Scary Melo Quote

First of all I wrote this as a comment, but I think it's deserving of a fanpost.

Star-divide

Melo also said something kind of scary yesterday after the game.

He was asked if he’d sign in New Jersey and he answered, “I’m signing the extension wherever I’m traded to” (something like that at least. They way I see it is that he would rather be anywhere else but here, he knows he won’t be traded somewhere he does not want to be, or that he will only sign the extension and won’t risk being a FA (which could actually for Denver b/c then we call his bluff and don’t trade him, forcing him to sign the extension in Denver or lose money as a FA).

but pretty scary that now Ujiri and Melo are so up front about it all know. Earlier they would both deny and walk around a true answer, but if they’re being so blunt, it means that a trade is coming soon, which I’d hate to see (I’m in the group, or maybe alone, that thinks we shouldn’t trade Melo and he’ll the extension if he’s still here after the deadline).

Here is the full quote....just to enhance the post
“Wherever I go, I’m going to sign the extension,” he said.

But then he was asked, “If they come to you and say, ‘We have a deal to send you to the Nets,’ would you sign?”

“I don’t know,” Anthony said. "I don’t know. I’d have to deal with that when it comes. . . .

“I try not think about (leaving). As long as I’m here, for however long I’m here, I try to go in there, be professional, play hard and not think about, ‘Oh, I could be gone tomorrow.’ If I start thinking about that, that’s selfish on my behalf and my play would probably be affected.”

It sounds like he’s intending to sign an extension wherever he is…..be that NY or Chicago or LA or Memphis or…etc…
and yes the word “go” seems to indicate a leaving..
I’m still holding out hope that he signs here :)

He ain't goin to Minny

Right now Ujiri is making it clear that Melo and his people hold some, but not all, of the cards. It seems that Melo understands the advantages of signing an extension, and that could mean he’ll be a little more flexible.

As soon as the Nuggs have a few days off, the Nets will make their face-to-face pitch, rolling out a red carpet a mile wide for Melo. He’ll get the dough, the exposure, the Apple, the big market sponsors, the homecoming, the space-age arena, the promise of unlimited spending to reach contender-land, the outrageous benefits, the 72 virgins and he will be crowned Emperor of Brooklyn and presented with a diamond-studded sceptre.

He MIGHT say no as a question of principle…

Just another way of saying

He’s on the same page with Ujiri and he won’t be traded somewhere he doesn’t wanna go. But I honestly believe that is posturing on his part, it doesn’t change the fact Denver CAN trade him as a rental. And the only way he gets the extension is if Denver agrees to send him to somewhere he wants to go by getting a decent deal.

Not scary

it means we should be closer to the inevitable. Lets just get this down and move on with the new Nuggets team we will build around.

It means he wants the money more than anything

unless he knows hes going to either NY or NJ so hes happy with either

he sure is making it clear that signing the extension is the top priority

again, if we can’t get a killer package for him, calling his bluff is looking mighty appealing.

Bad Plan

Attempting to force a guy against his will to sign the contract is a bad plan. You say he is bluffing about not signing the extension with Denver. Well the last thing you want is a guy who feels you have forced him into signing a contract and the contract is huge and guaranteed. He could easily go shawn kemp on you. Or Albert Haynesworth. Or Terrell Owens.

Isn't this good news?

To me this indicates he’s surrendering more levarage over to us. I think if he was smart he’d announce he’s not afraid of testing free agency, that way we’d be forced to trade him to the Knicks.

Agree

I’m not sure if it’s good news or not because he’s dragging this out. When Melo threatened to go to free agency last summer, I strongly believed he could be traded right then. That’s how screwed we’d be if Melo dares us by seriously shunning an extension and taking away the little bit of leverage we have left.

Again, I think this is a play from him trying to keep things all buddy-buddy between him and Ujiri. Just trying to come out and publicly eliminate the possibility of being traded as a rental with no extension (still, this is in our back pocket and it’s possible for us to do it no matter what Melo says)

Only thing I can think of, Melo doesn’t want it out there to other teams that he’s willing to sign after a new CBA. All this does is in my mind is delay the inevitable.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
