Houston to NOT sign Dampier

After they reached an agreement, Houston will apparently not sign Eric Dampier.
Source: http://twitter.com/Jonathan_Feigen#

I don't know about you guys, but Denver should definitely jump on this. I know we've been playing great so far, but it wouldn't hurt to get a true big man to add to our team. But I wouldn't be surprised to see Portland or OKC signed him. What do you guys think about Damp?

Nope

We don’t need him, once Bird and K-mart come back Karl is going to have a hard enough time getting minutes to all the guys who deserve them as is

Why live life on the edge, when you can jump off?

I'm wth hv on this

There’s only one thing to consider and that is if its for the minimum. If it is then I think you have to release Ely and swap out for Dampier. It would suck for Ely because he just had a good game but I expect him to be waived before February anyways. The only reason Ely is playing is because Nene is hurt. I get the feeling GK does not want to play him (he tried Forbes first) but out of necessity he really has to. Dampier is like a taller, better, and more experienced version of Ely with tons of playoff experience. I think it no contest but I also believe something else is behind this story.

Didn;t the Rockets originally plan to give Dampier like a 2 year deal worth $4 million? I’m wondering if they realized they were bidding against themselves and backed off on that. If so it’s going to be the same thing that keeps Denver from signing him too. I’ll take Dampier as a 1 year minimum insurance policy deal but that’s it. When Bird and Kenyon come back there’s too much uncertainty to risk anything more than that. I find it very strange that Dampier has not found work. My guess is he’s had multiple offers to go play for the minimum somewhere and he wants more. Now that Houston has called his bluff I think he should just take the minimum and go play. Assuming this guy wants to compete and contribute to a team this year

depends on if the FO has internally already decided to keep Melo the whole year and go for the big WIN or trade him midseason

If we’re goin big WIN then we might need Damp to fill in for Nene or other bigs if injury strikes

if Melo is to be traded midseason theresn’t a reason to get Damp.

Why would we sign him?

Birdman is coming back in a few weeks. At least, that’s what we’re told.

Chris Andersen could be in a porno with his 'stache. Too bad he still wouldn't know how to box out.

Not a big deal if we get him or not

Ely does what he does and is a little faster on D which is what we need.
Not a big deal either way, but we can’t sign him for more than the min.
If Houston didn’t sign him even though they need a big to play when Yao doesn’t play, why would we want him?

There are plenty of big people in the country, doesn't mean they can play ball

Dampier is a marshmallow, makes Nene look like a tough ass, makes jellow seem sturdy, makes skin tissue look like bones..and you get how I feel about him,

He'll probably go to Portland...

…now that Oberto has retired due to his heart condition.

Wouldn't hurt

Somethings not right if he’s been turned down by so many teams, but you never can have enough bigs, that’s my whole thing.

Perhaps we should bring in Shawn Bradley then

You can have enough bigs when they’re not any good. Dampier is okay, but he’s not going to solve any problems we might have.

Or better yet

Lets get the Hakeem the Dream. He looked good in his workout with Howards and would probably be better than Dampier IMHO

Seriously, he probably is

As for Dampier

It’s not like Damp is going to “solve any problems” we might have. He’s pure insurance. I’d much rather sign him to a min on year deal and have SOMETHING if one of our key guys goes down again rather than nothing. People seem to forget how injury plauged our front court has been over the length of their careers. We almost are NEVER 100% healthy and any minute one of these guys can go down with season ending injures. Why not at least have a 7 footer on hand in case something like that happens? It’s not like we’re losing anything.

I kind of feel this same way

But right now we have a full roster and we would have to cut Ely or Forbes to make room. The problem with this is that our roster is way less flexible and we only can take on one extra player in the event that melo is traded. I dont think the FO would sign him to a guaranteed contract.

you make a good point

I’m not a huge Ely fan myself, but I would like the Nuggets to start infusing a bit more youth in their front court (which totally contradicts my bring back Shawn Bradley comment I know!). I would like to see someone in the front court around to play with Ty and Afflalo (and hopefully Carmelo). I would’ve preferred if they had kept Boateng over Ely and Dampier.

Does anyone know his arm span?

I could only find something that said it was 7’9", which is pretty incredible.

There's a lot of games between now and when Bird/K-Mart come back

I say we should. We can even play Nene at PF for stretches. Plus, who knows how long it’ll take Bird & K-Mart to get back into game shape?

We need to make sure we don’t get too set in our ways though. Damp/K-Mart/Bird should have to fight for playing time when they come back. Who knows? Maybe it’ll push them to be better.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
