The Nuggets have all but decided to trade Anthony

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/12/09/nuggets-management-figures-out-it-has-to-trade-carmelo-anthony-finally/

Star-divide

The Nuggets have all but decided to trade Anthony if he does not sign an extension with the team by the trade deadline, and Denver’s management team believes Anthony is fully prepared to play out the season and become a free agent, multiple sources told CBSSports.com….

I didn't see this posted anywhere else, but I've been away from my computer.  To me, this is the nuggets saying, okay it's almost December 15th.  Get us your best and final offers.  If they are going to do this, do it sooner than later in my book.  Sounds like they still like the Favors deal.  Favors plus two first round picks, plus a Marc Gasol signing next offseason would get them competitive again very quickly.

edit:  Also, this decision meshes very well with the reports of an extension for G.K.  Contrary to what some posters have been saying about not keeping Karl if you are rebuilding, I think Karl is exactly the coach you keep if you are rebuilding.  His strengths as a coach are precisely what you need when rebuilding.  The comparison has been on this site, probably originating with Andrew on the FGK site.  Karl is the mechanic who takes your broken down honda and gets it running smoothly.  He's not the guy who gets your supercar firing on all cylinders - that's phil Jackson.  The nuggets appear to be on there way to being the broken down honda again.

If Melo wont sign an extension

who will trade for him? I doubt anyone will risk anything of value for a rental. If Melo wants to be a free agent, Melo becomes a free agent. Simple as that. Forget Favors. It aint happening.

Remember when the Colorado Avalanche use to mortgage their future and deal for rental players just about every season back in the “Glory Days”??? Some team might be willing to give up some assets to make a title run now … Orlando especially.

Fo sho

I guarantee O-Town would be willing to give us a first rounder and a scrub or two for a one year rental of Melo.

There was actually an article that was on ESPN (maybe it was the TrueHoop)

that said there would be tons of teams willing to take on Melo for just the rental.

Since Melo is keeping his options open the Nuggets should deal him as a ‘rental player’ and get as many assets as they can and then sign him as a Free Agent in the offseason! haha Let a man dream!

Well, there have been some in-season moves like this in the NBA with Antonio McDyess, Brent Barry and more. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is I think Chuck Finley and the Angels … I could be wrong though.

I wish the billionaire who owns the Nets could convince Melo of his Brookyln plan

That way we can trade with the Nets, and not the Knicks. I would rather have Favors and first rounders than some mediocre Sgs, I wouldn’t even trade AAA for anyone on the Knicks roster straight up except Amare and even that is debatable because Amare would want top dollar and he sucks at defense.

Lets let Melo talk with the Russian dude.

by CloudBurst on Dec 9, 2010 1:18 PM MST reply actions

I wouldn't touch Amare with a 10 foot pole.

He’s one unlucky play from being blind in one eye and ending his career. I hope it never happens, but I wouldn’t bet tens of millions of dollars on it.

He is predisposed

Sure, any player could suffer a career ending injury. Amare is predisposed to injuring his eye again. That’s why he now plays with goggles. He’s much more likely than the average player to get injured. Kinda like Kmart.

Don't forget about his knees!

Amar’e is KMart 2.0

The Knicks are going to regret signing him in a couple years when his knees give.

If we trade with the Knicks (if it comes down to that)

Make sure we end up with Eddy Curry’s contract, I’d love to piece together a trade with the 76ers to bring in Andre Iguodala…

Dani Gallorini I don’t think is gonna be that bad of a player, he certainly passes a lot more than Melo, and have a nice jumpshot as well.

Then maybe flip Kmart's expiring for Chris Kaman or something

Or just ride it out with a back court of Nene/Kmart/Shelden/Birdman we might not be in too bad of a shape.

Article Throw it down

is talking about, says nuggs are not interested in Iguodala, they’d rather rebuild w/ young assets

by Melonugg on Dec 9, 2010 2:15 PM MST up reply actions

Shit it would help if I read it lol

That right there tells me they’re already lining up with the Nets, Favors (If coached right) will eventually be a beast and the draft picks will help out a lot.

If we end up with Favors, I’d be for extending KMart (No more than the MLE, if not the BAE) to kind of mentor Favors and learn to be a beast.

by CombatChuk on Dec 9, 2010 2:19 PM MST up reply actions

The problem with that approach on Kmart

is that if you do manage to sign him for that contract, he’ll turn into Iverson 2.0. He’ll be unhappy and make the locker room miserable. Move Kmart as quickly as you can, though if they trade melo they probably just let his contract expire, and he can be injured for some other team next year.

exactly

I think they have learned their lesson. When they got Melo, they tried to build with veterans around him. It left them a playoff team, but unable to be a consistent contender and also unable to bring in assets to improve.

Unless you are L.A. and have sellouts to every game and huge revenue, this model doesn’t work very well. Your superstar is going to make huge money, then you need players on their rookie contracts to keep your salaries in line. If you are paying max money to your fourth and fifth best players like the nuggets were with Camby and Kmart, you are screwed.

JR gets resigned

He’s young enough (like 24) and will give a hometown discount.

KMart we’ll either let him walk or re-sign him cheap

Chauncey I think he still stays and gives these “youngins” a vet presence

Nene is young (28) where I think he’d stay too

Billups

depends on what they get in the trade, and what it would take to resign him. If they are rebuilding they won’t pay him $14 million next year, especially if they get Harris in the deal. They’ll have Aflallo and Forbes at 2, and perhaps J.R. Simply don’t need Harris, Lawson, Afflalo, Forbes, Smith and Billups.

I think if Melo is moved, Billups won’t be far behind. I just hope he doesn’t end up with the Lakers or Heat.

I don't see why we want both Favors and Marc Gasol

We keep Nene, which has been our best player this season, and we have a log jam in our front court for minutes. And I think getting another Small Forward in the offseason takes priority over another big man. Though if we do not get Gasol, we do need another big man. That is our biggest dilemna right now. Can somebody find a list of players who will be available at SF position for the next season? Or will we slide JR or Forbes into our starting 5 at SF? I would not be disappointed with JR as he will be able to score most of what we lose with Anthony, as well as us becoming a pass first team. Find a SF and a PG to replace Chauncey if he does not agree to a lower contract and/ starts to play better.

That is what we need most for Melo. Doesn’t necassarily mean getting Gasol, but a decent SF and maybe a passing PG who sees the whole court instead of finding himself a shot.

NYC gives us a cheap SF with potential in Danilo Gallinari

He’s only 22 and I do think he’d be a good fit here…

Quitter's People United Member #35

by CombatChuk on Dec 9, 2010 3:07 PM MST up reply actions

He is a good SF

but, like Melo, relies on volume scoring. I have seen a few games where he has many more shot attempts than points. But I will say he does get to the line better than most people. I would still rather try for Favors and find a SF this offseason. Vince Carter is going to be available, so why not offer him a decent contract to come in and fill in? I just think a Nene/Favors frontcourt is good enough and instead of finding another big man, we find someone to either provide the offense we lose with Melo leaving, or a lock down defender for him. Or trade with Orlando now and take Vince as a rental and grab Pietrus. Then we still have the ability to pursue a big man this offseason while taking care of other areas as well.

Harrington

I think you get Gasol, keep Nene, and slide Harrington to the 3. Also if we do this deal you can address the 3 with one of the first round draft picks. I don’t see a jam at all. Kmart will be gone, and I won’t really mind if williams is on the bench.

C: Gasol, Bird
PF: Nene, Williams
SF: Harrington, 1st rounder
SG: Afflalo, Forbers, maybe J.R.
PG: Harris, Lawson

That’s not bad, and depending on the package you get back, you might have two other first rounders to sprinkle in there. Or you could package and move up for a guy.

Honestly I would like whoever takes Melo they have to take Harrington as well

Harrington does not rebound or defend sufficiently at the 4, and chucks shots like he’s in a contest with JR

His contract will become a huge problem for us if we rebuild. He is not a good fit with a young, upcoming team. Also he probably has 1 or 2 years left before he becomes totally horrible

It will be hard to get much for him if it isn’t a sign and trade, won’t it? But if he doesn’t do a sign and trade, he may be screwing himself out of millions, won’t he? I’m confused. But what else is new.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
