the hot brick test to me once. He said that college admissions would do just a s well if they lined up all the applicants and handed each one a hot brick. Whoever held on to the hot brick the longest would be admitted.
The tryouts (as well as a lot of things in life) are simply a hot brick test. Colangleo wants the guys who want it the most and that is what the tryouts are about. The nine returning guys obviously want it, but which are the guys that want it the most?
"Woohoo Denver, Yeah... All right Denver justify my love!" ...Homer Simpson
A variation
On another thread you used the analogy of people lining up to jump off a bridge — that’s what this hot brick test sounds like to me.

Devil's advocate
Didn’t team USAs troubles start when pros were picked on reputation. It seems that tryouts are as much to test chemistry between players trying out for the team as it is to judge each individual’s player’s talents.
I am about 95% sure that is not the case
Their troubles started with none of the good players wanting to go. If you start shafting guys like Chauncey then they will have the same problem with the elite players not wanting to play.
Yes they should
I feel that everyone has to try out including Lebron and Kobe. But that’s the good part. The best team roster possible. I’m more concerned with a NBA Championship then US Gold for Chauncey n Melo.
