Big 3
Going back to the Jordan days, I remember discussion that a team typically need a "Big 3" of all-star caliber players to win the championship. More recently, it seems that teams are able to win with a "Big 2" and a good supporting cast. Denver has had a big two, first of Anthony and A.I., and now Anthony and Billups for a while. With the recent offensive improvement and increased focus on rebounding from K-Mart, does Denver finally have it's "Big 3" of all-star caliber players? If Martin can keep this up, even without adding another big man, I think they have a good chance, even against the Lakers. I have no idea where this version of K-Mart came from, but I'm glad he's here, and hope he stays for good. If K-Mart keeps playing at this level when Anthony returns, we'll start to see a lot of blowouts.
I say yes, Denver has it's Big 3, and can legitimately challenge the Lakers this year. Last year, the Lakers could safely double Anthony off of Birdman, K-Mart, Jones, and A.C. This year, the only rotation player they can safely leave is Birdman.

"This year, the only rotation player they can safely leave is Birdman."
I’m pretty sure they could never even put a man within 7 feet of AC and have no negative consequences.
ac won't be playing in the playoffs unless there is an injury
If Karl only runs an 8 man rotation now, no way he goes to a nine in the playoffs
Petro and Ac will get the same amount of time
48 minutes a game…on the bench, that is of course unless management pulls the trigger on that tuna fish sandwich deal I proposed earlier…
a.c. petro = j.v. starters at best
i dont want to hate on ac i just never really understood what he brought to the table thank god for ty lawson because if i had too see ac botch another oop, force a bad pass, or god help us chuck another three i might just lose it

Denver may have a big 4
In Melo, CB, Martin and Nene. Nene is a top 5 Center in the league when he plays his game and doesn’t get caught up with crying to the refs. Martin has been playing like the best PF in the NBA in the las 21 games. Yes better than Timmy D, not so much Dirk, but Martin avraging 15 and and 12 in his past 21 is amazing. If he can play like that in the playoffs, keep hismid range jumper at 60% and grab 12 boards a game with AA slowin down Kobe and Melo and CB doin their thing…. I don’t think LA can beat Denver.
Totally agree, Nene has the potential to make it a big 4
I just hope Nene and Kmart don’t get too burned out when playoff time comes. Then again, that’s the same problem the Nuggets’ve had from Day 1, lack of a fourth big.

Yea
If only we could just have the sub .500 teams beat by the th quarter every game and let Allen and Petro take some minutes and all or bigs can get some rest. Either that or another damn big cough Chris Wilcox.

Dont forget about JR.
If he plays anywhere like he was playing last year in the playoffs this team is unstoppable

The whole "Big 3" thing is blown out of proportion
Ever since Jesus, PP and KG got together. Every championship team has tons of great players, some have more All-Stars than others, but there is ALWAYS one common factor, a superstar. And we definitely have that in Chauncey, err, Melo.
I agree
I might mangle your meaning here, but for almost as long as I’ve been following the NBA, it seems to me like with almost every championship team, there’s that one guy who’s really the key, and all the other pieces around him could be changed for other similar players and you’d still have the trophy at the end.
Literally, almost all the championships since I’ve been watching come down to these guys, in my mind:
- Jordan
- Shaq
- Duncan
- Olajuwan
And now after last season, I might begrudgingly add Kobe Bryant to the list, but in my mind he would be the least impressive of that group. Unless you can convince me that the 3-headed monster was as good as Gasol & Bynum.
Really, starting with Jordan’s first ring, that’s all of the titles up ‘til now, except for the ’04 Pistons and the ’08 Celtics. I consider those two teams exceptions because I actually don’t think either one had just one guy who everything else was built around. Those were more complete team efforts.

indeed to 04' pistons were the anomally
Every other team has had a superstar and a star. Jordan and Pippen, Shaq and Kobe, Kobe and Gasol, Boston’s big Three, Wade and Shaq, Duncan and either Robinson, Ginobli or Parker (yes i realize that Ginobli and Parker have played together for their championship runs, but only one has actually stood out as the de facto number two in a given series) only the 04’ Pistons stand out as a team with no clear cut number one or two. The fact is that while Detroit had no superstars, they had 5 stars. Chauncey a star as a scoring pg, Rip a star as a scoring wing, Prince a star as a defensive wing, Sheed a star as a big who can stretch the floor and d’s up well, Ben Wallace a star as the most dominant defensive player (at the time). The Nuggets…well it will be interesting to see. Melo is a superstar, you can try and argue that all you want but he’s put up the numbers to justify his standing. You might argue that he doesn’t have the playoff success of a superstar but I’d say the fact that he took a franchise that had been in the dregs of the NBA for nearly a decade and put them into the playoffs every single year he’s been in the league stands alone as a barometer of his success. Chauncey is certainly every bit of the second star persona. After that? it gets hard to say. Look at the three dynasties of the past 15 or so years. The Lakers, Spurs and Bulls all had a bit more then just two stars and role players. The bulls always had a great PF, whether it was Grant or Rodman. The Lakers had a great floor general in Harper (so did the Bulls for that matter as they had harper for the latter three of their championships) and both the Lakers and the Spurs benefited from probably the greatest clutch shooter ever in Robert Horry. The Bulls and Lakers had a deadly 3 point specialist (Kerr/Paxson and Fox for the Lakers). The Spurs always have had three scoring options. Do the Nuggets have enough talent to complement their two stars? It’s tough to say. Yes K-mart, or even JR, could fill out the third scoring option. K-mart is also the defensive beast, but is it enough? Would you say K-mart is as good as Rodman? I would find a hard time arguing that point. Is JR as good as Manu? No, he could be, but lacks the discipline (and of course the superb flopping ability). Do the Nuggets top two compare to the likes of Jordan/Pippen or Kobe/Shaq? No, look i’m as big of Nuggets fan as there is but to compare the likes of Melo and Chauncey to those other two tandems is ludicrous. We are so close, it’s what makes it so frustrating, but honestly I feel like unless one of the role players, whether it be K-mart, Nene or Smith, steps up to the next level, it will take some fortunate circumstances to get us the gold ball. I truly feel we are one piece away from glory, but otherwise we will continue to fall excruciatingly just short
K-Mart has already stepped up to the next level
Aside from a consistant 3 pointer we couldn’t ask anything else of him.
I wish Nene would realize how big he is. It’s so frustrating to see him “dance around” a moving defender instead of posterizing him.
With JR you hit it on the head… DISCIPLINE. I hope that for the sake of Denver basketball fans everywhere he learns this.
i think you meant to say aside from a consistent jumper
That’s what K-mart needs, IMO, to make the next step to a bonafide star in the league. Right now he’s got the d, the athleticism, the mentality, but without a consistent mid range shot he’s still a role player, but a damn good one that’s for sure
Please don't get me wrong though
K-marts evolution this year has been the most satisfying part of this season for me
Billups was their clear cut #1
The dispensable superstar is even forgot about in Denver
rip hamilton was the pistons leading scorer with 18 ppg
out of all the teams in the nba hamilton’s ppg average was the lowest out of all the leading team scores in the league.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
Billups isn't about stats
And I know you know that because you are an intelligent poster on this site.
The thing I wonder
Guys like Ginobli, Parker, Pippen, Horry, etc — how good are they really? If Tony Parker hadn’t played his whole career so far with Tim Duncan, what would his numbers be like?
Call me crazy, but as far as I’m concerned, the verdict’s still out on Dwayne Wade. I mean, he’s a great and amazing player, but is he a real championship winner? Or did he just benefit from Shaq’s last dominating year?
I just kind of think that a lot of role players are made to look really good when playing alongside that rare superstar who poses unsolvable problems for the opposition.

without jordan when he retired the 1st time
the bulls were eliminated by the knicks in the eastern conference finals. phil jackson was still the coach. pippen played with houston with dream and barkley and never went to the finals. the portland team he played on was loaded and deep never made it to the finals. i think last year’s laker team had more talent then any bulls team jordan played with.

I was a huge Scottie Pippen fan. He was a great defender and a very versatile offensive player. He carried that Bulls team to the Eastern Conference Finals WITHOUT Jordan and nearly beat the Knicks. That is a HUGE HUGE task.
The Portland team he played on had a bunch of talent and egos. That Houston team was past it and everybody was on the verge of being washed up.
Pippen is a no doubt Hall of Famer and made things a lot easier on Michael Jordan and won countless games for the Bulls.
Denver Stiffs.com: Defending the sovereignty of Nuggets Nation.
i was a huge pippen fan until
scottie refused to play because an inbounds play was called for toni kukoc. it was against the knicks in the eastern conference finals. pippen sat on his ass on the bench with the game on the line and refused to go on the court. kukoc made the shot anyway. when he first went to central arkansas he was the manager. i will always admire the way he came into the nba. sitting on your ass with the game on the line against the knicks in the eastern conference finals in not very hall of fame like. pippen was a very outstanding player in the nba. top 50 to ever play the game or hall of fame……….i don’t think so tim.

great question
Seems to me this Nugget team has more in common with the 04 Pistons than they do with other champion teams. Besides the obvious Chauncey connection, this is a team of solid players more than a team with a dominant superstar plus some role players. All due respect to Melo, but he doesn’t dominate games in the way Kobe or LeBron do. The Nuggets kill you with multiple options on offense and (when they want) a defense that forces turnovers and makes teams pay for going to the hole. This sounds more like the Pistons to me than the Lakers, Celtics, Spurs, et al. If Denver can give consistent effort on d, rebound better and stay healthy, they are a championship team not just a contender.

def... but with the superstar they never had :D
billups= billups (surprising i know!!!!)
Rip= JR
PRince=Afflalo
KMart=B Wallace
Nene= R Wallace
Carmelo is like a mix between RIp/Prince but with great offensive skill…
center position is close
detroit had 6’9" ben wallace and 6’11" rasheed wallace. denver has 6’9" kmart and 6’11" nene. the difference is ben is a better shot blocker and rasheed has 3 point range. kmart can guard any player at any position on the court. nene relies on his athleticism and is weak fundamentally.
pick up a calf every day pretty soon you will be picking up a cow
c'mon, don't dis K-Mart's 3pt skills
Apparently he’s been posessed by the ghost of Chuck Person and can’t miss from 18ft on out.
