Game 58 Preview and Thread: Nuggets vs Pistons (7pm MST)

Detroit Pistons at Denver Nuggets, Feb 26, 2010 7:00 PM MST

Billups_vs_pistons_medium The Good News: In three games versus his former team, Chauncey Billups is averaging 28.3 points per game. The Bad News: The Nuggets are 0-3 against the Pistons since adding Billups.

Star-divide

The particulars ...

Records:
Denver:
38-19 (24-5 at home, 14-14 on the road)
Detroit:
21-36 (14-16 at home, 7-20 on the road)
Denver current streak: Won 2. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games.
Detroit current streak: Lost 1. They are 5-5 in their last 10 games.
Injuries:
Denver: Renaldo Balkman
(mid-back strain) is out and his status is listed as day-to-day. Kenyon Martin (left knee contusion) is a game time decision tonight.
Detroit: Chris Wilcox (sore back) is questionable.

Opposition's Take: Detroit Bad Boys

Good news for people who love bad news ...

Good News: Since Chauncey Billups' first game with the Nuggets (this time around) on November 7, 2008 against the Dallas Mavericks, Denver has defeated 28 NBA teams at least once.

Bad News: The Billups led Nuggets have yet to defeat only one NBA team ... the Detroit Pistons (0-3). It's time to remedy that tonight.

Good News: The Pistons are currently 21-36 this season, but don't let their record fool you too much. Tayshaun Prince has missed 32 games this season, Richard Hamilton has missed 27 games and free agent prize Ben Gordon has missed 19 games. If the Pistons weren't decimated by injuries this season they could easily be in the playoff hunt in the East and we all know how the Nuggets love beating up on playoff bound teams.

Bad News: The Pistons are currently still a sub .500 team.

Good News: In their first meeting this season on December 10th, Melo finished the night 16-28 from the field (57.1%) and scored 40 points against the Pistons in 43 minutes.

Bad News: Rookie second-round pick Jonas Jerebko (12 points) and reserve Charlie Villanueva (27 points) combined for 39 points for the Pistons in their 101-99 win over the Nuggets, virtually negating Melo's monster night.

Good News: The Nuggets sank a season high 16 three-pointers last night and breezed to victory over the Warriors last night. Everytime the Warriors made a run ... the Nuggets responded. Ty Lawson, who suffered a sprained left thumb earlier in the week, looked great and sank 2-3 of his shots from distance (should have been 3-4 if Billups had gotten him the ball a half-second earlier before the half).

Bad News: The Pistons are healthy and this time around they will have Will Bynum (10.7 ppg), Prince (10.8 ppg), Gordon (15.1 ppg) and Hamilton (18.8 ppg) back in the lineup, after all four missed the previous game against the Nuggets.

Good News: The Pistons road record is an atrocious 7-20 this season as they come to the Pepsi Center, where the Nuggets have one of the best home-court advantages in the league and are currently 24-5 in Denver.

Bad News: The Nuggets will be completing the second game of a back-to-back tonight where the Nuggets have a 6-8 record this season. Denver is also coming home after the dreaded late night California game against the Warriors and will have to find their legs tonight. The Nuggets could also once again be without Kenyon Martin tonight against the Pistons.

Good News: The Nuggets have one of the most defined rotations in the league. Denver throws 8 guys at you and they all know exactly what their job is when they are on the floor. Even with an injury (like perhaps the one to Kenyon Martin tonight) the Nuggets have a specific sub off the bench and they too know their role when filling in for Starter X, Y or Z.

Bad News: This healthy Pistons team is a hard team to scout right now. They have been throwing 10 and 11 man rotations at their opponent and different guys have been having good nights for Detroit. Lots of bodies will be thrown at the Nuggets and they will have to adjust to the game on the fly.

Good News: Through 10-games in February the Nuggets have out-rebounded their opponents just five times. In the four-games since the All-Star break however, the Nuggets have out-rebounded their opponent three-times (vs. the Cavs, Celtics and Warriors) and hold a 3-1 record when they have the edge on the boards ... the lone loss coming to the Wizards, who out-rebounded the Nuggets.

Bad News: In the Nuggets loss to the Pistons earlier this season, they were out-rebounded 37-43 and Denver gave up a 15 offensive boards to the Pistons, 10 combined to Ben Wallace (6) and Jonas Jerebko (4). No wonder the Nuggets checked on Wallace's availability before the trade deadline.

Good News: When the Nuggets play unselfish, team basketball they are the most exciting team to watch in the NBA. Against the Celtics, the Nuggets notched 24 assists and last night against Golden State they recorded 29 assists and won both games going away.

Bad News: Denver ranks just 16th in the NBA in total team assists (just over 21 per game) and can turn in some very selfish performances ... like the 12 total assists against the Wizards on Feb. 19th or the 14 total assists against the Pistons on Dec. 10th, both game were losses.

Good News: The Nuggets have dropped three-straight games to the Pistons, with Billups, by just 10 combined points. (January 9, 2009: 90-93; March 3, 2009: 95-100 and December 10, 2009: 99-101)

Bad News: The Nuggets have dropped three-straight games to the Pistons, with Billups, by a combined 10 points.

Views you can use:

As far as I can tell ... there is a bit of a popularity contest going on in Twitterland between Nuggets players. Arron Afflalo, Ty Lawson, Renaldo Balkman and J.R. Smith are often trying to get new followers and they each come up with different ways to attract fellow Tweeters (mainly asking for help from their friends and coming up with goals for certain time frames). With that, let's take a look at the Nuggets and a couple members of the Nuggets' "extended family" on Twitter based on their followers ...

Rank  Player/Media Member  Twitter Name Number of Followers
1 Johan Petro Frenchi27 317,645
2 Carmelo Anthony carmeloanthony 81,936
3 Ty Lawson TyLawson3 17,212
4 J.R. Smith JR_Swish 15,069
5 Arron Afflalo AAA_afflalo 3,543
6 Chris Andersen Birdmancamp 2,134
7 Renaldo Balkman kOoLwiTaK 585
8 Scott Hastings ScottHastings 546
9 Jason Kosmicki nuggetsradio 465

I'm still not sure how Petro has so many followers, maybe all of France follows him? The most active guys are definitely Swish, Lawson, Afflalo, Petro and Balkman. Melo chimes in from time-to-time and I'm not quite sure if that's Birdman's official account or not (it isn't verified).

Again, I like Twitter for it's ability to give you some great information from news/sports sources and it gives you another way to follow your favorite team. J.R. Smith posted a picture of Afflalo's high-water pants, Balkman posted a picture of a steak he was about to devour and the guys let you know when they are heading to the gym (early and often) and other random thoughts.

Update: Just wanted to add ... J.R. Smith's new red star tattoos on his neck, AWFUL!

Second night of a back to back? Check.

Traveling east after a late-night nationally televised game? Check.

Smells like a trap game to me.

You use the phrase "trap game" even more than I do...

Amazing.

I think that this IS a trap game, but last night’s wasn’t like many people thought. I feel like doing a schedule fanpost.

You have me mixed up with someone else

The phrase is new to me. I think I’ve used it thrice my entire life.

Regardless, I like the idea and it does help describe games where the Nuggets struggle against bad teams, like the loss against the 76ers at home.

I would agree about last night’s game not having the trappings of a trap game. Four times.

Exactly

I wrote this same thing in my fanpost a few weeks ago. This was a predicted loss.

Good News: The Nuggets have dropped three-straight games to the Pistons, with Billups, by just 7 combined points. (January 9, 2008: 90-93; March 3, 2009: 95-100 and December 10, 2009: 99-101)

I’m no mathemagician, but based on those numbers, they’ve lost 3 games by a combined 10 points.

by jmdeshazer on Feb 26, 2010 10:23 AM MST reply actions

In one of those games, Afflalo went CRAZY

I think it was the January 9 one. I still remember him starting in the place of Rip Hamilton and putting up nearly 20 points, as well as going 8-8 from the FT line in the clutch. Maybe that game was why Denver really wanted him?

And since Nate italicized “with” both times he used it, I’m assuming that Billups missed one of the games. Probably the January 9 one in which Afflalo went crazy.

And by the way, Nate...

It’s supposed to be “January 9, 2009”

Because back in January 2008, Iverson was still jacking up 20 shots per game for the Nuggets.

Just using italics to show emphasis. Billups has played in all three Piston games. Scored 30 in the first one, 34 in the second one and 21 points earlier this season.

2008 should be 2009 … I was living in the past!

I hate myself

So last night my unkle calls me up because they are in town to see my cousin play basketball for Regis. I decline, after already having gone to 4 games in which they lost by double figures every times and my cousin having seen as many minutes as Ronaldo Balkman does for the Nuggets. The only bright side of this whole situation was the free dinner they would buy me after the games, which I felt like they owed me anyways for making me watch girls basketball. Well, after declining last night my unkle sends me a text that I could barely make out since he is probably the worlds worst speller. But from what I understood the Detroit Pistons basketball team was sitting across from them at the Cheescake Factory.

Son of a bitch.

Not only do I LOVE the Cheescake Factory, but I have NEVER seen any famous people in real life, ever! And it’s bad because it seems like everyone except for me has those stories about seeing famous people all the time, there was even a fanpost up here not too long ago about someone who ran into K-Mart. Anyways, I don’t have one of those stories and I have desperatly been trying to obtain one for a while now. I would have loved to talk to Rip and the guys about Chauncey and that whole ordeal and how they are gonna feel after we kick their asses tonight. But, no. My life story right there.

girls basketball

If you are single, you’ve got to be nuts passing up going to the games and a free dinner. Watching young, in shape, athletic, and tall women for a couple of hours…what a drag. Plus you’ve got an in with your cousin so if anybody looks interesting she can introduce you. Hell, you could become their mascot and get passed around!

DU had a pair of twins on the volleyball team a while back and I got a couple of dates with one of them because someone I knew knew them. 6-1, blonde, a twin, and she was good at my favorite sport to play.

You are nuts if you aren’t taking advantage of the opportunity.

2 best things about going to a womens basketball game

the first is watching the lesbian couples making out in the stands. the second is the man that brings his wife and kids to the game sitting behind the lesbian couple. the father will always explain to his kids that when 2 women make out it is erotic and when 2 men make out it is sick. the look on the wife’s face during the father’s explanation is priceless.

I thought their point was defensible...

… ie – the Nuggets cannot be considered a championship contender as long as they demonstrate a lack of mental focus to beat the sucky teams. The criticism especially wasn’t warranted last night. But how many of us would have grudgingly agreed if there comments came immediately after we were outscored by 20 pts in the 4th quarter of the Wizards’ game.

excepting the SA game, it seems like we start ok enough against the bad teams to totally suck in the second half (Wizards, Clippers, Timberwolves).

Worst matchup for us this side of OKC. The bounces, the calls – everything just goes to shit.

haha wahtever dude

i give melo his props. just when he forces it becomes very fustrating. like i said in the wizards game thread, i have no problem with a player struggling. but when they dont play smart it kills me. whatever already, ill stop being critical

I know it's frustrating to see a player shooting that percentage...

but would you rather he become passive every time he misses a few shots. Great players are always going to think they can take over, that’s what makes them great players. Sometimes they’ll have bad games as a result, but the last thing you want is the guy going into a shell. That’s what leads to one-and-dones come playoff time.

Not like the rest of the team's been tearing it up

Can’t put it all on Melo. He’s off tonight, but jeez.

This has to be the Dumars curse

First he passes on Melo in 2003
Then solves our AI problem by giving us Billups
Then gives us Afflalo for a sack of balls

Denver loves Dumars but Karma is on the Pistons side

Hahaha, I love the theory.

I’ll take 4 losses a season forever as penance for all the good he’s done us.

Maybe these L's to Detroit are the price we pay

Carmelo instead of Darko, Chauncey for AI, Afflalo for peanuts – can’t say we aren’t due some karmic retribution

That's funny

I thought it was Stringer, too, and then I clicked on it and I was disappointed when it was Denzel from Training Day.

Damn you're right

I guess Training Day Denzel is pretty confident too. But not as cool as Stringer.

He's on my fantasy team

And his stats are mini-Lebronesque.
Seriously, 20, 5, and 5 on decent percentages and 1.5 steals per game for a rookie? Incredible. Add the fact that his number of turnovers aren’t too bad and he’s a very good fantasy option. The only reason why my team isn’t light years ahead of everyone else is because Melo has missed a good deal of games. I drafted Melo at 7th, Steve Nash at 14th…’Reke at 44th and Nene all the way back at 67th.

"I really didn't want it, but now that I've won it, it's nice. It's an honor. It's nice to know people don't think you're a total idiot. ... It must have been a poor year for coaches." - Doug Moe...talking about winning 1987-88 Coach of the Year award.

The STIFF LIST (as of 7/26 by Nate)

STIFF #1: COLORADO ROCKIES
The Rox have lost eight of their last 10, including six in a row. During the six-game losing streak Colorado has been outscored 33-13 ... and they might soon be the reason by buddy Rory has a massive heart-attack. But there are still 63 games to go and an upcoming eight-game homestand is hopefully just what the team, and Rory, needs to turn things around.

STIFF #2: MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES/DAVID KAHN
Replacing a 24 year-old point guard with a 29 year-old point guard is just a sound NBA move ... uh? Kahn handed Ramon Sessions a 4-year $16 million contract last offseason and just gave the same deal to Luke Ridnour this offseason. In order to make room for Ridnour, Kahn shipped Sessions and young big man Ryan Hollins off to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Delonte West (who is still facing weapons-possession charges). Maybe Ricky Rubio will get to the T-Wolves before Ridnour's contract expires, but don't count on it.

STIFF #3: TRACY MCGRADY
McGrady has been shopping his services this offseason and after getting nibbles from the Lakers, Clippers, and most recently the Bulls ... T-Mac is still without an employer. The 31 year-old guard, with a rich injury history, apparently is not ready to accept a reduced role. Will McGrady's stubborness land him on a lottery team where he'll try to prove he can still be "the man" or will he accept being a role player and wind up in Chicago gunning for that elusive title?

STIFF #4: DANNY AINGE
The Celtics did lose defensive ace Tony Allen to the Memphis Grizzlies, but re-signing Marquis Daniels to a one-year $2.5 million deal is a little crazy. Daniels should be thanking agent Mark Bartelstein ... maybe the rapper can sing his agent a song. (Daniels is in the yellow shirt in the video)

STIFF #5: NUGGETS SLEEPING ON SIZE
The Nuggets decided to bring back Anthony Carter on a one-year $1.3 million deal. Do the Nuggets really need a third point guard heading into training camp over another big body? Check out some names still on the free-agent market: Louis Amundson (yes he'll require more money), Fabricio Oberto, Kwame Brown, Anthony Tolliver, DJ Mbenga, Nathan Jawai, Josh Boone, Kyrylo Fesenko, and Joey Graham. Denver still has the bi-annual exception to spend ... so maybe there is still hope of grabbing somebody.
