Nuggets at Bobcats recap: 1,000 has to wait...

You don't get to 1,000 wins in the NBA without a few losses along the way.

Star-divide

I'm sorry for the rushed post-game recap but I got roped into a dinner meeting tonight.  Luckily the Nuggets game started at 5pm MST so I was able to squeeze this in before heading out.  I appreciate everyone's understanding and am sure our fellow Stiffs will offer substantial analysis!

One quick thought I had at the game's conclusion.  Tonight's loss was the Nuggets first of the season to a sub-par team when the Nuggets had ample rest before tipoff.  At least the Nuggets didn't blow a lead...they never really had one...

Here are some random observations from the game...

1st Quarter

...Carmelo Anthony was off - make that way off - throughout the first quarter, finishing 1-6 from the field.  As pointed out by Altitude's Scott Hastings during the quarter, Melo has too much body movement on his shots.  At what point should we be openly questioning how Melo's contract situation is affecting his game?  Ok, make that now.

...for the second game in a row, we see Gary Forbes and J.R. Smith playing together, which essentially debunks George Karl’s assertion from a few weeks ago (when J.R. was in Karl's doghouse) that there aren't enough minutes for both players.

...Charlotte finishes the quarter with a 14-5 run.  And that was with the game slowed down to a snail's pace.

2nd Quarter

...the Nuggets open the quarter with small lineup including Forbes and J.R.  Again, about that whole "not enough minutes" thing...

...the Nuggets cut the Bobcats 10-point lead down to four while Melo is on the bench.  Perhaps Forbes and J.R. play together more often?

...Ty Lawson showcases two aggressive moves to the rack that get the Nuggets their mojo back but it begs an obvious question: why is the diminutive Lawson often the most aggressive Nugget?

...when Chauncey Billups, Nene and Melo come back in, Charlotte's lead grows.  I wouldn't read anything into that but it was a first-half oddity to be sure.

...late in the quarter, Altitude does a great job showing a very young Karl doing his thing as a point guard at the University of North Carolina.  Great footage find!

3rd Quarter

...the third opens with good play but bad early third quarter passes.  The game would see-saw from there.

...the Bobcats' PA announcer might be more annoying than the Nuggets after made shots by the home team.

...I just realized that I really don’t like the dark blue road jerseys.  The lettering is amateurish and it seems like the Nuggets don’t play well in them to begin with.

...Melo continues to take tough shots and worse, it seems like his tough shots are followed by opponent makes.

...my appreciation for Nene’s all around game is growing.  He's a very underrated defender and I'm not sure why we’d want him traded.

...as if we needed more proof that Melo is just "off", he suddenly can’t make a free throw.

4th Quarter

...for the first half of the quarter, Billups is very aggressive and keeps the Nuggets competitive.  But unfortunately his three-point touch went dry within the last three minutes.

...I think it would help Melo's game tremendously if he stopped assuming he's going to get fouled when he takes the ball inside and just try to make the close-in shots he keeps missing.  22 points on 21 shot attempts is never good.

...J.R. clanks a three-pointer off the side of the backboard...are you kidding me?!

...when Kwame Brown makes one of two free throw attempts, you know it's not your night.

...Billups tries to be the hero.  Memo to Chauncey: Melo and only Melo should be taking game-ending shots.

NON-STIFF(S) OF THE NIGHT

-D.J. Augustin and Gerald Wallace: Augustin and Wallace out-played their counterparts on the Nuggets - Billups and Melo - combining for 14-28 shooting, 11 rebounds,11 assists and just four turnovers vs. Billups/Melo's 13-34 shooting, 10 rebounds, six assists and seven turnovers.

STIFF OF THE NIGHT

-Al Harrington: I love Big Al, but he has to get out of his shooting slump one of these days.  Harrington finished the game "shooting" 2-8 from the field.

PARTING SHOT

Boston beckons.  The Nuggets will have played at Boston on a back-to-back for three consecutive seasons including tomorrow's game.  The Nuggets won in Boston in 2008 as part of their coming-out party with Chauncey Billups on board.  Last season, they got squashed in the pseudo-Garden.  I'm looking forward to the rubber match but I don't like Coach Karl's chances of winning number 1,000 on Wednesday night.

Hey atleast this marks the first loss of this

Soon to be four game losing skid. This team this year is awfull I’m sorry but last year and the season befor were better teams. I can’t figure it out but they better get it going or this will be at best a .500 season. I’m not happy and I shouldn’t have called into work to stay home and watch this crap. Fuck

Tough loss

Would have been great to steal this one. Augustin was money tonight. He impressed me. These are the type of road games we have to find a way to win though. When Chauncey put us up by three at the end I thought wed do it, then DJ hits one right back. The last 5 minutes of the game we should have our best lineup on the court. Chauncey, JR, Melo, Harrington and Nene. If we aren’t going to start the game with our best 5 we might as well finish with them.

Could be an ugly road trip

Hopefully we can win Toronto at the very least.

Denver first.

I'm guessing that when the Nuggets play Toronto

An old Nugget schools em…. Toronto’s up and down, but they do play quite well at times.

by TakeFive on Dec 7, 2010 8:08 PM MST up reply actions

Probably our best shot at a win on this trip

It will be very tough though. There are basically no playoff teams in the West playing like we do on the road.

It’s a quarter of the way through the season, we are way way down with the bottom of the league in terms of road wins. I thought this game would be an indicator of if our team was up to the challenge of turning that around. I think we are gonna have a really hard time and need to regroup at home.

PLAYERS SHOULD BE EMBARRASSED

THE PLAYERS disgust me. This team that George Karl helped to create with his guidence and Patience totally disrespected their coach by NOT SHOWING UP for this game. What a bunch of crap self-egos to sleep through this game.
That said, GEORGE slept through the game without couching…just let ‘em shoot from outside, forget driving to the hole.

Totally agree with Melo taking the last shot every time. Billups needs to get it out of his head that hes still Mr. Bigshot. That ship has sailed. Melo looked a lil better tonight but still off in my opinion. I don’t know what it is but Melo seems distant from the team. He is still playing hard but just seems distant.

Anyways its on to the next one. I’m pretty sure were gonna lose 2mrow but you never know.

Also here is a cool article about Melo, Paul Pierce and ……. Hot Tubs :

It's still not a good enough excuse to lose on the road though

Have you seen Charlottes from line? (I’m guessing you have if you watched the game tonight.) We’re talking Stephen Jackson (6’6"), Gerald Wallace (6’8"), Tyrus Thomas (6’9"), Boris Diaw (6’8") and of course Nazr Mohammed (who?) and Michael Jordan’s illegitamte child: Kwame Brown. There’s no reason rebounding should have been an issue tonight.

Nugs tend to do well against

Teams we are supposed to lose to. I see us pulling off the upset in Beantown.
I remember people were angry when we lost to Cleveland before beating Boston.
I actually thought we would lose before the game started, just thought that Charlotte does well against us when Melo is struggling.
Guys, this tram is not complete at all, wait before KMart and Bird come back before we start making playoff predictions. Be happy that we have been winning so many games without these key contributors.

That would be an epic win on the second of a back to back though.

Boston is money at home They are 9-1. Plus, they have the top defense in the league. They’ve had the gold standard for team D for a few years now.

Boston is a much tougher team than Charlotte

The Nuggets rise up to the competition

It is a bad habit, but we do it, so you will probably see a different Nuggets team than you saw tonight. Funny to think that we played really really shitty and still only lost by 2. We should have been demolished no matter what opponent it was the way we came out to play.
I think this team has a little more fight than people give credit.

It will be embarrassing

A team like the Celtics would totally expose the selfish and sloppy way we have been trying to win games. Not to mention, our guys will just be tired tomorrow and likely won’t make shots.

I mean a loss is a loss. But if the Nuggets could somehow challenge them tomorrow, cause a couple of problems for them on defense and lose an entertaining game by less than 5 or so, I’d be really happy.

Mainly, it’s just going to be embarrassing having the whole Melo drama start up again while all the prognosticators on TV start speculating about the reasons for how ugly we have been playing

by Melonugg on Dec 8, 2010 7:56 AM MST up reply actions

Exactly how was Carmelo supposed to take his "last shot" from where he was standing?

I’ve never seen a basketball player as clueless about court positioning as Anthony. He simply has no idea how to receive the ball to give himself a good opportunity to score.

I also have to laugh every time he drop-steps into a double, or even triple team, from the post because he has his head down. Even funnier is when he still tries to get the joke of a shot off, like the officials are going to bail him out by rewarding his clumsy play.

He just has no way of helping the team when he’s not shooting well. Carmelo simply doesn’t have enough gray matter in his skull to help his team when he’s not having a good scoring night — dim bulb.

Let him go take stupid, contested 22-footers somewhere else, after holding the ball so long his rebounders have to clear the lane, of course. If he can yield a Chris Kamen-type big man, a couple of draft picks, and a backup small forward with a pulse, just do it. This team can compete with JR starting at the 3.

by jmpmk2 on Dec 7, 2010 8:07 PM MST reply actions

JR starting at 3, considering the way Carmelo has played the past two weeks, would be an upgrade.

You restructure your offense so that Nene is the 1st post option, and then sit back as the team actually starts to move and create shots for each other.

More than anything, it’s addition by subtraction.

by jmpmk2 on Dec 7, 2010 8:28 PM MST up reply actions

So Melo has had 4 bad games and you want to replace him with a guy who barley has back to back good games. No thank you.

by VicTor W on Dec 7, 2010 8:31 PM MST up reply actions

No.

I want to replace him with JR and a couple of good pieces in return that can help this team win. Namely, someone that would allow Nene to move to the four and assume the main post role, and a three that doesn’t stand with the ball and take 15 bad shots a game.

As stupid as we’ve seen JR be at times, he’s never been as stupid as Carmelo in a shooting slump. There are dozens of players in the league that can shoot 38% from 20 feet when they take 20+ shots. That ain’t exactly special.

I think the entire offense would open up when you get rid of the volume shooter, who requires a clear out and a half-assed pick and “stand” 24 feet from the basket. Carmelo is an offensive plague.

by jmpmk2 on Dec 7, 2010 8:42 PM MST up reply actions

What?? When JR is in a shooting slump he continually shoot contested threes. Thats one of JR’s biggest knocks he does not know when to stop shooting when he is cold. But he has been much better about it this year.

Meloooooo!!!

by VicTor W on Dec 7, 2010 8:48 PM MST up reply actions

He's absolutely been better this year, and I'd argue last year was a solid improvement as well.

An even bigger difference this season is that he seems to be finding great spots to receive the ball for open shots, and I can guarantee you he figured this out while be benched for Aaron Afflalo (who does this as well as anybody). No longer is he just standing on his favorite corner waiting for somebody to notice him, but he’s cutting to open space and giving the guy with the ball a passing lane. Now, he’s able to receive the ball cleanly, and he already has his feet set.

The result is that he’s shooting for a decent average, and not headed in wild swings.

Call a TO

I suppose your real point is Melo’s poor play and shot selection, but to answer your original question, CB or GK calls a TO and runs an inbound play so that Melo can be in position to take his 2 or 3 pointer (could take it into OT too). He does make 9 out of 10 …

I can only assume.....

How important it is for even “star” players to continue to develop their game and learn new moves. Melo looks like he stagnated over the summer and refs aren’t interested in ALWAYS
bailing his ass out.

by TakeFive on Dec 7, 2010 8:15 PM MST up reply actions

I really thought Anthony was coming around last season...

…before everything went to hell, when Karl had to leave, of course. He seemed to be posting nice and low, coming off picks with a purpose, and making quick decisions.

He’s seemed to forget everything he’d learned.

He’s a totally different player. Remember all those big assist games and huge rebounding nights? I have a feeling we will never see that again. It’s time for more of the same volume shooting, occasionally monster nights but most inefficient 25/6/1 outings… with a whole shitload of technical fouls.

I’ve always said Carmelo should pattern his game off of Paul Pierce.

Not the flashiest player, but a really similar midrange game, and the guy just DOESN’T take bad shots. Everything is within the flow of the offense, and his head is always up, ready to make a pass if the opportunity presents itself.

Really.

Anybody with an organized basketball background can see it: Carmelo has Low Basketball IQ

Just watch the way Aaron Afflalo reads a play and reacts. Then, watch Carmelo.

Afflalo, within a split second of receiving the ball knows if he has an open shot, a clear path to the hoop, or an open player to pass to. And not only that, but he can also adjust his initial plan while being executed depending on how the defense reacts.

Anthony catches the ball, waits for the defense to settle into its best possible position, and then makes a bull-headed decision to either take a contested jump shot or wildly drive to the basket. So, what happens when he takes his jump shot? Well, he’s waited longer than three seconds to do it, so no one can rebound. What happens when he decides to drive? Two defenders close down, and Carmelo never even notices, forced to take a desperate or awkward shot, and never acknowledging the two players that just became WIDE open.

It’s just really frustrated to watch a million dollar talent with a 10 cent brain. He has so much talent that will never be fulfilled as long as he remains so self-important.

AAA is a shooting guard

and has to have more awareness of the entire going’s on on the floor. Melo is a scorer….this are very different roles….I’m not sure it’s an entirely proper comparison…..

What I'm talking about is basic basketball awareness.

It’s present in every truly good basketball player. It doesn’t matter what position you play.

And the only reason Carmelo is a “scorer” is because he takes over twice as many shots a game. Afflalo shoots 10% better from the field, and doesn’t take contested shots. Give Afflalo 20 shots a game and he’s a “scorer” too.

Great points

What’s funny… I know George Karl really hates holding the ball. He just doesn’t seem to get it across to Melo or he chooses to put up with it because he is Melo. I think GK sometimes gives too much freedom to players. With Iverson, it was the same thing. Those guys were big stars and I guess George just figured he wasn’t going to be able to change their games too much.

I really hate the way Melo stands still with the ball for 3, 4 seconds at a time – and then he almost always shoots a jumper off the dribble. That literally makes it impossible for other guys to get into offensive rebounding position because the entire flow of the game stops while they are waiting on him.

Once he starts, he can't stop.

He can’t pull up for a shot, he can’t pass, he just continues toward this premeditated path to the basket, no matter how the defense reacts.

great observations

nothing new with melo. he still has the same problem mike jordan had early in his career. he needs to trust his teammates. the sooner he gives up the ball early in the offense the sooner he can get it back. he is a ball stopper on offense. good point about finding other ways to contribute when he does not make shots. gerald wallace is 6’7" and 210 lbs. he almost won the rebounding title last season. melo comment about getting 18 free throw attemps a few games back sums it up for me. he makes only 13 for 72%. classic case of talking the talk but not being able to walk the walk.

A well needed dose of reality

Congrats to the Bobcats we really struggled just to stay close all game.

Karl doesn’t deserve the majority of the blame for this one. Of course the timeout at the end was terrible. In the end, the Nugs just played lax all game, not once did I see any fiery passion or genuine anger from anyone that we were mostly dominated by a 8-13 team. We already know this is a bad road team with no killer instinct. For the first time in a while it entered into my mind that the Bobcats might be a better team in most aspects of the game except raw talent.

Basketball is a team game. This team is 3-6 on the road, incredibly lucky to be 7th in the West and just got dominated by the Charlotte Bobcats. The shot at the end was total fool’s gold, don;t even see how it’s worth arguing about

I've still always believed

that the coach is ultimately responsible for everything that goes on on the floor. If he doesn’t like the energy, call a timeout (as Pop often does if he doesn’t like the energy in the first minute!) jump their asses like there’s no tomorrow and make sure they’re playing twice as hard following the timeout. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen Karl do that. He’s so hand off a lot of the time, he has nobody to blame but himself.

A well earned loss all around. If it had been anyone better than the Bobcats and this would have been a 20 point loss.

It's just an observation.

I thought it was interesting. It may not mean much. But I mean when literally every team that has the same road record as you is that bad, it at least hints that something is wrong with the Nuggets record, doesn’t it?

Half of the games have to be played on the road, so I think it says something important, even if it is early. So you’re saying there is only one team in the whole league that is the exception to the rule and that it’s the Nuggets? I gotta take issue with that

The thing about the KMart and Bird thing

Is not that they are all-stars who will light up the scoreboard, but as Kenny Smith says, they will put the people in the right positions.
When Bird is coming off the bench, he just brings an energy to the entire unit. That energy has been lacking in the Memphis game and Charlotte game.
I think KMart will be a huge upgrade over Williams (remember how he was pretty much our MVP before he went down).
It might be a blessing in disguise that KMart is injured now instead of later in the season like what has happened in the past. (knock on wood, because KMart is unpredictable as we know).
If Karl could find a way to bring Williams off the bench for spot minutes before the end of the half that would be great too.

p.s. Harrington needs to pick it up. Get out of the slump dude, we need you!!!

After he broke his leg in college, had microfracture surgery on his right knee, then had microfracture surgery on his left knee. I mean no player has ever come back from 2 microfracture surgeries, so he was supposed to not even play at all.

KMart and JR defy conventional wisdom, so that is why I try not to use logic to predict how they will perform.

Gotta love the haterz. Keep that hate a comin'

by JR15 on Dec 7, 2010 9:25 PM MST up reply actions

I'm not saying you are wrong

But don’t you agree… bad habits are hard to break.

You saw it with Birdman coming back? Did he make a difference? Definitely, but we still had the exact same problems as before and kept giving up big leads and barely squeeking out wins. He had a little impact but mostly we were the same team and we kind of got more lucky than good to squeek out all those wins against bad teams.

People are expecting too much out of K-Mart. I am not convinced he will ever be healthy again. He has a lot to worry about. He already said he wasn’t rushing back because he needs to think about playing in the future and his next contract. Do you really think K-Mart can be the same player? I don;t think so. And by the time he comes back, we could be in such bad shape that there won’t be anything left to save.

Honestly guys, I believe K-Mart may have already played his last game in a Nuggets uniform. At this point in his career, with so many injuries – he is better suited to being a role player and he won’t really change our team too much, unless he can somehow make other guys play better.

Its not that KMart will do much

It is the presence he brings and that mental attitude he brings.
Also just stating it, but even when Bird was back, either Melo wasn’t playing at 100% or Chauncey wasn’t playing. We never had a fully healthy team to be around Bird to assess what the team looked like.
I still think a lot of giving up those leads has to do with attitude and KMart can definitely help adjust our attitude problems.

In 2009

The WCF year, I believe we had a winning record on the road. It was only a game or two above .500.

But the important thing being is that year, I think we were actually above .500 on the road for most of the season. We were consistent. 3-6 on the road is pretty bad, I believe it’s definitely a cause for concern because soon the hole will be almost too big to get out of.

Where we stand right now, getting to .500 on the road would be a huge accomplishment. And that’s a very average road record. It’s gonna be nearly impossible to do this month

that makes you think they would win two out of the remaining three on this trip? Unless they’ve got some magic “on” button that can suddenly make the players play better and Karl coach better, they’re quite a way from good basketball. The recent winning streak was a product of playing at home against inferior teams, and they were barely losing. Boston and NY aren’t inferior teams, and they are on the road.

Road record

In ‘08-09, the Nugs’ road record was 21-20.

Last year, I think it was 19-22.

I plan on researching this for a future fanpost, but I’m guessing that 21-20 is probably the best road record in the history of the franchise.

Another thing I’m going to try to figure out for that fanpost: have the Nuggets ever won a 7-game playoff series withou homecourt advantage?

I am expecting my research to confirm my hypothesis: the Nuggets have stunk on the road for the whole history of the franchise.

Another thing I want to research: of all the 64 NBA champions, what is the worst regular season road record? I am expecting that every NBA champion in history has has a road record that’s better than one game over .500, but maybe I’m wrong.

The Houston Rockets won an NBA title as a 6 seed. That was one of the only times in history that a team won the title with a road record that was near .500. I looked it up once, Generally, all of the teams that have made it to the finals are near the top of the league in road record, which makes a lot of sense really

Well hello SDcat

What shall we argue about tonight?

jk

Didn’t get to see the entire game, but saw a lot of it. Melo is definitely not sick, there’s something else up. I think he’s getting flustered.

Billups, wtf was that? Aweful waste of a last shot if you ask me.

Hate to be the one to say it, but kind of ironic how Karl didn’t get his 1,000th tonight. In a way, a microcosm of his career; just can’t get it done in crunch time, espeically ON THE ROAD! LOL

Game was so predictable man

I pretty much knew we were going to lose tonight. It made too much sense to not happen. The way we lost was so anticlimactic like you said too. Get dominated most of the night, play a bad enough team that they couldn’t put it away – and then lose on such a comically bad last play that just sums up this team.

I fear with Karl likely on deck for a few more years our championship window has shut completely.

1000 wins aside, this was a really big game for our team. It would have told us if our shakey little win streak was legit or just a stroke of good luck. It was a huge game, and we got our answer. Just more of the same from Karl and the Nuggets this year – and likely 3 more years ahead

I dont' want to be too overdramatic

but, I was thinking to myself when this game was unfolding, “…and this recent home winning streak means what exactly?”

A 7 game winning streak is always nice. But… usually when you here teams go on 7-game winning streaks there were a few road games in there, and not all of them were against sub .500 teams like ours was. If we go 1-3 on this road trip (which looks very likely after tonight) you can probably expect a new Column. At that point we’ll be 14-9 with Dec. 15 right around the corner. I’d expect trade talks to heat up at that point in time.

Two big problems:

Carmelo – Another horrible, horrible game. At this point it’s not just the flu, it’s something else. His contract. Lala. Kiyan. Something is on his mind and it clearly isn’t basketball right now. 4 turnovers and a night of horrific shooting combined with some awful defense.

I thought Melo shot us out of this game and was a total black hole on offense. He would get the ball and just drive into a group of defenders waiting for him. I was really angry with his game tonight, because he definitely seemed disinterested. I had not thought that about him this season until this game. Nene played 150% better than Carmelo tonight and Melo would not look for him on the pass at all.

Ty Lawson – I am starting to seriously worry that Ty Lawson’s game simply isn’t cut out to be a great in the NBA. He has shown no improvement yet this season and seems absolutely timid when he has the ball. He’s not playing great defense and still can’t shoot FTs. I know it’s early but I expected more from him at this point.

Birdman, get well soon. Harrington just isn’t cutting it right now and while he’ll break out of his slump, we could really have used your presence blocking shots and bodying Diaw.

Sorry we couldn’t get you #1,000 in Charlotte, Karl. I hope Carmelo wakes up for Boston tomorrow or it could get really ugly.

Swats.

by Colin Neilson on Dec 7, 2010 9:49 PM MST reply actions

Totally agree about Melo

I saw enough of him tonight to make a pretty good estimate of what the deal is. He’s starting to lose interest. If he keeps it up, he’s no longer helping us win basketball games, and at that point in time you have to trade him for the benifit of the team. He just seems like he’s now going through the motions. I never thought he was before, but I do now. It’s like he’s just half-hearted in his effort and not really engaged in HELPING us win. It’s almost like he’s just doing enough to keep his scoring average up. At this point, I’m not digging Melo’s play.

by TakeFive on Dec 7, 2010 9:55 PM MST up reply actions

I'm starting to feel really bad about the Harrington signing

Did you see what Tyrus Thomas and Gerald Wallace did to him all night?

The guy is declining really quickly. He basically sucks if he’s not consistently scoring double digits off the bench, because he is so much of a liability anywhere else. Shelden is more valuable because at least he knows his limits. Have you also noticed… Harrington has no chemistry with anyone on this team. He’s basically a worse version of Melo who tends to take a lot of questionable shots and slack off on defense. That 5 year deal was too much man.

Lawson, like you said, isn’t getting it done. But GK needs to realize that he can’t play with Chauncey. He actually played quite well when he was the only PG in the lineup.

melo will not improve

He is an overvalued dumb player. He isolates and takes too many jumpers in part because he lacks the explosiveness down low to get his shot up. He needs to pass off when he gets doubled in the lane. Please melo just get back on d …he looks lazy right now and is no leader.

agree

he cannot finish at the rim like wade or lebron. like those 2 or not they have also been on the all defensive team. last season durant passed melo by. this season it will be blake griffin. no way is he worth a max contract. max money should only be for max effort at both ends of the court. he wants the most but gives the least.

He's just not a team player

He’s a pure scorer, and that’s it. I think when he wants to be a team player, or rebounder, or whatever it may be he can; but at heart Melo is a “me-first” type of dude. If he just committed more to off-the-ball movement and coming off screens to hit j’s in motion, he’d be deadly – maybe even the best player in the league. But he just seems so committed to stopping the entire flow of the offense, and doing one of two things: A) jab-step to jump-shot, and B) driving to the hole. He’s just too one-dimensional right now.

The problem is

He’s so committed to proving he can beat you one on one. But he doesn’t have the athleticism to overpower like Lebron. Then, he just doesn’t have the court awareness or the versatile moves of a Kobe Bryant.

Melo’s deadliest weapon is his mid range game. The rest of the time, he is completely dependent on the refs calling a foul, because he simply doesn’t have the raw physicality of an elite finisher nor the basketball smarts to use his size to score in multiple ways. He simply runs over people, or shoots a jump shot over them

every time he jab steps

he gives the defense a chance to rotate. GN is correct with his observation about off the ball movement and coming off screens. he can score more points, take less shots and do it in less time. he seems very determined to do it the hard way. coach karl has said it before many times. it is about being efficient.

if the nuggets only had a brain

Nene is like number 1 two in fg% give him the damn ball…we are the same dumb team we have always been and need to trade melo for someone who can play d and understands the game and a big who can block shots and rebound. Why was gk having melo guard diaw and not double only to get abused. No timeout?..Chauncey aren’t you smarter than this……

by Bigdorph on Dec 7, 2010 10:27 PM MST via mobile reply actions

With Melo's slump

Would NYC want to give him a max contract? The way the Nuggets play better when Melo is not on the floor during this slump is not helping Melo either. I think Don Walsh will notice that stuff too.
I don’t think Melo is doing this on purpose. He is just having a string of bad games in a row. If I were him and wanted out of town, I would put the best all-around numbers of my career so I could get a nice, secure contract somewhere else. The more Melo plays bad, the less of a chance he is getting max money on another team.

No

Melo’s been in the league for long enough. People know he’s a pure scorer, and a somewhat one-dimensional player. Thing is, he’s probably the best at what he does in the entire league and that’s enough for teams to salivate over his services. The Knicks especially; they’ve been in the doldrums for so many damn years they’d do anything right now to secure Melo.

Over reacting

By everyone

Melo is in a Slump he will get back to his form
Al is in a slump he will get back to form as well
Jr is still inconsistent as hell and I would never trust him to start a game he has had about 4 good games and people wanna give him the keys to the franchise
Nene is still incosistent as hell, at some point you have to put the blame on Nene for not demanding the ball and grabbing more boards. He could be a top 5 big man in the league we cant blame others for him not living up to his potential.
AAA is still a great role player with terrific defense
Chauncey is still a shoot first chucker who still thinks he is Mr. Big shot
Ty is still a average back up PG

Man literally 4 not even really cause he didn’t play at phoenix and vs chicago he had the flu

So Milwaukee, Memphis , and Charlotte so 3 bad games and you guys are straight turning on Melo say it aint so. The same guy who got 20 boards a cpl weeks ago, the same guy I seen passing the ball out of the double team great not even two weeks ago. The same guy who up until a week ago, was having maybe his best yr avg 25 9, 3 on 47% shooting.

Are you guys serious??

and the JR quirp. When in Jr’s career has he ever gotten praise from Karl about his work ethic? That’s what was showing me he is finally willing to take on a bit more. He is the best 6th man in the game right now. If/when Melo leaves, I would not be the least bit surprised if JR tries to take on the weight of being the anchor of a team.

One thing has been a constant

Throughout Melo’s ups and downs, one thing has always remained constant

They simply don’t play as a team while bringing the best out in each other. All of the great teams in the history of the game, they had either a certain culture, or such strong leadership, or such great chemistry that collectively they were always more than the sum of their parts. Normally, there would be one star, the focal point of the team that made everyone around him better and brought out the best traits in his teammates.

The Nuggets have none of that. They are particularly lacking in heart, mental focus and leadership. Likely, some of it is due to the Melo situation and all of the drama surrounding the team because of it.

That is why when Melo was having all of those great games earlier in the season, we still found plenty of ways to lose. Why? This team is okay, pretty good actually. But they are not special. They are simply very talented, very rich, and ultimately not much more than the simple sum of their individual parts.

yep melo is what he is

A great crafty scorer…but a volume player who lacks above the rim explosiveness, intelligence, defense and leadership. If we Max him this may be as good as the nugs can be. Lets trade him before the rest of the stargazed media finds out what we already know. If melo was not from oak hill and Syracuse, didn’t help team win the championship there would not be as much fanfare for him. He is really good…but not great. We can trade for Deng,Gibson and two number ones tommorrow and get just as far in the playoffs this year As well as have a brighter future

still hope

We can trade Kmart for kaman or biedrins ..then we have size, rebounding and in Manana case another low post prescense. This will improve the defense, rebounding so that when our offense misses shots and plays dumb we can still win…if we can’t we could be going down the same road as every year except he one where we went to wcf…remember that year was the exception not the rule. Nuggets win 50+ games every
year then flame out in the first round due to poor rebounding and dumb offense….we need to break the habit and make some moves

Studesville I think it is (what an awesome name, except I’d pronounce it Studsville if it were up to me). I saw his press confrence today, and it was really impressive. Ugh

So… I’m not trying to blame anyone here.

But seriously, in a situation like that how can the team be so discombobulated? It seems like Chauncey had one plan in mind, Melo had a different plan, and George Karl wasn’t sure. Meanwhile the rest of the team and the Bobcats were just kind of shocked at how clueless everyone else and haphazardly runs down the court where the game ends.

How does that even happen in pro sports? It’s kind of funny actually

Here's the thing......

My goodness, 4 games is what you are going to use to evaluate his value to the team? I think that is being trigger-happy.
The problem is that if he’s playing poorly…doesn’t that reduce his trade value?

Evaluate towards the end of January. By then I think you’ll really see what is what. And as the February trade deadline approaches you are going to have more teams willing to part with more parts depending on their situation.
I think this Dec 15 target is just too soon.

It's cuz he's not just playing sluggish

He’s making aweful decisions. He’s not just missing shots, he’s missing shots he shouldn’t be taking in the first place. And like I’ve already said a million times before, if the Nuggets training staff feels he’s good enough to go out there and play professional basketball for 40 minutes a night, it can’t be THAT bad.

It's like when Melo got injured last year and didn't sit with the team

Andrew called him out for it wondering what the deal was and people were coming up with the excuse that the chairs might hurt his legs when he sits down, even though no matter how injured I see players across the NBA the never miss games. It’s just bogus how people will come up with excuses these days.

I've read rumors and innuendo.

I have read Melo saying he’s leaving his options open. He’s given us 7 years of awesome (mostly) play and trips to the playoffs.

I’m not eager to see him leave, but I’m also not going to begrudge. If the team wanted him to sign an extension within 6 months, why did they give him a year to do it?

That’s the thing, it’s not set in stone that he’s going anywhere.

I guess that’s why I’m not getting to worked up about it. It’s not to say that I think it’s not going to happen. I just don’t know. Nothing would surprise me at this point.

Karl is coming back

JR is coming back

AAA is the FO being lazy, he’ll be restricted so they’ll just match an offer that’s not crazy

Chauncey will be back

It’s not like the team is getting blown up.

Why else would Melo not want to re up with the Nuggets?

Not so sure on Chauncey

If Melo leaves, I think there is a good chance Chauncey isn’t back. Why would he want to play his last couple of seasons with a team that’s not contending, and the nugs certainly don’t want to pay him $14 mill next season.

I agree

I actually think rewarding CB and paying him a full $14 mil for next year might be a good idea. Simply because it would show a lot of loyalty to him and could convince him to finish out his career here at a price that’s great for our long term future.

Thunk about it, would you rather we decline that $14 million, then sign from for 3 more years at $9 million each? I wouldn’t. We should just pay him the $14 million next year. It guarantees that he stays and we won;t be very good next year anyways. But it leaves us a big window to rebuild

by CombatChuk on Dec 8, 2010 2:24 PM MST up reply actions

Except

There is an equally good chance that none of those things happen.

It is all dependent on Melo staying. If he leaves- it’s a bad career decision for CB to stay here – regardless of his loyalty to Denver.

JR is one more bad decision or slump away from being back in the doghouse. The guy has also had a lot of personal problems and could blow up at any minute.

AAA and Nene might be best served to go elsewhere as well. If Denver really had no intention of letting either of them go, they could have extended them – or at least shown that they were interested in extending them. But they really didn’t. The idea is to leave yourself an out, so you can fall back on a total rebuild if that becomes necessary by Melo demanding out

twitter.com/skitalicious
Quitter's People United Member #13

by runningdonut on Dec 8, 2010 2:13 PM MST up reply actions

Besides if Karl is all for re signing

Then the FO must feel that they are not rebuilding and Karl is on board with that.

I think the FO and Karl saw what life would be like without Melo (with AAA and JR being badasses) and thought it won’t be so bad.

Quitter's People United Member #35

by CombatChuk on Dec 8, 2010 2:19 PM MST up reply actions

But it's not up to Karl or the FO

If Melo leaves, then we almost have to rebuild. Otherwise we are stuck as an average team that does not have the potential to compete at a high level in the playoffs. That’s why they want so badly to re-sign Melo now, so they can stay the course and continue building for success with a championship in mind.

If that doesn’t happen, we are likely facing at least 3 years of building ourselves back into contention, depending on what we get in a trade. If Melo finishes this year and leaves for nothing a’ la Cleveland and Toronto, we are set at least 5 years back and will likely be at stuck at rock bottom for a while – nowhere to go

I don't think Karl would re-sign for his last coaching years if we're rebuilding

Quitter's People United Member #35

by CombatChuk on Dec 8, 2010 2:27 PM MST up reply actions

Money talks

I think Karl would coach a bad team here, if he got the security of a good salary and staying in the city he wants to be in – which is Denver. So, while Karl probably wants to win very badly, it’s just not up for him or the FO to decide

No, I go back and fourht

I was a HUGE Melo fan up until he did what he did this past summer. I would ALWAYS defend him in front of my friends who said the same things I’m starting to believe now. But, then I realized what the truth is. Even though at the beginning of the season I was on board the train to maybe keep Melo thorough the year. But it’s obvious now that it’s not the same and we won’t win the title so trading him to me is the best option. You ALWAYS argue in favor or defense of Melo NO MATTER WHAT. I was scrolling through a comment the other day and just startred laughing because no matter what anybody was saying you’d bounce back with some question in defense of Melo. That’s fine, whatever, I just don’t want to get caught up in it, that’s all,

Piling on Melo

Doubt we’re being fickle here to speak the truth about Melo’s game and his deleterious impact on the offense. Sure, we love it when the shots fall, not to mention those stunning cross-court passes that threaten to knock their target right off the court. And how ‘bout all those rebounds? And the way he bulls the man he’s defending away from and on the ball every now and then? (Can you say “Kobe, early in the WCF, 2009?” I know you can.)

Yep, the guy is talented as hell. But he’s far from a consistent, complete player. None of the above happens nearly often enough. I can’t disagree with jmpmk2’s nasty little assessment of Melo as “an offensive plague.” Don’t need to belabor the points here, as it’s all been said very well above by many fine observers of the game who aren’t letting all that powder blue blur their vision.

How can all this be reconciled? Sadly, the Melo years are about to be over, and the results aren’t very pretty. Could a different approach to coaching him have made the difference? Doubt it – see IQ comments above. (And don’t forget that Melo is far from the only star basketball player that fans have wrung their hands over for these very reasons.) Style of team play? Maybe.

But it’s clearly time to move on. The confounding thing is that although the offense will fire on many more cylinders with Melo gone, it’s unlikely that the Nuggets will be as much of a threat to win games. Let’s call it the Melo Paradox.

by LongWindedHank on Dec 8, 2010 11:11 AM MST reply actions

Just two weeks ago

How come none of this came up after the lakers game, or bulls game, or warriors game. It would be fine if all of you expressed this after the great games, but you guys wait til he has a slump to pile on. When he was playing good all I read was Melo cannot be replaced, let me sign this petition, lets ride out the season with Melo, he is playing the best basketball of his career. That’s all I read up here constantly. Now he is in a slump and its like none of that happened.

Some have been commenting on these things since the summer

Others do not want to listen
Again, doesn’t Melo have any part in this??? It can’t always be coaches, fans, team not wanting to build around him, or giving him enough talent….
Do you not remember that Nuggs want to sign him, fans want to keep him, yet it is him who is holding everything back? His attitude towards the nuggs is coming out loud and clear through his play and demeanor.

by Melonugg on Dec 8, 2010 11:41 AM MST up reply actions

Of course he has a part in it.

He hasn’t committed to the nuggets so yes, but like I didnt see any of this after he played good.

All I’m saying its its been three bad games. Game 6 in the playoffs last yr JR was completely disinterested and looked like he could care less about the team, yet he is everyone fav nugget

All I see is a bunch of piling on Melo cause he is in a slump.

by devv83 on Dec 8, 2010 11:50 AM MST up reply actions

A few of us have been saying these things for years

Hope he ends up in NY and you get to see what a real ball stopper is. I truly don’t think there is another guy in the game that stops the flow of an offense the way Meeeelo does.

by Gasus on Dec 8, 2010 4:02 PM MST up reply actions

If he ends up on NY

He’ll be in a real NBA offense for the first time in his career. In the Dantoni system, you’d see his efficiency skyrocket. I don’t want him to go there, but the idea that he wouldn’t dominate in that system is not a good one. Look what happens to average players in that system.

Fickle not a fit for me

You’ll have to take my word for it, since I’ve never commented here before yesterday. I’ve held my current opinion on Melo for many years. And as I was sure to say in my previous blathering, we all love it when his game is on. I can’t see this as fickle, though I understand why someone might. We’re Nuggets fans, right? We live and die by their success.

By the way, our illustrious team didn’t lose last night in the last seven seconds. I wanted a time out, too, but we would all be jumping for joy if Chauncey had pulled up and hit a trey for the win. (Is that fickle? ;) Nah, that game was lost over 48 minutes of lackluster play and hands-off coaching. Execution, execution, execution.

While I’m at it, Harrington is a huge bust, a strange pick-up on Wark’s watch. Sure, he can score in bunches, but in case it’s gone unnoticed, we already have such guys on the team. We need determined, disciplined players with set jaws – guys who can dig down deep in order to win. That ain’t Al Harrington by a long shot.

That was the phoniest 7 game win streak ever, confirmed by last night

It was a product of playing poorly against teams that were just worse, at home in the mile high altitude of Denver.

Good luck is all we have to count on at this point

Please tell me how you can rationalize..

…a 7 game win streak being phony but one loss by the definite example of what the team is?

well, I think he just did

He said the wins were against bad teams that couldn’t play well in the mile high altitude. The loss was against a very beatable opponent, but simply because the Nugs were on the road, they couldn’t get the win.

I agree with RD on this. 10-1 at home, 3-6 on the road. The Bobcats are one of the lowest-ranked offensive teams in the league, but they shot something like 50% against the Nugs.

A 7-game win streak sounds great, until you start to look at things more closely.

by ParkHillNative on Dec 8, 2010 2:33 PM MST up reply actions

Well, would rather have a 7 game losing streak

where we played nearly perfect basketball but still couldn’t win?

Absolutely not

Nuggets are still in great shape. Good luck has given us a pretty awesome record we don;t deserve. But, with no improvement in the fundamental play of this team – the doomsayers are simply pointing out that a 3-4 game losing streak is basically guaranteed to follow.

All I’m saying, is that trying to ride on a high horse about our record right now is foolish. This team is significantly worse than their record suggests, and that is going to be reflected by the number of losses coming up. Unless something drastically changes (no reason to believe it will at this point)

I really don't see we are any worse than we were in 2008 and 2009

Serious question SD

You believe the Melo situation has no effect on the team whatsoever? Like they just completely block all of that out and play like it’s 2 years ago without any care in the world?

You don’t think it affects the leadership on this team even a little bit?

I think things are a lot different this year than in 2008 and 2009. And even if we were just as good as back then, other teams in the Western Conference have improved dramatically

I have to go by what the team is saying publicly

I think it is possible that they can still play together. I’m sure it’s in the back of their minds…but I don’t think it’s tearing the team apart.

Well that's the problem

Everyone knows what’s going on, but they can’t say anything about it. There is a huge distance between everyone on this team and they just try to ignore it like nothing is wrong. It’s like a dysfunctional marriage, where both sides are cheating and deeply hurting each other, yet trying trying to cover it up with lies and denial out of fear that talking about it will only make things worse.

It may not be tearing them apart on the outside. But things could be a lot different if guys were able to say what they really felt

I hear what you are saying..

And it’s always possible that they exactly what’s going to happen and are not allowed to speak of it publicly. They just have to carry on…but I would hope they would be professional enough to set all that aside.

So beating bad teams 7 games in a row means nothing but one loss is the end all?

I wasn’t overly impressed by the win streak either but to read nothing into that and read everything into one game seems misleading. The Nugs also beat the Mavs on the road so we must be the best in the west right?

I would say it's a trend

They’ve been playing the same way for 8 games – mediocre. Mediocre worked at home against bad teams. Mediocre didn’t work on the road against a bad team last night. If Mediocre shows up tonight against the Celtics, they’ll lose by 30.

I didn't say that our one loss last night defined the team

I simply said the 7 game win streak was a product of luck. I think the facts back up my assertion that it was a weak and phony streak

How was it luck? We outplayed everyone of those teams

the Nuggets didn’t play their best but it wasn’t luck.

I believe it was

We barely won those games. Sometimes it was a last second shot by Melo, others it was the other team missing key free throws, and other times it was just favorable calls going the Nuggets way in close games that shouldn’t have been close.

Playing that way isn’t winning basketball. They were losing big lead, giving mediocre effort, but still winning for reasons other than outplaying their opponent. Chief among those reasons were luck, and having the good fortune of playing 5 games in a row at home. With no back to backs

I agree it wasn't their best effort

but I don’t think luck factored into it, it may have been lucky they didn’t lose one of those games along the way but the wins were because the opponent was outplayed, even if not by as much as should have been.

OT: The NBA Union is not budging on the Salary Cap for the new CBA

Could mean less leverage for the Nuggets

Of course they are going to say that

But we are still a long way out. Everything is negotiable, even if they are saying it isn’t.

Last year, the NFL players were saying that if they ever got a year with no cap, they’d never go back to a cap. Well, they got a year with no cap this year and they didn’t like it because there was also no floor and other restrictions. There is a good chance that the cap returns in the NFL next year.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
