Erick Dampier?

I know he isn't that good, but he's got a big body and some experience. I think he could be extremely useful for Denver in the first half of the season (or how ever long Bird and/or Kenyon are out)... Without Kenyon, we could start him with Nene. I know that it was originally between Miami, Houston and Denver... but then Miami never made an offer, Houston pulled their offer/ never made an offer (reports vary), then it looked like he was headed to Milwaukee but then they signed someone else, now he's supposedly talking to Toronto... what gives? is he like asking for a lot of money?

I think Denver should offer him a contract, either the min or BAE... seems win-win for both sides... Denver gets a big to get minutes early on and he gets PT on a contender.

Just saying... also I'm surprised OKC and NO haven't been mentioned.. IMO they'd be ideal places for him.

Signing Dampier

Aren’t we really saying to Melo…“Look we’re half assing it again! Filling a gap with no chance of winning a championship.” Not exactly a great statement when trying to convince someone to stay.

by Pusherman on Oct 1, 2010 1:32 PM MDT reply actions

so you'd rather

Play Shelden Williams than sign Dampier to take his minutes? We could still try and make a trade to convince Melo to stay but as far as signing a free agent its not like there’s anybody better than Dampier. Plus we could use the depth with Kmart and Birds injuries.

Not saying we can't use him

…just saying that it is not a great statement when trying to convince your star that the team is willing to do what it takes. the better thing to have done would have been to sign a good free agent center when they were available, or to have made an aggressive move last year…when they had a good chance at a run and did nothing.

by Pusherman on Oct 1, 2010 1:58 PM MDT up reply actions

Be specific

Which better free agent center could they have signed for the money they had to offer? Please remember also that whoever this player is would prevent the Harrington signing. So this other player has to be better by himself than a Harrington/Dampier combination.

I say sign him if he will sign here for the BAE. He’s a servicable big that adds depth, the nuggets biggest issue. He may refuse to sign due to the uncertainty around melo, but it looks like he’ll take the first contract anyone offers him. The lack of offers may indicate an unreported injury issue.

Absolutely sign him

Dampier would replace one of the following in the rotation: Williams, Ely, Balkman. On at most a 2 year deal worth peanuts. Absolutely sign him if he’s willing.

Melo doesn’t factor in this move at all. We need the player, with or without Melo, I don’t see the issue.

Signing Dampier

wouldn’t be a move to try and convince Melo to stay, it would be a move to add depth where it is needed. Like i said if were going to do something significant to try and convince Melo it would have to be through a trade anyways, so why not add a little depth to help fill a hole.

by Chadwork on Oct 1, 2010 4:03 PM MDT up reply actions

yeah, I don't agree with

not doing something just because we’re afraid of the statement it makes to Melo. we still have to keep the best interests of the team in mind.

Yes, Dampier would be a temp. I have mixed feelings about him. One time a legit D presence, he’s still big, but he is NOT agile. Still, I feel a little better about Damp/Nene than either Shelden/Nene or Nene/Balkman.

by deezNuggets on Oct 1, 2010 5:52 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm not totally against it

We could use the extra big, but make no mistake: as far as helping us contend or enticing Melo to stay, Dampier is fool’s gold all the way. He’s never made any of the teams he’s played for appreciably better, and I doubt seriously that would change in Denver. The fact that so many teams have already passed doesn’t inspire much confidence either – he either wants way too much money (likely) or is more banged up than usual (also likely).

If we can get him on the cheap, go for it, but don’t think for a second it solves the Nuggets’ big man woes – Damp is a band-aid for a bullet hole.

one thing I haven't heard

is anybody jumping up and saying “Hell yeah! Damp is the f#$king man!”

maybe once he sends his first layup into the seats as a Nugget… hopefully it’s on D.

Why not

If he takes a one or two year deal with the BAE which i think is a 2 year deal anyways. Couldn’t hurt.

Agreed

He’s “best available” big man, wouldn’t hurt to sign him

by jjbugs on Oct 1, 2010 4:27 PM MDT reply actions

Get him for the Min or BAE

To the people saying Melo wouldn’t care about a Dampier signing, think again. Wouldnt Melo be much happier if denver signed Dampier instead of Melvin Ely?

by Monkfish on Oct 1, 2010 4:54 PM MDT reply actions

yea basically we have nobody healthy at the start of the season

so might as well sign him. obviously this wouldn’t influence melo’s decision, but it could prevent us from tanking to start out the season

by skithebert on Oct 1, 2010 5:06 PM MDT reply actions

In a way it could affect his decision

b/c Dampier could actually help us a lot during the games without Kenyon/Bird… so instead of relying on Williams and Balkman, we could at least use the size… keep in mind Williams is only 6’9" and Balkman is a skinny 6’8"

Dampier is hefty 7 feet

by hvino on Oct 2, 2010 8:46 AM MDT up reply actions

he's a legit 7-footer

even if he has no offensive capabilities whatsoever, this team doesn’t exactly need that right now. it needs a big man who can clog the middle, defend (pretty well i might add) against opposing big men and grab rebounds. even if he’s signed to the BAE, it’s not like his contract is going to hamper us in any way. it’ll allow nene to slide over to the 4 to boot (although i’m not sure how much of a difference it’ll make)

and as someone mentioned earlier, it’s either him or melvin ely. or shelden williams. or courtney sims.

by YaSrsly on Oct 1, 2010 7:10 PM MDT reply actions

Who gives a shit what Melo thinks

We need to sign a big for the good of the team.

I wouldn't mind having him either

He could get minutes here, and he’s still good enough to be worth the min or a BAE. For some reason I just don’t see the Nugs making another move before the season starts

I could see Denver making a trade at like Nov or Dec (like when they got AI, then CB)...

but then again, that was the old regimen, no one can predict Masai and Josh

but I’ll try to guess, lol…

Masai seems like an extremely patient guy who would make sure he gets the best deal
Josh seems like he wants to win now and not worry about the future

They could either compliment each other perfectly or argue over every trade and ruin the franchise… only time will tell

by hvino on Oct 2, 2010 3:19 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm sure he'd be helpful

But what do you do with him when Bird and Martin (assuming he comes back) return to the lineup?

Chris Andersen could be in a porno with his 'stache. Too bad he still wouldn't know how to box out.

Um, expand to a four man rotation

Isnt that what we all want anyway? Al helps, but he will be spending some of his time at SF, so I dont know.

STIFF LIST (as of 4/26 by Andrew Feinstein)

1. METTA WORLD PEACE

Metta resorted back to Ron Ron last Sunday by clubbing James Hardenwith an "inadvertent celebratory elbow", landing him a 7-game suspension. Apparently, changing his name didn't prevent NBA commissioner David Stern from overlooking Metta's past behavior problems.

2. CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

The 'Cats are on the verge of securing the worst winning percentage in NBA history. Given that the guy who runs the team - Michael Jordan - had previously drafted Kwame Brown and Adam Morrison, should this really be a shock?

3. OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER
The team that was supposedly built to overcome the lockout-shortened season managed to lose 7 of its last 14 games, ceding the Western Conference's 1-seed to the Spurs in the process. Their reward might be a first round matchup with defending champion Dallas.

4. BILLY HUNTER AND DEREK FISHER
With report after report coming out about NBPA union head Hunter's shady, nepotistic dealings and questions arising about Fisher's own role in dealing with NBA owners behind Hunter's back during the lockout, this off-the-court scandal could prove to be more exciting than the playoffs themselves!

5. STEVE NASH AND THE PHOENIX SUNS
The Suns are on this list for squandering the last few great seasons from Nash. Nash is on this list for his stupidly stubborn loyalty to a franchise as awful as the Suns.
